I heard a story recently that people are keeping their fake Christmas trees up all year long and simply changing the decorations to match a theme or season. I’m kinda intrigued by this option since it’s now January 22 and I have two decorated Christmas trees still standing in my own home. This is not typical for me, as I’m usually breaking down all my holiday decor while watching bowl games on New Year’s Day. Apparently I’ve been busy or lazy. I’m claiming the former, but I’m determined the trees are being stored away this weekend.
My daughter and I have been purging the doll and toy collection she’s had since she was a little girl. It feels amazing to clear out and organize her playroom, transforming it into the ultimate teenager hangout. Saying goodbye to her Barbie and American Girl dolls sadly closes another chapter on our life.

For more than twenty years, Triton Air has been South Orange County’s most trusted name in heating and air conditioning. Today, that legacy continues under a broader name, Triton Air & Plumbing, reflecting the company’s recent expansion into plumbing services.
You may recognize their signature blue vans or Triton’s Adopt-a-Highway sign on the northbound 5 Freeway, but “service” has always gone beyond mere repairs and installations. General Manager Luis Montiel, now in his 13th year with the company, says giving back remains central to their mission. “We’ve always believed that giving back to the community is just as important as serving our customers’ homes,” he says. “And we want to thank the community for trusting us as we grow.”
And they certainly have grown, all while staying true to their customer-first roots. Luis says that in 2026, they will focus on growing their customer service team so more customers can speak with friendly, knowledgeable team members to schedule their services.
BY VICTORIA KERTZ
In the past year, Triton’s customer base grew higher than they had originally forecasted. They added four in-house plumbers (for a total of six), and Luis says they’re on track to complete as many plumbing projects as HVAC, or even more! Customers had long been requesting more home repair services, and plumbing was the most requested service. “Our mission has always been to positively impact people’s lives,” Luis explains. “By caring for both the air we breathe and the water we use, we’re creating healthier, more efficient homes across our community.” Whether it’s a simple garbage disposal replacement or a major slab leak, they deliver the same quality and reliability customers have come to expect.
Service and sustainability continue to guide Triton’s approach to heating and air. Luis says that California is phasing out older, high–global warming refrigerants, and encourages homeowners to use more environmentally friendly refrigerants (such as R-454B and R-32).
While homeowners are not required to replace a working system, Triton says customers with air conditioners over 10 years old should upgrade to benefit from new refrigerant technology and higher efficiency standards. “It’s better for your house AND the environment,” Luis says.
On the community front, Triton’s dedication to South Orange County is stronger than ever. The team continues to support local initiatives, including San Clemente High School athletics, and has set a goal to sponsor at least 50% of the schools in its service area. From banners at baseball fields to indoor signage and other sponsorships, Triton wants families to know they support kids’ sports. Triton will also once again sponsor OceanFest, the weeklong surfing competition called The Greatest Show on Surf, this coming July.
And lastly, those who have worked with Triton before know that they participate in HVAC brand Lennox’s Feel the Love program, which donates air conditioning or other home systems to deserving members of the community. Last year, Triton’s nominee, OC resident Darin Nakakihara won and was gifted a Lennox cooling system installed by Triton’s generous team. Darin, who suffers from ALS and shares his journey on social media, posted a video of the occasion, which was viewed by thousands of people around the world.
Triton remains focused on one simple goal: being there for the community in more ways than one. With over 3,000 verified reviews and a 5.0-star rating, Triton is the highest-reviewed home service provider in the region. So, if you want to support their local charitable work and get the best service, the easiest way is to become their customer!

Richard & R.J. Osborne
Is your home ready for a whole new look? Kickoff your home improvement plans with a visit to Designer’s Magic Flooring, where they have everything you need to get a project going, plus an experienced team of 30 installers for each step of the process. Don’t let the name fool you, Designer’s showrooms offer more than just floor coverings. They have an impressive selection of flooring and countertops to transform your home.
