“For me, the holidays begin the moment the tree goes up. There’s something grounding about the process—unboxing each ornament, finding balance in the lights, and stepping back to take it all in. It’s simple, but it sets the tone for the season and brings a calm I look forward to every year.”

“My family goes to a farm every year to cut down our own Christmas tree. We usually spend a half hour or so bickering about which tree is best before we can reach a decision, then my dad and husband take turns lying on the ground sawing while my mom, sister and I take photos of them sweating and swearing. Merry Christmas!”

Holiday Happiness
Dear readers,
As we leave autumn behind and embrace the holiday season, I can’t help but reflect on how quickly this year has flown by and how far we’ve come together. The past two months have been lively and eventful, filled with celebration, planning and collaboration.
We had the privilege of being media sponsors for several amazing events that support worthy causes, including Breast Cancer Canada’s Pink Door Gala, Freda’s Fall Fashion for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Shelter Movers’ A Moving Affair Gala, the Arthritis Fire Ball gala, Porridge for Parkinson’s, Autism in Mind’s Dream Beyond Limits Gala and Fashion Art Toronto. We also had the honour of attending the Canadian Opera and the Dinner Gala with Rita Tesolin, each occasion a reminder of the power of coming together as a community.
On October 16, we hosted Luxe After Dark, our unforgettable client appreciation event that welcomed more than 700 guests from the design and build community. Together, we celebrated our shared passion for creativity, our everlasting friendships, and our ongoing shared success. I feel honoured to be part of such an inspiring community, filled with heart, laughter and spirit. To relive the magic of the evening, scan the QR code below and watch the night unfold.
Following that amazing evening, our Living Luxe team took a moment to celebrate together at Casa Loma’s Legends of Horror. It was the perfect way to unwind, connect, and have some well-deserved fun. We’ve also been delighted to collaborate with Amber Walker Events on creating the Christmas Tree at Casa Loma, a festive project that captures the spirit of the season. Speaking of Liberty Group’s venues, congratulations to our friends Nick and Nadia Di Donato for the launch of Powder Room in Yorkville!
As the year draws to a close, our excitement is building for the Living Luxe Design Show 2026. We’re working hard to make next year’s exhibition even more inspiring, and I’m thrilled to share some exciting announcements. Our five judges for the Living Luxe Award Show 2026 are Lorne Rose, Jane Lockhart, Nadia Di Donato, George Sully, and Steven Sabados. Amber Walker Events will serve as our 2026 show director, with Faulhaber Agency leading public relations. We’re looking forward to an exceptional collaboration and can’t wait for you to be part of it.
To all our readers, partners, and friends, thank you for making 2025 an unforgettable year. Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a very happy New Year. I look forward to hearing about your celebrations and reconnecting in 2026.

Making Magic
Dear Reader,
When I was a child, the holidays were my favourite time of year. I remember lying under the Christmas tree, watching the light dance across the ornaments, each one handmade or carrying its own memories from Christmases past. I remember chaotic dinners with my huge extended family, the smell of my grandmother’s baked fruit and turkey wafting into the living room where we cousins searched under the tree for gifts with our names on them. I remember the feeling of giddy excitement while waiting at the top of the stairs to see if Santa Claus had come, eager to read the letter he always wrote to us.
My mother was at the centre of most of our Christmas magic when I was growing up, delightedly dancing along to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite in the living room, turning the entire house into a winter wonderland. She’d load us into the car for any number of outings—from picking out the best Christmas tree in the lot to finding the most dazzling lights in the neighbourhood. Through the years, she has kept so many traditions alive for my brother and me, though we are well into adulthood. Every year, you’ll find her belting out Christmas hymns at Christmas Eve service at my grandmother’s church, shopping for an ornament for each of us that embodies our year, and wrapping up new pajamas to open on the 24th. To me, she is Christmas, the heart of what makes it special.
Women are so often the magic keepers of a household, the forces behind lights with just the right amount of twinkle, Santa having cookies when he comes down the chimney, and beautifully wrapped presents beneath the tree. As children, we don’t often think of the “how;” we’re too focused on the “now” for much else. Nowadays, I realize that magic is something we have to make. And, between work, gatherings, last-minute shopping and travel, making magic often feels like a daunting task to me.
Sometimes I wonder how my mother—perpetually a bit frazzled and not much of a planner—was able to pull off bringing so much holiday magic to our home amid all the chaos of life. Then I think that, perhaps, making magic is less about perfectly planned grocery lists and curated Christmas trees, and more about showing up. Now, I realize how many other things must have been on the mind of my mother—a single mom struggling to make ends meet—as she twirled to The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy and belted out Angels We Have Heard on High, and I think maybe just being there is what makes magic. Not perfection, but setting aside our own worries to be present among those we love, with joy and gratitude in our hearts. In finding delight in all that the season has to offer and enjoying every minute of it while it lasts. Those things have a way of spreading, after all.
Whatever the magic looks like in your home, I hope you are surrounded by loved ones. Wishing you and yours a happy, safe and peaceful holiday season from all of us at Living Luxe.
Cheers, Elia Essen Editor-In-Chief

THE EVOLUTION OF QUIET LUXURY
How Toronto brand SENTALER is making outerwear an elevated experience.
By Sasha Reid-Dempster

SENTALER has become a modern emblem of understated refinement, where architectural silhoue es, sumptuous textiles and quiet strength intertwine. “When I design, I think deeply about the person wearing each piece; how they move, how they live, what makes them feel powerful,” says SENTALER
Founder Bojana Sentaler. “Every seam, every silhoue e, is considered with that in mind. Each piece becomes part of their story. When someone slips into a SENTALER coat, I want them to feel composed, empowered and at ease.”

Timeless elegance, feminine strength and architectural cra smanship are the foundation of everything this designer creates. In the Fall/Winter 2025/26 collection, Sentaler explores the dialogue between heritage and moderni through a prepcore lens.

“ e collection introduces sculpted maxi coats, refined topcoats and hyper-textured shearling pieces—all designed with a meticulous eye for proportion and movement,” Sentaler explains. “It’s about cra ing garments that feel enduring yet distinctly of the moment; luxury that’s intentional and deeply personal.” In each piece, colour is carefully considered, whether it’s a bold hue or something more understated. “Colour has always been the soul of every SENTALER collection—it’s where my design process begins,” says Sentaler. “For FW25, I was drawn to an unexpected yet deeply harmonious pale e: cherry lacquer, sea kelp and dark mulberry, so ened by blush pink, camel and glacial blue. Each tone carries its own quiet emotion, anchored by the timeless strength of grey.”
Looking ahead, the brand is poised to reach new heights,

ELEVATED BEAUTY
From what to expect to which technique is best, here’s everything you should know about getting a facelift.
For decades, people have turned to facelifts to create a lifted, youthful look—and with good reason. It’s one of the most effective procedures for reversing signs of aging. But what exactly does a facelift entail and how do you know what type is right for you? Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeon, practising Facial Plastic Surgery in Toronto, tells us everything you should know about getting a facelift
By Dr. Philip Solomon & Nancie Heiber
Living Luxe Magazine (LL): So, what exactly is a facelift?
Dr. Philip Solomon (PS): A facelift, medically referred to as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to diminish visible signs of facial aging. It addresses concerns such as skin laxity in the mid-face and jawline, as well as the presence of deep folds and wrinkles. This is achieved through the precise tightening of underlying tissues, removal of excess skin, and strategic repositioning of fat and muscle layers. Facelift surgery may be performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia, typically allowing patients to return home the same day. The procedure is highly effective, often rejuvenating a patient’s appearance to resemble how they looked 10 to 15 years prior.
LL: What areas of the face does a facelift typically target—and what does it not address?
PS: A facelift primarily targets the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. Although several surgical techniques exist, my preferred approach is the deep plane facelift, as it consistently delivers the most comprehensive and natural results. This technique enables the repositioning of the skin,

subcutaneous fat, and superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) as a unified layer, allowing for the careful release of deeper attachments around key facial ligaments. By doing so, it achieves a more effective elevation of sagging cheeks, nasolabial folds, jowls, and the jawline, while permitting skin closure under minimal or no tension—significantly reducing the risk of visible scarring.
It is important to note that a facelift does not address concerns such as eyelid hooding, under-eye bags, brow position, nasal shape, chin projection, or overall skin quality. For patients seeking a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation, we frequently combine facelift surgery with complementary procedures such as blepharoplasty, brow lift, CO₂ laser resurfacing, fat grafting, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentation.
LL: What exactly are the different facelift techniques?
PS: The key distinctions between traditional, mini and deepplane facelifts lie in the extent of tissue dissection, the specific anatomical layers addressed, the incision length and the degree of rejuvenation achieved. A traditional facelift typically utilizes the SMAS technique. In this approach, the skin and underlying muscular layer are elevated and tightened separately.
A mini facelift in my practice utilizes the deep-plane approach but through a shorter incision, therefore providing a more limited correction, focusing primarily on the midface, jawline, and—to a lesser extent—the submental region, without fully addressing neck laxity. This technique is best suited for patients in their 30s to late 40s, depending on their unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.
A full deep-plane facelift, in my opinion, represents the most advanced and natural method for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Having performed both traditional and deep-plane facelifts for over 25 years, I have consistently found the deep-plane technique to yield superior, longer-lasting, and more natural results compared to the traditional approach
LL: What are the most common concerns or misconceptions patients have before surgery?
PS: The most common concern among patients is the fear of looking unnatural. Most individuals wish to maintain a natural appearance while achieving a more youthful, defined look. It’s also common to feel some anxiety leading up to surgery—whether about the procedure itself, the recovery process, or pain management. Many patients also worry about how long they’ll need to take off work or stay out of the public eye. However, once the day of surgery arrives, most patients find that their anxiety quickly fades. Many report that the entire experience is far more comfortable and
manageable than they had anticipated. Most patients are delighted with their results, typically return to their normal routines within two weeks, and feel confident socializing again by around four weeks—though recovery time can vary from person to person.
LL: How long do facelift results typically last, and what factors affect their longevity?
PS: While a facelift procedure can effectively reset the clock, the natural aging process continues thereafter. The longevity and quality of the results are influenced by several factors, including genetics, lifestyle habits and environmental exposure. Patients who maintain a healthy lifestyle—eating well, exercising regularly, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and refraining from smoking— tend to preserve their results longer and continue to age gracefully.
LL: How can patients prepare emotionally and physically for a facelift?
PS: Preparing both emotionally and physically is essential for a successful facelift experience. A strong support system of calm, reassuring individuals can be invaluable throughout the recovery process, helping patients feel comfortable and supported. Equally important is adherence to pre- and postoperative instructions, which provide guidance on activities, medications, and lifestyle considerations to optimize healing and ensure the best possible outcome.

