Golborne ex-miners badge commissioned to raise funds Golborne ex miners have commissioned a badge to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the mining disaster which claimed the lives of ten young men and left one seriously injured. have been proud to wear my badge in Parliament on behalf of the men and their families” Jo Platt MP for Leigh. Golborne ex miners march from The Queen Anne pub in Golborne to St Thomas church every five years where a service is held. This is to remember the men who lost their lives in an explosion down the pit. The next March is on 17th March and has the Bishop of Liverpool attending. They are using all proceeds from this year’s fundraising to look ahead to 2019, which will mark four decades since the disaster. Plans for the 40th anniversary look set to require more preparation and funding than in previous years, due to the rising costs of funding the memorial march - which only takes place every five years. “We now have to pay for traffic management, which is over £1,000, and we’ll have to pay for the choir and band, plus a donation to the Church, so it’s quite a sum” said Colin Rooney. Brian Rawsthorne the sole survivor has been holding annual fishing matches to raise funds. They have also had concerts at the church. A badge has also been commissioned and is being sold on Facebook, the miners home, Golborne Library and The Millstone Pub. Alternatively you can email Colin at c845Rooney@gmail.com The cost of each badge is just£2.

Lowton St Luke’s war memorial receives a funding boost from Grants for War Memorials scheme Lowton St Luke’s war memorial will benefit from a grant of £13,710 from Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by Historic England and the Wolfson Foundation. We have also received a grant from Wigan Council “Brighter Borough Fund.” The money will enable us to undertake works in order to stabilise the structure and ensure that the weathering details are restored to prevent further deterioration. Works to comprise: Renewal of decayed stonework including dressing off damaged and shaleing stonework. Resetting disturbed plinths, pavings and edgings. Repair/renewal of missing plaque fixings, cleaning and sealing of plaques. Re-pointing of stonework joints. General cleaning of the stonework. Those involved in the project are members of the fabric committee, a sub- committee of the parochial Church council of Lowton St, Luke’s Church. Frances Moreton, Director, War Memorials Trust said, "War memorials are a tangible connection to our shared past creating a link between the fallen and today. It is vital we ensure all our war memorials are in the best possible condition for their age and the charity is delighted to support this project. The centenary of World War I is a wonderful opportunity for local communities across the country to protect and conserve their war memorials. If anyone knows of any other war memorials in need of help please contact us." For further information contact Geoff Maines 01942 671505 geoffrey.maines@virginmedia.com. War Memorials Trust: 020 7233 7356 / 0300 123 0764 / 07586 920 153 / grants@warmemorials.org On 3rd March 1919 an open meeting, chaired by Rev. Francis Smith, was held to consider a memorial to those from the parish who gave their lives in the Great War. There followed an appeal to everyone to make a donation. A total of £767-10 was raised. The memorial was designed by Arthur John Hope Esq. FRIBA. Stonework was built by Mr Darlington of Leigh and bronze plaques supplied by Mr Edmondson. The memorial was dedicated in 1921. Work will begin late May 2018 under the direction of Graham Holland, Conservation Accredited Architects and by Contractors “Mono Masonry” of Oldham. When the work is completed we will hold a re-dedication of the War Memorial later in the year. Past and present members of the congregation of St. Luke’s Church are committed to preserving our beautiful building (built in 1732) and grounds which stands at the crossroads of Church Lane and Slag Lane in Lowton. We are a committed and dutiful congregation of Christians who offer welcome and support to all and, following a successful WW1 exhibition in Church in 2014, we felt it right to renovate our 100 years old War Memorial and make it a fitting tribute to the people from this community who gave their lives in the world wars. 1.War Memorials Trust is an independent registered charity. Established in 1997 due to concerns about neglect and vandalism it works to protect and conserve war memorials. It provides advice, information and administers grants schemes that assist the repair and conservation of war memorials across the UK. As a charity the Trust relies on voluntary contributions to undertake its work. Supporters include annual and life members, donors, charitable trusts and corporate contributors. www.warmemorials.org 2.War Memorials Trust administers a number of grant programmes supporting war memorials across the UK. Further information on the funding available can be found at www.warmemorials.org/grants. Examples of projects previously supported, which can be searched by county and country, can be found at www.warmemorials.org/ search-grants.

