Planets and Angles
Before continuing into the celestial dance of the astrological cosmos, first greet the players that cross the skies and steer us by their rhythms and vibrations: the planets. In the world of astrology, each of the planets has a unique personality and takes a unique role, similar to actors in the play of life here on Earth. Get to know these characters, each with specific vibrations, that are assisting in shaping the script of your life and your unfolding. Understanding their impact will also help you speak to the weight of their action on your interpretation.
Of these players, first are the professors (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto), the master teachers of the cosmos who govern the deepest, most intense lessons of the soul. The professors establish the syllabus and the topics of your long-term development. No profound major life event occurs unless it’s on the syllabus of the professors. The professors move slowly but with intense power, triggering awakenings and soul-deep transformations that resonate for decades and generations.
Then, we are led by the tutors (Saturn and Jupiter), who assist us in unfolding in the ways the professors have prepared. The tutors aid in development—Saturn in structure, discipline, and mastery; Jupiter in expansion, opportunity, and optimism. They walk with us, supporting us to establish the wisdom, durability, and structure necessary to accommodate our higher life transitions.
And lastly, we dance with the messengers (the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars), the quickmoving lights that make an impact on our daily existence. The messengers spur us into action, assisting us in reacting to and actualizing what the tutors are teaching us. They quickly move through the chart, triggering thoughts, emotions, passion, and decisions. They frame the way that we communicate, live, and personify the lesson in the moment. Messengers do not bring in major life events that come from a professor.
Why Is This Important?
The planets are more than distant spheres of celestial reality; they are vectors of living energy and containers of human experience, change, and spiritual education. Every planet directs an integral aspect of life: communication, love, ambition, development, spirituality, and even the invisible terrain of the soul.
Knowing the character and the cadence of each of the planets enables you to decipher not only your own drive, talents, and shortcomings but also the unseen undercurrents influencing your relationships, your calling, and your personal development. More so, knowing the planets teaches you to speak to them and to assign living, breathing language to their energies. You become astrologically fluent!
When you can describe the way a planet feels, how a planet behaves, and how a planet moves in your life, you start to think astrologically, live astrologically, and speak astrologically. You don’t just want to know about astrology. You want to be able to use the words, to formulate the statements, the dialogue, the living interpretations that give a chart life.
That’s why we map the planets so meticulously. That’s why this is important. Every bit of knowledge you accumulate here is another word, another phrase, another voice you can use to communicate the language of the stars.
As you read through this chapter, you’ll get to know each of the professors, tutors, and messengers personally. You’ll see how each of the planets operates in the natal chart to bring out innate characteristics, talents, and areas of development. You’ll also be exposed to planetary transits, those active movements that function as cosmic messengers of change and introduce new lessons and opportunities into
your life at various periods in your life. Understanding the ways to read these movements empowers you to anticipate transitions, greet challenges with wisdom, and welcome your destiny with open arms.
How Can It Assist You?
Knowing the planets at both a fundamental and an in-depth energetic level is necessary to master astral fluency—particularly as you move into the study of aspects, in which the planets are communicating with each other. That basic knowledge will assist you in a variety of ways.
UnderstandingYour Birth Chart
Imagine that your natal chart is your cosmic fingerprint. It is a map of your personality, gifts, and potential in life. The better you know the planets and their functions (professor, tutor, or messenger) the more in-depth and precise you’ll read and speak the chart, unearthing buried strengths, shadow work, and sacred themes in life. Plus, you’ll be able to speak it confidently.
Travel in ClarityThrough Life
Planetary transits are the seasons of change in the life of your soul. They bring in dynamic periods of activity, creativity, change, and growth. An understanding of how the movement of the professors, tutors, and messengers influences you enables you to anticipate wisely ahead of time, in a conscious, deliberate manner, and align yourself with the current of divine timing.
Smoothing the Path to Personal Growth
Astrology reflects back to you the world inside of you. As you grasp planetary influences, you’re
able to work intentionally with your potentials, recognize your edges as you grow, and call in personal and spiritual growth. Planets become allies, sharing gifts as well as challenges to clarify the light of your soul.
Improving Relationships
Each planet influences different aspects of relationships, from how we communicate (Mercury) to how we love (Venus) to how we commit (Saturn). Understanding these influences creates space for deeper empathy, clearer communication, and more nourishing, conscious connections with others.
