CAREERS IN POLICING The Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) has been introduced by the College of Policing and has minimum standards for qualifications, training and knowledge required by police officers of all ranks. There are three routes into policing...
1. (Pre-Join) Degree in Professional Policing Requires applicants to obtain the Degree in Professional Policing before being appointed as a police officer. This is the degree designed and endorsed by the College of Policing and mandated by them as the national standard, which will be delivered by universities that are ‘licensed’ by the College of Policing to deliver this degree programme. On completion the student will be awarded a BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Policing.
2. Degree Holder Entry Programme Those applicants who already hold an undergraduate degree, including a degree in Policing awarded by LJMU, can apply to their chosen police force. On appointment they will be required to complete a conversion course, which will provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary in their chosen profession. It is likely that the duration and content of this conversion course will vary according to the nature of the degree held.
3. Degree Apprenticeship Applicants will apply to their chosen police force and upon appointment will begin their three year degree apprenticeship. This will involve alternate periods of study in the university and time in their police force. During the apprenticeship period they will be ‘probationary’ police officers and on completion of their apprenticeship they will be confirmed in their appointment. The Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies offers the following degree apprenticeship programmes in collaboration with Merseyside Police.

LEGAL ADVICE CENTRE LJMU is one of the only places in UK where every LLB Law student can gain work experience as part of their degree from their first year onward. Under the supervision of LJMU staff (who are qualified solicitors) and practising lawyers from across the region who volunteer at the Centre, all LLB Law students can work in the law clinics in our Legal Advice Centre (LAC) during their degree.
What is a law clinic? Anyone with a legal problem who struggles to afford legal advice can request an appointment at our law clinic. The team give the legal advice the client needs, free of charge. Sometimes the LAC solicitors can take on a case and represent the client at a court hearing, with students working on the case too alongside the clinic team.
We work with communities to provide information about a particular legal issue that is affecting them, so they can be empowered to understand and enforce their rights themselves. We also engage in policy research looking at what impact the law is having and how problems might be solved.
We currently advise on issues relating to:
• Family • Civil litigation/ Small claims • Wills and Administration • Community Economic Development • Windrush Compensation Claims
Why do we have a law clinic? You might be surprised to know that millions of people with a legal issue may fall into poverty if they had to pay for legal protection. This means that the Legal Advice Centre is a valuable resource for the local community. Law is not only an academic subject to be studied and understood, but also a tool that can be used to protect or enforce rights. Learning by doing is important, and by working in the LAC over three years you will have a chance to apply in practice what you have learned in the classroom and see how the law operates in the real world.
What are the law clinic modules?
How the Legal Advice Centre helps your development The practical skills you learn, and the contribution you make to access to justice by studying the law clinic modules, are valuable whatever you decide to do with your degree.
What skills will I learn? Client interview and attendance notes/legal analysis I Case matter analysis I Research I Writing I Drafting I Communication and presentation I Group working I Using legal technology I Confidence These are skills you need in any career, though of course they are particularly useful if you decide to be a legal professional.
Level 4 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT Within this module, you will examine employability and personal development through personal development planning (PDP) and work-related learning (WRL) via the Legal Advice Centre. The module will provide opportunities to observe and engage in a variety of learning activities within a number of different settings and enable you to learn about professional conduct and legal ethics.