Designer’s Magic Flooring has been familyowned for over 40 years. In 2007, Richard Osborne took it over and his sons, San Clemente grads R.J. and Kevin, recently joined the team. Their San Clemente location next to Trader Joe’s is a longtime favorite of South County families and a go-to for contractors and interior designers who need the highest quality materials in town.
The business has grown so much that they recently opened a second store in Aliso
Viejo and moved the warehouse to a larger facility in Lake Forest, where they plan to open a third showroom soon. Designer’s reputation for the best service and craftsmanship is known all over Orange County, so when demand for home improvements skyrocketed during the pandemic, Designer’s added three more people to their showroom staff. They proudly employ military veterans and some members of the installation crew have been there for over 10 years.
Curious about the latest trends and innovations, like luxury vinyl planks? This ultradurable, easy to clean flooring style adds a fresh new look to any room, but don’t look for it at a big chain store. Designer’s has over 1,000 samples and a knowledgeable staff to help you choose the right one.
For projects large and small, this family-owned, one-stop shop has everything you need to upgrade your home.

SUN TAMERS
Frank Torriero
In Orange County’s sun-soaked climate, Sun Tamers Window Tinting has become a trusted name for protecting vehicles, homes and commercial spaces from heat and harmful UV exposure. Founded in 1988, the familyowned company has spent more than 35 years serving the region, with a strong footprint in Laguna Niguel and surrounding communities such as Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and Ladera Ranch. Operating out of its Laguna Niguel location on Camino Capistrano, Sun Tamers delivers high-quality window tinting solutions across automotive, residential and commercial applications.
Established by Frank Torriero III, Sun Tamers is built on a foundation of experience, precision and customer care. Their skilled technicians are known for their professionalism and attention to detail, handling everything from standard tint installations to specialized film applications. Automotive window tinting remains a core service, offering heat reduction of up to 70 percent and blocking 99 percent of harmful UV rays. The result is improved comfort, interior protection and enhanced privacy for drivers and passengers alike.
Residential window tinting provides homeowners with similar benefits. By reducing glare and limiting heat transfer, window film helps lower energy costs while protecting furnishings and flooring from sun damage. Commercial clients rely on Sun Tamers to create more comfortable work environments, reduce glare on screens and safeguard valuable assets.
One of the company’s most notable projects highlights its expertise and trustworthiness. When historic Mission San Juan Capistrano faced ongoing damage to its artifacts from UV exposure, Sun Tamers was selected to install specialized ultraviolet window film across multiple buildings. The solution reduced heat and controlled light levels, helping preserve one of Orange County’s most cherished landmarks.
Client reviews consistently reflect satisfaction with both service and results. With hundreds of positive reviews on platforms such as Yelp and Angi, customers frequently cite clear communication, efficient installation and noticeable temperature improvements.
Fully licensed, bonded and insured, Sun Tamers backs its work with strong warranties and also offers vinyl graphics, vehicle wraps and window coverings. For those looking to protect interiors while improving comfort and appearance, Sun Tamers Window Tinting continues to deliver solutions that stand up to the Southern California sun.

This engagement with the community reflects Socal Tankless’s commitment to fostering a positive impact beyond its plumbing services.
ECO-FRIENDLY OPTIONS
Tankless water heaters offer several eco-friendly benefits that make them a popular choice for homeowners looking to reduce their carbon footprint. First, tankless water heaters only heat water when it’s needed, which means they consume less energy overall compared to traditional water heaters that constantly heat a large tank of water. This energyefficient design can lead to significant savings on your energy bills and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, tankless water heaters typically have a longer lifespan than traditional water heaters, which reduces the need for frequent replacements and ultimately decreases waste. Overall, the eco-friendly benefits of tankless water heaters make them a smart choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.
Socal Tankless is not merely a plumbing service provider but a cornerstone of the community, combining decades of expertise with a genuine passion for service and community support.
