LIVERPOOL LOVES SPORT
Our passion for football runs deep. With our many football teams in Merseyside – including Liverpool FC Men and Women, Everton FC Men and Women and Tranmere Rovers FC Men and Women – we love the game. However, world-class sport in the region goes far beyond football. Merseyside is the golfing capital of England – boasting more than 40 courses, seven of which are leading championship venues. We also have world champions training in our city, from the fields of gymnastics, boxing, athletics and more.
CELEBRATING A DECADE OF SPORT SCIENCE INTERNSHIPS WITH EVERTON FOOTBALL CLUB
It is also the UK home of the Grand National, the Liverpool International Horse Show and the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. Liverpool also annually hosts artistic gymnastics tournaments.
Every year around ten undergraduates in the final year of their degrees have the opportunity to work across the Everton Academy, alongside their academic studies, thanks to the thriving partnership between the club and the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences.
As many as 60 graduates from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences have secured roles at professional football clubs in England and overseas over the past decade thanks to an internship scheme with Everton Football Club.
Through the paid internship programme, students gain vital knowledge, skills, and experience within sports science and analytic roles at the Premier League football club. As a direct result of the internship partnership, more than 20 interns have been employed by Everton or secured roles in other professional clubs and organisations following the conclusion of their degree.
OUR HISTORY MEET OUR PIONEERS Professor Tom Reilly – Professor Tom Reilly was known as the ‘Godfather of the Science of Football’ and was also the UK’s first Professor of Sports Science. He was a key member of the team at Liverpool Polytechnic (now LJMU) that set up the world’s first BSc (Hons) degree in sports science in 1975. He was also the UK’s first Professor of Sports Science, and helped lay the foundations for sport and exercise scientific study at Liverpool Polytechnic, before it became known as LJMU. In recognition of Tom’s standing in the field of sport and exercise sciences, outstanding students nationally are awarded the Tom Reilly Doctoral Dissertation Award in partnership with the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES).
Irene Mabel Marsh – Irene Mabel Marsh founded the I.M. Marsh College of Physical Education and Sport, which dates back to 1900. The College moved to Barkhill Road in Mossley Hill between 1920 and 1929 and became known as LJMU’s I.M. Marsh campus in 1947. Irene Mabel Marsh started a revolution in physical education and demonstrated that girls should receive instruction in PE. Her legacy lives through LJMU’s innovative teacher training, PE and sport and exercise science teaching.

I aspire to work as a sport psychologist in elite sport, so this degree is an important step in that journey. The teaching support is very good. Lecturers link us to lots of useful resources, apps and websites, and you can always book time with them if you need help. What sets Football Science apart is how applied it is to the industry. We learn the same sport science fundamentals, but everything is tailored specifically to football. Our lecturers have worked in football clubs around the world, so they bring real industry experience into the course. My internship at Everton Academy has also given me experience across analysis, strength and conditioning and sports science, which has helped me discover which areas I enjoy most. Helena Segar Current Student, BSc Football Science
The practicals on the course have been engaging and enabled me, as a student, to visualise how things in my future career could plan out, rather than just reading about them. The teaching facilities at LJMU are excellent. For example the biomechanics labs are decked out top to floor with high-value, specialist equipment. Pierce Rich Student, BSc (Hons) Science and Football (Now BSc (Hons) Football Science) Member of LJMU’s American Football society
