Andrássy Avenue, including the Millennium Underground Railway, running beneath the surface, as well as Heroes’ Square, located at is end, was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 2002. It accommodates the crème de la crème of Eclectic-style buildings in Budapest, among them a wealth of residential houses with wonderful and intimate inner courts, statues and foundations as well as the Opera House, built on the plans of Miklós Ybl. ■

CHAIN BRIDGE. With the Buda Castle in the background, the Hungarian capital’s first bridge, now a monument, is a fascinating spectacle that has attracted many tourists to Budapest. The bridge was built upon the request of Count István Széchenyi by designer William Tierney Clark and engineer Adam Clark between 1839 and 1849. Like many other Danube bridges, the Chain Bridge did not survive the ravages of the World War, so it had to be rebuilt in 1949, marking the centenary of its first opening. Visitors also have the opportunity to walk onto the top of the tunnel located on the Buda side, offering a marvellous view of the Danube, its bridges as well as the nicest parts of Pest. HERO’S SQUARE. Located at the end of Andrássy Avenue, Heroes’ Square is the entrance to the City Park as well as one of the most spectacular venues in Budapest. The three main sites of the square include the Hall of Art, built in 1896, the Museum of Fine Arts, inaugurated in December 1906, as well as the Millennium Monument, linking both buildings visually. The latter includes a 36-metre central column, topped by a statue of the archangel Gabriel who holds the Holy Crown as well as a two-barred apostolic cross, the same way as the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary, St. Stephen did in his sleep according to a legend. Здание Парламента было построено по планам архитектора Имре Штейндла в 1884-1904 годы. Длина здания – 268 метров, высота купола – 96 метров. В здании расположены 691 помещение. С 2000 года на территории Парламента появилась возможность увидеть венгерские королевские регалии: корону Святого Иштвана, скипетр и державу, меч эпохи ренессанса. Здание Парламента совсем недавно было отреставрировано, перед ним был возведен красивый парк, в котором приятно гулять и отдыхать. The Parliament, built in Neo-Gothic style and located on the bank of the Danube, serves as the permanent seat of the National Assembly. The building complex, the biggest of its kind in Hungary, was erected between 1884 and 1904 on the plans of Imre Steindl. The building has 691 rooms, and it is 268 metres long and the dome 96 metres high. Since 2000, the Hungarian coronation symbols —St. Stephen’s crown, the sceptre, the orb and the Renaissance sword— have been on display in the Parliament. The Parlaiment has a brand new Visitor Center with café and in front of the building there is a beautiful park for walking. In the Visitor Center you can buy your ticket to visit the Parliament inside. ■

It is the second-largest synagogue in the world, the largest in Europe. It was built between 1854 and 1859 in Romantic style, on the plans of Ludwig Förster in cooperation with Frigyes Feszl. The building consists of three spacious aisles and seats more than 3000 people. Due to its strong Oriental style, the use of colourful mud bricks, as well as the wrought-iron structure in its interior, the Dohány Street Synagogue is notable as an architectural landmark. During World War 2, it served as the boundary of the Budapest Ghetto—a fact remembered by The Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs, a work of sculptor Imre Varga. Остров Маргит (Margitsziget) - между мостом Маргит (Margit híd) и мостом Арпад (Árpád híd) Остров является зеленым кораблем Дуная, царством купален, целебных источников, замечательных парков с изумрудными лужайками. Это самый красивый парк столицы, раскинувшийся между мостами Маргит и Арпад, имеющий длину 2,8 км. На территории острова расположены средневековые сакральные памятники архитектуры, современные дорожки skywalk, водонапорная башня, находящаяся под охраной UNESCO, известный музыкальный фонтан, рядом с ним пляж, беговая дорожка, гостиница, рестораны и многочисленные спортивные и развлекательные площадки. Автобус – амфибия. В один миг после наземной прогулки можем оказаться в реке благодаря одному из самого зрелищного средства передвижения в Будапеште. Это автобус – амфибия