I am grateful to my dad and his ability to instill in me the merits of hard work. Growing up, I learned how to landscape, mow lawns, change the oil on my car and work with tools. Even though my path was always to attend college, my dad showed me that a well-rounded man needed to always be handy. With those principles in mind, I embarked on an ambitious father/son, end-of-Summer project with my 20 year-old son. Being that it was his last week at home before returning to college, he was less than excited at the prospect of a 5-day roofing project. We were filthy on certain days, from brooms, power washers and painting. Out in the sun for days, we repaired and sealed a flat roof duplex in Dana Point. Although complaints were issued to his boss, he knew what was required of him – physical labor. We problemsolved throughout, doing our best to work most efficiently to complete each task. No iPhones or screens for hours at a time. Instead we had lengthy conversations. In the end, a silicone sealed roof was completed, just in time for El Niño. He took pride in seeing what he accomplished with his hard work. I have such respect for tradesmen. I hope I boosted his desire to finish his education, with the lesson that a career using your mind will be much less taxing than one requiring your body. Thanks for reading The Local Dish Magazine!

SURF & TURF THERAPY Surf & Turf Therapy is a nonprofit organization providing physical and speech therapy, adaptive recreation and mental health services through equine, surf and other nontraditional settings for children and adults with disabilities throughout South Orange County. Founded and led by Dr. Jillian Stewart, PT, DPT, HPCS, Surf & Turf uses meaningful activities to support physical development, communication, emotional wellbeing, confidence and independence. Surf & Turf Therapy serves participants with a wide range of diagnoses and support needs, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, rare genetic conditions, neurological diagnoses and developmental disabilities. Individualized services help participants work toward goals ranging from improved mobility and communication to greater confidence, independence and participation at home, school and in the community. As demand continues to grow, community support helps Surf & Turf Therapy expand access to its specialized programs. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Alzheimer’s Association Orange County Chapter invites the community to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s South Orange County at Sendero Field in Rancho Mission Viejo, uniting families, caregivers, advocates and supporters in the fight against this devastating disease. Festivities begin at 9 a.m., with the Opening Ceremony at 10:15 a.m. and the Walk at 10:30 a.m. Participants will come together to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. One of the most inspiring moments is the Promise Garden ceremony, where participants carry flowers representing their personal connection to the cause. Blue represents those living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, purple honors those who have lost someone to the disease, yellow represents caregivers and orange symbolizes advocates and supporters. Together, the flowers are a powerful reminder that no one faces this journey alone. Funds raised through the Walk support critical research, educational programs, caregiver resources, support groups and the Alzheimer’s Association’s 24/7 Helpline (800-272-3900).

TOAST TO THE CASA
An Evening in Paradise SEPTEMBER 19 | 5 TO 9:30 P.M. San Clemente’s Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens will transform into a tropical paradise for its signature fundraising gala, Toast to the Casa: An Evening in Paradise, on Saturday, September 19, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. The event marks an exciting year ahead as Casa Romantica prepares to celebrate the centennial of its historic home and 25 years as a cultural center in 2027.

This year’s roaming gala invites guests to explore the historic home and gardens while enjoying live music, dancing, food, drinks and playful experiences. Hula dancers will welcome guests with fresh coconuts filled with coconut water, while San Clemente’s own Kalama Brothers take center stage in the Courtyard. DJ NOMIS will keep the celebration going on the Ocean Terrace with dancing and sweeping Pacific Ocean views. Guests will enjoy bites and beverages from local and regional partners, along with the Flamingo Toss Wine Game, live auction and online silent auction. Auction highlights include fine art, a Bali vacation and a Holland America cruise. David and Marcy Peter have been named Honorary Chairs in recognition of their longstanding leadership, philanthropy and dedication to Casa Romantica. Their support has helped the nonprofit through historic restoration projects and its recent landslide recovery. Proceeds from Toast to the Casa support Casa Romantica’s mission to preserve its historic home and gardens while providing arts, cultural and educational programming to the community. Single unreserved tickets are $225. Sponsorship opportunities start at $1,000 and include reserved Courtyard seating near the main stage and live auction.
