As we move into February, Parks & Recreation continues to balance winter operations with steady progress on several long-term projects. Staff have been focused on maintaining facilities during colder weather while also advancing planning, budgeting, and grant-related efforts that will shape the year ahead.
Several capital projects remain in active development, including ballfield improvements and park facility upgrades. FEMA-related projects are also continuing to move forward, with budgets being finalized and bid processes forthcoming. In addition, staff are preparing and reviewing materials related to upcoming grant opportunities, including PARTF and other funding sources that support park and recreation improvements.
Staff are also beginning preparations for the upcoming summer season. Planning meetings for parents of summer camp participants are being scheduled, and recruitment efforts are underway to hire summer camp counselors to support a safe, well-staffed, and successful program.
Public engagement remains a priority as work continues on the Parks & Recreation Master Plan. A public input meeting related to the Master Plan survey is scheduled for February 25th from 4:00–7:00 PM, providing community members an opportunity to share feedback and help guide future planning efforts.
The department remains focused on delivering consistent service, maintaining facilities, and positioning projects and programs for successful implementation as we move toward the spring season. Continued coordination with advisory boards and Town leadership is helping ensure priorities remain aligned with community needs.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like additional detail on any project or initiative.

WAYNESVILLE PARKS & RECREATION MASTER PLAN
What is a Parks & Recreation Master Plan?
A Parks & Recreation Master Plan is a long-range guide that helps our town plan for parks, trails, green spaces, community facili ties, and recreation programs over the coming years. Think of it as a road map that shows how Waynesville can best serve current residents and future generations — from playgrounds and sports fields to walking trails and natural spaces. Master plans look at existing conditions, community needs, and priorities, and recommend projects, timing, and strategies to make sure investments are smart, equitable, and sustainable.
Who is conducting Waynesville’s Master Plan?
Our Master Plan is being developed by WithersRavenel, a multidisciplinary planning and engineering firm with decades of experience helping communities like ours envision and implement parks, recreation, and open-space improvements. WithersRavenel is an employee-owned civil and community planning firm founded in 1983, with professionals in planning, landscape architecture, engineering, and public engagement working together to shape community plans and spaces.
Their Parks & Recreation planning process includes gathering data, assessing current facilities and programs, engaging res idents and stakeholders, and developing a vision and actionable recommendations that reflect what the community wants and needs.
Why Your Voice is So Important — Take the Community Survey!
A key part of the Master Plan is public input, and that’s where you come in. The survey we’ll be sharing soon is your chance to tell us what matters most to you — which parks and programs you use, what’s missing, what could be improved, and what future projects are priorities for Waynesville. Please scan the QR code below to take the survey.
Public surveys are crucial because they give planners a real, community-wide snapshot of what residents want and need. This feedback helps ensure the Master Plan doesn’t just reflect expert analysis, but also the opinions and experiences of the people who live here. Survey responses help guide decision-making, shape priorities, support grant applications, and improve transparency — ultimately leading to better parks, programs, and public spaces that reflect the community’s true needs.
Whether you’re a daily park visitor or someone who rarely uses recreational facilities — your input matters. The Master Plan’s success depends on hearing from as many voices as possible so that the final plan truly represents all corners of our community. Thank you for participating! Together, we can shape the future of parks and recreation in Waynesville for years to come.