RiverRide. Пешеходы, вначале с подозрением поглядывавшие на странный автобус, к нему уже привыкли. Маршрут его пролегает мимо Парламента, пл. Героев, театра Оперы, Будайской Крепости, с отправлением от здания Венгерской Академии Наук (пл. Сечени). Идеальные трамвайные прогулки. Для ознакомления с набережной по обе стороны реки надо отправиться на трамвае 19 и 41 со стороны Буды от пл. Баттяни и на трамвае номер 2 с пл. Ясаи Мари в Пеште. Потратив на каждую поездку 40 минут, мы проедем по Будапешту до конечной остановки трех маршрутов. На трамвае номер 2 мы попадем на когда-то очень застроенную заводами ул. Шорокшари, на трамвае 19 доедем до вокзала Келенфолд, откуда отправляются поезда в сторону озер Веленце и Балатон, а на трамвае 41 мы попадем в дикий лес Камараэрдо. После этих приключений имеет смысл сесть на трамваи 4 и 6 и сделать несколько удивительных маршрутных кругов и в прямом смысле слова объехать город кругом. Одной из конечных остановок трамвая номер 6 является пл. Мориц Жигмонд (вблизи моста Петофи на будайской стороне) и трамвая номер 4 ул. Фехервари. Другой конечной остановкой трамваев является пл. Сел Калман. К ней подходят оба трамвая, проезжая через все участки городского кольца (Йожеф, Эржебет, Терез, Сент Иштван и Маргит) и моста Маргит. По этому маршруту используется самый длинный в Европе однополый тип трамвая Комбино Супра (Combino Supra) длиной 54 метра с 353 посадочными местами. ■.

Worldwide, the market for jewel quality diamonds is estimated to be worth nearly 70 billion dollars. The USA alone represents 45 percent of the market with annual diamonds sales worth in excess of 30 billion dollars. Last year, as a result of the present financial crisis, the demand for these precious stones dropped radically. Gem Diamonds, one of the biggest US diamond retailers suffered a 24 percent drop in sales, in spite of a 14 percent price cut. In terms of raw materials, the price has fallen from $2,500 to $1,382 per carat since the onset of the economic crisis. De Beers, the world’s largest diamond mining company with a 40 percent share of the world’s diamond market, recently announced a major cut in diamond production. The world’s second largest diamond producer, Russia’s Alrosa, has announced a 40 percent cut in production and India, where most of the world’s diamonds are cut imports of raw stones has stopped completely. Japan, a country ranked among the most important importers of cut diamonds with an annual turnover of 726 million USD , has significantly decreased its imports by 39 percent in response to a 26 percent decrease in sales. According to David Rapaport, a leading expert in the trade, ‘the market for these high priced gems seems to be on the verge of collapse’ adding that the retail prices for top quality stones are so low at the moment that dealers would rather hold on to their stock. The market for fancy coloured diamonds which are incredibly rare is the only sector of the market that looks like it’s holding its own. Both Rapaport, who gained his reputation by determining base prices and Avi Paz, the president of the 26 member World Federation of Diamond Markets has unanimously called upon all mining companies to limit production. This year at Sotheby’s 30 diamonds, all truly promising lots, have had to be withdrawn from sale, after failing to meet the reserve

prices and Sotheby’s annual sale of diamonds has fallen drastically from last years figure of $60 million to only 18 million Swiss Francs. The recent auction in Hong Kong of a rare 10.5 carat blue diamond turned out to be their biggest set back when in spite of the 10 million Franc reserve price, the bidding stalled at 5.7 million. Just a short time before diamonds were selling like hot cakes as in their heyday. For example nearly six million dollars was paid for a ring mounted with a 34 carat diamond which is almost a record price of 170 thousand dollars per carat. This reflects the trend for more valuable stones rather than lower priced items and though between 2006 and 2007 the number of the diamonds sold under the hammer decreased by 18 percent, the value of these stones increased by a remarkable 43 percent. Fortunately, not all the news from the diamond market is bad news. At Christie’s auction house in London, a unique 35.56 carat diamond blue stone known as Wittelsbach diamond went under the hammer for a record price. This marvellous gem which