CAPISTRANO HARDWOODS
Dave Smith
When longtime carpenter Dave Smith set out to open his own supply house, he knew exactly what was missing in South County — a trusted source for quality lumber and specialty hardwoods. In 1989, he found the right home in San Juan Capistrano, saving local tradespeople and homeowners from long drives north to find custom moldings and hard-to-source materials. Capistrano Hardwoods opened its doors on Avenida Aeropuerto and has been serving the community ever since.
Today, Capistrano Hardwoods continues to be a go-to resource for homeowners, DIYers and professional tradespeople alike. The locally owned business is known for competitive pricing that often beats big box home improvement stores on moldings, windows and doors, paired with knowledgeable, hands-on customer service.
“I’m proud of the reputation we’ve built over the past 37 years,” Dave says.
“Our employees truly care about helping customers find the right solution, and the loyalty of our customers says everything.”
Open six days a week, Capistrano Hardwoods is especially convenient for weekend DIY projects. The experienced team takes the time to answer questions and guide customers through options, helping ensure each project starts on the right foot.
Well known as “just down the street from The Coach House,” Capistrano Hardwoods is easy to find and even easier to work with. The expansive inventory includes hardwood lumber, moldings, custom windows, barnwood doors, cabinet hardware and a wide selection of staircase and banister options.
Rather than navigating crowded aisles or driving up the freeway, customers can stop in and work directly with Ken, Zack,
Izzy and the rest of the team. From small home updates to large-scale projects, Capistrano Hardwoods delivers quality materials, expert guidance and a level of service that keeps customers coming back.
SEA POINTE DESIGN & REMODEL
Lauren Mills, President
Sea Pointe Design & Remodel is a distinguished family-owned home remodeling firm that was founded by Andrew Shore in 1986. Today, the organization continues its legacy within the family under the leadership of President, Lauren Mills. Over the past 40 years, this generational transition has maintained a steadfast commitment to high-quality home transformations across Orange County.
As a specialized design-build firm, Sea Pointe employs a unique “all-inclusive” remodeling philosophy that prioritizes financial transparency. Unlike traditional contractors who often provide estimates before finalizing designs, frequently leading to a 30% change order rate, Sea Pointe completes the design and material selection process before providing
a quote. This rigorous pre-construction planning ensures transparent costs, eliminating the unexpected expenses typically associated with general contractors.
The firm provides a single point of accountability and responsibility by maintaining an expert in-house team that includes designers, an architect, estimators, project managers, and skilled craftsmen. This allows the team to uphold a standard of service where the client’s home is respected as if it were their own.
Cleanliness and site management are hallmarks of the Sea Pointe experience, frequently earning the firm accolades from satisfied homeowners. This attention to detail ensures that the disruption to a family’s daily life is kept to an absolute minimum.
Confidence in their craftsmanship is reflected in a warranty program that significantly exceeds state requirements.
While California law only mandates a one-year warranty, Sea Pointe provides a robust five-year warranty on their work. Among accolades of the Better Business Bureau Ethics Award, Best of Orange County, and Best of Houzz, this dedication to excellence is further validated by over 300 positive online reviews, cementing their reputation as a premier and trusted remodeler for four decades. CALIFORNIA WINDOW
Dallas Conkle
In an industry often driven by shortcuts and subcontracted labor, California Windows stands as a rare constant. A company defined by legacy, craftsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. Founded in 1974, the business has grown not by chasing trends, but by honoring principles passed down through generations.
Today, California Windows is led by its newest owner and CEO, a man whose connection to the company quite literally began on day one. When asked how long he has been with the company, his answer “40 years” often draws a pause. The follow-up question comes naturally: How old are you? His response never fails to surprise. He is 40 years old. As the story goes, his father picked him up from the hospital in the company’s glass truck. From that moment on, California Windows wasn’t just a family business, it was part of his life.
