The city of your dreams in the TOKAY WINE region: VÉCSECITY. Although not all Hungarians are aware of this, each and every square inch of Hungary from Hegyeshalom to Hidasnemeti, and from Szob to Roszke is theirs, and each square inch requires the same love, care, and affection. Its beauty should be looked after, and not left abandoned. Why, this approach is not a utopian dream. From Austria to Belgium and from Switzerland to Sweden numerous European examples may be attractive and worth following, to make sure that Hungary becomes a better place to live in, a country increasingly liked by the outside world. Indeed, with the revealing of forgotten inner values may the cultural competence merely characterising small sporadic regions of the country today be expanded. There are some, who attempt to explore and improve those areas once shown as blank spots in our childhood maps (although they should rather be called dark areas in today’s Hungary), and they are actually aiming at reviving the old values of cultural history. With 800 to 900 inhabitants, Hernadvecse was a village associated with a large estate in the Hernad valley, on the southern slopes of the Cserehat hills in the shade of the Zemplen hills, almost half-way between the cities of Miskolc and Kosice. With the abolishing of the large estate, this settlement was trapped by history, and under the negative impacts of social changes it has recently become the second poorest settlement in Hungary, while its natural endowments and industrial circumstances did not change at all.

There is a Hungarian proverb, which says ‘Any damage caused by people may only be repaired by people’. Is it true? May the abatements be removed from the coat of arms of a country? Questions, which need answers. Will they be answered? Built in 1790, the listed neo-Baroque building of the Count Vecsey – Baron Sardagna mansion was in ruins and showed signs of hardship, deterioration and neglect in 2007. (Caption to Picture 1: The house wine comes from Tokay). Courage, blindness, determination or faith? Which of these traits was needed by someone to buy this building, unwanted and unloved by anyone else? The decision and the underlying reasons are explained by Dr Tibor Takacs and his wife Lidija Takacs Plibersek (from Debrecen), the buyers of the castle and the surrounding park. The primary incentives were the architectural challenges of saving a beautiful building, protecting the existing values, and then adapting the building to a new function which caters for survival and further existence. This is how Hotel Vecsecity, ‘the city in a castle’ was established. This is indeed a beautifully implemented fourstar superior quality hotel, where the past meets the present, and where from the world of antique furniture and museum pieces radiating the flair of several centuries, a straight path leads to a well-matched present, which actually points to a vibrant future. The whole facility astonishes the visitor by many architectural specialities: the City is a place which lets your imagination run wild. The building has lovable rooms and secluded corners throughout. You made a good decision to visit the Hungarian capital. Let you allow me to propose for you as a start a walking tour in the hearth of the city. Våci Street is a renowned pedestrian shopping street of Budapest. It stretches to a little more than a mile between Vorosmarty Square and the Great Market Hall. Thankfully, the pedestrian underpass at its busy crossing with Kossuth Lajos utca by the Elizabeth Bridge, which had cut Våci Street in half, has been replaced by a signal-controlled crossing and this is a major improvement to „user experience�. The northern half of the street is lined with fashion stores, while the southern half is better known for its gift shopsand its bistros of slightly questionable reputation. VÜrÜsmarty Square is the most elegant pedestrian zone in Budapest. It lies at the northern end of Våci Street and above the western end of the Millennium Underground. The Pest-side pedestrian zone between the Chain Bridge and the Elizabeth Bridge is called Danube Promenade (Duna-korzó). The promenade is a popular spot among locals and tourists both. It is fringed with 5-star hotels (InterContinental, Marriott, Sofitel), restaurants, cafÊs, bars and casinos. Some say it has the best panorama of Buda with clear and gorgeous view of the Buda Castle, the Citadel, GellÊrt Hill and some of the bridges of Budapest .

