2002 SEASON OUTLOOK LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY 2002 Volleyball Prospectus With a new season at hand, the Lady Railsplitters hope that physical strength and maturity will be the ingredients to reaching the Gulf South Conference Tournament in 2002. As well, an extremely tough non-conference schedule should also help to prepare the LMU women for battle with the GSC’s stiff league competition. Returning at setter this season for LMU will be junior Katie Holly (5’8” Cincinnati, OH). Holly led the Lady Splitter offense in 2001 with 10+ assists a game and .49 service aces. Being healthy could lead to a big year for Holly as well, as she will be pressed by Allison Holstein a 5’7” freshman from Brownsburg, Indiana. Holstein will be a solid back-up to Holly and will push for time as she has a great deal of experience from her past club teams. On the outside, there is a committee looking for their chance to shine. Ahleasha Matthews (5’8” Junior Kettering, Ohio) was the leading outside hitter with just under three kills per game last season and led the team in digs. Senior Jill Boehmer (5’9” Centerville, Ohio) was a constant on the right side last year for LMU. Jennifer Brannan (5’10” Sophomore Frankfort, Indiana), Courtney Marton (5’9” Freshman Springfield, Ohio), and Lisa Mulder (5’11” Sophomore Grand Rapids Michigan) look to make their mark as well. The middles have experience this season for the Lady Railsplitters; however speed could be the key to success. Melissa Stevens (5’11” Senior Monroe, Michigan) and Kellie Bass (6’0” Sophomore Clinton, Tennessee) saw major time in 2001 and will again this year. The duo will be looked upon for increased production as well. Sophomore Sara Klingenburg (6’2” Tehachapi, California) has shown vast improvement since her freshman season and has really worked hard in the off-season physically. She could see much more time in the middle this season as well. The new libero position will be a battle as Erin DeRouen (5’8” Sophomore Louisville, Illinois) played as a strong defensive specialist in 2001. She will be pushed by Allison Holstein for the spot this season. While the Lady Railsplitters have another trademark young team, through chemistry and hard work the 2002 Lady Railsplitter volleyball squad could be the most talented in several years. Only time will tell if they are able to put all the pieces together to have another successful year.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH: Mike Smith A 1992 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Lady Railsplitter Head Coach Mike Smith took over the helm of the LMU volleyball program in 1994. Since that time Smith’s teams have enjoyed a combined record of 159-108, while making three trips to the Gulf South Conference Tournament. While Head Coach of LMU, Smith has coached seven All-Gulf South Conference players, while also coaching two Academic All-Conference selections from the Lady Railsplitter program. Very proud of these individuals, Smith is equally proud of the high graduation rate seen by players leaving the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program. During the summer, Smith travels to various colleges and universities to work camps, helping to gain new ideas and build his coaching knowledge even further. In addition, he is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program while a student at Lincoln Memorial University. He received his Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training/Health in 1992 and his Masters Degree in Education in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Smith serves as the Athletic Business Manager for Lincoln Memorial University’s Turner Arena. He and his wife and daughter ..............................
GRADUATE ASSISTANT: Chris Parker After completing his Bachelor’s Degree from Harding University, Chris enters his second season atLincoln Memorial University as Graduate Assistant of the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program. During his stay at Harding University, Chris worked in the sports information department, as well as with the Lady Bison volleyball squad. “Chris brings great knowledge of the Gulf South Conference competition and success with him”, said LMU Head Coach Mike Smith. “He has also coached Junior Olympic volleyball before coming to the Lady Railsplitter program, and this will no doubt be of great benefit to him and to the LMU players as well.” A native of Tennessee, Parker is working towards his Masters of Business Administation in the LMU Graduate School. Chris has a very competitive nature and solid work ethic that has been a welcomed addition to the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 majors in four different schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing and Allied Health, and School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 1753 students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 34th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. The GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II, encompassing 18 universities in six southeastern states. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and golf. We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. GSC teams regularly reach the NCAA Championship Tournaments in every sport, frequently challenging for national titles. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Stacey Mickles and Office Manager Mary Jean Box. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert Brown, President of Arkansas Tech University. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Frank Franz (Alabama-Huntsville) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert McChesney (Montevallo). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
