Lori Craven Memorial Ball Tournament marks 25 years TAYLOR WEAVER ..................................
The 25th annual Lori Craven Memorial Ball Tournament brought 32 teams to Lloydminster to raise funds for families in need. Originally founded to assist children battling cancer, the tournament was established to honour the legacy of Lori Craven. After receiving the initial $5,100 raised in that first year — delivered as cash, checks and coins in a bucket — Craven passed the funds along to help other sick friends and local sports Lori Craven Memorial Tournament attendees soak in the emotional meaning behind the annual event on Aug. 16 at Driven teams. Since its inception, $2,000,000. “It started with children with cancer, but we realized that if we’re helping parents, we’re helping kids, too,” said committee member Donica Schneider. “It allows them to be together as a family while going through treatment, travelling, or dealing with medical expenses.” Participants grow hair year-round for the tournament’s final-day head shaving auction, which always brings in a ton of money. For local players, the tournament’s tight-knit atmosphere keeps them returning year after year. Clint Gomersall, who has played in the tournament for a decade across various teams, noted that existing teams rarely give up their tournament spots. “No one’s serious, no one’s angry,” Gomersall said. “You come out for the love of the game, to hang out, have fun and support your community. You see next generations coming in — guys I’ve played against for years now have 17-year-old kids out on the field. It’s just more family adding to the family that’s already here.” Organizers credited the longevity and success of the event to sustained backing from local businesses, volunteers and ball players.

Wowed by OLCN ’s wagon track Onion Lake Cree Nation (OLCN) hosted the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) finals last weekend and I can’t stop talking about it. I hadn’t been to OLCN for a while, but I went up for Championship Sunday race coverage. Having covered chuckwagon races in Lloydminster for years, I forgot how beautiful Onion Lake’s facility is. The bucking chutes are built into the wagon track infield like they are in Calgary and the covered grandstands provide an ideal view from any seat. Watching Colby Stanley win Sunday’s dash in front of a hometown crowd made the experience that much more special. They really love him up there! If a CPCA final at OLCN becomes the new norm, I say great. Everyone was very welcoming and in great spirits. Feedback from drivers on the location change has been stellar and the crowd seemed to be having a great time. See you all at the 2027 CPCA finals, wherever they end up.