had been represented by Velázquez on a portrait of known as the ‘Infant Margarita’ fetched a huge price of $16.4 million ($24.31 million including commissions). Top English jeweller Laurence Graff, who bought the diamond insisted that it was a truly great deal adding that the diamond is worth over 50 million dollars. Apparently Graff is still following the old saying that ‘A crisis is a good time to buy” having gone on to buy a 478 carat uncut white diamond in Lesotho for 12 million dollars. In terms of sales, the shots are called by De Beers, the company formed by Cecil Rhodes who also founded the Diamond Syndicate which became the first world’s fist association of diamond producers in the world. Rhodes could then control the quality and availability of the diamonds on the market by selecting which stones were sent to be polished. Today, a subsidiary of De Beers founded in 1934, ‘The Diamond Trading Company’ (DTC), still plays the dominating role in the diamond market. The DTC also controls the sale of stones mined by Russia’s Alrosa, a situation which has been brought into question by the European Union on a number of occasions. In addition, the company was also unsuccessfully challenged in Brussels by Antwerp diamond traders complaining about misuse arising out of the superiority system. The system developed by De Beers turned out to be invulnerable and even today all diamonds are sold through 250 privileged ‘sightholders’ who enjoy exclusive rights to buy diamonds at rates well below market prices. It is impossible for an outsider to gain entry to this select circle. The unique sales chain begins with sightholders who are entitled to visit De Beers at either their London or Tokyo headquarters where they are offered the ‘sight’ which is a previously prepared packet containing a variety of stones of different sizes and quality. There is no negotiation and sightholders must purchase the whole packet at a total cost of about $ 1-2 million. The sightholders can accept or refuse the packet but if the buyer were to reject the packet they would be immediately deleted from

The reason why this business may hurt many parties seems quite straightforward: those on the list of sightholders can purchase that packet of stones at a price that no one else can match. Diamonds then are sold on either cut or uncut at a diamond exchange where a handshake is a binding contract. There are 26 registered diamond exchanges throughout the world, all completely different from conventional exchanges. These are closed establishments with their own police service, an elected law court, a restaurant and a synagogue. Reminiscent of a Gentlemen’s Club, when there are no customers present members can eat, drink and play cards. There are no computers, and potential buyers discretely examine the merchandise in silence and business in conducted in whispers. Those wishing to do business sit down on isolated tables where interruptions are not considered to be polite. After much choice and serious bargaining, if the buyer and seller can reach an agreement, the business is then settled by a handshake accompanied by the following magic words: ‘mazel und broche’ meaning luck and prosperity. These few words are considered to be much more binding than official contracts. Businessmen at the diamond exchange prefer to avoid bank transfers and anyone who does not pay promptly will be blacklisted. Should this happen on two occasions the buyer will immediately become ‘persona non grata’. Since the 16th century Antwerp has been regarded as the world’s most important diamond trading centre. Throughout the first half of the 2010s the local diamond exchanges increased turnover to nearly 34 billion dollars whereas the current balance-sheet shows just 20 billion. In ‘Ramat Gan’, Tel Aviv’s diamond quarter, 17 billion dollars changes hands annually. The main venue for the uncut diamond trade has moved to Dubai where dealers can take advantage of both the close location to China and India plus the exceptionally favourable tax system. It is undoubtedly in China where the industry seems to have the brightest future. The number of rich people generously spending money on luxury goods is estimated by experts to be already in the several hundred thousands. Carla Champagne and Guest House The Kertész Family’s Winery in Etyek has already been awarded almost one hundred prizes at