ABOUT ELENA Elena Zucchini graduated in 2010 with a Master's Degree from one of the finest music academies in the world, the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel. Described by Alberto Ponce as "the next rising star of the classical guitar world". Elena began her career focussing on Italian and contemporary repertoire and, in 2011, her first album was released containing music by Dyens, Scarlatti, Giuliani, Petrassi and Davidovsky. Growing up in rural Tuscany in Italy, Elena's passion for the guitar began as a child, listening to her uncle playing classical and flamenco music. This love affair with the instrument led her to study at conservatories in Perugia and Fermo where she was awarded numerous prizes, including twice receiving Fermo's Best Student of the Year award. Keen to learn as much as she could, she enrolled in masterclasses, playing for many of the world's finest guitarists, including David Russell, Stephan Schmidt, Claudio Marcotulli, Pavel Steidl, Alberto Ponce, Marco Socias, Jorge Cardoso, Roland Dyens, Fabio Zanon, Raphaella Smits and Marcello Rivelli, before finally auditioning at Basel for the Master's course in performance and musical interpretation, from which she graduated with distinction.
From 2010 to 2015 Elena managed, together with guitarist Stewart French, the record label Draft Audio Production, working with artists such as John Williams, Manchester Camerata, Les Violons du Roy and Marc-Andre Hamelin, Julian Lloyd Webber, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and “Clare College Choir of Cambridge”.
Together with flutist Claire Overbury, as Rouge Duo, Elena has been invited twice to perform at Jerusalem's British Consulate for the celebrations of Queen's Elizabeth birthday. For the last seven years Rouge has also been performing classical concerts for cruise ship companies Cunard and P&O. Elena collaborates with many Cuban artists including guitarist Ahmed Dickinson and percussionist Hammadi Valdés and is part of Obdara trio as both guitarist and singer. In the last few years she has been performing and teaching in various guitar festivals including “Campamento de guitarra de Arbeláez” in Colombia,“Festival de guitarra Identidades” in Cuba, “Guitar festival”in Belgium, “Guitar Festival Narbonne” in France and festival “Guitarrísimo” in London.
Elena currently lives in London where she balances a schedule of teaching, composition projects and performances, focussing mainly on Spanish, Cuban and Latin-American repertoire. Her most recent project is the collaboration with Cuban composer Walfrido Domínguez, culminating with a recording of Domínguez's solo work for guitar and a tour in Spain and France.
