Hungarian grannies are bound to keep at least one Herendi porcelain on their shelves. The history of the Herendi Porcelain Manufactory, that has survived bankruptcy and world wars, is tightly intertwined with Hungarian history. The Belvedere Brand Shop on Andrássy Avenue (Andrássy út) offers the iconic products of this manufactory, and more: a historic showroom close to the shops of the most prestigious brands. Bolhapalota is the riskiest place to go for addicts of clothes and knick-knacks. Главный фасад Рыбацкого Бастиона, расположенного параллельно Дунаю, имеет длину 140 метров, его конические шатровые башни символизируют семь вождей племен, основавших венгерское государство. Он был построен по проекту архитектора Фридеша Шулека (Schulek Frigyes) в 1895 – 1902 годах в неороманском стиле на месте старой крепостной стены одновременно с реконструкцией церкви Матяша. Знаменитые здания Будапешта. The most attractive buildings of Budapest. The Hungarian capital city has a lot of historical buildings, which is worth to see by the foreign tourists. FISHERMEN’S BASTION. (I., Halászbástya), 15/03 to 15/10 an entrance fee must be paid between 9 am. and 11 pm. 16/10 to 14/03 free of charge.) The main façade of the Fisherman’s Bastion, running parallel to the Danube, is approximately 140 metres long. The seven stone towers with their pointed tops symbolise the leaders of the Hungarian tribes who conquered the country in 896. It was built in place of the old fortification walls in neo-Romanesque style between 1895 and 1902 on the plans of Frigyes Schulek, who was also in charge of the reconstruction of the Mathias Church. The Bastion takes its name from the guild of fishermen that was responsible for defending this stretch of the city walls in the Middle Ages. HUNGARIAN STATE OPERA HOUSE. (VI., Andrássy út 22. Phone: +36 1 353 0170, www.opera.hu). The Opera House opened to the public on 27 September 1884 with a gala performance featuring the overture of Bánk bán, followed by the overture of László Hunyadi (conducted by Ferenc Erkel) and the first act of Lohengrin (conducted by Sándor Erkel). The building, erected in neo-Renaissance style on the plans of Miklós Ybl, is among the finest 19th century monuments in Budapest. The richly decorated interiors were designed by renowned Hungarian artists such as Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.

Здание Венгерской Королевской Почтовой Сберегательной Кассы было построено в 1901 году по проекту популярного архитектора эпохи Едена Лехнера (Lechner Ödön) и Шандора Баумгартена (Baumgarten Sándor). Здание является одним из самых декоративных проектов Лехнера. В настоящее время в этом здании функционирует Венгерская Государственная Казна.
GRESHAM PALACE. (V. Széchenyi tér 5-6. Phone: +36 1 268 6000, www.fourseasons.com/budapest). An outstanding piece of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture. Completed in 1907 on the plans of Zsigmond Quittner and the Vágó brothers, it served as the Budapest office of Gresham Insurance Brokers, London. The first floor used to accommodate the renowned Gresham Café, where the Gresham Circle, a group of Hungarian artists held their meetings. As of today, Gresham Palace houses the luxurious Four Seasons Gresham Palace Hotel. GÜL BABA’S TOMB. (II., Mecset utca 14. Entry: Türbe tér 1. Phone: +36 1 326 0062), 01/03 to 31/10 Mo-Su 10 am. to 6 pm., 01/11 to 28/02 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Gül Baba’s Tomb, built by the Turks on the Eastern slopes of Rózsadomb during the 16th century, reminds us of the times when most parts of Hungary were under Turkish reign. During its most recent reconstruction, a genuine Turkish coffee house and an exhibition hall were established, adjoining the pilgrimage site. FERENC LISZT ACADEMY OF MUSIC. (VI., Liszt Ferenc tér 8. Phone: +36 1 342 0179). The Art Nouveau-style building that houses the Academy of Music was erected between 1904 and 1907 on the plans of Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl. Its main hall is an outstanding piece of early ferro-concrete construction in Hungary. The inside of the building features precious decorations such as ornamental glass and glass mosaic by Miksa Róth, frescoes by Aladár Kriesch as well as eosin-glazed tiles and ornaments from the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture, Pécs. The main façade includes a monumental statue of Ferenc Liszt by famous Alajos Stróbl. HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES. (V., Roosevelt tér 9. Phone: +36 1 411 6100, www.mta.hu). A nationwide campaign was started to raise money for the building in 1860, with the design competition launched in 1861. Construction works begun in the spring of 1862 under the supervision of Miklós Ybl and Antal Szkalnitzky. The building was inaugurated on 11 December 1865. The frescoes in the Ceremonial Hall were painted by Károly Lotz, while the small meeting room is decorated with landscapes by Antal Ligeti. NATIONAL POSTAL SAVINGS BANK. (V., Hold utca 4.) The offices of the Hungarian Royal Postal Savings Bank, built on the plans of Ödön Lechner and Sándor Baumgarten, were inaugurated in 1901. As of today, they host the Hungarian State Treasury. INSTITUTE OF BALLET. (VI., Andrássy út 25.) The Dreschler Palace, located opposite the Opera House, was built between 1883 and 1886 on the plans of Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos. The premises of the former Dreschler Café used to house the Institute of Ballet and the State Artistic Institute. Currently closed, with no decision as to the building’s new function.

