JON-JAMES, SUPER-HERO! Local boy Jon-James has proved he is a real life super hero as he dedicates his birthday to helping others. Jon-James Touhey was seven a few weeks ago and enjoyed a fabulous party to celebrate. Rather than wanting lots of presents from his party guests he asked for donations to two different charities. He wanted to support the Ponsetit clinic at Royal Manchester Children’s hospital where he has been treated since born with a club foot. He also wanted to support the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. . Mum Becky Hodgson who lives in Golborne said “He’s been undergoing surgery on his foot since he was born and it was always done at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. We have been going there for nearly seven years. We thought it would be nice to give something back so instead of presents he said he would like to raise some money by people donating whatever they would spend on a present” Jon-James who attends Golborne Community Primary school managed to raise £122. A fabulous amount of money and what an inspiring young man!

CHEEKY MONKEYS DAY OUT AT GULLIVER’S WORLD Cheeky Monkeys playgroup has had an exciting few days as we finish for the summer holidays. We have sadly said goodbye to some of our little ones as they start their new adventure in September when they start school. They proudly received their Graduation Certificates, something for them to look back on as they get older. Also we had an outing to Gulliver's World at Warrington partly funded by collecting the green tokens at Golborne Asda. Everyone, including us volunteers had a great time and the sun was shining too. Playgroup will open again on 7th September, 9.15 to 11.15 am every Monday and Thursday. Lots to do with craft, singing and free play plus two parties a year at Christmas and Summer. Everybody welcome at Cheeky Monkeys Playgroup, Golborne Sports Club, Stonecross Lane. Tel Elaine 07799785280 for any further information.

Careers day inspires children Pupils at St Catherine's RC Primary in Lowton spent a fascinating day trying out a variety of different jobs at a Careers Day for the whole school. Children as young as four got a taste for the world of work when they were visited by a number of different professionals, all of whom were keen for the children to find out more about their day jobs. Throughout the day the children spent time learning to do first aid with a visiting nurse, learning the basics of hospitality with a hotel manager and imagining themselves captaining their own aeroplane with a pilot. The children even got to meet a vet and two visiting dogs, both of whom were rescued after being mistreated. There was also plenty to learn about a career in the emergency services - thanks to a visiting fire fighter and police officer, with children given the chance to try out the panda car for size. Meanwhile, careers in more creative industries were explored, thanks to a workshop provided by a graphic designer, who inspired the children to create their own logos and posters. Head teacher of St Catherine's RC Primary, Mrs Leck, said: "The children really enjoyed the careers day, especially the fact that they got really hands-on experience of each of the different kinds of jobs. "It was a wonderful and inspiring day, and we'd really like to thank all our visitors for coming in and sharing an insight into their jobs and careers. "The children really have been inspired and were a credit to themselves and school with their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the day." She also praised Mrs Singleton, Reception class teacher, for her hard work in organising the day. Thanks go to all the volunteers who came in to talk about their jobs with the children. They were: Nurse Natalie Coyle, Pilot Mr Fox, Hotel Manager Debbie Hodge, Mr Rafferty and police officer Lindsey Topping, Chad and Gina the vets, Andrew the paramedic, Dave Mayo from the police and Matt Fryer from the Fire Service.

DEVA DIVAS QUADRATHLON A WORLDS FIRST! The first ever 'Ladies Only Quadrathlon' IN THE WORLD took place on 16 July 2017 on the banks of the River Dee in Chester, running in parallel to the Deva Divas Triathlon which, in 2016, won the coveted British Triathlon ‘Event of the Year’, Triathlon England ‘Club Event of the Year’ and also North West ‘Regional Race of the Year’! It being the 11th year of the Deva Divas which aims to encourage women into the sport of triathlon, organisers Sally Napthen and Jean Ashley wanted to celebrate with something a little bit different – hence the Deva Divas Quadrathlon – if ever there was history in the making, this was it! The biggest draw to the race, apart from it being a World First was the fabulous 12-week canoe course (from beginner to K1 paddler) that was offered as part of the training package. The morning of the race dawned and it was a bit drizzly, but that did absolutely nothing to dampen the spirits of the Quadrathlon ladies. All the kayaks were laid out by the wonderful helpers, whilst all the participants racked their bikes, helmets, paddles, buoyancy aids and other race paraphernalia in transition. The entries next year for the Deva Divas Quad will sell like hot cakes for sure! A massive congratulations all of you that entered! you are now Quadrathlon Queens – wear those beautiful t-shirts with pride! Local lady Francine had an amazing time and, as you can see, is as proud of her medal as she is her t-shirt!

NATIONAL SUCCESS FOR LOCAL FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

Established in 1996 by close friends Craig Abbott and Mike Wade, the pair have always employed local tradesmen, taken huge pride in their roots and lived by the traits of hard work, honesty and friendliness synonymous with the region. For the pair, the accolade has been recognition for the hard work and dedication which they have poured into their business for over 20 years. At a glamorous ceremony at London’s Wembley Stadium set against the backdrop of the famous pitch which has hosted the world’s sporting elite; the Abbott-Wade family were proud, not only to represent the finest family businesses in our region, but to do so at the prestigious National Awards amongst the best of the UK & Ireland's 3 million family firms. Following a rigorous judging process by leading entrepreneurs which included the likes of Charlie Mullins OBE, David Kerfoot MBE, Penny Power OBE and Rami Ranger CBE, the company shone in their category and were presented the award by Anita Brightly-Hodges, Managing Director of the Family Business Place and Olympian Jamie Baulch. "Whatever part of the country our work takes us to, it’s always good to come home," says director Craig Abbott. "That’s why we were thrilled to hear we’d been shortlisted to represent the North West at the National Family Business Awards and now to have won the Best Small Business in the region is a massive honour." There are three generations working for the company which includes fathers, step-sons, in-laws and cousins. Amalia Brightley-Gillott, Awards Director for the National Family Business Awards is blown away each year by the variety and calibre of family businesses who enter the awards. "Few people realise that every time they visit their local hairdresser, stay in a boutique hotel, buy a bottle of wine, have a necklace made or buy cheese in the supermarket that they are in fact supporting passionate, dedicated families who have set up in business together. They might be hundreds of years old or new kids on the block. These awards are our chance to say ‘thank you’ and give recognition for their contribution.” It’s been a great accomplishment by these two local tradesmen; not just to win the award at the first time of asking but to thrive in a challenging economy. It’s been no easy road to Wembley. Like any small business they've had set backs and overcome hurdles. They've seen competitors come and go but stuck by their principles, treated their customers with respect and been committed to doing the best job they can to build a reputation which is the envy of the staircase industry. “We’re very proud of the Abbott-Wade family. It’s hard work running a small business as I have witnessed first hand. Long hours, hard graft, stress and lots of sacrifices made along the way. I may be biased but if anyone deserves this recognition it’s Mike and Craig; both genuine, honest and kind hearted to the core. Well done to all the team!” - Johanna Wade