THE PRICE OF FAME
As
designer Hilary Farr considers what’s next, she looks to the past—and her 15 years hosting television’s Love It or List It—as a reminder of what’s important.
By Hilary Farr
I’ve been thinking about how I got where I am and what is best about it. As this year comes to its end, it feels right to think about the next chapter of my life. And that, of course, means a rehash of the last chapter, too. In the 15 years I hosted Love It or List It, the dips and curves of my life took me through divorce, my son getting married, true love, cancer, lost love, the loss of my dog, a new dog and cat, grandchildren, new friends, lost friends and so much more. Through good times and bad, I know how lucky I am. But I wonder what it all adds up to and what my next chapter will be. So, right now, looking back is what I do.
When I was in the middle of my divorce almost 20 years ago, the toxicity of the process was horrible. The emotional and financial impact of a divorce is unimaginable. Thankfully, I had my build-and-design company, and it saved me. My clients trusted me to create their dream homes, a big responsibility that forced me to flip my brain from stress, anger and sadness to a place of beauty, empathy and imagination. Every time a project was completed, it brought me joy. That is how I survived and thrived.

The divorce was still dragging on in 2008 when I was chosen to host a new TV show, Love it or List it. The learning curve was extreme. I knew nothing about television, and there were so many embarrassing moments, crazy choices and mistakes. Lesson number one: Remember you have a live mic on because every word you utter can be heard by everyone—including the person signing your paycheck. It’s hilarious and humbling to look back on the early days. I leaned heavily on my smart and talented team to guide me.
The first 100 episodes were filmed mostly in Toronto. Our budgets were very tight, making designs a challenge. I wanted to create grand spaces but needed back up. It’s impossible to create magic without leaning on a precious few who have the vision to understand your ideas. One of the standouts was Kevin Brooks and his family business, Latitude Countertops. From day one, he brought me the latest and greatest materials and perfect installations, so that our kitchens were spectacular no matter the budget. He is a hero of mine for developing the Latitude OFFCUTS program, salvaging materials to be reused
rather than end up in a landfill. That’s where I found the huge marble slab for my kitchen island and backsplash. Fifteen years later and we still swoon over material and ideas, and he is one of my closest friends.
Amid so much turmoil in the world, I’ve often wondered if what I do is frivolous and meaningless. And then, someone stops me to say that watching the show helped them get through some awful life crisis. It’s a reminder that meaning can be found in many places.
At the risk of sounding preachy, celebrity is a fun ride but it’s also a platform, a gift to help shine a light on charities and foundations that do wonderful work for this world.
So, my next chapter will be interesting, with more time to think about how I want to spend the next 20 years, and then making it happen. My friends and supporters will be with me for the ride. I have worked hard to be where I am. Celebrity wasn’t the goal; it was the result. Fame should be earned, and then used well.

CULTIVATING GRATITUDE
Celebrated abstract-modernist artist Pietro Adamo finds luxury all around him, from the pursuit of creative passions to the support of a loving family.
Living Luxe Magazine (LL): What does living luxuriously mean to you?
Pietro Adamo (PA): The ultimate luxury is being able to choose what to do with your time. To that end, I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue a passion that has made me feel as if my time has been spent wisely. Painting continues to intrigue me, compel me and challenge me. The luxury to express yourself as a career choice can never be understated. The quiet of the studio in the early morning with the allure of a blank canvas never gets old.
LL: How does luxury and extravagance factor into your work?
PA: I have been drawn to elaborate textures and saturated colours and patterns in much of my art. My interest has always
been in the complexity and intricacy of nature. Even when I choose “less is more,” the tendency will always be towards the richness or underlying sophistication of what seemingly appears simplistic at first glance. There is always more than meets the eye. In much of the figurative work, rich texture and colour is often used to help define the sequence of actions, and sometimes the personality of the subject. At times, the entire process can lead down a completely different path and I find myself exploring everything from Baroque extravagance to Bauhaus austerity within the same piece. The composition may be restrained and minimal at conception, but in the end, the resulting imagery may have taken the high road! I reserve the right to allow my art to take me wherever it needs to go. Recently, it has taken me to Queen’s Park, with two pieces acquired by the Ontario Art Archives. For that I am humbly grateful.
LL: What plays a role in allowing you to live your best life?
PA: I have been able to live my best life because of the support of a loving family. Erica and I have been blessed with two children

and five grandchildren. It is not an exaggeration to say that family has been central in bringing out the best in my painting over the years. Sorry—no stories or great dramas about having had to suffer for my art. Whenever the pressure to create raised its head, a brisk walk through the McMichael [Canadian Art Collection] grounds and an espresso at a local cafe would calm the nerves. Golf would take care of the rest. Gratitude and happiness are acquired tastes by choice. I’ve been blessed to have cultivated a palate.
LL: What objects do you surround yourself with to inspire and support your everyday growth and why?
PA: My studio is adorned with a collection by the following modern masters: Adamo, Stefano, Mila, Matteo and Andrea Francesco (ages 18 months to eight years old). I derive incredible inspiration from their mixed media creations. They complete Nonno’s studio! Background music ranges from Puccini to The Beaches—it’s all good, and it helps summon the muse. The lyrics from Lucky Man by the Verve in disc form hang just outside my door. It was a gift from my daughter to remind me of how fortunate I am to be doing what I do. Indeed, I am a lucky man, with fire in my hand.
LL: How important is it to you to refresh and revitalize either your work or yourself?
PA: Success as an artist depends on constant review and renewal. It has and always will reflect a state of mind, body and spirit. Experiences, travel, relationships, deeply held convictions along with fear and elation—all of this will eventually seep into the artist’s imagery. A dear mentor once said to me that in art, “no clothing can cover your soul.” With that in mind, every artist should approach with absolute abandon and absolute joy in the process. The other piece of wisdom I have to offer comes from a friend who has been in the business of art since the ’80s: “There’s only one way to deal with a creative block: work through it. Throw out all the unsuccessful pieces; you’ll be surprised at how many you’ll keep— and how many will sell!” Renewal and revitalization can come through a change of scenery as big as crossing oceans or as simple as a walk in the autumn air. The key is to know that change is not the enemy; stagnation is.
LL: What would you tell others about living their most luxurious life and how they can strive to be their personal best?
PA: Living the luxurious life is about identifying what is precious to you and providing space and time for it in your life. When you are done chasing yachts and Lamborghinis, and if that’s still not enough, you might want to revisit the final thoughts on life provided by the late great Steve Jobs: “True luxury was never about ‘stuff.’”

TORONTO’S ENDURING TASTE FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL
By Jeremy Gladstone
e past few years have challenged Toronto’s real estate market. Prices wavered, projects paused, and confidence was tested. Yet beneath the uncertain , the ci ’s appreciation for cra smanship has not only survived but matured. e finest things in life are not defined by extravagance but by integri . Across the ci , projects that celebrate permanence, design and art continue to set the pace, many of which our team has the privilege of shaping. Toronto still values what is made with care, and that is precisely where the future of luxury lives.

A FINAL MASTERPIECE IN THE HEART OF YORKVILLE
At Avenue Road and Cumberland stands a residence that defines Toronto’s highest expression of private living, Yorkville Private Estates. e sub-penthouse is a singular work of art, priced at $18 million, curated with another $18 million worth of art from addaeus Ropac Gallery in Paris, and outfi ed with custom designed furniture from Studio Liaigre in Paris. Every surface, sightline and service detail was considered. Sweeping ci views frame bespoke interiors, while the atmosphere evokes calm, discretion and timeless sophistication. Only one suite remains, a final opportuni to own within Toronto’s most exclusive address. Having been deeply involved with the branding and marketing of this masterpiece, it is evident that this is a sanctuary for those who demand nothing less than the extraordinary. Yorkville Private Estates represents the pinnacle of private, full-service condominium living in the heart of Toronto’s most storied neighbourhood.

