LOWTON WEST DEFIBRILLATOR FUND You may have noticed that the Slag Lane telephone box has been decommissioned and the pay phone has been removed. However the K6 kiosk is to have a second life. It has been adopted by the Lowton West Defibrillator Fund who’s members are actively repairing and repainting it ready for the installation of a 24 hour Public Access Defibrillator point. The fund needs to raise £3000 to buy the cabinet, defibrillator and ongoing expenses that include, insurance, replacing batteries and adhesive contact pads should the unit be used. Inside the K6 kiosk will be a coded access secure cabinet that will contain the defibrillator. To access the unit a user needs to dial 999 or 112 and ask for Ambulance who will give the access code ask for the address where the casualty is and send an ambulance. In order to raise funds we are hosting a concert by Wigan Ukulele Band in the Independent Methodist Church on Saturday 25th January at 7-30pm. Admission £5.00 Children £3.00.

#thatfeeling That feeling .... when you achieve something you worked hard for. As a slimming World consultant that feeling for us is seeing our members work hard every week , chipping away at those lbs. Our job is to make sure we help our members come away from group with a plan for the week . We help break habits, manage tricky situations and inspire new ways to cook and shop for the whole family (even though all three of us cant cook! We learn each week too) For 2020 we want to give you ‘that feeling" starting with a warm welcome in the group you choose, like minded friendly people and bags of fun ! How would that feel ? Claire runs Tuesdays at the at Travelodge This year #thatfeeling for me was going to a family wedding in this dress. 4 months prior to this picture that feeling for me was one of dread. Having been a target member for 10 years life suddenly got in the away, I cant pinpoint what it was but suddenly my clothes were tight. I knew having seen a picture of myself what I needed to do. Don’t sit at home alone come and let us help you. Love Claire x

For me, #thatfeeling is one of empowerment. Achieving my own weight loss and fitness goals means I know how to help others achieve theirs. #thatfeeling comes whenever I finish a run or challenge. Being able to wear the clothes I want to and not the ones I have to. #thatfeeling? Its the best feeling in the world and you can have it too. Much love Julie xx

I joined SlimmingWorld on the 5th December 2018 the day I went to the fertility clinic and got told they wouldn’t allow me to have IVF until I got my BMI to 30, I walked into group crying and a sobbing mess but determined I was going to achieve my dream of becoming a mum. On the 14th February 2019 I found out I was pregnant and by joining SlimmingWorld I naturally fell pregnant after 3 years of trying and being told we’d probably need IVF, fast forward nearly 1 year since I joined to achieve that dream I have had Oliver and I’m 1 stone 4.5lbs lighter than 9 weeks ago when I rejoined

Local afternoon tea a great success! On the 11th December local children Ethan, Rhea, James, Jessica and Matthew hosted an afternoon tea for the residents of Bridgewater day care in Golborne. The residents were treated to bingo, music and some lovely singing from Lowton High school choir. Santa paid a visit in the afternoon and gave each residents a gift for Christmas. A lovely day was had by everyone. The children started writing to local businesses to ask for donations back in September. They have been collecting gifts and they all baked and provided a lovely afternoon tea which was enjoyed by everyone. On behalf of the children and the residents they would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that donated towards the event to make it a huge success. Pictured above and to the left: organisers and Lowton High choir

Asda’s local fantastic team of community champions are sprinkling a bit of Christmas magic on our green token scheme by giving local good causes double the amount they usually receive. Thanks to a £1 million investment from the Asda Foundation, the groups nominated for the latest customer vote in our stores across the UK will receive £1,000 if they win or £500 if they finish as runners-up. Our community champion are also busy helping local groups, schools and charities apply for extra donations from the Asda Foundation to help pay for Christmas parties and treats. Cheryl from our Golborne store is one of the community champions helping local groups this Christmas. She said: "We’re really excited to be spreading the magic this Christmas by supporting three local charity groups with double the donation they were expecting. We couldn’t be happier that ASDA Foundation is doubling their investment meaning we are donating £2000 across the groups with the winner receiving £1000 - Don’t forget to use your vote!”

