Aman’s of Lowton is now in it’s 11th year. We asked Sam, the owner how it all began… Where did the name come from? I had just got the building a month after my first born, Aman, arrived and I wanted to call it something unique and different. That’s where the name comes from. It has got so many nice meanings in many different parts of the world.
How many restaurants do you have now and where are they? When I started 11 years ago I never thought in 10 years we would grow to have 6 restaurant throughout Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Our sites are in Bramhall, Congleton, Newton-le-willows, Worsley and, now our latest one, Stockton Heath.
A good restaurant has good staff, does that apply to Amans? We’ve had the same team since we started 11 years ago. If we’re ever asked the question where it all started we always say Lowton.
Amans is an exceptional dining experience where we pride ourselves on the quality of our food and service Inspired by India's grand culinary traditions, our menu will take you on a journey around the regions of the sub-continent. We offer authentic classic and contemporary cuisine to suit all tastes, from subtle aromas and delicately spiced speciality dishes through to our heady richly flavoured dishes. We use carefully selected ingredients and our own unique blending of spices, all freshly prepared on the premises by our chefs.

How Does A Black Country Girl End Up Becoming A Lowton Beekeeper? How does someone born and bred in the Black Country end up becoming a Beekeeper in Lowton? Well it started when I left Tipton to marry Mark, my now husband. He was born and lived on Slag Lane until he left at the age of 18 to join the Army. We married in 1992 in Tipton but lived in Berlin as our first posting. Soon after we were posted to Scotland and remained in the Army for a further five years. After leaving the forces in 1998 we decided to start up a gardening/ landscaping business, just about the same time our daughter was born. The business prospered for 20 years and during this time we really started to take an interest in nature and conservation. It allowed us to help local wildlife to come and thrive in some of the gardens and grounds we looked after, we could plant wild flower areas, dig ponds and plant indigenous trees. In our own garden we did the same and also encouraged lots of wild birds to come to feed and nest. With all that was going on in the garden, I took an interest in the bees that visited and consequently completed a basic Beekeeping Course in 2014. I was keen to keep my own bees but when our daughter decided to leave home to join the RAF we thought it was maybe time to move south and live closer to family. Having visited Mark's family many times over the years, I was no stranger to Lowton and this seemed as good a place as any to settle. So in 2016 we brought a bungalow near the bottom of Slag Lane, overlooking the fields at the back. This just might be the perfect place for me to achieve my ambition to look after my own hive. We completed the renovation on the bungalow in 2017, totally changing inside and out. The garden now had a wildlife pond, natural field ditch and wild flower areas, we also put up plenty of nesting boxes for the birds. We have bird feeders that are in constant need of filling and feeding posts that are used by Woodpeckers, Blue Tits and Great Tits etc. Now with the garden well established and visited by all sorts of wild life, I thought the time was right for me to introduce some Honey Bees. So in June 2018, it was a dream come true to finally get myself a colony of Honey Bees and become a Lowton Beekeeper. Since then we have seen our garden grow as well as the visiting wildlife. So at the start of the year 2018, I finally started to believe that keeping bees would become a reality. By June I had my first hive making my dream come true. Joanne Henders If you would like to find out more information or are interested in a beekeeper please message Joanne thorough her facebook page /beeluckyhoney/lowtonhoney
November is perhaps the quietest month in the garden, but it is the month when I look at flower and shrub beds and carry out any major revamp. I have one corner that needs reorganizing, where different varieties of Michaelmas daisy are growing into each other and where I planted a buddleia that has grown too big. The perennials will be removed, split and some pieces replanted and the rest given away. I will wait until March with the buddleia (the time to prune these) and may simply cut out many stems to reduce its size. This is also as good a time as there is to plant new fruit trees and bushes. If you have a small patch of ground, say eight feet by three feet that is not heavy shade, let me urge you to plant some autumnfruiting raspberries. This morning, 5 October, Yvonne (she who must be obeyed) and I shared one pound of raspberries at breakfast from such a patch where, five years ago, I planted just six canes, and we had our first picking in early September. This year we have had almost ten pounds, and there is more to come. Keep the fruiting canes to your patch (they will try to move out), cut down the canes that have fruited this autumn in early spring, and remove any weekly new canes as they grow so that the strongest will bear fruit next autumn. Feed in spring and summer with fish, blood and bone fertilizer. Blackbirds ignore the autumn raspberries, but love to eat the summer ones. Looking back, this year my vegetable patch was host to a new pest, the leek moth
12
This insect is a recent arrival in the UK and has spread north in a very few years. The tiny moth lays its eggs at night on the young leeks and its caterpillars burrow into the thick body of the leek. It looks as though there are one or two tiny holes, but inside the damage caused by the tiny caterpillar results in the leek rotting. You could spray every fortnight or so, which is what arable farmers do, but it is far better to keep the moths off using horticultural fleece, as many of us do to keep carrots free of that pest the carrot root fly. Slugs and snails! For years organic gardeners have tried to use barriers to keep these molluscs off their tender plants: a layer of grit, sheep’s wool, copper bands and so on. However a study by the Royal Horticultural Society has shown that none of these really works. Slug pellets contain either metaldehyde or ferric phosphate. Metaldehyde is certain to be banned soon, for it will kill other creatures that have eaten dead or dying slugs, such as hedgehogs. Ferric phosphate pellets do not have that problem. Alternatively, put out traps: jam jars of beer, sunk in the ground, or halves of citrus fruit after you have eaten or used the inside. Or go out at night with a torch….. Check the hyacinths that will flower at Christmas, which you are keeping in the dark. And check shops and garden centres, for they may be selling off tulips bulbs…and November is a great time to plant them! Malcolm Greenhalgh (Newton-le-Willows Gardeners’ Association) Note: Our Sales and Advice Hut is closed Nov and Dec.

FORGET ME NOT CAFÉ BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER Forget me nots café is held monthly at St Thomas’ Church in Golborne. It’s a fabulous get together. Set up my Maurice Kennedy in memory of his oldest cousin Derek James Twist who suffered from dementia. The café aim was to bring together the community particularly if you suffer from a health condition such as dementia. Determined to make it happen, and make it something unique, Maurice set the café up on a Saturday. He has received the support and some funding from councillors in Golborne and Lowton. From the beginning James Grundy has been a main contact but Maurice also has funding from All churches— funding one family too. They are also pleased to announce that Parkinson’s UK are now café members. There are different themes every month and October’s was craft. There is also a raffle and donations box, crafts for sale with ongoing crafts to make. There are games of bingo and background music. The people that already attend are very welcoming and friendly. The December café is on December 1st (10-12) and they are having a Christmas party. Pop along and join in the fun. For more information you can contact Maurice on 07940938227
