Epiphany Trust is one of only a few international charities based in

the north west, grew out of the Romanian orphanage crisis of 1989/90. Over the past 30 years hundreds of young and young at heart volunteers from the Lowton/Golborne area have taken part in international exchanges, Summer camps, support work in half- way houses and street children centres & fund raising through community events. This year’s annual Carol Service is on 18th December at Lowton IM Church, Newton Road at 7pm. With a small personnel, but an army of volunteers, its Patrons include Jo Platt MP and Andy Burnham. Whilst it remains a relatively small charity, it has been said that it “punches above its weight.” Over the past 20 years, Epiphany Trust has supported those who are often marginalised or forgotten - providing aid, healthcare, education and residential care. By working with local partners, the Trust can ensure long-term impact and selfsufficiency. It works across 3 continents; in Sri Lanka, Burma, India and Zimbabwe a well as Romania, supporting projects to remove the inequality of disadvantage and disability. Aid has taken the form of containers of vital goods sent to Romania, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh including school resources, a dental surgery, beds from Wigan and Leigh Hospice and 2 fire engines courtesy of Liverpool City Council. It has responded to tragedies such as the SE Asia tsunami, the Bangladesh factory disaster and the more recent Sri Lankan bombings. Ongoing support has centred around education, health care and wellbeing, by providing opportunities for children and their families to break out of the poverty cycle they were born into. The latest projects include a school in the slums of Delhi and a Centre for child headed families in Zimbabwe. The charity is committed to water aid and has provided 40 wells in some of the poorest and most remote areas of Bangladesh and bore holes in rural Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Many projects are supported by local schools, churches, Rotary/ Inner Wheel groups and businesses. Epiphany Trust has an enterprise Company called ‘Chrysalis Holidays’ which provides over 600 supported holiday places a year for adults with learning disabilities. Last year holidays were experienced in places as far flung as Lapland, New York, Disneyland Paris as well as to the old favourite, Blackpool. Chrysalis has its own holiday centre in Scarborough. It is the only holiday company of its kind to be registered with Care Quality Commission, providing high standards of care. Step into 2020 feeling amazing! Healthy eating and feeling good about yourself CAN be for life and not just for Christmas . There is still time to drop a dress size before Santa arrives and, even better, imagine stepping into 2020 as a new you. Why wait ? Losing just 1lb a week from now until Christmas will see you 10lb lighter. Joining one of our warm and friendly groups you will get help and support each week to help you succeed . We get asked all the time…. what kinds of things do you eat ? Well! Things like burger and chips, curry, spaghetti Bolognese, cottage pie, roast dinners, salads, oh and pizza . Do they sound like the kinds of things you like to eat? Claire, who runs the Travelodge on Tuesdays, has lost over 4 stone herself and has a 4 year old little girl.” Our favourite family meal is roast dinner, yes we have roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings” Julie who runs Wednesday at Golborne , says life over 50 is much more fun and active since losing her 3 stone. “ I love pasta, especially a home cooked lasagne or tagliatelle , it keeps me nice and full. Vicki also loves running and is a busy mum. She’s looking forward to her 10th Christmas at target!

We are lucky enough to have a family of hedgehogs visiting our garden most days from late spring to early to mid autumn. We don’t know where they hibernate, but it will be in a mass of fallen leaves and tree twigs and branches. So if you or neighbours living within a couple of hundred yards are having a bonfire, get it rebuilt just in case there are hedgehogs curled up in the bottom. If you do find curled up hedgehogs, fill a plastic or wooden box with dry leaves, put it on its side somewhere sheltered and pop them in it. There are certain jobs that are best carried out in November: It is, I think, the best month for planting bare-root trees and bushes, and if you want a fruit bush or tree, look to R.V. Roger of Pickering, for they have a vast range with advice on which to choose. Whatever, if you want an apple, plum or pear tree to plant in a garden, go for ‘bush’ on a dwarfing stock (M106 for apples, Quince A for pears, St Julian A for plums, gages and damsons).. Soak the bare roots in a bucket of water while you dig the planting hole, and just before planting dust the bottom of the hole and the wetted bare roots well with ‘Rootgrow’. This contains mycorrhiza, fungi that have a symbiotic relationship with tree and bush roots. They get sugars from the plant but help the roots take up mineral salts (fertilisers) from the soil. They greatly speed up root growth. Some plants can get very top heavy in the garden and are easily damaged by severe winter weather. Nothing should be ‘pruned’ now, but things like tall bush roses, very tall, exposed buddleias, and the tall varieties of hydrangeas (e.g. H. paniculata) might benefit from a quick trim. Just remove the heaviest top part of the bushes with hedge clippers. Check any bulbs you have still in the dark. Is the bulb fibre still damp? And it is not too late to plant tulips outside or in containers. This is the month to get hold of seed catalogues and order next season’s flower and vegetable seeds. Don’t throw away the seeds you have left from this year. Keep them in a dark cool – but not freezing – place (mine go in a box under the stairs), for I have known lettuce seeds to germinate and produce good lettuces two years after their ‘Use by’ date. What is all this F1 business? Just means expensive seeds!F1 seeds are more expensive than ordinary seeds because they are produced by technicians hand-pollinating plants of one strain of, say, tomato, that has had the anthers in its own flowers removed so that it cannot pollinate itself, with the pollen taken from the anthers of another strain. The resulting F1 cross gives plants that have the best traits from both strains plus something extra, known as ‘hybrid vigour’. So if you compare, say, the quantity and flavour and texture of an F1 Shirley tomato with an ordinary tomato like Moneymaker, the difference can be considerable. Malcolm Greenhalgh Newton-le-Willows Gardeners’ Association’s Advice & Sales Hut is closed until 4 Jan 2020.