Здание служит постоянным местом заседания Государственного Собрания. Здание Парламента было построено по планам архитектора Имре Штейндла в 1884-1904 годы. Длина здания – 268 метров, высота купола – 96 метров. В здании расположены 691 помещение. С 2000 года на территории Парламента появилась возможность увидеть венгерские королевские регалии: корону Святого Иштвана, скипетр и державу, меч эпохи ренессанса. Здание Парламента совсем недавно было отреставрировано, перед ним был возведен красивый парк, в котором приятно гулять и отдыхать. Также был открыт Центр для посетителей, где можно ознакомиться с историей Парламента, посидеть в кафе, приобрести входной билет для ознакомления с Парламентом внутри. Цепной мост. Этот первый исторический и значимый мост столицы, на заднем плане с удивительном видом Будайской Крепости, привлекает и манит огромное количество туристов. По инициативе графа Иштвана Сечени мост был построен по проекту инженера Вильяма Терней Кларка под руководством инженера Адама Кларка в 1839-1849 годы. Во время II Мировой войны и этот мост через Дунай был разрушен, но в 1949 году, в честь 100 летней годовщины со дня его возведения, был восстановлен в первоначальной виде. На крышу тоннеля, находящегося на будайской стороне можно подняться пешком и сверху полюбоваться великолепным видом на Дунай. Крепостной Базар. У подножья Крепостной горы растянулся совсем недавно отреставрированный Крепостной Базар, также являющийся одной из главной достопримечательностью Будапешта. Обязательно стоит посмотреть! Прогуляйтесь вдоль Базара, построенного в стиле неоренесанса! Budapest, Kossuth tér. telephone: +36 1 441 4415. www.latogatokozpont.parlament.hu) The Parliament, built in Neo-Gothic style and located on the bank of the Danube, serves as the permanent seat of the National Assembly. The building complex, the biggest of its kind in Hungary, was erected between 1884 and 1904 on the plans of Imre Steindl. The building has 691 rooms, and it is 268 metres long and the dome 96 metres high. Since 2000, the Hungarian coronation symbols —St. Stephen’s crown, the sceptre, the orb and the Renaissance sword— have been on display in the Parliament. The Parlaiment has a brand new Visitor Center with café and in front of the building there is a beautiful park for walking. In the Visitor Center you can buy your ticket to visit the Parliament inside. CHAIN BRIDGE. With the Buda Castle in the background, the Hungarian capital’s first bridge, now a monument, is a fascinating spectacle that has attracted many tourists to Budapest. The bridge was built upon the request of Count István Széchenyi by designer William Tierney Clark and engineer Adam Clark between 1839 and 1849. Like many other Danube bridges, the Chain Bridge did not survive the ravages of the World War, so it had to be rebuilt in 1949, marking the centenary of its first opening. Visitors also have the opportunity to walk onto the top of the tunnel located on the Buda side, offering a marvellous view of the Danube, its bridges as well as the nicest parts of Pest. VÁRKERT BAZAR. Below the castle you can find the Várkert Bazár which has been renovated recently, do not miss! The Neorenaissance Garden can be visited free of charge. The main façade of the Fisherman’s Bastion, running parallel to the Danube, is approximately 140 metres long. The seven stone towers with their pointed tops symbolise the leaders of the Hungarian tribes who conquered the country in 896. It was built in place of the old fortification walls in neo-Romanesque style between 1895 and 1902 on the plans of Frigyes Schulek, who was also in charge of the reconstruction of the Mathias Church. The Bastion takes its name from the guild of fishermen that was responsible for defending this stretch of the city walls in the Middle Ages. ■

Located at the end of Andrássy Avenue, Heroes’ Square is the entrance to the City Park as well as one of the most spectacular venues in Budapest. The three main sites of the square include the Hall of Art, built in 1896, the Museum of Fine Arts, inaugurated in December 1906, as well as the Millennium Monument, linking both buildings visually. Amongst Budapests most popular attractions are undoubtedly its thermal baths, now renowned throughout the world. Although Budapest has only officially carried the title as a Spa City for 80 years, its unique facilities were fully recognized by Roman legionaries over 2000 years ago! Шампанское можно сохранить игристым намного дольше, чем мы думаем. Исследователи поставили рядом друг с другом две открытые бутылки с шампанским, в одну из них поместили ложку. В обеих бутылках шипучесть уменьшалась одинаково и только через 96 часов полностью прекратилась! Так как открытыми одновременно две бутылки с шампанским остаются редко, люди считают помещенную ложку в бутылку продлеванием шипучести. В продолжении небольшой словарь о шампанском. Еxtra Brut: абсолютно сухое. Brut: особо сухое, с содержанием сахара 6 – 15 г/ литр. Sec: сухое. Demi sec: полусухое. Doux: сладкое. Cuvée: образуется после вторичного брожения перед дегоржированием. Дегоржирование: процесс удаления осадка, образованного на пробке бутылки с шампанским. Тиражный ликер: смесь сахара, дрожжей и неигристого шампанского вина, которая добавляется к базовому вину. Вторичное брожение: брожение в бутылках, получаемое в результате добавления тиражного ликера к базовому вину. Экспедиционный ликер: дозаж, используемый для подбора уровня сахара в шампанском, содержащий вино, сахар, коньяк и другие вкусовые добавки. ■

Wine Enthusiast, now includes Tokaj-Hegyalja as a prominent, world-class wine tourism destination. It is important to know that champagne bottles should be stored away from light and strong smells at a temperature of between 10 and 12 degrees. Before serving, it should be cooled to 8 or 9 degrees and, once opened, the bottle be placed in a champagne bucket filled with a mixture of chilled water and ice. Pay particular attention to the fact that the bottle should be covered with ice with only the neck protruding. The choice of glass is also of great importance. Champagne should be served in a champagne flute which characteristically has a tall stem, thin sides and a long narrow bowl. The bowl is designed to retain the carbonation and stops the bubbles from dissipating too rapidly during consumption. Champagne remains sparkling for much longer than most people expect. Scientists testing the length of time that champagne keeps its carbonation placed two identical open bottles side by side and suspended a spoon in one. The champagne in each bottle lost its sparkle at exactly the same rate and only became flat after approximately 96 hours! Since two bottles of champagne are rarely left open simultaneously, the longevity of the carbonation would probably be attributed to the spoon. Here follows a short champagne vocabulary. Extra Brut: very dry. Brut: particularly dry containing 6 to 15 grams of sugar. Sec: dry. Demi sec: half dry. Doux: sweet. Cuvée: in this type of champagne the secondary fermentation is carried out using a base wine previously produced by blending. Disgorgement: the removal of the lees on the cork in the neck of the bottle. Liqueur de tirage: this is added to the base wine prior to the process of the secondary fermentation and is produced by using sugar dissolved in wine or possibly in water or citric acid. Secondary fermentation: the process of fermenting the previously produced base wine after adding the sugar concentration. Liqueur de expedition: a special liquid used to determine the proper sweetness of the champagne, containing wine, sugar, distilled wine and other flavouring agents. ■