prestigious wine competitions. For example, some of their wines were awarded VinAgora gold medals, and their white wines were among the top10 several times in the Top 100 wines list compiled by the daily Nepszabadság. The Kertész Winery has won a lot Prestige Reserve gold prizes, and a number of ‘Commitment to Excellence’ awards at wine competitions abroad recently. Their Carla champagne is so successful that it is already considered an outstanding brand on the wine market. The owner Zoltán Kertész has a good reason to be proud of this performance, but he is the type of person who never rests on his laurels and always looks for ways to improve. So far, he has received customers in his cellar in the well known Kecskegödör (Goat’s Pit) in Etyek, but from now on this will only be a functional cellar, a venue for vinicultural analyses and a tasting site for new wines, because visitors are now welcome to the top class Carla Champagne and Guest House in Öreghegy (Old Hill), Etyek. The most important objectives of this project were expanding the capacity, and moving in the direction of catering. In this spectacular cellar, visitors may taste champagnes and wines in a wonderful environment. The cellar also serves as a venue for splendid parties, small groups, birthday parties and corporate events. Wine or culinary courses are held. Events and wedding parties for 60 to 100 people may also be staged here. Carla Champagne and Guest House is open nearly every day for delicious food and fine drinks. Accommodation for 6 is available currently, but an expansion of the lodging facilities is envisaged. The drinks list at the Carla Champagne and Guest House includes not only Kertész wines, but also champagnes from all the prestigious Etyek wineries. Carla champagne can be tasted as well as those from Hungary’s other single estate producers. Well known champagnes from beyond Hungary’s borders are available. A gastronomic treasure trove has been created in Öreghegy (Old Hill), between the Hernyak cellar and the Etyek Kuria winery. This location affords beautiful views of the Etyek vineyards and the Buda hills from the terrace. This is an island of peace where one can relax while having good wines and food. Drinks are served with simple, but tasty food, like cheese and ham platters, spreads, tapas, one-dish meals, barbecue meat, and Italian-like pasta. Carla Champagne and Guest House is a four storey building with impressive interior spaces and huge terraces. A conservatory is to be built soon. A special attraction of the house are the glass panels let into the floor. The guest house offers a special service: if a group of 8 people wish to visit Etyek for a wine-tasting party, and they express their intention to buy at least one case of Kertesz wines to be consumed at home, an air-conditioned van is sent to fetch them, i.e. they are taken from and then back to Budapest free of charge. By the way, customers who enjoy a drink at the Carla Champagne and Guest House may also get back home easily, because a chauffeur service from Etyek to Budapest costs 6-7000 HUF only, and taking a taxi is also affordable. Carla Champagne and Guest House is an excellent place for events. It is planned to run wine sommelier courses, hold art events and exhibitions, launch film club, and organise concerts. Рамзи щедро отказался от комиссионных, хотя вино под его именем очень хорошо продаётся. Не характерна такая щедрость для музыканта Карлоса Сантаны. Шампанское G.H. Mumm разлили в 2005 году под названием Santana DVX и определённые проценты после продажи выплачиваются музыканту. Collaborations between celebrities and wine are becoming increasingly common. For instance Italy’s Fattoria Le Terazze’s Planet Vawes, a Rosso Conero is named for Bob Dylan’s seminal 1974 album and labeled with his likeness, art work and signiture. This was a collaboration between the vintner Antonio Terni and Dylan with the wine structired by Terni to resemble what he beleived Dylan’s charachter to be like. Bob Dylan himself is a very talented wine maker, his first red, the „Johanna vision Montepulcano” is a really good wine. Gordon Ramsey also lent his likeness to a bottle on request. Ramsey had served in his London restaurant several bottles of Chateau Bauduc Bordeaux. Celebrating that fact the winemaker pasted his face on Gordon Ramsey’s selection. which include two whites, a red and a rose.
