Tracy x Congratulations on your 100th Birthday Lily!

Lily Foy (nee Heaton), amongst a lot of others, celebrated her birthday under Covid restrictions. Unfortunately due to this the family didn’t have the celebrations everyone had planned. Lily was born in Golborne the youngest of nine brothers and sisters. She started work at the local factory aged 14. During the war Lily worked night shifts at the munitions factory. Lily met her partner Jack and they got married in 1946. They went on to have a daughter Dianne. Lily and Dianne owned Dianne’s boutique on Heath Street for many years. As a former pupil of St Thomas’ Lily would like to send a special thank you to all the children who sent her some beautiful birthday cards. A very Happy 100th Birthday Lily from all your family and friends far and wide.

The Garden in November November is perhaps the quietest month in the garden, but it is the month when you can look at flower and shrub beds and carry out any major revamp. Where different varieties of plants are growing into each other and others that have grown too big. The perennials can be removed, split and some replanted or given away. You can wait until March with things like buddleia (the time to prune these). You can cut out many stems to reduce its size. This is also as good a time as there is to plant new fruit trees and bushes. If you have a small patch of ground, say eight feet by three feet that is not heavy shade, plant some autumn-fruiting raspberries. Keep fruiting canes in your patch (they will try to move out), cut down the canes that have fruited this autumn in early spring, and remove any weekly new canes as they grow so that the strongest will bear fruit next autumn. Feed in spring and summer with fish, blood and bone fertilizer. Blackbirds ignore the autumn raspberries, but love to eat the summer ones. A blite on your vegetable patch is the leek moth. This insect is a recent arrival in the UK and has spread north in a very few years. The tiny moth lays its eggs at night on the young leeks and its caterpillars burrow into the thick body of the leek. It looks as though there are one or two tiny holes, but inside the damage caused by the tiny caterpillar results in the leek rotting. You could spray every fortnight or so, which is what arable farmers do, but it is far better to keep the moths off using horticultural fleece to keep carrots free of that pest the carrot root fly. Slugs and snails! For years organic gardeners have tried to use barriers to keep these molluscs off their tender plants: a layer of grit, sheep’s wool, copper bands and so on. However a study by the Royal Horticultural Society has shown that none of these really works. Ferric phosphate pellets are ideal. Or, put out traps: jam jars of beer sunk in the ground, halves of citrus fruit after you have eaten or used the inside. Or go out at night with a torch. Check the hyacinths that will flower at Christmas, which you are keeping in the dark. Check shops and garden centres, for they may be selling off tulips bulbs and November is a great time to plant them!

Toby’s Little Hearts are spreading smiles Toby has been spreading some much needed joy throughout lockdown and beyond. Toby and his Mum Laura have been making little hearts with a note for people to find while they are out and about. Laura, Toby’s mum says “We started doing them when we were in lockdown earlier in the year. Every day when we went for a walk, we took some with us to hide. I set up a Facebook group so that people could post when they found them and lots of people did. They added photos of the hearts with their pets and children!” He has become a little local celebrity by all accounts. Laura said he has started being recognised while they are out. She also said “We all really enjoyed reading when people had found them!”. Laura soon realised how lovely people thought it was so they decided it would be fun to hide some little pumpkins too. What a fabulous idea! If you find one of Toby’s hearts or pumpkins don’t forget to share on their Facebook group /Toby’s Little Hearts