The Top Ten list of the most influential American specialist publication, Wine Enthusiast, now includes Tokaj-Hegyalja as a prominent, world-class wine tourism destination. According to Wine Enthusiast, the most enticing wine regions are (in order): Champagne, France; Veneto, Italy; Santa Barbara, California; Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand; Napa Valley, California; Colchagua Valley, Chile; Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary; Mosel Valley, Germany; Priorat-Cambrils, Spain; Six Wine Retreats in six different locations.

Дворы Гожду Название Дворы Гожду относится к имени румынского адвоката. Эманоил Гожду (Emanoil Gojdu) был богатым человеком, известным предпринимателем и меценатом. The complex under the name was designed by the famous architect Győző Czigler and built in 1901, almost 30 years after Gozsdu himself had passed away. The complex consists of 7 buildings and a passage formed by six interconnected courtyards, which once played a very important part in the life of the Jewish community. The first Jewish prayer houses were established here alongside different stores and shops. A lot has changed since, but Gozsdu Udvar, a small city within the city, is in bloom again. You can find a whole bunch of cafés, bars, restaurants, shops and clubs here, like Spíler, DiVino, Kolor, Blue Bird Café or Szomszéd, and also enjoy art exhibitions, fairs, concerts and other events all year long, so it’s always worth a visit. It is small wonder that Spíler in Gozsdu Udvar distinguishes itself as ruin pub 2.0 because it is teeming with novelties, adding a unique colour to the bar palette of Budapest. The interior might be over-eclectic and excessively crowded in places, but it is arguably original thanks
to street art andtrending design elements. The use of space is also varied, it is divided into a bar section, a courtyardand a restaurant. The music is great quality and devoid of clichés, the crowd is mixed, the prices are friendly. The gastronomical emphasis is on Hungarian craft beer and kenyérlángos - the latter is prepared on spot, in a wood-fueled stove. We’d like to recommend their hamburger especially, which is heavenly. Kolor is a trendy spot on the corner of Gozsdu Udvar and Király utca. One of the busiest bars ofdowntown Budapest awaits you with music to dance to on Fridays and Saturdays and something different on other days.The owner’s dedication to culture is something noteworthy: the profit from Kolor bar sustains side projects such as Vírus Klub, Vírus Pszicho and Kolor Kinema. The place is open from 9 am. till late night. They have a set lunch menu and cocktails with funny names. Удовольствие, получаемое в таком баре, не сравнимо ни с чем. Здесь можно получить удовольствие не только попивая хорошие коктейли и напитки, но и слушая отличную музыку. Здесь выступают интересные ансамбли и проводятся хорошие дискотеки. Руинные бары принадлежат разным владельцам, поэтому все они индивидуальны, работают не на основе франшизы. Интерьер их разнообразен. Например, в баре Симпла Керт (Szimpla Kert) можно попивать коктейль сидя в старой, разваленной автомашине Трабант, находясь в баре Instant вы, держа в руке стакан с палинкой, можете затеряться в лабиринте здания, ну а в баре Кертэм (Kertem) можно представить себя на открытой террасе пивного бара времен социализма. The beginning of the 21st century was an exciting turning point in the nightlife of Budapest: in the central area of the city new places were opened one after another in tenement houses and factory buildings doomed to destruction. These were equipped with rejected furniture of old community centres, cinemas, and grandmothers’ flats, bringing a retro feeling into these places. They were soon called ruinpubs and became popular very fast among the youth of Budapest - ruinpub is the exact translation of the Hungarian name. Ruinpubs often move to a new place, or close for some years, then open in a new place again. They are are not only good places to drink and have a party but also function as cultural community areas with film clubs, theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions, and creative workshops, too. They do not work in a franchise system, there is no specified design, and there are no rules, how to make them. Every place has a unique style and atmosphere. In Szimpla kert (Simple Garden) you can have a beer in a cannibalized old Trabant car. In Instant you can stroll around in the labyrinth of the tenement house. In Kertem (My Garden) you can feel the atmosphere of a socialist beer-garden of the 1980s. Getting to know Budapest by ruinpubs is like being guided here by a local friend.