QUIET LUXURY, LASTING LEGACY
In Toronto’s coveted Rosedale neighbourhood, Devron Developments and Dorsay Developments are creating 1 Marlborough, a residence defined by grace, cra smanship, and an enduring sense of place. We are currently developing the brand and communications platform for this landmark address, ensuring every touchpoint reflects its architectural integri and Rosedale neighbourhood heritage. Designed by Gianpiero Pugliese of Audax, the architecture is timeless, the interiors carefully considered, and the scale intimate. Created for longtime residents and emp nesters who value walkabili and belonging, 1 Marlborough o ers a quieter interpretation of luxury. It celebrates permanence over novel and cra smanship over excess, a philosophy that feels perfectly at home in Rosedale’s tree-lined streets and historic charm.
Toronto’s luxury market may have so ened at the edges, but its soul remains strong. e ci still knows how to recognize quali when it sees it, and for those who create with intention, it remains one of the most rewarding places.
ITALIAN REFINEMENT, TORONTO SOUL
Inside e Ritz-Carlton, Lano captures the e ortless rhythm of Northern Italy. It blends the tactile charm of Milanese design with Toronto’s modern sensibili . e name, derived from Milano, reflects a balance of refinement and ease. Mornings bring espresso and pastries, a ernoons invite conversation, and evenings linger with wine and small plates. Every detail, from tone to texture, was cra ed to make Lano feel familiar yet rare. In our early creative explorations, the goal was clear: to create an aesthetic that reminds Toronto what elegance looks like when it is confident enough not to try too hard.

Chances are there is more than one person on your holiday shopping list who appreciates a fine Scotch. Same goes for those who are racing fans or who covet luxury sports car brands. Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single-malt Scotch whisky brand, has just provided the perfect gift: two limited-edition bottlings to celebrate its partnership with Aston Martin Formula One™ Team. And each epitomizes the best of both worlds.
“At Glenfiddich, we’ve always strived to create exceptional whiskies that stand the test of time,” says Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich Malt Master, whose discerning palate ensures every product meets very high-quality standards. “The Glenfiddich 16-Year-Old and 19-Year-Old are no exception.”
Though the worlds of whisky-making and Formula One may seem far apart, the whiskies celebrate values shared by both. Kinsman says they are a testament to craftsmanship, precision and passion. “Each bottle tells a story of innovation, yet is rooted in the tradition of excellence that we’ve upheld since 1887,” he says. For its part, Aston Martin Formula One™ Team embodies performance shaped by the interplay of craft and human instinct. In partnering with Glenfiddich, magic happens as skill meets intuition, and the resulting products are as inspiring as they are exceptional.
Tasting the 16-Year-Old bottling, Kinsman calls it “smooth, bold and timeless.” The exquisite whisky is carefully matured in a combination of American oak wine casks, pristine new American barrels and seasoned second-fill bourbon casks. The result: a
harmonious blend that delights the nose with rich, warm notes of maple syrup and caramelized ginger. Then the palate savours a silky wave of fresh fruit and a hint of Chantilly cream, with a bold finish that lingers. Evoking the comfort and nostalgia of festive flavours, every sip is a celebration.
For a present that radiates luxury and depth, the 19-Year-Old is matured in hand-selected American and European oak casks and is available exclusively at select global duty-free locations— making it a rare treasure for connoisseurs. The influence of Montilla wine casks imparts a sweet spice, while vibrant Seville orange notes illuminate the whisky’s warm, woody undertones. This masterpiece is a testament to pushing the boundaries of complexity and refinement: layered, radiant and demanding to be savoured slowly. Gifting this bottle means sharing an experience that invites contemplation and appreciation, perfect for holiday gatherings where stories and memories are exchanged.
Bestowing one of these exquisite whiskies just might prove the highlight of your holiday gifting. They distill the artistry and 137-year tradition of Glenfiddich and the precision and forwardthinking spirit of Aston Martin Formula One™ Team for a present that is sure to be cherished and remembered for years to come. And you might consider gifting yourself with one of the limited-edition bottles. For whether sipped solo by the fire or shared at a festive gathering, these spirits are sure to create many memorable moments.

PRACTICAL MAKES PERFECT
Engineer-turned-designer Maryam Alavinasab creates functional and fabulous custom spaces through her design, build and furniture company, M&M Interior Design.
By Alyssa Hirose

Maryam Alavinasab had all the education she needed to make it as an industrial mechanical engineer when she landed in Ontario seven years ago. She’d completed her master’s degree in Iran and was set to embark on a promising career in Canada. But as Alavinasab reflects on that time, she admits that her heart pulled her in another direction: “I decided to follow my real passion, design.”
Alavinasab was naturally design-minded (“As a child, I was always very sensitive to colour, shape and how space makes people feel,” she says), and rather than seeing her engineering degree as a detour, she used it to her advantage. “I have a good eye for beauty, and at the same time, a technical understanding,” she explains. After earning her design diploma, she collaborated with multiple business partners to found Richmond Hill-based M&M Interior Design in 2021.
M&M combines its founders’ practical education with long-lasting materials and gorgeous furnishings, creating spaces that are comfortable and customized, but never boring.
“Canada is an amazing country full of cultural diversity and creative potential, but I believe it’s still quite conservative when it comes to design,” Alavinasab says. “Many people are hesitant to take bold steps or try something new, and I want to change that.”
Each of the studio’s residential projects has stunning standout elements: think high-contrast glossy marble fireplaces, cozy oversized sofas, perfectly lit wine storage and eye-catching art. “My designs are always about what I call ‘bold serenity,’ ” Alavinasab says. “It feels powerful but never overwhelming; luxurious, but deeply personal.” She explains that luxury, to her, is more about a feeling than a price tag— her goal is to make luxury spaces that are warm, soulful and connected to who we are.
Lately, M&M has also been thriving in the commercial wellness space, completing projects for a local pain management clinic as well as a metabolic and wellness centre. These designs further bridge the gap between form and

function, as the design team ensures that patients feel calm, safe and welcomed while the practitioners have all the tools they need to provide professional support.
The metabolic and wellness centre, for example, has bright lacquered millwork that keeps the space looking clean but is balanced with natural wood and gold hardware that create a warm, spa-like atmosphere. Custom shelving for medical products makes it easy for the team of 10 doctors to keep their space organized. “It’s not a typical clinic,” Alavinasab says. “It’s a very special place—calm, positive and healing.”
Like many trained engineers, the designer considers patience one of her greatest strengths. Instead of rushing clients through a process that she herself knows well, she takes time to listen and understand the specific needs of the families and businesses that she serves. Revealing the completed project is always the best part—“It makes all the late nights, sketches and decisions worth it,” she says—but Alavinasab also revels in the work. “Design has the power to change how people feel every day,” she says. “And being part of that transformation is what I love most.”

DESIGNING THE FUTURE
Emco Corporation draws on its 120-year legacy to not only serve its clients but shape the future of the industry.
By Samantha Vecchiarelli

Creating Spectacular Residences and Moments for Generations

EMCO Corporation, founded in 1906, is one of Canada’s leading distributors of plumbing and related building products, with a national network that supports fast, regional fulfillment for its growing client base. As EMCO approaches its 120th anniversary, the brand balances heritage and innovation. Renowned as Canada’s trusted distribution backbone, EMCO is a powerful trade partner with a wide range of products across plumbing, waterworks, industrial, and HVAC. By blending national supply strength with the local expertise of its showrooms, EMCO smooths the path for designers, contractors, and homeowners from concept to completion.
EMCO’s showrooms—branded as The Ensuite—were established in 2002 to give the company’s trade clients a dedicated, specification-friendly space for new-home buyers to select decorative plumbing fixtures during the building boom in London, Ontario. The portfolio now includes the Kohler Signature Store, the House of Rohl Studio by EMCO, Aquavato and 23 additional Ensuites across Ontario. “These showrooms are
a core differentiator,” says studio manager Jennifer Vander Meer. “We’re local, but not generic: our inventory is shaped by market intelligence and customer-led demand, not by stocking everything everywhere. Our baseline for matching customer needs is in the 95th percentile, and we’re very proud of that.”
Vander Meer notes that EMCO’s regional view allows it to better support its customers. “As a result, we can draw from other locations within EMCO to service clients from their preferred location. If the project is in another city, we can cross-dock the order while keeping the local sales rep as the point of contact.”
As The Ensuite brand grows, it continues to honour its trade roots while embracing new ways to connect, create, and lead— particularly through initiatives for interior designers. Educational support such as Studio Sessions, hosted by Aquavato, was created to help empower the next generation of design professionals with the knowledge they’re seeking. These sessions provide valuable in-person learning that bolsters business development

“WE’RE LOCAL, BUT NOT GENERIC: OUR INVENTORY IS SHAPED BY MARKET INTELLIGENCE AND CUSTOMER-LED DEMAND, NOT BY STOCKING EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE.“
and stronger professional networks. This level of showroomled client service, design collaboration, and commitment fosters a productive environment between EMCO and its clients while helping the industry grow.
To streamline processes, EMCO has invested in digital tools to support a future-forward, tech-savvy experience. “Our trade clients can purchase online,” explains Vander Meer. “This improves efficiency, as they can access our inventory catalogue and build orders in real time—even outside business hours. Clients can even send a screenshot of a handwritten job-site order, and we’ll process it through our system, turning it into a completed order in minutes.”
Vander Meer notes that the brand is constantly learning and growing as it looks ahead to a shifting landscape. “We’ve always invested in meeting our clients where they are,” she says, praising EMCO’s reliability and longevity through changing times and fluctuating markets as a trusted partner that consistently invests in its businesses to help trade clients grow.
As EMCO steps into its next chapter, its focus remains on strengthening relationships, advancing technology, and empowering those who build Canada’s spaces. With innovation rooted in tradition, EMCO continues to shape not only the future of the trade but the foundation of the communities it proudly serves.