The Geological Institute of Hungary is the country’s oldest scientific research institute that is still in existence today. Its seat is an outstanding building of Art Nouveau in Hungary, erected between 1898 and 1899 on the plans of Ödön Lechner. The building also houses the National Geological Museum as well as an exhibition commemorating the architect. CITY PARK. The City Park in Budapest was one of the first parks in the world to be open for the public as well. Heroes’ Square and Vajdahunyad Castle were built at the time of the 1896 millennium of the foundation of Christian Hungary, and the building complex, which can be seen today, was continuously supplemented with other buildings. It is the largest church in Budapest, the 96-metre dome of which can be seen from virtually all parts of the city. The Basilica’s construction begun in 1851, before being taken over by Miklós Ybl, one of the leading architects of the time in 1867 and completed by József Kauser in 1905. The Classicist-style building houses Hungary’s most sacred relic: the Holy Right, which is the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, after whom the Basilica was named. Famous masterpieces in the church include statues by Alajos Stróbl and a painting of St. Stephen offering his country to the Virgin Mary by Gyula Benczúr. MATTHIAS CHURCH. (I., Szentháromság tér, Mo-Sa 9 am. to 5 pm., Su from 1 pm.) The most beautiful and most well-known Catholic church in Budapest, which thanks to its outstanding location largely determines the image of the Castle District, as seen from the Pest side. Officially named as the Church of Our Lady, this royal cathedral was erected in multiple steps (between the 13th and 15th centuries). It gained its present-day neo-Gothic form in 1896, following a major reconstruction overseen by Frigyes Schulek. The frescos and stainedglass windows were made by Károly Lotz, Mihály Zichy and Bertalan Székely, the most prestigious artists of the time. From the rich collection of the church, the stone exhibition, the relic exhibition, the coronation monuments as well as the treasury boasting masterpieces of gold work as well as ecclesiastical textiles are open to the public. (The museum is currently closed due to reconstruction.)

DOHÁNY STREET SYNAGOGUE. (VII., Dohány u. 2. Guided tours for groups every hour.) The size of the building, which was inaugurated in 1659, reflects the significance of the Jewish population in the capital in that period. The synagogue was built in four years based on the plans with a Moorish style drawn up by a German architect, Ludwig Förster, who was a teacher at the academy of Vienna. Tivadar Herzl, who was a writer, journalist and a promoter of the creation of a Jewish state, was born in 1860 in the adjacent corner building, which has been pulled down since then (the Jewish Museum stands there nowadays). SERBIAN CHURCH. (V., Szerb utca 2-4. can be visited daily.) This was built by Serbian settlers in 1698 in the Baroque style. Its interior follows the ground plan of Greek Catholic churches: the women’s church is separated from the men’s church, which is situated one step lower, with a wooden balustrade. CALVINIST CHURCH IN THE CITY CENTRE. (IX., Kálvin tér), Every day. Neo-Gothic building from the 19th century. The atrium of the main entrance, with its four columns, was designed by József Hild. ST. ANNE’S CHURCH. (I., Batthyány tér 7. Can be visited every day during masses 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.) St. Anne’s Church is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Budapest. The construction work on the church began in 1740 based on the plans of Kristóf Hámon, and it was finished in 1761 by Mátyás Nepauer. During the following 200 years the church was afflicted by wars, floods and earthquakes, and finally it was restored in 1970-84. ■

