As we approach a milestone of our nation’s independence this 4th of July, memories of our bicentennial celebration of 1976 flash before me. As a seven year old, I recall what a huge moment it was for our country’s 200th birthday. It immediately reminds me of how old I am. Neighborhood parades, block parties, bricks of firecrackers and bottle rockets were all part of our annual festivities. Another tradition was watching my oldest brother’s annual capture by his friends, who swarmed him every July 4th and tossed him, fully clothed, into the neighbor’s pool. It was a hilarious, yet harmless, tradition that is embedded in my mind.
Not only do we get to enjoy the birthday of the USA, but we are reveling in the excitement of World Cup fever and our men’s soccer team. I am hoping that by the time this issue reaches your mailbox, both the USA and Croatian teams are still advancing through the tournament. Hosting the World Cup has been a great kick-off to a month of national pride. Knowing the attention of the entire world is focused on North America, and in part, the USA, is in itself exciting. I’m happy our nation can host this momentous event and show our guests the exceptional aspects of America.

A sharp knife is one of the most important tools in any kitchen. It makes prep faster, cleaner and safer, but even the best blades need proper care between professional sharpenings. The good news is that a few simple habits can help your knives stay sharper longer.
• ALWAYS WASH KNIVES BY HAND:
Use warm water and mild soap, then dry them right away.
• AVOID THE DISHWASHER:
Heat, moisture and contact with other utensils can damage the edge. Storage matters, too. Keep knives in a block, sheath, drawer insert or on a magnetic strip so the blades are protected.
• YOUR CUTTING BOARD MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE:
Wood and plastic boards are much easier on knife edges than glass, stone, ceramic or metal. Avoid using knives to scrape food across the board, pry open packages, cut frozen foods or chop through bones unless the knife is made for that job.

Q: Why do I feel guilty when I say no?
A: If saying no makes you feel guilty, you’re not alone. Many people learned early on to keep the peace, avoid disappointing others, or put other people’s needs ahead of their own. As a result, saying no can feel uncomfortable, even when it’s the healthiest choice.
The truth is that guilt does not always mean you’re doing something wrong. JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL BAD DOESN’T MEAN YOU ARE BAD. Sometimes it simply means you’re doing something different. Setting boundaries can feel unfamiliar at first, but healthy relationships make room for both your needs and the needs of others.
Therapy can help you understand where that guilt comes from and build confidence in setting boundaries without feeling selfish.

For more than 50 years, Ambrosia has done exactly that, building a remarkable catalog of music that continues to resonate with generations of listeners. From the moment you step inside Ysidora Restaurant and Lounge, located inside the Inn at the Mission, you are immersed in elegance, warmth and effortless sophistication. The Spanishinspired menu strikes a perfect balance between traditional flavors and modern presentation. Every dish feels thoughtfully curated, from seasonal cheeses and cured meats to beautifully presented entrées and desserts. Ysidora’s ambiance features moody lighting, attentive service and just enough energy to feel lively without overwhelming conversation. What truly elevates the experience is the attention to detail, from polished service to spot-on pairing and menu recommendations. This is the kind of place where dinner easily turns into a three-hour experience because nobody wants to leave.
For starters, I recommend the mango-lime ceviche with delicate white fish, cucumber, avocado and red onion, or the Buffalo Chicken Empanadas with cilantro ranch drizzle. The "Three Sisters and a Fish" stars Chilean sea bass with roasted corn and black bean relish, squash blossom sauce and blistered tomatoes; this flavorful dish simply melts in your mouth. The San Juan Chicken takes comfort food to a new level with roasted corn, herbed ricotta, green beans and mashed potatoes in a lemon cream beurre blanc sauce. Another savory option is the pistachio-crusted lamb rack served with purple cauliflower, roasted carrots and beluga lentils. Craft cocktails are equally impressive, from the Prickly Pear Negroni with pear and orange blossom gin to the Citrus Coast featuring Aperol, Sauvignon Blanc, pamplemousse and lemon. The La Frambuesa blends Golden Eagle vodka with lime, raspberry and lavender flavors. Other beverage options include Spanish wines and a wide selection of draft beers. Desserts vary by season and include favorites such as apple cinnamon churros, vegan chocolate cake and seasonal gelatos and sorbets.
Ysidora is open daily for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., dinner from 5 to 10 p.m., and Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. Breakfast is offered on weekends from 8 to 11 a.m. Ysidora delivers luxury and comfort in a single experience, inviting guests to savor authentic Spanish flavors in an elegant yet relaxed setting.