DESIGNS FOR ELEVATED LIVING
In Toronto’s Castlefield Design District, NIICO’s sprawling new showroom, opening next spring, invites clients to experience luxury millwork firsthand.
By Susan Semenak

If you step through the door at this Castlefield locale, you will enter an opulent kitchen with not one, but two half-round richly finished walnut islands. Continue on and you will wander through the dining area and into a luxurious living room with a bespoke wine cellar and custom buffet hutch. Next, immerse yourself in a spacious his-and-her wardrobe with lit-up cabinets and glassed-in jewelry cases.
What you are experiencing isn’t an envyinducing high-end house, but the new showroom that NIICO Millwork Group is opening in Toronto’s Castlefield Design District next spring. The sprawling 6,100-square-foot showroom is designed to be a series of real-life spaces—including kitchens, closets, vanities and more—that allow homeowners to envision how millwork can transform their homes. “We want our clients to be able to see and touch and feel things,” says NIICO brand manager Praveena Nathan. “Designers and builders know how to read plans and layouts, but many homeowners find it challenging to imagine how things will look when it is all done. We want to help with that.”

NIICO’S
CABINETRY MAKES THE SPACES ERGONOMIC AND BEAUTIFUL,
DRAWING ON THE HARD-EARNED SKILL OF TOP INDUSTRY EXPERTS. CLOSER TO HOME, ATTENTIVE WHITE-GLOVE SERVICE SPANS FROM THE CLIENTS’ FIRST VISIT TO INSTALLATION DAY AND FINAL INSPECTION.
The NIICO flagship showroom will also feature a model condo kitchen and a massive library of door styles, accessories, hardware, paints, and finishes. And it will include a functional event kitchen where guest chefs host cooking demonstrations to show the kitchens in use. The company’s owners are also planning “lunch-and-learn” sessions where designers and homeowners are invited to learn about new trends and techniques.
“Education is a big component of how we do business,” says Nathan, noting that the brand is set to open a second showroom in Juno Beach, Florida later next year. Joseph Marcantonio, a NIICO partner and its director of operations, says millwork is not just kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities as it once was. Bespoke millwork now finds itself in all rooms of the home, from mudrooms and walk-in closets to family rooms, laundry

rooms, lounges, wine cellars, and home offices.
Marcantonio says the company’s high-end custom millwork does not just conceal the components stored within them; it gives form and personality to the rooms it inhabits and is often equipped with the latest technology to make life easier. He points to the increasingly popular steamer appliances installed in mudrooms that allow homeowners to freshen up their clothes on the way out the door. Or the spa features that have become commonplace in principal ensuite bathrooms. Wardrobe elements such as central islands, leather or felt-lined cabinets, and glassed-in shoe cases make getting ready an indulgent experience. Most contemporary kitchens now have beverage centres, coffee stations and wine bars and camouflaged fridges and dishwashers—all of which require specialized millwork. “Houses today are no longer just spaces to live. They are places where we entertain, cook, gather, socialize; all of that has to fit and flow together,” Marcantonio says.
Handcrafted in Toronto by a team of local craftsmen, engineers, project managers, and designers using materials sourced from Italy, Austria, Germany, and Spain, NIICO’s cabinetry makes the spaces ergonomic and beautiful, drawing on the hard-earned skill of top industry experts. Closer to home, attentive white-glove service spans from the clients’ first visit to installation day and final inspection.
Now, with the opening of the expansive Toronto showroom, NIICO’s client experience is elevated to new heights, inviting customers to be active participants in their own design journeys. Nathan says she hopes that people will find inspiration within the showroom’s thoughtfully crafted spaces and gain an appreciation not just for good design but also luxury craftsmanship. “Ultimately, it’s not just cabinetry we design at NIICO,” she says. “It’s how people feel in their homes.”

SMART SHADING
Specializing in custom luxury window coverings, Life Shades offers high-tech and stylish solutions for every type of home.
By Charlotte Bushnell-Boates
Window coverings can transform a room, helping to turn blah spaces into something elevated, refined and exceptional. For London, Ontario-based Life Shades, custom luxury window coverings are a specialty. The brand stands apart not simply
for its focus on window coverings, but through a personalized approach. A combination of top-notch sourcing, high-quality vendors and in-house manufacturing ensures consistently great results, while a wide range of products makes Life Shades a onestop shop for home automation, shades, designer drapery, large patio-door screens and bio-climatic pergolas and awnings.
“Life Shades stands apart through our design-driven approach and meticulous project management. We don’t just sell blinds; we integrate window coverings into the overall architecture and aesthetic of a space,” explains Shradha (Sonia) Soni, owner and lead design consultant at Life Shades. “From motorized

shades can also adjust based on the time of day, helping regulate indoor comfort and reduce energy consumption, a subtle but significant step toward sustainable living.” Premium solutions, such as those made by Lutron, offer ultra-quiet motors and highlevel precision with luxurious and classic design.

What brings together the entire Life Shades experience is a focus on customer service. With a highly experienced team, Life Shades allows for a zero-stress approach to discovering the best fit for shading at home. A complimentary design consultation guides clients through the different options, fabrics, and models, with input and advice from experts to create the best possible results.
“Our design consultations are highly personalized,” says Soni. “We begin by understanding how you live in your space—how light moves through your rooms, your privacy needs and your overall design style. From there, we curate fabric samples, control options and motorization systems that complement both your interiors and your lifestyle.”
With an in-house team of specialists that includes talented designers, installers and automation experts, Life Shades is equipped with the full range of skills and expertise needed to create premium, customized solutions. The result is an altogether different experience than going into a big-box store or having to coordinate with multiple different partners. Instead, Life Shades acts as a meaningful design partner for perfectly fitted and design-forward window coverings. A wide range of options is on offer, from indoor motorized drapery and curtains to outdoor sun shading and screens and smart home automation. That combined with a customized approach allows clients to find the ideal window-covering solution that perfectly fits their homes and needs.
An emphasis on design-forward solutions also means that the Life Shades team has a strong grasp of the latest trends,
so they are equipped to create solutions that beautifully integrate with what’s popular. “The biggest trend right now is integration and simplicity,” says Soni. “Clients are leaning toward minimalist designs that disappear when not in use but make a statement when lowered. Recessed tracks, concealed pockets, and dual shading systems—both sheer and blackout—are becoming standard in high-end projects.” Also in demand lately are sustainable and textured fabrics. “Think natural linens, weaves and soft neutrals paired with smart technology for effortless control,” Soni adds.
Smart technology integrated with window coverings is something in which Life Shades has particular expertise. Blending convenience, design and energy efficiency, smart shading integrates with platforms such as Control4, Savant, Alexa, and Google Home, to offer easy shading with just a tap or a voice command. “Imagine waking up to shades that rise gradually with the sunrise or having your drapes close automatically at dusk to preserve privacy,” says Soni. “Smart

shades can also adjust based on the time of day, helping regulate indoor comfort and reduce energy consumption, a subtle but significant step toward sustainable living.” Premium solutions, such as those made by Lutron, offer ultra-quiet motors and highlevel precision with luxurious and classic design.

Prime Smart Solutions, design-forward smart products—such
as the
award-winning Moorgen Smart Panels—bring ease and luxury to everyday life.
By Charlotte Bushnell-Boates

There’s nothing like the perfect ambience to set the mood, with the right light, the right temperature, and the right sounds all harmonizing perfectly. And smart panels can control all of this with just the press of a button. Whether you’re beginning your day, watching a movie, or getting ready for a good night’s sleep, smart home automations can make the process simpler and more luxurious.
When it comes to the design of the smart panels, there typically haven’t been many options on offer. Now, Canadians have access to design-forward, premium Moorgen Smart Panels, exclusively available in Canada through Ontario-based Prime Smart Solutions. Moorgen, a leading German smart solutions brand, is known for creating beautiful high-tech home solutions of exceptional quality and design. Having a design-focused option means that a smart panel doesn’t have to be a jarring interruption in a carefully curated home, instead flowing seamlessly into its surroundings or
even acting as a piece of art unto itself.
“What makes the Moorgen different is the customization,” says Marco Mir, CEO of Toronto-based Prime Smart Solutions. “Many of the North American keypads look the same, but with Moorgen, you’re free to choose a different design for a different corner of the house.”
To ensure the highest level of aesthetics, Moorgen’s collaborations with world-renowned designers and artists include Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Zaha Hadid, French architect and designer Philippe Starck, and Canadian luxury design firm Yabu Pushelberg. Other options for Moorgen Smart Panels include premium materials, such as Swarovski crystals, natural stone, black or white crystals, and many more. There’s also an option for Prime Smart Solutions to create custom smart panels using specific materials, such as wood or stone, perfect for seamless integration into any wall. “Moorgen doesn’t only sell the

keypads but also sells art,” explains Mir. “Their products look like art in the home and like part of the home decor, not just like electronic devices.”
But there’s much more to Moorgen Smart Panels than simply how they look; they also deliver when it comes to functionality and customization. “We can pre-set the device to create the right ambience,” Mir says. “For example, when you’re going to bed and want to turn off all the lights and adjust the temperature, we can program these specific settings into your system, so it all happens with the click of just one button, instead of changing all of the settings separately.” Multiple modes allow users to preset different environments, which the panel can cleverly adjust to depending on the time of day. And dimming lights and monitoring ambient temperature means saving energy, too.
Beyond Moorgen Smart Panels, Prime Smart Solutions also offers a wide range of exceptional quality and design-focused high-tech products, including dimming knobs, premium remote controls, smart lighting, self-closing curtains and much more. Each device is carefully crafted to bring ease and luxury into everyday life, all without compromising on beauty.

