Lancaster County is many things. Of course, it’s the home of the Amish, a place where you can see horse-drawn buggies rolling through bucolic farmland. But the county also contains a bustling city, with quirky shops, galleries, nightclubs and nationally renowned restaurants. Lancaster was once known as the “Munich of America” and has recently seen that brewing heritage revived in the thriving craft beer scene. And shoppers have plenty to do here, whether they’re interested in outlet malls or antiques dealers. For families or foodies, art lovers or history buffs, shoppers or live music fans, Lancaster County is a great place to visit.

Favorite Bakeries By Sally Reynolds and Christine Vernon

Lancaster Cupcake 24 W. Orange St., Lancaster | 260 Granite Run Dr., Lancaster lancastercupcake.com

Lancaster Cupcake is a must stop each time I'm in the city. Their everchanging menu of creative cupcake flavors is a treat my family looks forward to, but their gluten free vegan cupcakes make me smile each time I walk in. Having celiac disease and a dairy intolerance leaves few options for sweet treats which makes Lancaster Cupcake a rare find, and their gluten free vegan flavors are just as special. I can safely enjoy a cupcake alongside my family—a rare treat.

Vécu 26 E. King St, Lancaster 26eastlancaster.com/vecu

In my humble opinion, this is Lancaster County’s #1 destination for pastries. The array is just glorious and includes standards like eclairs, chocolate croissants, and macarons. Vécu offers many other French specialties like breads, pâte de fruits, jams, juices, truffles, excellent coffees. Holidays, especially Easter and Christmas, bring incredible chocolates, like a six-inch tall chocolate egg with jellybeans inside. And each season brings pastries featuring local fruit: apple tarts, pear tarts, raspberry millefeuille, and strawberry cream cakes. For savory items, there are spinach and feta croissants, quiches, pâté, baguette sandwiches, and salads to go.

Lancaster Central Market 23 N. Market St, Lancaster Centralmarketlancaster.com

Market is a great place to browse for a variety of sweet treats. Zig’s Bakery offers traditional items such as cupcakes, scones, coffee cakes, whoopie pies, rice pudding, and seasonal pies. Lancaster Pie and Coffee makes regular pies and hand pies with local fruits such as blueberries and sour cherries. They also have a luscious bourbon pecan pie. Keep your eye out for their savory quiches and chicken pies as well. Get your donut and long john fix at Marley’s Country Store and Shady Maple. And if you’re gluten free, don’t miss Amaranth Bakery’s breads and tasty little thumbprint cookies. Safe & Sweet also has gluten-free baked goods, plus sugarfree and dairy-free options. Moore Desserts has beautifully decorated cupcakes and a broad range of flavors.

Live Jazz

IN LANCASTER CITY

BY KRISTA LOCKWOOD As fall evenings get cooler and the days grow shorter, playful outdoor activities transition to cozy, intimate nights out on the town. A crisp autumn evening is the perfect excuse to get a little dressed up, grab a cocktail and enjoy live jazz in the city. Lancaster has several places to catch jazz throughout the week, but these three standout spots each offer a distinct atmosphere for an elevated evening out.

12 VISIT LANCASTER

WINTER/HOLIDAY 2026

THE BELVEDERE INN The Belvedere Inn is an award-winning restaurant and has been a Lancaster city staple since 1998. Set inside a moody city mansion, its intimate atmosphere makes it the ideal setting for a romantic date or a leisurely dinner with friends. Upstairs in Crazy Shirley’s Lounge, The Belvedere hosts live jazz every week on Friday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m. Have a seat at the piano bar with a glass of wine or an espresso martini and soak up the music over lively chatter while enjoying an elegant dinner. The menu features creative dishes made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients, offering plenty to enjoy while you listen. A rotating lineup of musicians brings a different sound each week, from jazz vocals to instrumental sets on piano, saxophone, bass and guitar. Find the latest jazz night schedule under “Entertainment” at BelvedereLancaster.com. Reservations are encouraged, as their space fills up quickly. 402 N. Queen St., Lancaster | Fri. & Sat. 6–9 p.m Reservations: Recommended BelvedereLancaster.com