Foster Care Fortnight takes place from 14th to 27th May this year. First time foster carers Lynsey and John Cavill rose to the challenge when the first placements they chose were 2 sisters with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties. But the couple have nothing but praise for Wigan Council’s fostering service thanks to their ongoing support, providing them with the right training to really make a difference. It’s Foster Care Fortnight from 14th – 27th May and the council is urging people to come forward if they think they could offer a loving home to a young person or siblings. Lucy* (10) and Anna* (8) have been with the Cavills in Lowton for seven months and in that time, Lynsey and John have accessed support from an educational psychologist and the borough’s child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) to learn more about attachment strategies and the importance of reassurance, which has helped the girls settle into their new environment. Having experienced five placement breakdowns before, Lucy and Anna expected the same to happen again, so Lynsey and John had a long road ahead to establish “routines, rules and boundaries, and enable the children to feel part of the family unit”. Lynsey said: “John and I had spoken about fostering for a couple of years. I wasn’t happy in my career so it was the perfect time to go for it and we haven’t looked back. “I’ve always worked with children, most recently with those who have special educational needs, so my careers have given me some skills that have helped with managing Lucy and Anna. However, the training opportunities offered by the council to me and John, who has no previous experience in this area, have been fantastic.” The Cavills fostering journey began after they approached the Wigan Council service at an information evening in summer 2017. They were approved fairly quickly and were given the opportunity to provide a stable, loving home for Lucy and Anna. As well as fostering, the Cavill’s have three older children, aged 34, 32 and 23 who have all built strong relationships with the girls. Their youngest child grew up living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) which Lynsey believes has helped the girls adjust as he can empathise with their concerns. Lynsey continued: “Initially, Lucy and Anna were really unsettled and we needed an awful lot of help from the supervising social workers and our support worker. “Nothing was too much for them and they were there day or night to give us guidance, whether it was a phone call or an extra visit. This amazing level of support has been instrumental in us being able to provide the best home and family environment for Lucy and Anna. “It’s also the whole reason why we came to Wigan Council instead of going to a private fostering agency. They might offer more money but for us it was all about making a difference in young people’s lives and the network of support and the guidance on hand with Wigan Council is second to none.” Lucy and Anna are now comfortable in the Cavill’s home and have slotted into their new family unit. They receive regular positive feedback from their teachers and are building friendships with other children. Their support worker still takes Lucy and Anna to school twice a week and regularly takes them for after-school activities to check-in and give Lynsey and John some respite. Through The Deal for Foster Carers, Wigan Council is committed to ensuring foster carers have the right training and support so they can provide the best home for our young people. Local team gemstone Cheerleading have had a brilliant start to the season We are recruiting dancers to join our existing squads and 3 NEW squads from July. Starting from age 4 years right up to Mums squads - 25 years+. We are now also fundraising towards getting our own forever gym locally. Since then Gemstone has more than doubled in size with beginner and elite training sessions across Lowton, Croft and Tydlesley area. We have now reached over 40 dancers and continue to grow. Three of our squad attended Manchester ICE comp in February (first time dancing for most dancers) and came home with two 3rd places and a 5th Place!! In March the same 3 squads then took to the Blackpool tower ballroom floor to impress the Judges. An amazing experience for everyone including our tiny Pom team at (5 & 6 years old) We had two soloist Isla Colding and Mollie Holt who danced at this Cheerdance UK competition. Mollie aged 13 came home with a 3rd place trophy and Isla aged 7 made the final out of 30+ dancers. Junior Pom diamonds team placed 3rd. The girls attend regular local events including Leigh carnival to promote gemstone and do plenty of bag packs to help keep growing. We are currently on Golborne asda green token awards to help. Junior Pom dancers Mia and Mollie- ‘Over the years Gemstone has made me feel more confident and athletic as I am now able to help with beginner classes and coach alongside Lydia. I also like raising lots of money for club fund and taking part in fundraisers as in the future we hope to have our own gym. Gemstone allows you to make lots of new friends and see new faces. I have loved this season and I can’t wait for season 3 of Gemstones.’

I think that May is the most dynamic gardening month because just about anything no matter how tender can be sown or planted in the garden, and on through the great growing months to September, and even October and early November in a mild, warm autumin front of us. Some of us have an allotment or a garden big enough to have a vegetable plot. In which case get the runner beans, French beans, sweet corn and main crop potatoes in. Also, when one crop is finished, get another in immediately: just tidy up the ground and give it a quick dose of fish, blood and bone or Growmore fertiliser. The one important point: don’t plant brassicas (members of the cabbage family) in ground where they have been grown in the past two years. Even if you don’t have a vegetable plot, provided you have a patch of yard or garden or even a balcony that gets some sun, you can grow something to eat. Get a couple of tubs or troughs, fill them with compost, and you can grow crops of lettuce, spring onions, radishes, pak choi, baby carrots, Chinese leaves, spinach...even some early potatoes and summer cabbages. I have lots of containers, and get three or four different crops out of most every year, using the same compost and adding a bit of fertiliser (as above) before the next planting o sowing. Food that you have just gathered tastes far better than the supermarket stuff that has been out of the ground for days. The last frosts should be gone so now is the time to plant ‘half-hardy’ annuals (that frost kills) in your flower beds, tubs and troughs and hanging baskets, and similarly tender vegetables like French and runner beans, sweet corn and courgettes.