MASTERING THE ART OF DESIGN
Blending artistry, precision and innovation, Houser Fine Cabinetry redefines luxury with bespoke millwork crafted entirely in-house in Vaughan.
By Samantha Vecchiarelli
In the realm of fine design, craftsmanship defines luxury, and Houser Fine Cabinetry has mastered this art to perfection. Founded by visionary craftsman Hossein Derambakhsh, who brings years of industry experience, Houser Fine Cabinetry is acclaimed for creating bespoke millwork that merges artistry, precision and innovation. From exquisite kitchens to elegant wine
cellars and beyond, each creation embodies refinement because for Derambakhsh and his team, what they do is about crafting environments that reflect the soul of the home and the story of those who live within it.
Derambakhsh attributes the brand’s distinction to its hands-on approach and strong commitment to staying true to its principles.
“We don’t just build cabinetry; we craft environments that reflect our clients’ lifestyle and personality,” he says. “Every piece is custom-designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house by our skilled team in Vaughan, Ontario, with no outsourcing.”
Derambakhsh’s secret to meeting consistently high standards? Plenty of prep work before the first piece of wood is cut. Meticulous planning for every project includes creating detailed technical drawings, careful material selection, and precision engineering. “Because we design and manufacture everything

in-house, we maintain full control over every step of the process,” he says.
This dedication to quality and personalization naturally extends into the client experience, which is hands-on at every step. “Our design team develops detailed concepts, 3D renderings and curated material selections,” Derambakhsh says. “Once the design is approved, production moves seamlessly into our inhouse facility, where precision and craftsmanship come together.”
To complete the process, the brand’s installation team brings the design to life, ensuring every joint, finish and alignment reflects Houser Fine Cabinetry’s standards for perfection.
At the centre of the process is Houser Fine Cabinetry’s 7,000-square-foot production facility, the heart of the brand. Here, having everything under one roof allows the team to manage every step, from raw materials to final finish. “We’ve invested in advanced German-made machinery and software that work hand-in-hand with traditional craftsmanship,” Derambakhsh
notes. By blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, Houser Fine Cabinetry ensures that the production of one-of-a-kind designs can be executed with exceptional accuracy and speed, creating interiors that are both beautifully artistic and excellently crafted.
At Houser Fine Cabinetry, luxury is defined by timeless design and thoughtful detail. Attuned to evolving trends, the team approaches fads through a refined lens, highlighting the rise of warm, organic textures, minimalist forms, and cabinetry that mirrors fine furniture, complete with fluted details, metal accents, and bespoke finishes.
Drawing inspiration from art, architecture, travel, nature and, most of all, its clients, Houser Fine Cabinetry designs interiors that are warm, elegant, and personal. By combining innovation with timeless style, the brand shows that real luxury isn’t about excess; it’s about creating thoughtful, meaningful spaces that feel like home.

be slightly bolder in their choices without going overboard and always ensures that everything comes together well. “It avoids people making costly mistakes while exploring all the wonderful options to establish their own signature style,” Lindsay says.
The thoughtfully appointed new Decorium showroom is dedicated to this new era of curated living in affordable luxury, drawing inspiration from various generations who value fewer but more choice possessions that relate who they are. “We’re seeing greater interest by all generations in the purchase of statement pieces with long-term value to anchor a home’s modern decor,” Lindsay adds. “Whether it’s a sculptured sofa, a bold light
fixture, or an art-inspired accent, these pieces ground your space with personality and purpose, designed to draw the eye and spark conversations.”
It all starts with a visit to Decorium at 4630 Dufferin Street, where the expert team helps clients to go from that first inkling of inspiration to the final installation. “Whether it’s reimagining a single room or entire home, we help our clients to craft spaces that convey their personal story,” Lindsay says. “And we make this journey enjoyable and effortless because we know how busy everyone is.”

THE EVOLUTION OF EXCELLENCE
Mississauga’s Vogt Industries— which celebrated its 15th anniversary this year—is a familyrun Canadian luxury-business success story. Here’s how it rose to award-winning prominence and what lies ahead.
By Susan Kelly
You have to start somewhere, as Reka Kevsehi, co-founder and head of business development at Vogt Industries, renowned for premium kitchen and bathroom fixtures, well knows. In 2010, she and her husband, co-founder Eugene Vogt, began with only a dream and five models of stylish stainless steel kitchen sinks. “I compiled a list of potential customers from online directories,” she says. “Armed with a map, I started driving and cold-calling, showing our products from the trunk of my car.”
The couple’s dream was to leave their day jobs—both worked in the banking industry—and create Canadian products that combined cutting-edge design, advanced technology and premium materials,

while drawing inspiration from emerging trends in Europe.
Fifteen years later, Vogt Industries ships more than 5,000 products across the country and has become an awardwinning nationwide brand.
Kevsehi and the team now operate from a 30,000-squarefoot head office in Mississauga that features a chic showroom and spacious warehouse. The company’s extensive collection includes quartz, composite, ceramic and stainless-steel sinks, complemented by a full range of distinctive faucets and accessories. Their products are available through more than 200 authorized dealers, primarily high-end design retailers and showrooms catering to clients who value exceptional high quality and design.
“Every year we introduce new ideas and products with a focus on both luxury with functionality,” Kevsehi says.
“We call it purposeful luxury.” Developing a groundbreaking Vogt product idea to market can take three years or more, guided by the company’s in-house design and research and development team—currently 25 full-time professionals,
including dedicated market researchers.
These forward thinkers attend international design shows from Milan to Shanghai to stay ahead of global trends. The team is diverse, bringing together a blend of international perspectives that foster creativity. Once a product is designed in-house, components are sourced worldwide from countries that include Germany, Italy, France and Korea, ensuring high quality and innovative features. Most assembly occurs in-house, which ensures it meets the company’s exacting standards.
This design-driven approach has earned rave reviews. The Zauber faucets alone have won a slew of awards internationally, including the 2025 Living Luxe Product Innovation Award for “visionary design and creativity in made-in-Canada products,” a New York Design Award and the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. Among the other notable and winning products is the company’s colourful Mond (“Moon” in German) collection, which features interchangeable accent colours to match changing moods and trends.

“THE COMPANY FEELS LIKE A CHILD I’VE NURTURED, GROWING WITH REMARKABLE SPEED. MY PASSION AND COMMITMENT TO THE BUSINESS REMAIN AS STRONG AS IN ITS EARLIEST DAYS.”
Family lies at the heart of the company’s culture, says Kevsehi. Her husband serves as co-founder, while her brother, Zoltan Kevsehi, heads business operations. Several employees have
been with the company for most of its history, highlighting the strong sense of loyalty and community. “One has been with us for close to a decade,” she says. “Another is godmother to one of my two daughters. We really are like a close-knit family.”
What has remained constant over the years is a passion for precision engineering, timeless aesthetics and uncompromising quality, alongside a steadfast commitment to exceptional customer service. The company continues to prioritize strong client relationships, many of which trace back to its early days.
Looking ahead, there are more award-winning products in the pipeline, backed by a continuing commitment to both customers and employees. Building upon its family values and European-inspired design, Vogt Industries will continue to shape the future of luxury home products in Canada.
“This company feels like a child I’ve nurtured, growing with remarkable speed,” Kevsehi reflects. “My passion and commitment to the business remain as strong as in its earliest days. I’m eager to witness what lies ahead—the innovations, the new products and the opportunities we’ve yet to explore.”

THE STONE EXPERIENCE
Better Marble has built a solid reputation as a purveyor of fine stone surfaces by crafting beauty and building relationships.
By Susan Kelly
There’s something about an expanse of natural stone that is irresistible to the eye. The intricate patterns and natural defects are best seen in person, says Jason Marticho, sales manager at Better Marble in North York, which offers clients hand-
selected stone surfaces from around the world. “Natural stones feature crystal deposits that refract light, creating stunning visual effects not always visible in photographs,” he says.
No wonder interior designers, architects, contractors and fabricators, along with the occasional homeowner from across the GTA, flock to the 22,000-square-foot showroom. There are thousands of superior stone products showcased, including a curated selection of marble, quartzite, granite and cuttingedge engineered stone. “Clients often are awe-struck when I show them how, say, a gorgeous slab of creamy white-and-gold Taj Mahal quartzite changes in appearance under different

lighting,” Marticho says. “It’s like standing in front of a fine work of art created by nature.”
As the company name suggests, natural marble remains a highly sought-after material there. What’s trending into 2026 and beyond: shades of red with a touch of white or cream veining. These vibrant and elegant stones, such as deep burgundy Rosso Levanto, represent a fresh wave of colour trends. A new colour, Terre Lontane—meaning “distant lands”—will soon be introduced, offering a rich, earthy brown with hints of clay and red.
Travertine, a type of limestone characterized by soft veining and subtle, earthy colour variations, has also experienced a resurgence. Marticho sees it being used extensively in accent pieces such as fireplaces, nightstands and headboards throughout Toronto. “But quartzite, especially Taj Mahal, of which I’m confident that we’re the largest supplier here in the GTA, remains a huge trend globally,” he says. “We have some of the rarer colours.”
Every slab has been personally chosen by Marticho or his father, Eli, who founded the company in 2020 and brings more than 25 years of international industry experience. Together, they leverage their deep expertise and global connections to stay ahead of market trends. “Stone slabs can only be chosen by eye, not by catalogue,” Marticho says. “We’ve built relationships with quarries around the world, especially Italy and Brazil. So when we select a stone, we’re choosing those that reflect both natural beauty and ethical craftsmanship.”
Once sourced, Better Marble imports the slabs to Canada. Upon arrival, they are prepared and displayed in the showroom, allowing clients to touch and experience the material firsthand. The company works closely with local fabricators who cut and install the stone, maintaining involvement throughout the entire process to ensure quality and customer satisfaction.