Historic business unveils centenary video to mark 100 years in Leigh Past and present employees of family run Leigh business, George Moss & Sons Ltd, have come together to record a very special centenary video to celebrate the achievements of the business over the last 100 years. The business, which has played a big part in the Leigh community over the years, was founded by George Moss back in September 1920. It was originally a joinery business but later evolved into a house builder and construction business and now owns Moss Industrial Estate on St. Helen’s Road. Over the last 100 years, George Moss & Sons Ltd built many important local building such as Leigh Library, Bedford High School, Leigh Market, St. Helen’s Law Courts, Tyldesley Swimming Baths as well as banks, churches, bowling alleys and cinemas. The centenary video was filmed over the summer when it became clear that the business wouldn’t be able to hold any of the events it had planned to celebrate the occasion but, according the current owner and fifth generation of the Moss family, Sebastian Moss, it’s been a very special way to mark the occasion. Sebastian said: “George Moss & Sons has had a big impact on the local community for 100 years and local people have so many wonderful stories to tell about the business and the projects they individually were involved in and so we wanted to involve them in this special project. “It has been a fantastic experience to hear from those people who helped to shape the business and played an important part in its history.” The centenary video features builders, joiners and surveyors who worked for George Moss & Sons throughout its history as well as current staff. Among people to feature in the video are ninety-two-year-old Jack Hunt, from Glazebury. Jack was a surveyor for George Moss & Sons just after WW2 when he was just starting out in his career. He worked on several local bridges, such as Leigh Bridge and Hindley Green Bridge, and buildings such as St. Luke’s Church in Lowton. Jack said: “George Moss & Sons has a history of excellent builders. I wish them well and I think they will do well because it’s in the blood.” The video also features Tony Jennings (73), from Leigh, who was a bricklayer for George Moss & Sons in the 1960s. He started as an apprentice at 15 years old and worked on the Market Hall in Leigh. David Eastwood (66), an apprentice carpenter and joiner in the early 1970s, says he wouldn’t be where he is today without George Moss & Sons. David helped to make all the fixtures and fittings for Leigh Library, the old Odeon cinema (now Wetherspoons), the former TSB Bank and several local pubs. He said: “George Moss & Sons built quite a lot of big projects like Leigh Library as well as banks, churches and cinemas. I’d like to thank them for all the chances I got.” Local residents, Malcolm and Barbara Ryding, were also interviewed for the video. They lived in a house built by George Moss & Sons Ltd in the 1980s where they spent 17 very happy years raising their family. Malcolm said: “I first knew George Moss because they were a principal Leigh company. They have been part of the lifeblood of Leigh and District for 100 years. As a Leigh brand and a Leigh company and a Leigh name and a Leigh family, that meant a lot to local people.” Earlier this year, to kick off George Moss & Sons’ centenary year, school children from Lowton Junior and Infant School buried two special time capsules at Moss Industrial Estate along with the Mayor of Wigan. The time capsules contained the children’s letters, drawings, photos and other important local items they collected for future generations to discover. Sebastian Moss, managing director at George Moss & Sons Ltd, said: “To mark our centenary, we wanted to involve the local community as well as past and present employees so I am delighted that we have managed to achieve that during what has been a very challenging year for everyone. “We are very proud to be a Leigh business and we hope that our community enjoy this short video and will join us in celebrating this very special milestone and all the wonderful buildings and local industry that we have in Leigh.” View the video on Local Living’s website www.locallivingonline.com/historic-businessunveils-centenary-video-to-mark-100-years-in-leigh/

‘I want to race a Ministox Dad’… The words Simon didn’t really want to hear. After being involved in building race cars from being 16 Simon wasn’t bothered about our son Sam, racing due to the huge commitment and it taking over your life. In August 2016 though Sam was out racing a Micro F2 at the age of 9. This was a starter formula to gain experience and see if Sam enjoyed it. He loved it so at the age of 10 we decided to sell the car and spend the next 12 months saving up and preparing for Brisca Ministox, the ultimate oval racing formula for children age 11 – 16 in the UK. In September 2018 Sam turned 11 with his first meeting at Birmingham Wheels Raceway. There’s a huge difference between the Micro F2’s where around 15 cars race with a go kart engine at 30mph with no contact, to the Ministox, with a geared 1000cc engine, and upto 35 cars racing at 60mph+ and full contact. Nervous was an understatement. Sam went out there and gave it his all and loved every minute. With the season running March to November Sam only had 11 meetings during 2018, so these were all about learning, as was the start of the 2019 season. Sam was doing well narrowly missing out on a couple of championships when we went to Skegness for a weekend meeting. We weren’t expecting Sam to make it into the monthly magazine however due to a freak accident we spent the next week receiving numerous messages and pictures from the track photographers. The incident knocked Sam’s confidence and we spent the rest of the season getting back to where we were. The end of season came and we again raced at Skegness during the October half term, where the East Coast Championship was up for grabs. Sam was in good spirits and after some great driving went out and won all four races – a clean sweep, maximum points and bagging the East Coast Championship, a great end to the season. During 2020 we’ve only had 20 meetings due to COVID-19 however Sam built up some confidence on virtual racing games during lockdown and went out a different driver when our season finally started. The drivers are graded in 5 grades – white, yellow, blue, red and superstar with only 12 spots available for reds/superstars (the top grades) out of the 55+ registered drivers. Sam’s driving earnt him a number of race wins and podium positions and within the first 10 meetings he scored enough points to move to red top, something that was only a dream last year. To be in the top 12 drivers in his sport in the country is something we are immensely proud of. It’s a tough sport, most kids sports are, and it’s a lot of commitment with us travelling most weekends to tracks including Cowdenbeath in Scotland, Skegness, Bristol, the Isle of Man, Venray in Holland to name just a few. We couldn’t do it without the support of family and friends and are beyond grateful. We always welcome new sponsors and would be grateful anyone wanting to help out our little race team in whatever small way they can. #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #dreambig. siancritchley@googlemail.com