Hibernation Time for Hedgehogs Most hedgehogs will now be in hibernation (but not all), some may not hibernate at all and some may come out of hibernation during mild spells to seek much needed food and water. A hedgehog needs to be 650g in weight in order to survive this long period. If you are tidying your garden and find a hibernating hog please leave it undisturbed and put back the leaves, twigs, grasses, etc, which it has used as its hibernation materials. Also check before you move any bags of garden cuttings, leaves or compost in case a hedgehog has decided to occupy it for the winter months. Check that drinking water is free of ice during extreme weather, all wildlife will struggle to find water to drink during icy conditions.

When will the hedgehogs come out of hibernation?

When a hedgehog comes out of hibernation is not based just on the weather; other factors like the size of the hedgehog, whether it is its first hibernation, whether it is a male or female, can all have a bearing. Mild weather probably helps some of the smaller hedgehogs to survive the winter because there is a little more food around for them and they are kept going until the food is more abundant in the springtime. Severe weather sadly kills off the underweight hedgehogs that do not have a regular food supply. Although good swimmers many die in ponds because there is no way out for them. Try to be extra vigilant and ensure your pond has a way of escape via a plank into the water, shallow edges like a pebble beach, a couple of big stones partially submerged at the edges, or heavy planting round the edge so that hogs can climb out. Some of the smaller or older hedgehogs will be very weak when they wake so if you see any walking with a wobble or out in the day then they need to be rescued.

Rescuing a Hedgehog

Using gardening gloves, scoop up the animal and place in a in a high-sided box which has newspaper in the bottom and some old tea towels/ fleeces for it to snuggle into and hide. Fill a hot water bottle with warm (not too hot) water, wrap the bottle in a towel and place this next to the hedgehog but make sure the hedgehog can move away from the hot water bottle if it becomes too warm. If you don’t have a hot water bottle you can use a plastic drinks bottle or empty carton (again wrapped in a towel). It can have some meaty dog or cat food, some cat biscuits, and a dish of water. If the animal is injured please take it direct to a veterinary surgery asap. More information and advice is available by calling Irene Thomson at Lowton Hedgehog Rescue on 07950933410

I’m excited to be working in conjunction with the award-winning team at The Holiday Village, who are as passionate as I am about finding the right holiday for you along with exceptional customer service. The Holiday Village is part of The Travel Village Group, which is a 4th generation family business, and established 60 years in June this year - quite a feat these days! I have seen many changes within the Travel Industry over the years. The types of holidays and destinations my customers want to book now are very different from when I started working in Travel. Majority of the holidays I confirmed would have departed in the Summer school holidays to a traditional Spanish destination for either 7 or 14 nights. The main criteria would be a pool, near the beach and evening entertainment, how things change…. The more exotic destinations are now more accessible and affordable. My customers want more choice with flexible durations, more long-haul and a wider choice of things to do in resort especially experience type holidays. Keeping up to date is imperative to the success of my business, I therefore attend as many training sessions as possible from all leading Tour Operators and Hoteliers. This way I have the knowledge to make recommendations and sometimes lucky enough to visit, it’s part of the job I really love! I am also seeing families wanting a more educational and cultural type holiday in place of the bucket & spade, more multi-generational “grandparents” travelling with their children and grandchildren. Villa holidays are selling quickly and ideal for larger families and groups. Ocean cruising is also popular allowing families to travel together but with their own space and choice of restaurants. Making memories seems to be high on everyone’s agenda, and rightly so… There is also a high demand for “Winter Sun” and not just the Canaries or Mainland Spain. Travelling to the Middle East is in demand including Oman direct from Manchester, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khamiah, Doha and of course Dubai. Abu Dhabi is attracting more families and now have two great attractions Warner Bros Studios & Ferrari World and In Ras Al Khamiah you will find the world's largest zipline, not for the faint hearted…. So whatever destination or type of holiday you are looking for, booking your holiday with me comes with peace of mind for you and your family. I offer the assurance of being ABTA registered and ATOL bonded, which provides you with 100% consumer protection. I do hope that you’ll get in touch for all your travel plans I look forward to hearing from you Cheryl