The chef allowed to use of his name and image without renumeration, as opposed to guitarist Carlos Santana, who received royalties for helping G.H. Mumm bottle Santana DVX in 2005. As a bonus one US dollar from every bottle sold benefitied the Santana’s global arts- education- and health oriented Milagro Foundation. Renowned film producer Francis Ford Coppola is so entrenched in Napa Valley with his Rubicon Estate in Rutherford and his Francis Ford Coppola winery in Geyserville that he is credited for the valley’s rebirth in wine tourism. French actor Gerard Depardieu has publicly declared his intetion to retire from the film industry to work full time with wine and food. He owns nearly 20 chateau and restaurants in France and he even list vigneron in his passport as his profession. It can happen, the new generation will know this name, Gerard Depardieu as a wine maker and not as an actor. The great golfer, the world champion Greg Norman is the producer of Australian Eden Valley Chardonnay, Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. The logo on the labels of the wine bottles are sharks, it is because Norman’s nickname from the priofessional golfing world. The wholesellers looking for wines with traditions which are popular, because these can be easily sold. The wines of celebraties do not need any traditions, it is enough to print the name of the star on the label and the bottle is sold immidiately. For example Ribera del Duero Spanish wine made by Antonio Banderas is on the top lists of the wine shops for years, because the actor is so polular. By the way it is a good wine, Banderas got help from a famous wine maker to create it. ■

Дворы Гожду Название Дворы Гожду относится к имени румынского адвоката. Эманоил Гожду (Emanoil Gojdu) был богатым человеком, известным предпринимателем и меценатом. Best Bistro and Music Pubs Among all types of catering units in Hungary, it is perhaps Budapest’s bistro and music pubs that can mobilize the largest number of guests today. Obviously, this can be attributed to several factors; but the key explanation is that pubs are capable of reaching and serving the widest range of customer base. When the pub culture was started in Hungary, almost all of the newly opened small pubs were based upon the traditions of English/Irish pubs, offering local copies of those. Later on, when competition among pubs became ever more intense, and people got bored of the old and thirsted for something new, small thematic pubs started to proliferate, offering entertainment opportunities for specific groups of customers and carving out a segment of this market. Gozsdu Udvar Gozsdu Udvar was named after a Romanian lawyer, Manó Gozsdu, famous for his realestate investments. The complex under the name was designed by the famous architect Győző Czigler and built in 1901, almost 30 years after Gozsdu himself had passed away. The complex consists of 7 buildings and a passage formed by six interconnected courtyards, which once played a very important part in the life of the Jewish community. The first Jewish prayer houses were established here alongside different stores and shops. A lot has changed since, but Gozsdu Udvar, a small city within the city, is in bloom again. You can find a whole bunch of cafés, bars, restaurants, shops and clubs here, like Spíler, DiVino, Kolor, Blue Bird Café or Szomszéd, and also enjoy art exhibitions, fairs, concerts and other events all year long, so it’s always worth a visit. It is small wonder that Spíler in Gozsdu Udvar distinguishes itself as ruin pub 2.0 because it is teeming with novelties, adding a unique colour to the bar palette of Budapest. The interior might be over-eclectic and excessively crowded in places, but it is arguably original thanks

The beginning of the 21st century was an exciting turning point in the nightlife of Budapest: in the central area of the city new places were opened one after another in tenement houses and factory buildings doomed to destruction. These were equipped with rejected furniture of old community centres, cinemas, and grandmothers’ flats, bringing a retro feeling into these places. They were soon called ruinpubs and became popular very fast among the youth of Budapest - ruinpub is the exact translation of the Hungarian name. Ruinpubs often move to a new place, or close for some years, then open in a new place again. They are are not only good places to drink and have a party but also function as cultural community areas with film clubs, theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, and creative workshops, too. They do not work in a franchise system, there is no specified design, and there are no rules, how to make them. Every place has a unique style and atmosphere. In Szimpla kert (Simple Garden) you can have a beer in a cannibalized old Trabant car. In Instant you can stroll around in the labyrinth of the tenement house. In Kertem (My Garden) you can feel the atmosphere of a socialist beer-garden of the 1980s. Getting to know Budapest by ruinpubs is like being guided here by a local friend.