Several of our members were awarded a certificate for their 10 year membership. However the star of the evening was Jessie Harrison who, as well as a certificate, was presented with a bouquet of flowers to commemorate 55 years membership in Lowton WI. Congratulations to you all. Our charity coffee morning on 5th October in aid of Leigh Women’s Refuge was very successful and raised a grand total of £883.39. Thank you to everyone who came along to support this worthy cause. Our next meeting will be the first Thursday in November at 7:15pm at Lowton Social Club on Newton Road, Lowton. The speaker on that night will be a lady called Sue Holden. The title of her talk is ‘They should have asked my husband’. For anyone thinking of joining the WI and would like to arrange a visit please phone Lin Hayes on 01942 207765 Thirty years ago, Joan decided to start up a Keep Fit class as there was nothing like that on offer in Golborne. 30 years later, there are still no classes like it around which shows why it’s still as popular today as it was back in 1989. This is not just a Keep Fit class; it’s an opportunity once a week for friends to meet up and have a chat, a catch up and get a bit healthier in the process. We’ve seen hundreds of members come and go over the years but one thing remains true, the friendships made in this class will last a life time. Here’s to another 30 years... especially with trainee teacher Amelia desperate to take over Nanna’s reins!

Neighbourhood Forum gets green light! The Voice for Golborne & Lowton West Voice gains approval from Wigan Council

This is the first step towards development of the Neighbourhood Plan for the Ward of Golborne and Lowton West. Who are we? The Voice for Golborne & Lowton West is a group of local people who are working together to ensure that our villages are recognised as great places in which to live and work. Pride in the places where you live and work is an important part of building community relations. Having a voice to shape the future is the role of the Neighbourhood Forum. We believe the house building across Golborne and Lowton, with its lack of facilities, infrastructure and inherent traffic issues will create great challenges but through one voice the residents can respond and achieve change. The Voice for Golborne and Lowton West applied to Wigan Council for designation as a Neighbourhood Forum [ the statutory body which will give us the power to create a Neighbourhood Plan for the whole area]. The consultation period for this has now ended the final approval from Wigan Council Cabinet has been granted. We want to be a positive voice for Golborne and Lowton West and help to bring the community closer together. This can be achieved in many different ways through local activities, events and campaigns. Together we can make our villages places to be proud of and for future generations to enjoy and want to remain here. Our Vision By 2030 we want our villages to be thriving communities again with attractive centres where housing meets local needs and residents have easy affordable access to excellent leisure, sports and cultural facilities. Our aim is to protect the few remaining green spaces in our area with high quality, ecologically sound open spaces, especially the protection of Byrom Wood and improvements to existing parks, open spaces and footpaths. We want to see a reduction in traffic congestion by the creation of better public transport links and working with the Council and TfGM, we hope to create cycleways and footpaths which are safe and away from traffic enabling residents to access the centre, places of work and schools either on foot or by bicycle. A major priority is to work with everyone who is interested, in reopening Golborne railway station. What have we done so far? We have consulted with the community to find out their wishes to help improve our area and address their concerns. We also carried out a survey which gave us a far better insight into peoples’ opinions of where and how we live and work. Examples of our activities include:

•Organising an Easter Egg Hunt with the help of Mark Collier, Bloomin’ Nursery [a local company]. •“Let’s get together” an event to help tackle loneliness was organised by Mark Collier and his team. Working with the Council we completed our Designated Area proposal and the Neighbourhood Forum application. The approval by Wigan Council means we can now move forward to the creation of our Neighbourhood Plan. Following the reintroduction of the Christmas Market last year, plans are now in hand to make it bigger and better with the support of The Voice. The Local Councillors are helping make sure our Christmas lights show is an improvement on previous years with more lights and better placement.

•Golborne Carnival is being revived, a wonderful event which sadly faded into memory is being planned for June 2020 and work has already begun on its organisation. •Creating a walking club is The Voice’s latest venture. The first two walks have

been very well attended and the next one is now advertised and looks to be set for an increased number of participants. The aim is to explore how some of the most neglected and unknown areas of our Ward can be restored, such as Byrom Wood. Despite being on the doorstep it is something of a secret. Pathways are badly in need of clearance and working with council officers, this is a target areas for improvement.

•In conjunction with the Council we are working on funding new cycleways from the Bee Network.

A busy few months, with lots more to come = please join us! •Watch our Facebook page for information - the website is on its way •The next public meeting is 31st October •Join The Voice for Golborne and Lowton West – application forms via Facebook •Get involved in one of the Working Groups •Support Golborne in Bloom

My name is Gladys and it’s was my 100th Birthday on the 19th October! Originally born in South East Hackney in London I moved to Golborne in the 1940’s, where I married and raised a family with my late husband Ebb Fletcher. Orphaned at 13 I went to live with my Grandmother for many years before moving to Essex where I met a young man and got engaged. Sadly he was killed on the railways so I decided to help with the war effort and moved to Preston, Lancashire were I worked in the munitions factory. There I met some lovely ladies and life long friends who gave me lodgings in May Street, Golborne and set me up on a blind date with the man who would become my husband. Ebb gave me a charmed, wonderful and happy life with no complaints from me. My name is Ann and this is my mum. I couldn’t let this accomplishment go by without saying congratulations from all your family with all our love and best wishes. To all the Carers at Bedford Care Home who look after her so well, Thank You
