GET LJMU READY 2026

IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE WE WELCOME YOU TO STUDY WITH US AT LJMU

Your time at university might just be the most exciting years of your life, full of learning new things, new experiences, opportunities and making new friends – we hope you’re ready!

This guide is designed to help you get prepared for your time at LJMU, once your place is confirmed. It includes information about what you need to do before you arrive, how to get the most out of your first few weeks, to finding support and help while you’re here.

ARE YOU THE PARENT OR A GUARDIAN OF A NEW LJMU STUDENT?

We have dedicated online resources for parents and guardians supporting a young person during their time at university. This includes useful hints for you as they start this new chapter in their life and some pointers about the challenges they may face during their first year. We also share how you can ensure they get the advice and support they need.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

What to do before you get on campus

MEET YOUR NEW FRIENDS ONLINE

Part of going to university, and especially for those moving into student accommodation, is learning to get along with new people. It is a great life skill and you will meet people from across the country, maybe even further afield. So why not reach out to your potential new pals before you arrive?

Download Campus Connect where we have groups set up so it’s easy to find others on your course, and if you’re moving into student accommodation you can find a group to meet others in your chosen halls.

There are also live events running throughout the summer so you can find out more about topics such as registration, finance and freshers events.

Check your emails for Campus Connect joining instructions!

Lots of our accommodation providers also have social media groups which you could join to meet your flatmates before moving in.

COMPLETE YOUR ONLINE STUDENT REGISTRATION

To become an official LJMU student you must complete your online registration on our My LJMU platform which involves activating your online account and uploading a photo for your student ID card. Check your emails for a message from the Student Registration team with instructions on how to get this sorted once your place is confirmed.

TRAINING TO KEEP YOU SAFE AT LJMU

After registration, we also expect you to complete some online training to help you understand what constitutes harassment, sexual misconduct and consent. Developing this understanding is vital in creating the safe, inclusive, and positive student experience we strive for here at LJMU. The ‘Harassment and sexual misconduct’ training modules can be found on your Canvas dashboard – your virtual learning environment where you will access information and materials relating to your course and eventually submit your assessments and coursework. More info about Canvas on p17. Please complete the online training prior to attending your first week of study, so that you can protect yourself and others.

VIEW YOUR INDUCTION TIMETABLE

Your induction timetable should be available online from mid-August and will have details about which LJMU buildings you need to go to during your first week, plus times, room numbers and the activities you must attend. At these introductory sessions you will meet your academic teaching and support team as well as other students on your course, discovering more about what and how you’ll be studying. Your programme and personal timetables will be available in September. Timetables:

Once you’ve applied for your funding it will say your payments are pending confirmation. Our Registry Services team will complete this confirmation task so that you are paid your student loan by Friday 18 September 2026.

CHANGED YOUR UNIVERSITY?

If you originally planned to attend a different university and had already applied for your funding, you will need to make sure your funding body knows you’re now coming to LJMU to avoid any delay in receiving your money.

You have until Friday 4 September 2026 to do this via your Student Finance account online.

LJMU SCHOLARSHIPS

Every year we award a range of scholarships, from £1,000 to £5,000 (that don’t need to be paid back), to encourage LJMU students to reach their potential. The good news is there’s still time to apply for a scholarship for this year.

APPLY FOR STUDENT FUNDING

It is essential to apply for your Student Finance now, if you haven’t already. View our guide to fees and funding for more help:

Applications close on Friday 28 August 2026 – apply through the Applicant Hub.

More info online:

Find out about our Money Advice team on p14 & 15.

MOVING INTO STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

If you are moving into LJMU approved student accommodation, you will be allocated a slot by the owner of your hall to move in on either Saturday 12 or Sunday 13 September 2026. Please do not make detailed travel arrangements such as booking flights, ferries or trains until your slot is confirmed. If you have any queries about moving into your accommodation, please contact your hall owner in the first instance.

On the day, staff from LJMU will be around to meet you and answer any queries alongside staff from your halls. Together we will ensure that your move runs as smoothly as possible.