Raised alongside the company, he rode shotgun with his father, learning not just how windows are installed, but how trust is built. The values instilled by his father and before him, his grandfather, still define the company today: pride in craftsmanship, respect for people, and responsibility to the community.
What truly sets California Windows apart is its commitment to employing in-house installers rather than subcontracting. This model isn’t just good business, it’s a reflection of their belief that when employees are valued, trained, and supported, excellence follows. That care trickles down into every installation, every home, and every customer experience.
Year after year, glowing reviews and referrals affirm what the company has always known: quality work begins with happy, skilled professionals who take
Dallas Conkle walking a client through the details, because at California Windows details MATTER!
pride in what they do. For clients, that means peace of mind and results that last.
Forty years after that first ride in the glass truck, California Windows continues to prove that legacy, when paired with integrity and leadership, doesn’t just endure, it thrives.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVES
Laura the Lighting Lady
Outdoor lighting now plays a central role in how homeowners design and use their backyards. With the right lighting plan, patios, outdoor kitchens and garden spaces remain practical and inviting long after daylight fades. Beyond simple visibility, well-designed lighting adds atmosphere, enhances safety and helps outdoor areas feel like a natural continuation of the home.
Orange County–based outdoor lighting designer and licensed C7 low-voltage electrician Laura Bradburn approaches each project with the belief that lighting sets the tone for how a space functions after dark. Collaborating with builders and landscape designers, she creates lighting plans that allow homeowners to enjoy their outdoor spaces with confidence and comfort in the evening hours.
Bradburn evaluates every project through three key priorities: safety, usability and visual appeal. Proper illumination of walkways, steps and pool areas helps reduce
hazards, while perimeter lighting contributes to a greater sense of security. Task lighting ensures outdoor kitchens, dining areas and gathering spaces remain functional at night. Thoughtful accent lighting completes the picture, highlighting landscaping and architectural features so the yard looks just as appealing from inside the home as it does outdoors.
Homeowners are also rethinking how lighting supports the way they entertain and relax. Bistro-style lighting adds warmth to seating areas, while specialized lighting allows recreational spaces to be used well into the evening. Permanent roofline lighting has also grown in popularity, offering customizable color options for holidays and special occasions.
In her designs, Bradburn prioritizes longlasting materials, often selecting brass fixtures with lifetime warranties. She relies on layered lighting techniques and warm color temperatures to avoid harsh glare and create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.
Whether enhancing everyday enjoyment, increasing property value or improving rental appeal, a carefully planned lighting design can turn a backyard into a true living space that works just as well at night as it does during the day.
GENTLE GENIE RUG CARE
Eric Bollmann
Gentle Genie Rug Care offers your area rugs the most thorough cleaning they’ve ever received—a process they proudly call restorative deep cleaning. Whether your rug is a cherished heirloom, a high-end designer piece, or a functional part of your home, Gentle Genie ensures it gets the care and attention it deserves.
The process begins with a meticulous rug dusting, designed to extract dry soil, gritty sand, and embedded particles from deep within the fibers and foundation of your rug. This essential first step not only protects your rug from premature wear but also prepares it for a deep and effective cleaning. Once dusting is complete, your rug moves to the wash floor for a mild yet thorough shampooing of both the front and back. During this stage, Gentle Genie also applies any necessary stain or odor treatments, ensuring your rug is fully refreshed.
The magic continues as Gentle Genie’s stateof-the-art river of water flushes and rinses
fresh water through your rug until it runs completely clean. This process removes all remaining dirt and residue, leaving your rug as fresh as the day it was made. A final conditioning rinse enhances the softness and vibrancy of your rug’s fibers, followed by water extraction and placement in a high-powered centrifuge to remove excess moisture. The finishing steps include careful drying and grooming to ensure your rug is returned looking its absolute best.
Pricing for this comprehensive cleaning is $5.50 per square foot, with optional pick-up and delivery services available at $75 each way. Gentle Genie provides convenience and peace of mind, especially for large or delicate rugs.

