In the premiere of Rooms of Time, commemorating the centenary of Lithuanian ballet, two choreographers meet – Krzysztof Pastor and Martynas Rimeikis, Teacher and Student, both of whom have shaped and are still shaping the face of Lithuanian ballet in their own way. M. Rimeikis’ path to choreography began in 2012, when K. Pastor, who was the director of the Lithuanian Ballet at the time, invited him to participate in the Creative Impulse project. That invitation became the first step that allowed him to test his voice in the language of dance. “A choreographer and ballet company director, in one way or another, must also be a teacher,” – says Krzysztof Pastor. The Master’s gaze reflects respect for the Student’s work: he is fascinated by Rimeikis’ courage, theatricality, and ability to refine and implement his ideas. And thus, as Lithuanian ballet enters its second century, embracing its accumulated experience, the weight of history, the flow of traditions, and simultaneously opening up to the future – to new rooms of time created by the choreographers of the present and tomorrow.

LT Šis spektaklis be konkretaus siužeto. Be to, šiais laikais pasaulį suvokiame vizualiai – iš nuotraukų, socialinių medijų, taigi gyvename gyvenimus, kurių iš tikrųjų nėra. Martynas Rimeikis, choreografas
This production does not have a particular storyline. It was born out of my reflection upon the fact that in this day and age we are experiencing the side effects of progress: information reaches us in a second, news flow without ceasing, everything happens at the speed of light. I loved the idea stated in an article by Norwegian scientist Thomas Hylland Eriksen: we are standing in place at an enormous speed. And this is exactly what I want to explore in ballet Days, Minutes – although I wish to speak not about the phenomenon itself, but about the inner state of a human being who is experiencing this effect. This is how the title of the production came to be: today our days turn into minutes – they’re all one and the same, filled with empty variety, fleeting in the blink of an eye. During the exploration of this subject I’m constantly remembering one metaphor: if one would direct a strong spurt of water into an empty water bottle, the latter would remain empty, because the violently flowing water would not make it inside and would instead splatter all around. The same applies to a human being: one doesn’t have time to react, feel and think, and in the end remains empty. Moreover, nowadays we are experiencing the world visually – through photographs, social media, and thus we are living lives that are not really there. Martynas Rimeikis, Choreographer

The Creative Impulse project, initiated in 2012 by Krzysztof Pastor as the LNOBT’s former Artistic Director of Ballet, turned into a stepping-stone for Rimeikis as a choreographer. It was here that he revealed himself as a talented choreographer and a sensitive director of choreographic miniatures. His debut production was Waiting for Godot, presented during the first Creative Impulse in 2012, and his Journey followed the next year. His other creations for this project also included Adagio for Strings (2014) and Alone (2016). Among his other early works are choreographies for the production of The Blooming of Tamarix after the play by Rimantas Šavelis at the Panevėžys Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre (directed by his father, Ramutis Rimeikis, in 2006) and feature film Invisible directed by Ignas Jonynas (premiered in 2019), as well as several contemporary dance choreographies for the students of the Ballet Department at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts, which have contributed significantly to the young dancers’ victories in international ballet competitions.
In 2014, his first miniature Waiting for Godot was presented at Internationale Tanzmesse NRW – one of the biggest dance events in the world. His one-acter Everywhere We Weren’t (set to the music by Max Richter) was produced the next year and included in a triple bill Bolero+ at the LNOBT, garnering him the first Golden Cross of the Stage award for best choreography. His first full-length ballet, Der Prozess after Franz Kafka, was mounted at the LNOBT in 2017, winning him and composer Mindaugas Urbaitis yet another set of Golden Crosses for best choreography and best music. Der Prozess was the first Lithuanian production to be broadcast on Mezzo TV. His third production for the LNOBT – a one-acter Days, Minutes to the music by Marija Paškevičiūtė – was presented in the spring 2019, not long before the premiere of his second full-length dance performance Eglė, Queen of the Grass Snakes based on Eduardas Balsys ballet at the Klaipėda State Music Theatre. Both productions garnered him the third Golden Cross of the Stage for best choreography. Eglė, Queen of the Grass Snakes was also subsequently broadcast
on Mezzo TV. Among his most recent creations are Blind Words for the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań (Poland), included in the triple bill BER (2020) together with the choreographies by Robert Bondara and Alexander Ekman, Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps for the LNOBT (2021), included in the double bill with the choreography by Krzysztof Pastor, and choreographies for two opera productions: Feliksas’ Bajoras opera-ballet The Lamb of God (2022), in which he also debuted as an opera director, and Verdi’s Aida (2023). In 2020, he has succeeded Pastor as the LNOBT’s Artistic Director of Ballet and since 2025 has been appointed Chief Choreographer.

I created Moving Rooms back in 2008, but this ballet has never been forgotten, and instead has been constantly performed by various companies – such as the Dutch, Polish and Czech national ballets. Thus, I wouldn’t say that I return to it after many years – rather, this work has stayed with me ever since the premiere. At the same time, of course, each new production is different, and it is always interesting to watch how different dancers interpret this work in their own way. Moving Rooms does not have a specific plot, but it is filled with emotions. Each viewer can create their own story, experience different feelings and interpret this ballet according to their individual perception, based on their unique experiences. I deliberately left the original English title in which this ballet was created for the Dutch National Ballet – the title embodies moving, changing spaces, both physically and emotionally. On stage, the change of spaces is defined by light. The latter shapes the relationships between the dancers, and helps to convey the emotions expressed by their bodies. The play of light and movement in a constantly changing space is the essence of this ballet. Sometimes it creates a sense of closeness and harmony, and sometimes – an air of anxiety and danger. I chose the music of Alfred Schnittke and Henryk Górecki because of the character, mystery, tension, dynamics and many other features of these composers' music. Music is an essential element of this ballet: its constantly changing atmosphere and rhythm inspire the dancers to move with extraordinary speed and precision, while at the same time giving them the freedom to seek their own interpretation. Even though the choreography is filled with inspirations and symbols, it does not directly illustrate anything. It is rather a play of moods and emotions in a dynamic composition of light. I leave the audience complete freedom to experience and interpret this work as they please. May everyone leave the performance with their own impressions and a story they have experienced in their own way. And if I could wish for anything, it would be that everyone would feel like they have experienced something special and, at least for a short while, would be transported to another world created out of movement, light, the human body, and dance.
