Father’s Day takes on a whole different meaning when it’s the inaugural celebration of your paternity. I’m thrilled for my two nephews, who will be holding their newborns closely as they enjoy their first Father’s Day. I have been so fortunate to be a dad to both a son and a daughter. Though we as parents tell ourselves we are going to treat all our kids the same, that’s just not the case.
My daughter has had me wrapped around her finger since day one. Her smile melts me. My son, on the other hand, can drive me crazy. I feel I was always a lot harder on him as I tried to toughen him up and prepare him for manhood. He also reminds me of myself, and that’s scary. Both kids are fantastic and on the right track in life, thanks mostly to my wife, though I’m still claiming some of that credit as their dad.
Our family is attending a high school graduation party this week for a fine young man we have known since birth. Time passes quickly, and these monumental moments in life remind us of that. They also make you feel old. Go make more lasting memories this summer with your family and friends.

Their motto says it all: “We don’t make knives, we make them better!” Founder Alan Schroder left a career in insurance to pursue his passion full-time, launching the business alongside partner Melvin Giles. What began as a mobile operation serving restaurants across Southern California quickly grew into a trusted name, eventually leading to the opening of a retail location in Signal Hill.
Local residents can take advantage of convenient weekly service, with mobile sharpening available every Friday at Dana Point Hardware and on the final Friday of each month at Gelson’s in Monarch Bay Plaza. Knives can also be dropped off at Dana Point Hardware during the week for Friday pickup. For added convenience, Mr. Sharpe offers residential sharpening for events, gatherings and private appointments.
Many customers come in ready to replace their knives, only to be surprised by the renewed precision and performance after sharpening. In addition to kitchen knives, Mr. Sharpe sharpens and repairs a wide range of items, including chef knives, Japanese knives, CUTCO knives, bread knives, steak knives, utility scissors, garden tools and pocket knives. Pricing ranges from $8 to $15 per item, depending on size and any repairs required, with most services completed in under 30 minutes. Outdoor lighting now plays a central role in how homeowners design and use their backyards. Bradburn evaluates every project through three key priorities: safety, usability and visual appeal. Proper illumination of walkways, steps and pool areas helps reduce
hazards, while perimeter lighting contributes to a greater sense of security. Task lighting ensures outdoor kitchens, dining areas and gathering spaces remain functional at night. Thoughtful accent lighting completes the picture, highlighting landscaping and architectural features so the yard looks just as appealing from inside the home as it does outdoors.
Homeowners are also rethinking how lighting supports the way they entertain and relax. Bistro-style lighting adds warmth to seating areas, while specialized lighting allows recreational spaces to be used well into the evening. In her designs, Bradburn prioritizes longlasting materials, often selecting brass fixtures with lifetime warranties. She relies on layered lighting techniques and warm color temperatures to avoid harsh glare and create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.

LEGENDARY SURF SHOP CELEBRATES 35 YEARS!
When it comes to gearing up for surfing and the beach, there’s been no better place in Dana Point to turn to over the past 35 years than Killer Dana Surf Shop. From sandals to boards, trunks to wax, the shop offers a full line of quality merchandise for the surf-and-sand lifestyle.
Killer Dana is celebrating its anniversary with a special block party on Saturday, June 13, from noon to 4 p.m. at its expanded store at Golden Lantern and Del Prado. The celebration will feature live music, giveaways and special offers from apparel brand partners. The shop has also released exclusive 35th anniversary T-shirts and gear available for purchase in-store only. From Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14, customers will receive a raffle ticket for every $20 spent in-store for a chance to win prizes from participating vendors.
Killer Dana partners Mike and Carrie Foster, along with Steve and Leigh Dunn, made the bold move in 2024 to relocate both the original Violet Lantern store and the harbor location to the former Rite Aid building. The partners also worked with Thrifty corporate to preserve the longtime Thrifty Ice Cream counter within the expanded shop, allowing local residents to continue enjoying their favorite flavors in a unique surf shop setting.
Gary “GW” Wright founded Killer Dana in 1991, naming the shop after the legendary local surf break. The notorious “Killer Dana” wave once posed a formidable challenge for surfers, breaking dangerously close to the rocks lining the Dana Point cliffs and shoreline. The break was largely destroyed following construction of the harbor and break wall in 1966.
Over the past 35 years, Killer Dana has become an internationally recognized brand and a favorite destination for local surfers and beachgoers alike. ANNUAL IRVINE GREEK FEST
For a weekend, Irvine transforms into a vibrant slice of Greece as St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church hosts its 46th annual Irvine Greek Fest from June 26–28. Held on the church campus at 4949 Alton Parkway, the three-day celebration brings the sights, sounds and flavors of Greece to Irvine in a lively, family-friendly setting.
Modeled after a traditional Greek street fair, the festival offers something for all ages. Guests can explore the “Agora” marketplace, browse boutique shops and a bookstore, enjoy carnival rides in the kids’ zone, and experience live Greek music and folk dancing throughout the weekend. It’s an immersive cultural experience that invites visitors to be “Greek for a day.”
Food is at the heart of the celebration, with a menu of authentic, timehonored favorites. From gyros and Greek fries to spanakopita, dolmathes and pastichio, each dish reflects generations of tradition. Guests can also enjoy Greek coffee and frappés at the kafenio, along with an assortment of homemade pastries. A festival favorite, loukoumathes—warm Greek doughnuts drizzled with honey and cinnamon—are known to sell out quickly.
Live entertainment includes performances by the Takis Kokotas Band and traditional dance showcases by St. Paul’s Agape and Zoi groups. A Taverna bar will serve Greek beer and wine, with a big-screen TV airing major sporting events throughout the weekend.
Visitors are also invited to tour the church, home to more than 20,000 square feet of intricate mosaic artwork created by Italian artisans. Inspired by ancient Christian traditions, the space offers a unique opportunity to learn more about Orthodox Christianity and its rich history.
Festival hours are 5–10 p.m. Friday, noon–10 p.m. Saturday and noon–9 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5, with free entry for children under 12, seniors, veterans, active-duty military and first responders. For more information, visit IrvineGreekFest.com.