EmpoweringYour Interpretations and Your Voice
When you internalize the fundamental energies of the planets, you’ll start to see their dialogue in the heavens and be able to say them. When you work with the elements of aspects, you’ll be able to create complete astrological statements, weaving planetary energies into living, breathing meaning. Astrological competence does not merely involve reading the language of the cosmos, but in saying it beautifully, correctly, and with assurance.

The times for new starts and accepting our fate can be triggered by the transiting north node, while the times for release from past patterns and for moving on can be triggered by the transiting south node.
Retrograde Planets r
In astrology, when we talk about retrograde motion, it is the backward motion of a planet in its orbit when looked at from an Earth
perspective. It is an optical illusion created by relative velocities of planets orbiting around the sun. The planets themselves don’t really change direction, it’s just that the feeling of their changing speed and motion does have a very profound astrological significance because it does reveal information regarding the energy that planet is communicating.
Retrograde Planets in the Natal Chart: A retrograde planet in a natal chart insinuates that the energies and the themes of that particular planet are internalized so that the expression and development of those qualities in an individual’s life require more rumination and reevaluation. Commonly, retrograde planets signify areas in which delays, introspection, and a very individual approach to the concerned planetary influences may be experienced.
Mercury Retrograde: Mercury retrograde in a birth chart is reflective of internalized modes of thinking and communication. Such people may take more time to understand, speak, and convey how they feel. They likely reflect, reconsider, and ruminate over their choice, which will, in turn, make them reflective and thoughtful in communication as well as learning.
Venus Retrograde: Venus retrograde shows that one has a special way of dealing with love, relationships, and values. This placement often carries lessons in self-worth, and the person may need much introspection in matters of the heart. Past relationships will play a big role in their lives, and they may view things differently from the general belief of what should be desirable and valuable.
Mars Retrograde: The retrograde of Mars indicates the inner struggle of the individual’s assertiveness and actions. In most of the individuals who have this placement, the expression
of anger or the ability to take the lead often poses quite a problem. Mostly they have to work on being more conscious in their acts about their wants and how they get it. They repeatedly catch themselves reevaluating their intentions and methods.
Jupiter Retrograde: Individuals with this placement take a deeply philosophical and introspective approach to growth and expansion. They can be very questioning of their beliefs and, instead, search for internal validation of those beliefs rather than external. Much growth and learning comes about through introspection and reflection, which yields a profound understanding of their personal philosophies and ideals.
Saturn Retrograde: Saturn retrograde symbolizes discipline, responsibility, and authority internalized. People with this placement struggle with self-discipline and the idea of authority internally. They usually have to work out a personal sense of responsibility for themselves and may experience delays and obstacles that will push them to develop inner strength and toughness.
Uranus Retrograde: The natal placement of Uranus retrograde has more to do with an internalized rebellion and a unique approach to innovation and change. Many people with this placement might experience sudden insights and think quite unconventionally but sometimes have difficulties with inner fights over how to express their need for freedom and individuality.
Neptune Retrograde: Neptune retrograde means intuition, dreams, and spirituality are internalized. The individual with this placement may be super intuitive and visionary inside, but they sometimes lose the plot of differentiation between reality and illusion. Many times, they
have to work at developing clear perceptions in spirituality and intuitive insight.
Pluto Retrograde: Pluto retrograde symbolizes internalized change and the power differential. This can result in immense inner changes, and one will need to deal with some serious fears and desires. In this introspection, large changes in personality may occur, and one will learn much about their own real powers and transformation capabilities.
Retrograde Planets in Transit
The retrograde period of a planet consists of the slowing down of the planet and then, to our view, it appears to be moving backward across the sky. These periods are characterized by revisiting, reviewing, and reevaluating the concerns that are governed by the planet that happens to be retrograde. Each of the planets has a different cycle and length of time for being in retrograde; each affects our experience of the planet’s retrograde differently.
Mercury Retrograde: Mercury becomes retrograde three or four times a year and, as a rule, stays in retrograde for approximately three weeks. During this time, most people experience snags in communications, traveling, and technology. It’s the time to slow down the pace of life and reflect on what has been done in the past, including the decisions taken.
Guiding Questions:
– Am I being clear in my communication?