HOW TO HIRE A CONTRACTOR
When hiring a contractor, the first step is verifying basic credentials, including a valid CSLB license, insurance coverage and references. However, credentials alone do not tell the full story. It is equally important to determine whether a contractor is a skilled craftsman or simply meeting minimum industry standards.
Many contractors follow what are considered “baseline” construction techniques. While this meets industry norms, it does not always reflect high-quality workmanship. In fact, there are known flaws in standard construction practices nationwide. A true craftsman goes beyond minimum requirements, applying advanced techniques, problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of the trade.
COMMON RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
Consumers should be cautious of contractors who:
1. Do not carry a valid license or workers’ compensation insurance.
2. Advertise services outside the scope of their licensed trade.
3. Use false or misleading online reviews.
4. Make exaggerated or inaccurate claims about years in business.
5. Promote “combined years of experience,” which is often misleading and irrelevant.
6. Emphasize years of experience without demonstrating quality craftsmanship or proper techniques.
Experience alone does not guarantee skill. If a contractor has spent years using poor methods or lacks a strong understanding of their trade, the number of years in business holds little value.

CONSUMER TIPS
Consumer Tip 1:
Avoid hiring contractors without a verifiable business presence. Always confirm:
• A valid contractor’s license
• Workers’ compensation insurance
• A physical business address
• A legitimate company name
• Verifiable reviews and references
Consumer Tip 2:
Confirm workers’ compensation coverage. Construction involves heavy lifting, ladders and dangerous tools, making injuries common. Without proper coverage, liability can extend to the property owner in the event of an injury or fraudulent claim.
Consumer Tip 3:
Lower license numbers always indicate longer-established businesses. Consumers are encouraged to verify license details directly through cslb.ca.gov.
Consumer Tip 4:
Be cautious of online listings. Contractor fraud is prevalent on review platforms and social media, with an estimated 25 to 40 percent of profiles representing improperly licensed individuals or companies operating illegally.

REYNOLDS TERMITE CONTROL
Mike Reynolds
Reynolds Termite Control in San Clemente is your best line of defense against termites and all types of wood destroying pests. Since 1978, Mike Reynolds, along with the help of his father Bill Reynolds, have provided homeowners in South Orange County with quality and effective termite control services. After his father retired in 1991, Mike and his dedicated and helpful employees have continued serving this industry. Mike was born and raised in San Clemente and is a class of 1980 Triton graduate.
In most buildings, the best defense against termites and wood destroying insects is a great offense. One of Reynolds Termite Control’s best plans is the Yearly Control Service Policy. This option provides owners with a comprehensive annual inspection and local treatment of visible and accessible termite evidence at no additional cost… any time of the year.
Reynolds Termite Control offers very competitive rates for local treatments, whole house fumigations, dry rot and all types of wood repairs for residential, commercial and homeowners associations.
“Your home is an investment; protect it,” says Mike Reynolds. “Quality termite control starts with the best inspection and we are just the company to do it.” Orange County’s climate takes its toll on wood framed structures, from the moist, salty air along the coast to hotter and cooler conditions found inland. These weather fluctuations provide an environment for termites, fungus and dry rot to spread throughout your structure. Property owners are often unaware they have a problem until Reynolds Termite Control completes an expert inspection. If you are unsure when your property had its last inspection or treatment, it’s time to contact Reynolds Termite Control
for a whole house or limited inspection at 949.498.3500. Throughout the month of February, Reynolds Termite Control is offering a 5% discount on all localized termite treatments, whole house fumigations and woodwork.

LANTERN BAY INTERIORS & FLOORING
Gene DeCollibus
For over four decades, Gene DeCollibus has been synonymous with exquisite flooring craftsmanship. With a rich history in Dana Point, Gene made a strategic move in 2022, relocating Lantern Bay Interiors and Flooring to the bustling Capistrano Business Center off Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano. Despite the slight adjustment in distance from his cherished ocean view, Gene is reveling in the charm of his new showroom and warehouse. He enthusiastically notes that this move has afforded him his shortest commute to work ever, a considerable advantage.