We can also arrange an earlier move-in on Friday 11 September 2026 if you need it due to a medical condition or neurodiversity.

Email us to request an earlier move in: accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

As a general rule, if you can’t get all your belongings into the boot and back seat of a family car, you are probably bringing too much. Here’s what we think you’re going to need…

PAPERWORK AND ID DOCUMENTS

These will have been requested by your hall and us at LJMU - make sure to keep them safe.

BEDDING & TOWELS

Duvet and covers, pillows, sheets, and personal items like towels - but leave your mattress at home!

PANS, UTENSILS, CROCKERY AND CUTLERY

All our halls have basic appliances (like a cooker, fridge-freezer and a microwave), but you’ll have to bring your own crockery and cutlery. It’s a good idea to wait until you arrive to make larger purchases like a kettle so you don’t end up with too many in one flat.

ITEMS FOR YOUR BEDROOM

We want you to be able to personalise your space and make it feel like yours, but it’s important to remember that your hall bedroom may be

smaller than you are used to, especially if it has an en-suite bathroom - so pack smart!

TV LICENCE

Your flat may contain a communal TV and if so, the licence will have been purchased for it. You will need to buy a licence for any device that you bring, if you plan to watch or record live programmes. Get a TV licence here:

SHOP SUSTAINABLY

There are many discount stores in Liverpool city centre within easy walking distance of your accommodation where essential home items can also be purchased once you’ve moved in. We also recommend going to local charity or second-hand shops to purchase items at a reduced price - this will help you to save money and it’s better for the environment.

NOT YET SORTED YOUR ACCOMMODATION?

We guarantee accommodation to all our students, so even if you got your place through Clearing, or as an insurance choice, we’ve got you covered. All our accommodation is affordable and located in Liverpool city centre. Accommodation requests are done via the Applicant Hub Booking through LJMU guarantees you’re getting the best price, and means you’ll be living in the heart of Liverpool with other LJMU students.

Visit the Applicant Hub:

YOUR FIRST WEEK

Your first week as an LJMU student will focus on your academic introduction to the university – we call this your induction week. You’ll meet your programme team, those that will teach and support you during your degree studies, plus find out information on all the services offered by the university and your Students’ Union, JMSU.

Your first week is the perfect opportunity to find out where your classes will be and how long it will take to get from home to LJMU. You are expected to attend all the sessions outlined on your induction timetable, which should be available online from mid-August (scan the QR code on p5).

There will also be social and freshers activities that you can book through JMSU taking place across your first two weeks here, including the epic Freshers Fair. Their schedule of events will help you to get to know other new students and introduce you to some of the best things to do in the wonderful city of Liverpool.

More about JMSU at jmsu.co.uk

INTRODUCE YOURSELF!

You may have already met some people via Campus Connect, but make sure to say hi to people on your course, in your accommodation, and at freshers events.

FIND OUT WHERE YOU NEED TO GO

There’s a lot to take in and remember in your first week –everyone gets a little bit lost! Check our interactive map for building locations before you set off and don’t be afraid to ask staff for help.

KEEPING SAFE

We hope you will have an amazing experience studying here and getting to know the city if you are living here for the first time. Liverpool is a safe place and has Purple Flag status, which is awarded to places that promote the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Your safety is so important to us here at LJMU:

• The Student Life Building is open 24/7 with LJMU security staff always on site

• The university security team emergency phone number will be on the back of your student ID card if you need help on campus 0151 231 2222 and we would encourage you to download our SafeZone app which will give you quick access to the team at the touch of a button

• We have a university police officer, PC Martin Triggs, who you can speak to in confidence. He’s in the Student Life Building every Monday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 2pm, or you can email him martin.triggs@ merseyside.police.uk

Download the SafeZone app:

ZERO TOLERANCE FOR HARASSMENT AND SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

We recognise that incidents of harassment and sexual misconduct can unfortunately occur both within and beyond the university. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are committed to promoting a culture in which these incidents will be addressed. We have created an online guide of all the provisions in place to address harassment and sexual misconduct within our university community.