paramount. “New customers become part of the family right away,” Marticho says. “We treat every project as if it were in our own home, guiding clients throughout the journey from consultation to installation.” The relationship continues even after installation, with ongoing support and advice on stone care. Feedback from clients often highlights the comfort and reassurance they feel from Better Marble’s comprehensive approach.
Although not an interior design firm, the company regularly assists clients in choosing stones that suit their practical needs and aesthetic preferences. The team is well-versed in current trends and has expertise in manipulating stone patterns to enhance focal points in various spaces, ensuring the most dramatic and beautiful sections of the stone are showcased. Which helps clients make better, more informed decisions.
“We’re not just providing stone surfaces, we’re building relationships,” Marticho says. “We bridge continents to bring beauty home, making sure every step of the journey feels personal and easy for our clients. When they walk into our showroom, we want them to feel not only welcomed and understood, but totally inspired.”

MADE IN CANADA
Through his platform Black Designers of Canada and too many creative projects to count, multifaceted designer George Sully is building his legacy.
By Eve Thomas

“Launching a brand anywhere is tough, but in Canada, it often feels like you’re building in silence,” says George Sully. Since launching Limb Apparel in 2002, he has gained recognition across multiple disciplines in fashion, design and business, founding brands that include Sully Wong, TCHAD Magazine, House of Hayla, and Sully & Son Co. He has collaborated with Karim Rashid, starred in the Crave show Creative Soles, created the Starfleet footwear for Star Trek: Discovery, and more recently nearly gave Brian Gluckstein a run for his money with his HBC-backed George Sully Home Collection, which hit number one on the floor before its collapse. A twotime inductee at the Bata Shoe Museum and recipient of an honorary degree in brand design from George Brown College, Sully has long been recognized for his influence and innovation. Beyond building brands or creating collections, he has already cemented his legacy by addressing what he lacked when he first entered the industry and by building it for others.
“The hardest part wasn’t the work itself, it was getting people to see the vision before the world told them it was safe to believe in it,” Sully says of those early days (a lament that will be familiar to many in Canadian fashion). “Resources were limited, mentorship was rare and the infrastructure for Canadian designers, especially at the time, was almost nonexistent.”
still exist, he’s firm that the core mandate remains the same, and that progress is palpable. “BDC continues to challenge that system and celebrate excellence on our own terms,” he says. Sully notes something else that has changed: technology.
“When I started, exposure meant convincing a retailer or magazine to take a chance on you. Now, you can go straight to your audience,” he says. “Globalization opened up manufacturing and distribution, but it also created new challenges around ethics and sustainability.” His advice for navigating this new scrollable world? “Don’t just design for applause, design for purpose.”
“THE HARDEST PART WASN’T THE WORK ITSELF, IT WAS GETTING PEOPLE TO SEE THE VISION BEFORE THE WORLD TOLD THEM IT WAS SAFE TO BELIEVE IN IT.”
Beyond the world of Canadian fashion, Sully wanted to uplift Black designers in the country, so in 2020 he founded Black Designers of Canada (BDC), a platform showcasing Black designers of every kind (from fashion to graphics to industrial), creating visibility and fostering connections, as well as giving the Award of Excellence to outstanding new BDC members and brands. Although he says obstacles like gatekeeping and tokenism
True to his reputation, Sully isn’t one to rest on his laurels, exploring new disciplines such as publishing and architecture. “For me, creativity has never been one dimensional,” he says. “Whether it’s fashion, footwear, furniture or branding, the common thread is problem solving through design.” He reveals that he has joined forces with FUJIFILM Printlife to launch BDC Magazine, a beautifully bound, oversized luxury lifestyle publication celebrating Canadian design, creativity and innovation. “It’s more than a magazine,” he says. “We’re connecting corporate Canada with the country’s most forward-thinking minds, working together to shape the future of design, culture and commerce.”
If that weren’t enough, Sully also has a memoir in the works, Designing in the Dark, with ECW Press (distributed by Simon & Schuster in the U.S.). Slated for a late summer 2026 release, it’s sure to be full of both insider looks at the world of Canadian design and inspirational stories for those looking to follow in his footsteps.
“I wish I’d known [when I started] how long it actually takes to build something real. You think success comes after a few good seasons, but it’s really about endurance, not moments,” Sully says. “Most of what I learned was on the job: production, sourcing, partnerships, even failure. Every setback was a classroom.”

DESIGNED TO LAST
People

are increasingly opting for porcelain slabs on exteriors.

Floorence Tile & Slab CEO Ali Khalilzadeh tells us why and gives us the scoop on how to use them for your home’s facade.

When it comes to exterior claddings for your home, there is no shortage of options, from brick to metal, timber to vinyl. But one option may just take the cake: porcelain slabs. While you may think of porcelain slabs as better suited for bathroom flooring, kitchen backsplashes or other interiors, they’re actually a great choice for home facades as well, thanks to their durability and lightweight nature. But not all porcelain slabs are created equal.
Floorence Tile & Slab CEO Ali Khalilzadeh is here to answer our questions on how to use porcelain slabs as cladding and to point us in the right direction.
Living Luxe Magazine (LL): Let’s start with the basics. How can people use porcelain slabs on their homes’ facades as cladding?
Ali Khalilzadeh (AK): Porcelain slabs can be applied to exterior facades either by using a secure anchor system or simply gluing them to Ditra over cement boards. This method ensures a fast, safe
and lasting installation for residential, commercial and even highrise projects. At Floorence Tile, our special cladding porcelain slabs are UV- and freeze-resistant, making them perfect for any climate. They require no maintenance and provide a seamless, elegant finish that transforms any exterior into a modern architectural statement.
LL: Why are people turning to porcelain cladding?
AK: Porcelain slabs are not only becoming popular for interiors— including walls, floors, bathrooms, foyers, countertops and fireplaces—but now they’re increasingly chosen for exterior cladding as well. People love their strength, lightweight nature (about one-sixth the weight of other materials) and resistance to fading or cracking, even in harsh weather. Designers and architects also value the zero-carbon manufacturing process, which supports sustainable practices. Floorence Tile’s porcelain

cladding slabs bring all these benefits together, offering a durable and visually stunning exterior solution.
LL: What should people look for when selecting porcelain slabs for the exterior?
AK: Not every porcelain slab is suitable for facades; only those specifically engineered for cladding applications. Homeowners should look for slabs that are UV- and freeze-resistant, with the right thickness, finish and weight for outdoor use. The installation system is also key to ensuring safety and performance. At Floorence, we carry special cladding porcelain slabs that are designed for this purpose, providing long-term durability, strength, and a flawless appearance across all exterior styles.
LL: What design and aesthetic considerations do you help clients with when it comes to porcelain cladding?
AK: At Floorence Tile, we guide clients in choosing the right balance between performance and style. Our porcelain cladding collections—sourced from the best Italian and Spanish brands— offer endless design options that mimic natural stone, travertine, concrete and modern textured finishes. We help clients select tones, patterns and slab sizes that complement the architecture
and surroundings, creating exteriors that are both timeless and distinctive, perfectly aligned with each project’s design vision.
LL: That sounds great! Are there any downsides that people should be aware of?
AK: There are virtually no downsides to porcelain cladding. The key is professional installation that uses the correct system to ensure safety and longevity. Once installed, Floorence Tile’s cladding slabs perform flawlessly for decades. They’re lightweight, durable and completely maintenance-free. Porcelain cladding remains one of the most reliable, beautiful and future-proof materials available for any exterior design.

IN lifemotion
From
Titanic ingénue to a paranoid autocrat in The Regime, Kate Winslet’s decades-long career continues to redefine what it means to
be a leading woman on her own terms.
Interview by Fabián Waintal
Introduction by Elia Essen
Photography by AMPAS, HBO and Roadside Attractions
When Kate Winslet stepped into the global limelight in the late 1990s with the release of blockbuster hit Titanic, it launched her (and the heroine she plays, Rose) into cinema history books— the iconic film would sweep the Oscars that year, smash box office records and become one of the most widely known tragic love stories of all time. Just 20 years old at the start of filming, Winslet brought to the film a breathtakingly raw performance and magnetic on-screen chemistry with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio that were crucial to Titanic’ s success.
Though Winslet’s roles since then have been numerous and varied, a through-line has remained consistent: the British actress embodies complex women, at once both soft and vulnerable and powerful and brave, bringing a nuanced and multidimensional understanding of femininity to each character. Be it loveably quirky and impulsively manic Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the effortlessly glamorous though traumatized and revenge-seeking Tilly in The Dressmaker, or the unlucky in love writer, Iris, looking for escape in L.A. in The Holiday.
Winslet is also not afraid to step into the shoes of a villain, as she does in the 2008 film, The Reader, to play a Nazi guard, a role that earned her an Oscar, and the 2024 HBO series The
Regime (which she also produced) to become a paranoid and power hungry though charming autocrat. Also on her growing list of producing credits: Lee, a haunting historical film in which she plays model turned World War II photographer Lee Miller. To each, she brings a piece of herself; well-spoken, witty and elegant, each character is brought to life through Winslet’s extensive research and preparation.
Now 50, Winslet is just getting started—both on and off screen. The actress continues to be an outspoken advocate for body positivity, denouncing unrealistic beauty standards and embracing the lines that come with age (she notably refused to have her face retouched in Mare of Easttown). The star is poised to make her directorial debut in December with Goodbye, June, a drama about a fractured family navigating a mother’s worsening health over Christmas. Also on the horizon: a new documentary on King Charles’s foundation narrated by Winslet.
Winslet sums it up in an exclusive interview with journalist Fabián W. Waintal: “I'm not going anywhere, just so you know.” In their conversation, she opens up on the changes she’s witnessed in the industry, empowering female directors, and the characters she most looks forward to playing. Read on for more.