– What communications from the past remain incomplete?
– How might I be more specific?
Aligning with Mercury Retrograde:
– Review and rehash your plans.
– Review the communication and travel arrangements.
– Screen time—use this time to reconnect with old friends and heal unresolved issues.

– How can I assert myself more?
– What unresolved conflicts do I need to settle from the past?
Aligning with Mars Retrograde:
– Reevaluate your actions and that which drives you.
– Do not push for new beginnings; plan instead.

– How can I expand my horizons internally?
Aligning with Jupiter Retrograde:
– Reflect on your beliefs and longterm goals.
– Seek inner growth and philosophical understanding.
– Revisit areas of study or travel that need further exploration.
Saturn Retrograde: Saturn retrograde occurs once a year for about four and a half months. During this time, we are encouraged to reassess
our responsibilities, commitments, and longterm plans. It’s a period to build inner strength and resilience.

– What are the fears holding you back?
Aligning with Saturn Retrograde
– Reevaluate your responsibilities and long-term commitments.
– Work on inner strength and discipline.
– Face and resolve your fears.
Uranus Retrograde: Uranus retrograde lasts roughly five months a year. It is a time when attention turns inward, focusing on individual change, innovation, and more freedom. It calls upon us to look deep into where we feel constricted and how much individuality we are really prepared to portray. It tests us to become more accepting of our differences and to get ready to make sudden turns in life or new directions in life. It’s a transformative time that brings breakthroughs later in our environment.
Guiding Questions:
– How am I unique, and how can I express it?
– What is the change that is resisting me?
– How will I embody innovation in my life?
Aligning with Uranus Retrograde:
– Ponder your need for freedom and individuality.
– Allow yourself to be receptive to sudden illuminations and intuitive ideas.
– Allow yourself to be open to newness of perspective and change.
Neptune Retrograde: Neptune retrograde occurs once a year for about five months. This is a time for introspection about our dreams, intuition, and spiritual beliefs. It’s a time to clear up our visions and get through the illusions.
Guiding Questions:
– What illusions need dissolving?
– How may I connect to my inner vision?
– What spiritual practices need anchoring?
Aligning with Neptune Retrograde:
– Deepen spiritual practices and creative pursuits.
– Clarify dreams and intuitive insight.
– Don’t practice escapism; instead, meet reality with compassion.
Pluto Retrograde: Once every year, Pluto retrogrades for five months and, during this period, focuses on internal transformation, power dynamics, and coming to terms with profound levels of fear. Use the Pluto retrograde momentum as an opportunity for deep personal growth and rebirth.
Guiding Questions:
– What areas of my life do I need transforming?
– How can I take my power back?
– Which fears need confronting and healing?
Aligning with Pluto Retrograde
– Deep-seated fears and transformative issues must be confronted.
– Align with personal empowerment and rebirth.
– Reflect on power dynamics and seek to shift them positively.
It’s through aligning our energies with those retrograde planets that we can take this time for deep growth and realization of self, taking challenges as pathways to greater knowledge and personal growth.
Meeting the Gateways: The Angles
Before we move on, we need to meet a few more important energies that are just as vital as the planets in shaping your astrological story: the Gateways (as I call them, often called angles).
If the planets are the voices speaking through the chart, the Gateways are the doors those voices pass through. Because, in astrology, everything happens somewhere. Every conversation between planets, every moment of destiny, lands within a sacred space. The Gateways (ASC, DSC, MC, and IC) are those spaces. They don’t move like the planets; instead, they stand steady and strong, marking the key points where your inner world meets your outer reality. Just as the planets are voices in the chart, the Gateways are where those voices land.
Any planet near a Gateway, whether in your natal chart or by transit, carries extra weight. Planets near a Gateway always speak louder.
When a planet is close to a Gateway at birth, it leaves a lifelong imprint on your identity, your relationships, your roots, or your calling. When a planet crosses a Gateway by transit, it often signals major shifts, including new beginnings, fresh chapters, or life turning a page.
Learning to read the Gateways is a key step in speaking astrology with true fluency. Before we can fully hear the planets’ conversations and before we can speak the living language of the stars, we need to meet the Gateways. Just remember, the Gateways are the stage on which the planets perform.
Ascendant (ASC)
The ASC, or rising sign, is the point of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It marks the beginning of the first house.
