I am salvadoran, by birth and blood -- like Pedro Geoffroy Rivas (1908 - 1979), author of “The Jaguar's Grandchildren”, poem to which I make reference with the present work. By using a confining frame in monochromatic images, the physical landscape that makes up these faces is isolated, accentuating both the singularity of the individual and the genetic legacy of our ancestors. Additionally, I tried to capture something beyond the surface -- that which was consciously or unconsciously communicated through expressions and facial gestures. García Márquez wrote: “Salvadorans drink both joyousness and bitterness from the same cup. They make music of their tears and laugh at their music . . . take jokes gravely yet shrug off serious matters.” I would like to think that there is something of what he says in theses portraits.
