Year 6 celebrate the end of Sats in style Toby Carvery helped St Luke’s C of E Primary celebrate the end of their sats in style. As many parents know it’s a long and hard slog before and during the Sats week. Toby Carvery helped by not only giving all the class a carvery but they even decorated the restaurant and celebrated with them.
Alison Eastham, Year 6 teacher said “Toby Carvery and the staff had made the area really nice with a big ‘well done’ poster and balloons. The staff were so friendly and would not even accept payment for the staff meals!” Toby Carvery helps the Year 6 pupils celebrate every year but this year they went above and beyond. This made a huge difference to the children and they had a fabulous time even celebrating with an ice cream when they got back to school. Good luck to them all as they head off to high school.

NEW COMMUNITY CAFE IN LOWTON! Did you every wonder what happened to the old Youth Club Newton Rd? What about the pensioner hut next door? Due to difficult conditions despite efforts by its previous manager Sandy Franzen, Lowton Youth and Community Centre fell into disrepair and almost disuse. Through a long arduous process, the first of it’s kind that would pave the way for others throughout the borough. Leigh Judo Club was successful in securing the asset as well as their long term future. I spoke to Founder and Chairman of Leigh judo Club and local resident Luke Brown about his plans:
What were your first aims when you took over the building? The Lowton community have desperately needed somewhere like this for a long time, particularly for our young people. As the b uilding was in such a bad state, the main aim was to make it water tight and safe for people to use. From there began the construction and installation of our sports dojo so that judo classes could start and we could then invest in the rest of the building such as the cafe, healthcare clinic and recording studio. With over 12 leaks in one room alone, it was a mammoth task.
How did you do the work? What support have you had?
Volunteers. The Leigh judo club and Leigh and Westhoughton Jujitsu Club as well as members from our local community. It was an amazing achievement and a privilege to be part of the team of dedicated volunteers who gave their time, efforts and enthusiasm to ensuring the long term future and providing benefit for the entire Lowton community.
The support from the our local community has been great as well as our local councillors and LENDEF. We’ve also had support from a number of local business such as Craig at Local Carpets, Lowton Physio and in particular Paul at T&G Fitted Furniture and at Kris KMN joinery who have been incredible!
What do you currently have going on? Our new community cafe is the hub for the centre and provide hot and cold drinks and food. We currently provide a wide range of classes for all ages from physical classes such as judo, Ju-jitsu, exercise classes and tai chi. We have many Start Well baby classes such as Baby Massage, Physi-bodies and Crafty Creations and a mother and baby toddler group. We also have a Forces Brunch for veterans and people serving inner forces and our dementia cafe every other Tuesday. We also plan to start a new Youth Club and cinema night for our young people. We are always open to ideas as well…
When is the launch? Our new community cafe is NOW OPEN most weekdays from 10 - 4pm and we have a big family open day with BBQ and bouncy castle on Saturday June 17th! Open to all.
Do you hire the centre out? We hire out the centre for all kinds of things from birthday parties, business meetings, get-togethers. We have our community cafe room, recording studio, healthcare clinic and sports dojo as well as our outside areas. As volunteers and a community based organisations we make sure to keep the hire as cheap and best value as possible. If people want to enquire or get in touch we are on FB @LowtonCommunityCafe or via our website:

Mason Bennett is a Little Big Shot! Child genius Mason wowed the audience on ITV’s Little Big Shot Mason Bennet, son of Craig Bennett of Local Carpets appeared on the show after the discovered he had become the youngest member of MENSA from the North West. Craig, who runs Local Carpets in Leigh and Warrington said “His personality came out to show that he is like any normal, funny five year old little boy. Everything is just fun for him. He can tell you about the solar system, universe, periodic table and lots more. Mason has an IQ of 150 overall with higher standards of excellence in maths and pattern recognition. This is even more incredible given that he suffered meningitis twice during his first seven months. Craig strongly believes that this has impacted on the way his son can remember all of these things. He said “It’s a well know fact that when your brain is damaged it can adapt and use other areas. At the time doctors feared Mason would suffer from brain damage. He was
only six months old when he contracted meningitis for the first time and Craig added
“to beat it you have to be a fighter. To beat it twice it shows what a great little fighter he really is”. Commenting on Mason’s appearance Dawn said: “I wanted to have the moment of meeting them for the first time on camera and I think that was the right decision as it is a new person for them to meet so they are either interested or not interested. “It is completely cheerful. The kids come along and they have a chat with me on a sofa and we have a bit of a laugh and find out what they do. Sometimes they invite me to join in the only intent is to entertain, have a laugh and enjoy watching what they do, they get
to enjoy performing.” Craig and Mason are big supporters of the meningitis charity #meningitisnow.

Sunday 21st May saw the Crowning of May Queen Elect Megan Howarth at St Thomas’ Church. The first May Queen festival in Golborne was held
in 1880, mainly organised by a local tradesman Alfred Caunce. We spoke to Megan’s mum Kaye and she told us how Megan felt about the day. Kaye told us “She was very nervous but really happy. She felt like a princess on her special day.
She especially liked being crowned and is looking forward to opening the big lunch next week. Megan turns 9 in June. Her retinue consists of her little sister Maisie, Libby, Amillya and Evie”. Best of luck on your year as May Queen Megan from all at Local Living!
