This guide is designed to assist the media with their coverage of Lincoln Memorial University basketball. It is published primarily as a source of information for reporters representing newspapers, television and radio stations, wire services and magazines. If you need information that you cannot find in this guide, please contact the Sports Information Office at (423) 869-6236. We are always ready to serve you.

MEDIA/PHOTOGRAPHER CREDENTIALS

Requests for media credentials should be made at least one week in advance. Media are requested to park at the lower Arena entrance and display some form of identification on the vehicle to avoid being ticketed. There is limited space on the floor press row that is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional space is available next to the stat table, if needed. Photography is permitted on the courtside wherever it is allowed by NCAA rules.

STATISTICAL SERVICES

Statistics are provided using the STAT CREW program. Monitors will be placed along press row to provide immediate access to statistics. Hard copies of halftime stats, final stats and play-by-play will be provided following each half.

RADIO BROADCASTS

Requests to broadcast must be made as soon as possible to the Sports Information Office at (423) 869-6236. A phone line is provided for the visiting team’s radio. Space is available either on press row next to the visiting bench or

next to the stat table.

Practices are generally open to the public. Please contact the Sports Information Office if you wish to interview players or coaches. If you plan to cover a practice, call in advance for any changes in the schedule.

Interviews with Coach Stephanie Smith, players and other athletic personnel must be arranged through the Sports Information Office. Generally, the best times for interviews are before and after practice. After games, Coach Smith and players are available for interviews after a 10-minute cooling-off period. Please contact the SID before the game or a member of the stat crew during the game to arrange for any postgame interviews. Priority will be given to the LMU radio and then on a first-come, first-serve basis. If requested, efforts will be made to arrange postgame interviews with visiting coaches and players. Telephone interviews with Coach Smith and players are available on a “call-back” basis only and will be arranged at the most convenient time for the student-athletes and coaches.

2009-10 SEASON OUTLOOK After finishing 11-17 last season (5-11 in South Atlantic Conference play), Lincoln Memorial University head coach Stephanie Smith is looking to take the next step forward in her second season and move the Lady Railsplitters into the top echelon of the conference. With only four players returning, depth and experience were the key issues that Smith had to address while on the recruiting trail this summer. With those needs filled, Smith will fully implement her trademarked style of hard-nosed defense and up-tempo play. The experience of the returning players should help ease the transition somewhat. Leading the returnees is sophomore point guard Dayshalee Salaman (Carolina, Puerto Rico). Salaman, a member of the 2009 SAC All-Freshman team, led the squad in scoring and in assists. Senior Cena Nasiloski (Hammond, IN) led in rebounding. Junior Brittany Craney (Petersburg, IN) and sophomore Amberly O’Dell (Argos, IN) were usually the first two players to come off the bench last year. Two of the newcomers have played together for many years, Oklahoma City natives Whitney Holmes and LaChelle Hyatt were teammates in both high school and junior college. Holmes is a two-time NJCAA first-team All-American who averaged 21.5 points and nine rebounds a game while Hyatt averaged 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game over the last two seasons. Another pair of juco teammates are featured on the roster. Carolyn Mills (Nashville, TN) and Blandine Kikwiki Mamuku (Congo, Africa) helped lead Chipola College to a third place finish in the NJCAA national tournament. Mills averaged seven points and 3.5 rebounds a game at CC while Kikwiki Mamuku averaged nine points and 7 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Destiny Williams (Upper Marlboro, MD) was a first-team allconference performer at St. Petersburg College last season. She averaged 15.2 points, 6.1 assists and 2.3 steals a game and was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player. Mariah Richardson (Lawrenceville, GA) is the lone freshman on the squad. The 5’9” guard/forward averaged 17 points a game last season and helped lead her team to the Georgia Sweet 16. This year’s schedule will be one of the toughest since LMU joined the NCAA. In addition to the grueling South Atlantic Conference schedule, six of the ten nonconference games will be against regional competition. Ten of the seventeen teams on the schedule have played in the NCAA Tournament over the last three seasons and three of those have been conference champions over that same period.