Kate Winslet, 2024 x MAX The Regime PHOTOGRAPHY

Fabián W. Waintal (FW): You received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Zurich International Film Festival, just before turning 50. Do you realize everything you have accomplished?
Kate Winslet (KW): It was my birthday October 5 and I am very excited to be 50. It's a very thrilling time. But I'm not going anywhere, just so you know. I don't even think much about legacy. What matters most to me is telling stories and making films.
FW: What’s the biggest change you see today, when you look back in time?
KW: The film and television industries have changed dramatically, in a fantastic way, especially with streaming services offering longform dramas. Despite these changes, there is something special about watching a film in a cinema, which shaped my love for storytelling. When I was younger, there was also a sense that if you were employed as an actress, it was better to just be grateful and don't complain, because nobody likes a girl who complains. That is changing. That has changed. I see a greater sense of self confidence and awareness in younger actresses today. There’s a sense of pride in who they are, more open. That is something that I see everywhere, and it's a wonderful thing.
FW: Has your passion changed over the years? Do you still feel as excited about your work as an actress today?
KW: I do appreciate the job that I do today, more than ever before. I’ve always been someone who wanted to do this job, and it's not just about playing interesting parts; it's about much more. I care about having the whole experience for the entire cast and the film crew, hoping it will be the same for an audience. And as time went by, I started to understand the emotional significance of telling stories that may not have been told otherwise, certain stories about real women who did incredible things.
FW: The glamour of a premiere and red carpet is part of the job today?
KW: Well, I find walking down the red carpet more challenging than acting in a movie role, even when I'm covered in sweat. There’s too much planning into the right outfit for the red carpets. And the best way to balance that is to enjoy them both.
FW: The hardest decision you ever had to make in life?
KW: I can’t point out a specific hard decision. Life is the best roller coaster. We make decisions all the time. Life is very strange, and we all try to figure it out.
FW: Is it true that an artist becomes a better artist when you suffer in real life?
KW: I don’t know... I could say that we are lucky that we live within fictional behaviors. It’s fascinating, there’s always a new experience. It could be photography, cooking or other things we might never master in real life. We're acting, but we love what we do very much.
FW: Do you always prepare for every movie role? Have you ever tried to start a movie without special training or research about your character?
KW: I love to feel prepared whenever I start a new film. And yet, on day one, I feel like I've done absolutely no preparation whatsoever, like I've never made a film before, and I’m a complete shit. That is why I feel that I need to be ready, even when I end up throwing it all away.
FW: What movie characters do you identify with the most?
KW: Well... when you see Clemetine in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, she is very different than any roles I've done, but believe it or not, she's actually closer to me than most period

movies I've done. I don't wear corsets; I wear jeans. She was much more me than people know. But it's hard to be specific about me and any relationship with my roles, the same way I find it hard to talk about my acting process.
FW: What about other new changes in the film industry and having more women behind and in front of the camera?
KW: That is really changing. And I'm excited to see how much more it will change, because I think there's a big surge coming. At least it feels that way. I hope I'm not wrong about it. I mean, one can never know, but I think some things are changing.
FW: Has the #MeToo movement helped in any way?
KW: I think that since the #MeToo movement, it has changed the space that we give to one another. Female friendships feel more vital now than ever before. And I think that we're listening to women's stories with new ears. And that goes for women and men. Globally, we listen in a different way. And frankly, women deserve it, for sure.
FW: Why do you think it has taken so long for women to become directors in the film industry?
KW: A large part of the reason why there were not as many female directors is because we were busy having families. When you spend your life raising children, that's an automatic priority that it is harder to put down and figure out a way to go to work and keep an eye on how everyone is at home, at the same time. It’s a greater juggle for women. And I think the film industry is starting to get better by creating a working environment that is more accommodating in that regard. People can bring their children to work sometimes and everyone works much better that way. It's a conversation that's happening more and more. And as time goes by, we should be able to see a bit of a shift in the actual length of film
working hours, which is still very long. That’s something that is also starting to change. Some people are already helping with slightly easier working hours for women. That’s why I think a lot is changing.
FW: Have you heard new perspectives from the younger generation?
KW: Yes, and I find there’s one thing abundantly clear: that younger actresses, they now have a voice in a way that 15 or 30 years ago, was not even a space that existed for a woman. When today they say, “I don't think I'm comfortable with that,” that’s something that didn't exist before.
FW: Two of your children are actors, too. Mia worked with you in the TV movie I Am Ruth and Joe appeared also in your last film, Lee. Did they ask for it? Did you encourage them to follow in your footsteps?
KW: Lord, I hoped they would not. They are encouraged to do what they want to do, regardless. When my daughter decided to be an actress, I supported her and if my son decided to be a farmer, I would have asked him to show me how to milk cows [laughs]. I never wanted to stand in their own decisions, whatever they choose.
FW: Did you just say you hoped your children wouldn’t become actors?
KW: It could be a soul-destroying experience if you can't get to work. It can be tough. In any form of artistic expression, at least 50 per cent of it has to do with confidence and self-belief. And if you don't have that, you're totally screwed.
FW: What are the characters you look forward to playing today?
KW: I was inspired by [the war photographer] Lee [Miller], and I've

been overwhelmed by that story, because it was not a film about a war; it was a film about a woman. And if I'm ever able to play a character in the future like that again, it would be an absolutely wonderful honour. The way that we live, we sometimes forget that we're busy thinking, on our phones and so much work and our children, all of it. And we forget to stop and think “I am proud of myself for that,” especially as women. And I'm really enjoying saying, “I'm proud of what I’ve done.” That's a good feeling.
FW: Is it true that your love of antique tables had a lot to do with the movie about the war photographer, Lee?
KW: Yes! A friend of mine called me to say there was an incredible table where Lee Miller would eat with her friends and her lover Roland Penrose. The history was extraordinary. So, I bought the table, not polished at all, it felt like an old friend. And when I sat at the table, I thought, “I wonder why nobody has ever made a film about Lee Miller.” That was interesting. I immediately tried to look into the rights, and I was fortunate that Lee’s son, Antony Penrose, was able to open his mother’s archive to me along with her life, her work and her stories. I also learned photography. I couldn't believe the light meter alone drove me more insane than the camera itself. I've always been fascinated by photography. I have lots of photographers in my family. My children did it at school, and as a mother I used to stand back and let them do it, thinking “Okay, I'll wait for my turn.” And playing Lee was so good for me because it meant I didn't have to wait for my turn anymore.
FW: Is there a big difference when you make an independent film like Lee and the HBO series The Regime or a big production like Titanic?
KW: Well, it’s really difficult to make independent films because
it means finding private financing. That could come from a small company, a film company or individuals who want to get involved in the film industry. And a studio film, the entire film is funded by a studio, so you have an infrastructure that is slightly handed to you on a plate. So when you make an independent movie, we have nothing handed to us on a plate. We need to go and fight for every penny. Just like we had such a low budget for Ammonite. People showed up because they wanted to tell those stories. Sometimes we get those opportunities to do small but incredibly rewarding pieces, often more connected. Now, what's important is the people you are going to work with each day, to tell a good story together. A director once said, “There are two kinds of actors, the ones who love back and the ones who run from it—which are you?”
FW: Could we talk about the Academy Awards?
KW: As an actress, I can’t ever expect to get that honour. It's an extraordinary thing to receive an Oscar. I just feel amazed to be able to say that I have been nominated. It's a really thrilling experience. I'm really proud. It's not something that I thought it could ever happen as an aspiring young actress. You barely think you're going to even get a job. And to be in that position is always remarkable. It's never been something I take lightly.
FW: You have been nominated for the Academy Award seven times. What would it mean to be nominated again?
KW: I can’t answer that question because I don't know how to [laughs]. But certainly, I've been really lucky in my life to have worked with fantastic actors and directors who have played a big part for me to be nominated at all, let alone winning [an Oscar]. I've certainly had wonderful triumphs and moments that I've been very fortunate to share. I've just been very lucky.

Designed by Jane Lockhart Design, this Collingwood chateau overlooking Georgian Bay is a modern and inviting ski retreat for an active family.