This Cogwheel Railway is very old, it was built when there were lots of grape plantaions on the hill side of Buda. BUDAPEST PUPPET THEATRE. Корни изготовления ювелирных изделий уходят в древние времена. Уже 5 000 лет назад египтяне знали, что золото не окисляется, мягкое и легко обрабатывается. Кроме украшений фараона из него изготовляли браслеты, цепочки, серьги и кольца. Как мужчины, так и женщины носили украшения и благодаря погребальным обычаям большая их часть сохранилась до сегодняшнего времени. The origins of art of jewellery date back to ancient times and it was as long as 5000 years ago that the Egyptians discovered that gold is malleable, ductile and doesn’t oxidise. They used it to create various adornments for the pharaohs as well as for the making of bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings. Золото называется королем благородных металлов. Despite this, gold is actually an extremely soft metal. Incredible as it might seem, 24-carat gold is so soft that a 2000-metre wire or a 0.0001-mm foil can be beaten from only one gram of the metal. In fact the latter, known as gold leaf, is used for gold-plating jewellery and many other objects. In its natural form gold exists as an ore. Gold ore is eroded from rocks by the elements and ends up in alluvial deposits. It is these deposits that have resulted in several gold rushes until the quantity of that fluvial gold was reduced to insignificance. Exploiting the small remaining amount of gold left in the rivers is no longer economically viable. Now precious metals are mined in industrial proportions. Bringing the mined gold to the surface is economical even if only 2 grams of gold is extracted from one ton of rock. The biggest gold deposits are located in the South African Republic accounting for about 40 %, approximately 45 000 tons, of the world’s entire gold production. Other major producers are the USA, Canada and Australia. Native gold is rarely pure; instead it is contaminated by silver, copper, platinum and other metals. In order to purify the gold, the ore needs to undergo various procedures. As gold fuses at 1064 ºC, the ore is initially heated to 1200 ºC, at which temperature all

Таким образом, тяжело решить, что дороже: ожерелье из драгоценных камней или используемое при коронации украшение, символизирующее страну, а может быть обручальное кольцо, которое носим всю свою жизнь? На данный момент в мире добытым золотом можно заполнить шар диаметром в 27 метров. Почти половина мирового ювелирного запаса находится на пальцах семейных пар. Ювелирные изделия составляют 40 % мирового золотого запаса. Золото также было замечено и в морской воде. Оцениваемое количество сырья составляет около десяти миллиардов тонн, на обрабатывание которого в настоящее время еще не существует экономического решения. Японией осуществляются испытания над разработкой морских растений и водорослей, которые в течении своего роста могут накапливать золото. Затем они сжигаются и из полученной золы промышленными способами получается золото. Данный эксперимент не был достаточно удачным, но поиски продолжаются. ■

On completion of the refining process the gold is as pure as possible, 999.9 thousandths, 24-carat gold. The next stage of the process is the production of gold bars which are the raw material for making jewellery or are purchased for investment purposes because of stable value worldwide. The BUD Stock Exchange has provided this investment possibility since 2004. One ounce of gold is equal to 31.1 grams. Of course gold bars come in a variety of sizes; a bar of 1000 grams is worth more than 5 million HUF. Jewellery is rarely crafted from 24-carat gold, since it is simply too soft. To make jewellery durable, gold is alloyed with silver, copper, palladium or platinum. Jewellers generally use 18-carat and 14-carat gold, which are 75 % and 58.33 % gold respectively. Various alloys of lower carat, such as 9-carat gold, exist but are rarely used for making jewellery. All gold-alloys contain silver and copper while platinum and palladium are used to do white gold. Jewellery decorated with precious stones has an even greater value. The actual value of the precious metal used for setting the stone has less significance as it is merely used as an instrument to emphasize the beauty of the stone. However, the value of jewellery is relative and other more subjective aspects must be taken into consideration; the historical or social importance of a piece or even sentimental value which an item represents to a specific person. Thus, it is difficult to decide which is worth more; a symbolic royal crown or a wedding ring worn for a lifetime? The total amount of gold produced to date worldwide is sufficient to fill a 27-metre diameter sphere. Jewellery comprises 40 % of the world’s entire gold stock with almost half of that amount in the form of wedding rings. Gold also occurs in trace amounts in sea-water. Its total amount is estimated to be as high as 10 billion tons but no economical method has as yet been discovered to extract it. ■

The beginning of the 21st century was an exciting turning point in the nightlife of Budapest: in the central area of the city new places were opened one after another in tenement houses and factory buildings doomed to destruction. These were equipped with rejected furniture of old community centres, cinemas, and grandmothers’ flats, bringing a retro feeling into these places. They were soon called ruinpubs and became popular very fast among the youth of Budapest - ruinpub is the exact translation of the Hungarian name. Ruinpubs often move to a new place, or close for some years, then open in a new place again. They are are not only good places to drink and have a party but also function as cultural community areas with film clubs, theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, and creative workshops, too. They do not work in a franchise system, there is no specified design, and there are no rules, how to make them. Every place has a unique style and atmosphere. In Szimpla kert (Simple Garden) you can have a beer in a cannibalized old Trabant car. In Instant you can stroll around in the labyrinth of the tenement house. In Kertem (My Garden) you can feel the atmosphere of a socialist beer-garden of the 1980s. Getting to know Budapest by ruinpubs is like being guided here by a local friend.