Stephanie Smith enters her second year as head coach of Lincoln Memorial University looking to build upon last year’s efforts. Smith, a native of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, came to LMU from Daytona Beach College in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she has been head coach since 2004. Before taking over the helm at Daytona Beach College, Smith spent the 2003-04 season with Cowley County College in Kansas. Her duties at Cowley came after serving as head coach at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, from 1991 to 2003 where she led the Warriors to the Region XXIV and GRAC Championship with a 31- 2 record before earning 2003 Russell Athletic/ WBCA JC/CC National Coach of the Year. Some of Smith’s other accolades at Wabash include 12 20-win seasons, conference championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and a preseason ranking of 2nd in the nation. Smith got her start in women’s college basketball with St. Catharine Junior College in Springfield, Kentucky, in 1985 where she served as assistant after graduating from Sue Bennett Junior College that same year. Smith also holds a Bachelor of Science from Campbellsville College and a master’s degree from Oakland City University.

DAWN SKELCHER ASSISTANT COACH

PLAYING EXPERIENCE Lincoln Memorial University 2000-02 John A. Logan Junior College 1998-2000 Carterville (IL) High School 1994-98

Dawn Skelcher returns as the assistant coach for a seventh season, this time to help lead the LMU program to a new era. Prior to being named assistant coach, she spent two seasons as a Lady Railsplitter, averaging 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds a game. During her career, she was part of the 2000-01 squad that was named the WNCA Division II Team GAP National Champions and won the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division. Before coming to LMU she was a member of the John A. Logan (IL) women’s basketball team. While at Logan, Dawn started two years for the very successful John A. Logan squad. A native of Carterville, Ilinois, Dawn attended Carterville High where she earned several honors during her prep career, including All-Black Diamond Conference. A 2003 graduate of LMU, Dawn earned a degree in athletic training and brings that knowledge and experience to the sidelines in addition to her regular coaching duties. She has also introduced new conditioning techniques to the coaching staff’s repertoire, handled film exchange, and other coaching duties.

PLAYING EXPERIENCE Rider 2006-08

Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kelli Sawyer joins the Railsplitter women’s basketball coaching staff after graduating from Rider University in 2007 with a degree in sociology. As a high school athlete, Kelli became only the third player from Philadelphia to score over 2000 career points. She averaged 24 points a game as a senior. Kelli brings great enthusiasm and dedication to her position. She will be responsible for film exchange and assisting in the development of the perimeter players and recruiting. Kelli is currently pursuing a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision at Lincoln Memorial University.

JOSH WILLSON STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH

Josh Willson enters his first year at Lincoln Memorial University. He graduated from Bearden High School (Knoxville, Tennessee) in 2007 where he was manager for the women’s basketball team. After high school, Josh spent two years at Walters State Community College and received a associates degree in 2009. Josh was also the student manager for the Lady Senators basketball team. While working under Coach Dave Kragel at WSCC, Josh helped the team win two Region VII titles and COACHING EXPERIENCE earned appearances at the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Walters State Community College Kansas. This position gave him the desire to become a coach. 2007-2009 “Josh is excited to continue his education and earn a degree in Physical Education at LMU. The CONFERENCE SouTh ATlAnTic conference THE SOUTH ATLANTIC The South Atlantic Conference is in its 33nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

posed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University will become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; CarsonNewman in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC.

EARLY ERA

The LMU Athletes’ Hall of Fame was founded in 1981 and the first class of 46 was inducted during homecoming activities that year. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor those athletes that developed outstanding skills and represented LMU in a wholesome manner. TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and the weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and airconditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). The arena was named after former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds for it’s construction. Work on the multi-million dollar facility began on May 7, 1988, and on February 2, 1991, the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters held their first contests in the facility when they hosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a doubleheader. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69.

LADY RAILSPLITTER HOME COURTS Prior to 1924, LMU did not have a gym. Most home games were played in Middlesboro or at Powell Valley High School.

GLADYS T. BRADLEY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SUITE Completed in 1991, the LMU Lady Railsplitter locker room is one of the finest facilities of it’s type at the NCAA Division II level. Officially known as the Gladys T. Bradley Women’s Basketball Suite (named for the wife of former Lady Railsplitter coach C.W. Bradley), the suite encompasses the main dressing area, office space for the assistant coaches, storage areas and a foyer that can be utilized both for meetings and as a place to study. The dressing area contains individual cubicles for 15 players, a big-screen television, restrooms, showers and direct access to the LMU Athletic Training facilities located next door. The foyer is highlighted by a large bulletin board and several other displays with that highlight award-winners, individual and team records, banners for all LMU teams appearing in the NCAA Tournament and a prominent display highlighting LMU’s all-time win total, which currently stands at 724. Recent renovations to the area include new carpeting, new furniture for the foyer and offices, and changes to the dressing area that increased the locker space for each player.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 112th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2009 enrollment was 3,948 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
