Welcome to the October issue of Local Living Well it’s October and my favourite season. Autumn is officially here! Although the weather is still mild I’ve thought about digging the slippers and sofa blankets. Nearly time for collecting conkers and blackberries! On
Page 8 we have our guide to gardening in October courtesy of Malcolm Greenhalgh. If you have a hankering for something healthy bob into Prepped2go over in Golborne. They reopen mid October under new management. The new owners are three brothers, Luke, Tobias and Joshua, all live in Golborne. Two of them play professional Rugby so know all about healthy eating! Take a look at their menu over on P.11. We were lucky enough to chat with local lady Cathryn and Scary who have written a fabulous article for us on P.13. This issue is jam packed with lots of fantastic businesses and things to do including a few ideas for Bonfire’s and Firework displays on P.12.
We are hurtling towards Christmas and our November and December issues. If you have any news, events or would like to get your business out to 10,000 homes and businesses contact us now!
GOLBORNE IS NOW IN BLOOM WITH THE HELP OF LOCALS Local Living chatted with Claire Baker who told us all about Golborne in Bloom. Claire explained that over 2,500 man hours have been spent improving lots of areas around Golborne since February 2016. The group have attracted several children to help over the summer hols & regularly have a group of ten keen workers who really graft– Claire told us, quite rightly, that she is proud of each & everyone! She went on to tell us in more details where the improvements have been made ‘We always have a bit of fun as well as focusing on the work in hand. We ignore the mucky jobs & aim to make Golborne brighter & more positive. We have worked so far on Golborne Library Gardens - many hours have been spent on power hosing the block paving & maintaining hanging baskets & tubs of flowers. We have transformed Tanners Lane Bankside - we spent 4 months removing ten years of rubbish / old trees / over- growth & have planted insect loving plants and bulbs for the springtime. We worked in all weathers ! Next we have continued with renovating The Peter Kane Square Gardens - £500 worth of bulbs and many new perennials kindly donated by members of our group / small grant from WMBC 'The Deal' , have been planted. Our latest project is The Charles Napier Garden (opposite The Napier Pub) - we have removed loads of rubbish and are in the process of planting colourful shrubs here. We will continue working over the autumn period & we will be organising our annual Broadmead Day Care Centre (near Stonecross Junction) garden clean up in late November.”
New volunteers are always welcomed! Claire told us “We meet to work hard but also have fun & make a difference to our town !” Thank you Claire and her fantastic helpers it’s making a real difference to the area.

October in your Garden...
October is one of my favourite months. The autumn leaves
are at their best, with glowing yellows, reds and browns. The variety and numbers of garden birds also increases. In my Lowton garden, jays come to gather acorns from the two oak trees and carry them away, burying them as a hoard for winter but forgetting exactly where! And, provided I keep my bird feeders topped up, there will be charms of goldfinches, parties of greenfinches and chaffinches, and blue, great, coal and long-tailed tits. Incidentally, we often think that the two blue tits we see on our feeders are the regular two, but when I was a young bird ringer I caught over 60 separate blue tits in our small family garden over Christmas! Of all garden birds, only one sings in winter, the robin; its song is thinner than in spring, and is often uttered before dawn breaks from street lights. So: Think of your garden birds and have a bird table and some feeders hanging up where you and your family can watch without disturbing them. Besides our own food waste (bread crusts, stale cake and cheese etc.) get sunflower hearts, a good mixed bird seed and some fat balls for your feeders. Note that whole peanuts in feeders often go mouldy before they are eaten. Also, if squirrels are a problem you can buy feeder stands with long, narrow, smooth metal poles up which the little pests cannot climb and wire squirrel excluders for your bird table. Get your last spring-flowering bulbs in now. In pots use special bulb fibre and keep them somewhere cool and dark (such as the back of a shed). When planting in the ground fork in some humus (compost heap, rotted manure or the green bin waste that has been processed and is sold in bags) and plant the bulbs deep (twice the height of the bulb). This is your last chance to have a lovely spring display: plant wallflowers and sweet williams now. If the weather remains warm, grass will continue to grow, so give the lawn a mowing when it is dry. I sow the lettuce that we will eat around Christmas and New Year at the beginning of October. We need specially produced winter varieties and this year I am growing Valdor and Winter Density. Sow a pinch of seed in pots, water and label. Then, when the seedlings are just making their first true leaves (the seed leaves grown at germination are oval in shape) prick them out (hold by the leaves and not stem) into a trough or box of compost 4” apart and put them in a place that gets the best of the winter sun. As the plants grow, remove and enjoy every other seedling and by Christmas you will have lovely home-grown salad to go with your cold turkey, goose or chicken. Many of us have allotments or vegetable patches in the garden. We might have Brussels sprout, cabbage and kale plants to provide us with greens in winter. The autumn rains may well wash away most nutrients in the soil, and especially nitrogen. So give them a feed of a liquid fertiliser: liquid Growmore is ideal. The key to great plants in a great garden is soil quality, and top quality comes mainly from adding lots of humus (broken LOWTON ST MARY’S VILLAGE SHOW down dead plant matter) to the soil. Leaf mould is a great WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! material and around Lowton and Golborne there will be an The village show At Lowton St Mary’s Community Hall had lots abundance of fallen leaves. Collect them in black bin-bags. of wonderful things brought in by both young and old. The We should NEVER throw away (or put in the green bin) any trophies were presented by Mr plant waste because that can be broken down to make Pollard ,head master of Lowton high humus: vegetable peelings, cooked mashed potatoes or school. Then the day was finished of what’s left of the cabbage, tea bags and coffee grounds, with a pie and pea supper and apple cores, weeds, lawn mowing, bedding plants that we auction. The auctioneer was the have cleared from the border, straw bedding from the organisers (June Brignall) daughter children’s rabbit hutch. Pile that in a large compost bin, Gail Coenen and she made a great mixed together with leaves from your black bags. Keep the job of it. It was great fun for all. All bin topped up until Christmas and in spring you can use it in money raised is going into a fund for the repair of Lowton st Mary’s stained the garden. Note: Compost bins do not attract rats; rats are glass window above the alter. The with us even if we have no compost bins! amount raised was £1,100. June said “I would like to thank every one for there help and all the people that came to support us. Thanks everyone” This is Sue Watson picking up a trophy from Mr pollard on behalf of her grand children that had to go early