Read the online guide:

REPORT AND SUPPORT

We also have an online reporting tool called Report + Support so that any member of our university community can report incidents of harassment and sexual misconduct. Reports can be made anonymously (if no support is needed) or you can include your contact details so that our full range of support is available to you. The university has staff in place to respond to any reports, including our Specialist Support team who work with students who are experiencing sexual violence, domestic violence or stalking.

Report + Support platform:

ONLINE TRAINING REMINDER

To enable all of our students to enjoy their student experience in an atmosphere of mutual respect and ensuring zero tolerance of these issues, you are required to complete some online training before you arrive on campus. The ‘Harassment and sexual misconduct’ training can be found on your Canvas dashboard – your virtual learning environment accessed online or via the Canvas app.

GET VACCINATED

It’s important to look after your health when living away from home. Vaccinations are more important than ever in helping to protect yourself and our community. The following vaccinations are recommended for university students:

• Meningococcal ACWY (Meningitis ACWY) immunisation

• Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation

• Flu vaccination (for certain at-risk groups)

• HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccinations

MENB VACCINE

While the Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal infection known as MenA, MenC, MenW and MenY, it does not protect against MenB which was the cause of a 2026 outbreak linked to the University of Kent. From 20 July 2026, the MenB vaccine will be offered to teenagers and young people aged 24 or under who are starting university. You’ll be able to book an appointment through the NHS online or go to a walk-in vaccination site and get vaccinated without an appointment.

MENINGITIS SYMPTOMS

Early symptoms of meningitis can be similar to common illnesses such as flu or even a hangover, it’s easy to mistake meningitis for something else but it’s important that you get immediate help.

Get familiar with the symptoms in case you or a university friend becomes ill. The Meningitis Now website offers clear information on symptoms and how to get help:

REGISTER WITH DOCTOR

It’s vital that you register with a doctor, often referred to as a GP, as soon as your place at LJMU is confirmed. GPs are your first point of call for most health issues. If you are not from Liverpool, you can still see your own doctor when you go home.

If you wish, you can register now with Brownlow Health who have GPs in the city centre or at the Freshers Fair on Friday 18 September 2026:

If you prefer, you can search for other local GPs using the NHS online GP finder:

HAVE YOU SPENT TIME IN CARE?

If you have spent any time in the care system as a child or young person, you can get a wide range of support from our Inclusion Support team who help those who are care experienced or estranged from their families. They are the first point of contact for anything you need and they can also help you access additional funding through our Imagine Award bursary scheme.

The team will contact you in the first few weeks if they have your details. But if you are not sure they are aware of you or if your circumstances have recently changed, you should contact them.

Drop them an email: imagine@ljmu.ac.uk

FAITH SPACES AND GROUPS

We provide spaces for individual prayer, reflection and contemplation at key campus locations and we also have a team of chaplains from multiple faiths who are there to offer a helping hand. There are also a number of faith groups that you can join through the Students’ Union, JMSU.

More about faith spaces and groups:

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS

If you have a disability that affects your studies (for example a medical condition, Specific Learning Difficulty or neurodiverse or mental health condition) you can access additional academic support at LJMU. Most support will be funded by Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). Contact the Disability Advice team about applying for DSA before your course starts. If you are not eligible for DSA, we can still support you. You may get extra time in exams, dyslexia tutors, mental health support, mobility assistance or help with note taking.

The team can help you throughout your time at LJMU. Contact them by phone 0151 231 3168 or email disability@ljmu. ac.uk - any information you disclose will remain confidential and your support needs will not be discussed with anyone without your consent.

Managing your money as a student can be challenging. Unexpected costs, navigating your transition into university life and budgeting for yourself, perhaps for the first time, can be a source of worry. That’s where the Money Advice team can help. They provide information, advice and guidance relating to your student funding as well as helping you manage your personal finances like setting up a budget or student bank account.

You can arrange an appointment with an advisor anytime during your time at LJMU, as outlined on p10.

MONEY ADVICE

SUPPORT WITH THE COST OF LIVING

The Money Advice team offer professional, friendly, non-judgmental support to help if you are facing financial hardship or just need some financial assistance. They can help you cover the cost of things like food, energy bills or your rent, through our Student Support Fund.