Originally hailing from Buffalo, New York, Gene ventured westward, finding a home in Dana Point in the early 1980s. Eager to work closer to his growing family, he inaugurated Lantern Bay Carpets & Flooring on PCH near Blue Lantern in 1984. As a devoted father raising four children and now relishing in the joys of six grandchildren, Gene's familial pride is evident through the countless photos he readily shares.
Gene's energy and amiable demeanor leave a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to meet him. While a subtle echo of his east coast roots lingers in his voice, Gene has seamlessly embraced the laid-back vibe of California. In an industry where many peers might be contemplating exit strategies, Gene, with his recent move, appears revitalized. Alongside his dedicated employee Susan, Lantern Bay thrives in its new location.
Expressing gratitude to the community that has contributed to Lantern Bay's success, Gene emphasizes, "My customers make it a pleasure to do business here. I owe them tremendous thanks." Reflecting the company's ethos, Gene shares his motto: "Lantern Bay Interiors and Flooring — Where Quality and Service Comes First."
Lantern Bay offers a diverse selection of wood, vinyl, carpet, and area rugs to cater to various flooring preferences. Additionally, they provide window coverings to add the
perfect finishing touch to your spaces. Whether you seek high-end luxury or budget-friendly options, Lantern Bay has something for everyone. With personalized service, a knowledgeable staff, and professional installers committed to timely project completion, a visit to Gene's Lantern Bay promises a fulfilling experience for all your flooring needs.
Q: It’s hard for me to connect with others. How do I feel safe connecting with people?
A: You’re not alone. When connection feels hard, it’s often because a part of you is trying to protect you based on past experiences where closeness didn’t feel safe or predictable.
Feeling safe with others doesn’t mean forcing yourself to open up or pushing past your comfort zone. It means going slow and paying attention to what feels manageable. Connection can begin in small ways, like a genuine conversation or simply feeling accepted as you are.
Therapy can help you understand the parts of you that pull back, build trust with yourself, and learn how to connect at your own pace.

RESTORING RESTFUL SLEEP AND QUALITY OF LIFE
Comprehensive Diagnosis and Personalized Care
With nearly one-third of life spent asleep, the quality of those hours plays a vital role in overall health and daily functioning. Yet for many people, sleep is disrupted by undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders that can significantly affect concentration, productivity and long-term wellness. At Paloma Medical Group’s Sleep Medicine practices in Laguna Hills and San Juan Capistrano, physicians focus on identifying and treating sleep disorders to help patients reclaim restorative sleep and improve their quality of life.
There are close to 90 internationally recognized sleep disorders, ranging from common conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia to more complex disorders including narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and circadian rhythm disruptions. When left untreated, these conditions can lead to profound daytime impairment and, in some cases, serious health complications. Paloma Medical Group provides comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and ongoing follow-up care designed to restore healthy sleep patterns and support long-term well-being.
Accurate diagnosis is a critical first step. Paloma Medical Group physicians take time to evaluate symptoms, medical history and sleep habits before recommending appropriate testing. Diagnostic services may include overnight in-lab sleep studies, home sleep testing, multiple sleep latency testing and maintenance of wakefulness testing. These tools help identify issues such as sleep apnea, restless sleep, parasomnias, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders related to shift work or travel.
The sleep medicine team works collaboratively with specialists in otolaryngology, oral surgery and dental sleep medicine to develop individualized treatment plans. Patients also benefit from on-site sleep disorder testing and a dedicated CPAP clinic focused on comfort, education and compliance for those requiring continuous positive airway pressure therapy.
Research continues to show strong links between sleep disorders and conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression and acid reflux. By diagnosing and treating sleep disorders, Paloma Medical Group helps patients reduce daytime fatigue, improve daily performance and support overall health through better sleep.