PROOF If you aren’t looking too hard, you just might miss this gem. A wooden stairwell on the first block of Queen Street leads you down to this polished underground cocktail bar and restaurant. Light stone walls, compact booths and a sleek bar make this space feel warm, comfortable and inviting. On the first Friday of the month, you can enjoy the sounds of The Carl Zeplin & Tim Gross Jazz Duo on guitar and saxophone from 6-9 p.m. Proof is an ideal spot for creative cocktails and a few shareable plates. Their uniquely sourced and expertly curated wine and spirits list offers plenty to sip on while settling in for an evening of live jazz. First Friday is a very popular night for this trendy urban cellar, so a reservation is recommended. Stay up to date on Proof ’s latest live music and events at prooflancaster.com/events. HORSE INN Tucked away on the top floor of a 19th century horse stable, Horse Inn offers live jazz twice a week. Once a Prohibition-era speakeasy, Horse Inn is now recognized as Lancaster’s oldest continuously running restaurant and bar. Horse Inn still carries a speakeasy atmosphere, with its lived-in and old-world charm. The horse-stall booths, wagon-wheel chandeliers and wagon-hub bar stools throughout the dining room were moved from the first-floor stable to the second-floor speakeasy by the original owners. The rustic charm doesn’t take away from the liveliness of this space. Every Tuesday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m., the Tom Pontz Trio fills the bar with jazz, featuring piano, stand-up bass and drums. Grab a casual bite and a cocktail while you listen. Their menu changes daily based on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and their once locally famous tenderloin tips on toast are still on the menu. Reservations are recommended. Most nearby street parking is reserved for permit holders, but additional parking is available on the 600 block of East Fulton Street. Each offering its own unique atmosphere, these three Lancaster spots make the perfect backdrop for a cozy, autumn night of live jazz. 540 E. Fulton St., Lancaster Tues. & Fri. 6–9 p.m. | Reservations: Recommended horseinnlancaster.com

Holiday Thrifting IN LANCASTER COUNTY

BY KAYLA CORBIN Skip the big corporate chains for holiday décor this year and save money by thrifting around Lancaster. I went to a few thrift shops around the county with only the goal being to create a cute centerpiece display for the holidays.

26 VISIT LANCASTER

WINTER/HOLIDAY 2026

First Stop:

Third Stop:

342 N. Queen St., Lancaster

158 E. Main St., New Holland

My first stop was one of my favorite marketplaces to visit in downtown Lancaster. They have an array of vintage, recycled and handmade items for sale. It’s set up like a maker’s market. I didn’t have as much luck here as I anticipated because I went in the peak of fall season, but I still found a few items that would have worked well for the holidays. There were plenty of glass vases and jars that would have been very pretty, but the price wasn’t right for me.

Next on my list was Lucky Dog Thrift store. This place was a bit overwhelming at first because of all of the inventory stacked from floor to ceiling. But once I browsed a bit, I got used to the environment and locked in. I found a beautiful glass jug with a green handle that I knew I wanted to use. This jar ended up being the most expensive piece, coming in at $8. I also found a candle wreath that was brand new. Then I headed upstairs where I found an entire room dedicated to the holidays. I grabbed a piece of plaid fabric that I wanted to use on my wooden board and found a pair of Santa salt and pepper shakers that I ended up not using, but I’m still so glad I picked them up. I also found a few more floral stems that I knew would look good with the others I had already gotten.

Building Character

Second Stop:

Lancaster Creative Reuse 1766 Oregon Pike, Lancaster

I had never been here before and now I can’t wait to go back! This thrift store is a DIYer’s dream. They have everything from jewelry making to specialty paper, yarn to flower stems and craft kits to home décor items—and it is very affordable. I found a lot of potential in this store. I did a few sweeps before deciding on anything. I ended up finding a wooden board, a few floral stems and a pack of pinecones. I was starting to see a vision.

WINTER/HOLIDAY 2026

Lucky Dog Thrift Store

Fourth Stop:

Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland 707 W. Main St., New Holland

Since I was already in New Holland, I drove down the road to the Re-Uzit shop. This is more focused on clothing (tons and tons of clothing) but I did find a dedicated holiday section on the ground floor. I got a poinsettia stem and a metal sled and decided I had enough to go home and put everything together. VISIT LANCASTER

Grand Total: $26.50

Overall, my display ended up costing around $27. It would look good as a centerpiece or on a shelf. I am really happy with how it turned out, especially since I had zero clue what I was going to come up with. Thrifting in Lancaster is so easy, and there are plenty of other stores I did get a chance to visit. If you’re feeling a little creative, challenge yourself to find items for your holiday display using a set amount of money. I promise it is so fulfilling in the end!