Apply for help through the fund:

20% OFF AT CORE CAFES

You can use your student ID card to get 20% off at all Core Cafes on campus, and if you download the sustainability app ‘Too Good to Go’ you can get access to £12 worth of food for £4 from our cafes at the end of each day, while stocks last.

STUDENT DISCOUNTS

HOME ESSENTIALS GIVEAWAYS AND FOOD VOUCHERS

Throughout the year the team often give out home essentials items to students, like laundry detergent, washing up liquid and shower gel. They also provide food vouchers during special events on campus alongside JMSU. Events will be advertised through your email student newsletter and on the main LJMU and Student Life, Advice and Wellbeing’s Instagram, so be sure to check your inbox regularly and give the accounts a follow online.

You might also want to sign up to discount platforms like UNiDAYS, Totum or Student Beans (other discount platforms may also be available) to make the most of your student status with money off in shops, restaurants, travel, and lots more. But remember that discounts only save you money if you need the thing in the first place and only buy it if you can really afford it.

MANAGING YOUR STUDENT FINANCE PAYMENTS

Many students run out of money as they never actually work out how much money they have per week. If you receive student finance, this will be paid to you in three large and equal instalments. The good news is that if you

Visit our student homepage to find specialised help and support, no matter what you need:

are living in LJMU approved student accommodation, you pay your rent in three instalments too. Once you have paid your rent for the term and worked out how much you have each week, consider moving it to another bank account, or draw out the cash, and use that. Working out your money weekly is so much easier than termly. You can get assistance in setting a budget up for the semester or year, just book an appointment with one of our Money Advisor’s.

SANTANDER STUDENT SUPPORT FUNDS

We’ve teamed up with Santander who offer grants, scholarships and financial awards to our students. Look out for promotion of our Brighter Futures opportunities through our student newsletter emails and on LJMU’s Instagram throughout the academic year.

LIBRARIES, ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND IT SERVICES

Making the jump to a degree can feel like a leap to anyone. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Students come from all different academic backgrounds and understanding how to get the most out of your degree can feel like a module in itself! There are a few things to remember as you settle in to university life...

THE PACE OF CONTENT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO ADJUST TO INITIALLY

You will be in a new environment, discovering your new way of life (in a new city for many), and it might feel like you have an overwhelming amount of work to do or understand at first.

YOUR WORKLOAD IS LIKELY TO GROW FROM YOUR PREVIOUS STUDY EXPERIENCE

You will be expected to do lots of independent studying through reading different sections of books, articles, watching videos, listening to podcasts, or spending time in labs or doing experiments. Balancing the social side of university and putting in the independent study hours needed to get a good degree is a skill you will need to develop.

YOU WILL COME ACROSS LOTS OF COMPLEX NEW TERMINOLOGY

Harvard referencing? Quantitative studies? Literature review? It can all feel a bit alien and like you are expected to know what some call ‘university basics’.

Thankfully, there’s a wide range of academic and IT support available at LJMU to help you thrive. From the moment you arrive, you’ll have access to the library’s Academic Success team, based in both of our Mount Pleasant Campus and City

Campus Libraries. This approachable, professional, and dedicated team is here to help you make the most of your studies. They can advise and support you with a range of academic and library skills from clarifying assessment expectations, essay writing and referencing to finding the resources you need.

Your Personal Tutor is also there to help guide you through your academic life at LJMU. Personal Tutors are staff from your area of study who are there to support your success, like providing guidance on course and social issues, making sense of assessment feedback and referring you to the correct teams to best support you.

And we have a dedicated IT Services team available to help you throughout your time at LJMU with support available in-person, online or by phone. Whether it’s installing software, help with your IT account or accessing high performance computers, the team have got you covered.

Come and see the team inperson on the upper ground floor of the Student Life Building which is also home to the Digital Studio, where you can access 3D printing, loan Virtual Reality headsets or use our podcasting facilities.

More about IT support:

Students get five licences for Microsoft Office 365 so there’s no need to purchase your own copy. This includes 1TB of OneDrive storage.

