3ES PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE
ABSOLUTE CHEMISTRY
Our 3Es public engagement utilises the research expertise of our academics and the knowledge and enthusiasm of our students to run projects that have a positive impact on our communities. We are running our first community volunteering project in collaboration with Skcin, a leading UK skin cancer awareness charity. Students are helping to deliver and roll out their Sun Safe Schools Accreditation to pupils from primary and secondary schools across Merseyside. Alongside our work with schools and young people, our researchers offer their expertise to help develop innovative solutions with public health and industry partners. We also offer training to non-medical prescribers and other healthcare professionals.
LJMU is one of four universities selected to take part in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) outreach programme, Absolute Chemistry. The project, which is funded by the RSC, involves working with local schools to widen participation in chemistry and raise pupil awareness of the varied range of careers in the subject.
Our Athena Swan Bronze Award recognises the School’s commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion.

I completed a foundation year at LJMU before progressing onto the degree. I particularly enjoy the many laboratory sessions associated with the course as they help to enhance my understanding of the topics. There is always help available if you ever need it, especially from the module leaders. I would like to go into drug design and research in the future – as the course deals with those topics it is ideal. Liam Kennedy BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science (now renamed BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science)
I enjoy the way the Pharmacy course involves different activities, such as labs, dispensing, simulations and placements. This makes it interesting and exciting. Saffiya Ahmad Current student, MPharm Pharmacy
I’ve always loved science and decided to go to LJMU due to the amazing links the university has to the NHS and other institutions – it is the perfect place for me. I did a hospital placement as part of my course. It gave me very good practical experience in a real NHS lab. I have met lots of new people there and I’m looking forward to working there full time. Jordan White Former student, BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science
LJMU was my first choice university due to its wide range of facilities and stories I heard from other students. I attended an LJMU Open Day and this made me choose the university. I would like to see myself working in a hospital in the future and being on the Applied Biomedical Science route has already given me this experience through a placement. Elizabeth Massen Former student, BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science
I have obtained experience in audio and video forensics as LJMU is the only university in Europe and one of few in the world that offers something like this. I have experience in Adobe Audition, Izotope RX8, Amped 5 and XRY giving me an extensive knowledge base within modern day policing. Hazel-Rose Cubbage BSc (Hons) Forensic Science and MSc Forensic Bioscience graduate
My tutors have always been approachable and eager to help, whether it’s through clearing up any doubts I have or providing additional explanations when concepts feel challenging. Their guidance has made the course material more manageable and has helped me feel more confident in my learning. Shabab Belal BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science
I enjoy the clinical aspects. Learning exactly how medicines work, their effects on the human body and seeing the real-world applications of what we study. It’s fascinating and incredibly rewarding. Ali Al Shammari Student, MPharm Pharmacy