Placement in the Chart: The ASC sits at the 9 o’clock position on the chart wheel (look directly to the left on your chart). It is the line that divides the twelfth house and the first house, serving as the entry point into the birth chart.
Representation Astrologically: The ASC represents the “face” you show to the world— the mask, first impressions, personal style, and how you instinctively approach life. It acts as the filter through which you express yourself outwardly and interact with your environment. It’s the energy people feel when they first meet you, before they even get to know the deeper layers underneath.
Natal Chart Significance: In the natal chart, the ASC colors your entire approach to life. It shapes your physical appearance, your instinctive
reactions, and your personal mannerisms. It’s not the core of your identity (that’s more the Sun), but it’s the vehicle your identity rides in. The ASC also sets the tone for the entire chart because it determines the starting degree of the houses, weaving the map of your life’s areas of focus.
Descendant (DSC)
The DSC is the point directly opposite the ASC, where the zodiac was setting on the western horizon at your moment of birth. It marks the beginning of the seventh house.
Placement in the Chart: The DSC sits at the 3 o’clock position on the chart wheel. It divides the sixth house from the seventh house.
Representation Astrologically: The DSC represents relationships, partnerships, and how we engage with others on a deep, one-to-one level. It reflects what qualities you seek in others, what you project outward, and how you experience partnership and collaboration. It’s often the traits you are drawn to in close relationships, sometimes because they complement you, and sometimes because they challenge you to grow.
Natal Chart Significance: In the natal chart, the DSC offers vital clues about your intimate relationships, marriage tendencies, and how you seek balance through “the other.” It can also show shadow aspects—the parts of yourself you may not easily see but recognize in others. Understanding your DSC brings depth to selfawareness around connection, trust, and personal growth through relationship.
Midheaven (MC)
The Midheaven, or MC, is from the Latin Medium Coeli, meaning “middle of the sky.” It represents your public face, your career, your
reputation, and the legacy you aspire to leave. It marks the beginning of the tenth house.
Placement in the chart: The MC is located at the 12 o’clock position at the very top of the chart wheel. It divides the ninth house from the tenth house.
Representation Astrologically: The MC speaks to your ambitions, career path, public life, and reputation. It’s the point that shows how you aim to be recognized and remembered. It connects to vocation, life goals, leadership, and your soul’s outward mission. It represents what you grow toward in the outer world, especially through your work and contributions.
Natal Chart Significance: In the natal chart, the MC is a powerful point that highlights your calling. It points to the nature of your career path, the achievements that bring fulfillment, and the professional or public reputation you are destined to build. Understanding your MC helps you navigate your true direction, offering clarity around what success and purpose really mean for you—not just according to external expectations, but from your own soul’s view.
Imum Coeli (IC)
The Imum Coeli , often called the IC, is Latin for “bottom of the sky.” It represents the deepest, most private parts of your life: your roots, home, and emotional foundation. It marks the beginning of the fourth house.
Placement in the Chart: The IC is located at the 6 o’clock position at the very bottom of the chart wheel. It divides the third house from the fourth house.
Representation Astrologically: The IC symbolizes your inner world. Your childhood experiences, family lineage, emotional core, and what feels like “home” to your soul. It’s where you retreat when you need safety, healing, or a return to yourself. The IC also connects to ancestral ties, the hidden emotional patterns passed down through family, and your inner psychological architecture.
Natal Chart Significance: In the natal chart, the IC reveals where and how you build emotional security. It speaks to the foundation you are either nurtured by or must learn to nurture for yourself. Often, it reflects your experience of your early home life, but it also reflects your soul’s private sanctuary. Understanding your IC brings insight into what you truly need to feel whole, protected, and at peace.
Wrapping Up the Foundations
You’ve met the planets (the professors, the tutors, and the messengers) and you’ve learned how they move both forward and in retrograde. You’ve also met the Gateways, the steady points that hold the shape of your life story.
All of this isn’t just knowledge to memorize. It’s the start of your fluency. Every planet, every movement, every Gateway you understand becomes part of how you speak astrology and how you bring the chart alive with real language, not just facts.
Now that you have this foundation, you’re ready for the next step: learning how the planets talk to each other. Let’s move into bringing the conversation together with astrology aspects.