MOUNT PLEASANT CAMPUS LIBRARY REFURBISHMENT

From January to September 2027, our Mount Pleasant Campus Library will be closed for an exciting refurbishment. ‘Pop-up’ Library and Academic Success support will be available throughout this closure period and we’ll share more information about this in autumn 2026.

DID YOU KNOW...

That we have loan laptops you can borrow and take home? These can be accessed at multiple sites across campus, and you can also logon to a PC in most buildings.

With the MyLJMU app you can access your personal timetable, email, Canvas and your assessment results along with lots of other essential LJMU services and resources. Our free Wi-Fi Eduroam is available in all LJMU buildings to keep all your devices online no matter where you are on campus.

WANT TO FEEL MORE PREPARED?

Do our ‘Skills for Success’ online course

This short online course, is designed to help you build the key skills and knowledge you’ll need for transitioning into higher education.

You can find the course by going to your MyLJMU account and clicking on Canvas. Canvas is our virtual learning environment where you will find lecture or seminar materials, receive updates from your lecturers, and the place where you will submit your assignments. From the course you can expect:

• A simple introduction about how university learning works, including tips for independent study

• An overview of the different types of assessments you might be asked to do

• Essential digital skills, including how to use tools and software like Microsoft Office plus a short introduction to AI and how to use it responsibly

• A walkthrough of Canvas itself, so you can confidently navigate the virtual learning environment

• Practical guidance on managing your wellbeing whilst studying

The course helps you build strong foundations, so you can start your journey with confidence.

OTHER LJMU GUIDES

We are currently in the process of creating tailored guides for different communities here at LJMU, ensuring all students can access support and spaces that speak to their experiences and help them thrive at university. Our first guide is the Black Experience Guide, bringing together insights, experiences, and recommendations from Black students and staff. Look out for more guides as we release them throughout the year.

Read the Black Experience Guide:

We can’t wait for you to get here, but in the meantime get to know every inch of the city and some of the things you might like to do during your time as an LJMU student.

1

CITY CENTRE

Liverpool city centre, known locally as ‘Town’, is like something out of a moviebecause it is! From The Batman to Peaky Blinders our streets make for a stunning backdrop, filled with more Grade 1 listed buildings and national museums and galleries than any UK city outside of London. And with loads of bars, shops and restaurants, it’s more than just a pretty face.

3

ROPEWALKS

Getting the name from its past life as the city’s centre for rope manufacturing, the cobbled area between Duke Street and Bold Street is still considered to be the epicentre for Liverpool’s nightlife and restaurants with it’s central Concert Square a freshers rite of passage.

2

BALTIC TRIANGLE

New York has Brooklyn, London has Shoreditch and Liverpool has the Baltic Triangle. Home to incredible music venues, club nights, and BOXPARK Liverpool, you’ll find independent coffee shops and breweries, street food and vintage markets all in one postcode.

GEORGIAN QUARTER

If you want a cathedralwe’ve got one to spare! Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter is bookended by the two cathedrals heading up either end of Hope Street. But there’s more to this area than just elegant Georgian architecture. Get lost in its public parks, cram in the culture at its two theatres, or spend a day wining and dining across loads of great places to eat and a traditional English pub scene.

KNOWLEDGE QUARTER

They call the top end of town the Knowledge Quarter. Nestled in beside LJMU and the University of Liverpool, the walkways that link our two universities are a mix of Victorian gothic and 60s modernism alongside hitech new centres of learning. This is where great things happen.

WATERFRONT

Home to Everton FC’s new stadium, our iconic Mersey waterfront offers everything from a sing-along in The Beatles Story to a picturesque, if a little windy, riverside stroll. Catch a concert in our arena, take a tour of our famous Liver Building or check out Turner Prize winning contemporary art - try finding more culture and history per square inch elsewhere! 4 5 6 7

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT

Liverpool’s business district is filled with ornate banking halls, lofty skyscrapers and eyecatching late 19th century office buildings. Got a head for heights? Try dining at one of our penthouse restaurants or hunt out a secret roof garden.