During Spring and Summer birds require high protein foods, especially while they are moulting. Only feed selected foods at this time of year. These food include:

•

Black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, mealworms, waxworms, mixes for insectivorous birds, good seed mix. No loose peanuts.

•

Summer seed mixture are good foods to provide. Soft apples and pears cut in half, bananas and grapes are also good.

•

Some people use soaked dog or cat food and tinned pet foods, but these may attract magpies, crows and cats.

•

Avoid using peanuts, fat and bread at this time, these can be harmful if adult birds feed them to their nestlings. If you put out peanuts, only do so in suitable mesh feeders that will not allow sizeable pieces of peanuts to be taken, this reduces the choking risk to chicks.

•

Home-made fat balls can go soft and rancid in summer weather and should be avoided. Commercially produced fat bars are suitable for summer feeding. Discard remains after 3 weeks.

•

Temporary food shortage can occur at almost any time of the year, and if this happens during the breeding season, extra food on your bird table can make a big difference to the survival of young.

•

Birds time their breeding period to exploit the availability of natural foods: earthworms in the case of blackbirds and song thrushes, and caterpillars in the case of tits and chaffinches. It is now known that if the weather turns cold or wet during spring or summer, severe shortage of insect food can occur, and if the weather is exceptionally dry, earthworms will be unavailable to ground feeding birds because of the hard soil. In order to help with this, mealworms can be provided to prevent starvation.

Many will have made the mistake of buying these from garden centres weeks ago, put them out and lost them. If you have made this mistake, learn from it and in future postpone the buying and planting, thereby reducing the garden centre profit (you buy only once). Three tips when it comes to hanging baskets and tubs: 1. Cram in more plants than you think you need; 2. Instead of spending hard-earned money on water retaining gel, save up those sponges you’ve been using for washing up, line the baskets or tubs with them before adding compost and they will hold lots of water; 3. Feed as well as water when the plants are in flower (Baby Bio is ideal). The spring bulbs will mostly have faded. Give them a feed (half strength liquid tomato fertiliser is fine) and they will reward you next year. If you want to prune a spring-flowering shrub, perhaps because it is getting out of hand, do so immediately after the flowers have faded. Keep on top of the weeding, and if you find that the weeds have flowered and may have set seed, put them in a bucket of water for a fortnight before putting them in the compost bin. Finally, if you have some fruit trees, pollination should be taking place when the flowers open. Keep an eye on things like plums and damsons, apples and pears. Soon the first fruits will start to swell, but at least some flowers will fade and fall off without a fruit developing. What we do with them in June depends on the quantity that ‘sets’ fruit. Newton-le-Willows Gardeners’ Association Sales and Advice Hut is open Saturday and Sunday mornings, 10.30-12 noon, and on Wednesday evenings (7-8pm). All welcome. Malcolm Greenhalgh

Believe in Golborne (Previously Golborne 5 Year Plan) At the latest meeting of the Golborne 5 Year Plan, held on 12 th April, many items were discussed such as, policing, highways, cleansing, planning and the money generated by the new developments in Golborne and a great deal of consensus was achieved as to the way forward for the group. This followed recommendations from the “Task & Finish” group meeting held on the 27th March. Before we can begin to apply for funding for the group, not only from the council but from the wider community and Government sources, we need to be a constituted organisation and it was therefore agreed that this will take place on the 17th May 2018. An AGM will be held to elect a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and all members of the community are invited to apply for any of these posts. The group is now operating under its new name of “Believe in Golborne” and we are really looking ahead to moving forward with our plans to improve our community, town and the lives of people within it. The launch of the Community Alcohol Partnership took place on the 22 nd March and many local businesses were involved. Floor stencils and contact with local shops which sell alcohol took place. This is an ongoing strategy to try to deal with underage drinking. The x-zone (youth club) has been a huge success with almost a hundred registered young people at the last meeting at Heath Street Methodist Church. It has been so successful that attempts are being made to now replicate the model by creating a similar operation for the younger members of our community who are not within the age range currently catered for. It was great to see more new faces attending the meeting at the Library and we may, in the near future, need to look for a bigger venue, such is the interest from you, our local community. If you can possibly attend the meeting on 17th May at 7.00pm in Golborne Library you will be very welcome and your views and opinions listened to.