High on a hill overlooking Georgian Bay, this spectacular house, dubbed Blue Mountain Home, spans 6,500 square feet and features massive wood beams, rough-cut stone and expansive 15-foottall windows overlooking majestic vistas. Completed last winter for a couple and their two teenage sons as the family ski retreat, the five-bedroom home is bright and airy thanks to tall ceilings and an open floorplan, while woods and warm tones ensure it’s inviting to family and guests alike.
This stately chateau was designed by renowned Toronto architect Lorne Rose, knwown for his stunning customized dream homes, and built by Primont Homes.
Luxurious it may be, but don’t call it fancy. Jane Lockhart—whose eponymous residential and commercial design firm was

tasked with bringing the home’s interiors to life—says her mission from the get-go was to keep things cozy.
“This is a very special house and it’s impressive to walk into, with the view and all the custom millwork [by Estate Interiors],” Lockhart says. “But the owners didn’t want it to be too precious or too formal. They wanted it cozy and warm.”
High on their wish list was a living room with a fireplace and big comfy sofas where everyone could lie down for a nap or watch television on Saturday afternoon after a day on the nearby ski hills of Blue Mountain Village. They also imagined themselves in the kitchen making pizza together at the island counter.
So, Lockhart and her team obliged with a massive 12-footwide stone and wood fireplace surround with a long gas insert that is perfect for setting the mood. To keep this feature from unduly dominating the room, the designers incorporated two walnut panels to hold a pair of tubular sconces, a shiplap recess for the wall-mounted television and a narrow seveninch mantel. “All of these elements stop this from seeming like a fortress wall,” Lockhart says. “And the mantel offers a place to hang the stockings at Christmas.”
Lockhart says homey touches such as these, which are among her trademarks, are all about what she calls “human scaling.”
To that end, the design team commissioned a large sectional sofa and smaller chaises longues for ample relaxation space. And they installed a coffee bar and hot chocolate station just steps away from the fireplace—an unexpected but welcome luxury for a ski chalet.
The upholstery had to be “cushy and comfy,” as Lockhart calls it, but also durable and easy to clean. “There is no need to worry about spilling wine or hot chocolate,” she says. “Everything in this house looks good and wears well.”
And when the owner said she wanted the main living area to have a “romantic feel” that counterbalanced the building’s right angles, Lockhart curved the corners of the sofa and hung a row of round globe pendants over the kitchen island, echoed in the modern circular chandelier over the dining room table.
The mudroom and entrance foyer highlight the “wash and wear” features that Lockhart says are so handy in second homes inhabited by active families. The entrance floor is clad in dark slate-look porcelain tiles that are a cinch to clean up. The mudroom includes ample storage space for hiding ski

equipment behind slatted doors, and electrical outlets for plugging in heated gloves and mitts. A washing machine and dryer are tucked here, too, so wet, dirty sports clothes don’t pile up in the rest of the house.
One of the family’s favourite spots is the indoor grilling room that can be used all year long thanks to a fully-vented custom hood. It opens onto a screened, covered porch and beyond, an outdoor patio with views onto Collingwood and the shores of Georgian Bay, perfect for al fresco dining during the warmer months. “Everybody loves barbecuing at the cottage,” Lockhart says. “But why should it be only in summer?”
On the main floor, the primary bedroom takes full advantage of the stunning location with dramatic soaring windows. A feature wall that integrates a headboard, mirrors and suede panels invites extra decadent vacation sleep. The primary ensuite bath mixes materials, with light-coloured floor tiles and a double vanity in lightly toasted oak, plus walls in a soft grey two-tone herringbone pattern. Lockhart notes that she uses matte finishes wherever she can to create a calming atmosphere without glare or gloss.
Another hidden but useful feature that Lockhart incorporated into the house, a compact home office, first became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, when legions of people suddenly found themselves working from their country places. Nobody ever wants to hand useable space over to a home office—especially not at the cottage, Lockhart notes—but somebody might occasionally need to step away to take a work call or get something done.
So, she fit a small work station into a walk-in closet off the main family space that offers privacy and quiet without taking up too much room. “My job as a designer is to manage all these things that make a space comfortable and easy to live in,” Lockhart says. “I never want a place to be just beautiful.”

THE NATURAL ORDER

This impeccable North York estate property encompasses the best of Frank Lloyd Wright’s inspirations and a harmonious flow between indoors and out.

Asingularly stunning property along a North York ravine fully embraces the natural landscape of a rare 1.38-acre city lot with a home that honours the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright in its seamless indooroutdoor fusion.
“The homeowner spared no expense in creating this place of his dreams,” says Farima Riahi, a global luxury real estate advisor with Hammond Real Estate Properties, which currently has the property listed for $14.8 million. “What’s so amazing is how absolutely peaceful and relaxing all of this home is in the heart of a metropolitan city.”
Natural stone, brick and wood finishings accompany the home’s numerous expansive windows that admit abundant natural light and offer picture-perfect views of the mature trees encircling the property. The quaint and inviting front of the home conceals the true expanse of its 12,000 square feet of five-star sophistication, which includes six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
Leading Toronto architect Richard Librach conceptualized the homeowner’s vision for the idyllic retreat at 7 Oxbow Road, appropriately named Everscape. The building was brought to life with superb craftmanship by Richard Little of Urban Innovations Custom Homes. “There is not one detail that wasn’t thoroughly considered,” says Jerry Hammond, the founder of Hammond Real Estate Properties.
All of the home’s wood-paneled windows are a homage to Wright’s approach of inviting nature’s light and lushness into each interior space. “A small circular pond visible from several windows is also a way that homeowners can admire the outdoors with a quick peek outside,” Riahi says. “Especially with the beautiful red koi in this miniature courtyard.”
Fish are featured again indoors within a dual-sided aquarium that adorns the curved wall of a stone rotunda leading to a staircase. Throughout the house, the blonde cabinetry, doors, beams and flooring warm the brown and grey brick and stone walls and walkways so everything feels light, spacious, even airy, while also grounding with all its reassuring earthiness.
Mid-century-inspired furnishings in neutral shades as well as the classic muted yellow,

turquoise, purple and intense blue also recall Wright’s era. Pale grass cloth and other subtle wall colourings showcase the mahogany builtin cabinetry. Artistic ceiling inlays are fashioned from dark wood and, in one room, it resembles a beautiful soapstone sculpture. An array of modern pendant lighting adds sparkle and shine to some spaces while recessed ceiling, stairway and floor lighting eliminates shadowy corners. The attention to lighting is further evidenced by how the entire house becomes aglow in a golden hue come nightfall.
While most of the home offers the soothing softness of natural tones, it is not without colourful accents. These are primarily achieved
through large, vibrant paintings, as well as patterned window treatments, which stay out of sight unless required. The movie theatre is defined by deep red leather seating and a ceramic wet bar that makes soda and popcorn refills effortless.
The meticulous attention to every detail in the design is further evidenced by the subtle repetition of patterns throughout the home. For example, small ceramic tiles featured in the backsplash of the cinema are echoed in several bathrooms and the laundry room, each in different colours.
Beyond the state-of-the-art cinema, a yoga studio, gym and steam

room ensure there’s no need to ever leave Everscape. Entertaining is a breeze with the multiple walkouts to the magnificent backyard oasis with dual barbecues, sunny and sheltered lounging spaces equipped with a flat screen television and fireplace, as well as an exquisite outdoor dining area tucked under a mahogany beadboard ceiling.
Tennis, anyone? The court sits alongside the ravine that provides so much of the estate’s privacy. A basketball court is also nearby for those who prefer to shoot hoops. And most everyone would enjoy a cooling dip in the saltwater infinity pool, of course, followed by some time soaking in the adjacent hot tub. The numerous mature trees make the whole back of the house feel like it’s tucked away in the countryside, far from the bustle of the city.
The ground-level den, pool room and home gym alongside generously proportioned windows is yet another way the home brightens up each day with its interior-exterior synthesis. “You never feel like you’re walking down into a closed basement or dark mancave, I can tell you,” Hammond’s agent Farid Riahi says.
Visitors are invited to stay in one of three guestrooms, each with its own bathroom, so they feel right at home. “It really is a magnificent property—a rare find because of how it combines utmost elegance with spacious coziness,” Riahi says.

Yorkville residence

boutique experience. With a unique art program and custom furnishings, the opulent sub-penthouse is its crown jewel.
By Charlotte Bushnell-Boates
In the heart of Toronto, a stunning new residence is soon to be unveiled. The sub-penthouse of Yorkville
Private Estates is a singular experience, providing something exceptional and rare within Toronto. The nearly 6,000-square-foot residence provides the ease and amenities of a larger luxury home with the discretion of a smaller, boutique residence. It also boasts sweeping views that few can rival within the city, further creating a standout living experience at every turn.
“Where the building is located is simply amazing,”
Photography by Margaret Mulligan

"THE LOCATION IS INCREDIBLE. EVERYTHING IS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS AS YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR INTO THE HEART OF YORKVILLE."
explains award-winning listing agent Deana Feldman. “With the protected airspace surrounding it, it has unobstructed views north, west and south. There are really less than a handful of suites in the entire city that could come close to views like that.”
The turnkey residence has been custom-furnished by renowned Parisian design firm Studio Liaigre, with a highly refined and premium approach. The spacious suite boasts three bedrooms, a living and dining great room for entertaining, a family room, chef’s kitchen, servery and two large terraces. The primary bedroom offers exceptional views as well as two walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms. Two additional bedrooms provide added space for family or guests.
The entire residence has a warm and sumptuous feel. Beyond the exquisite furnishings, the property features exceptional interior finishing details from celebrated Toronto-based design firm Powell & Bonnell, including moulding detailing on the high ceilings, and luxurious, natural materials. “It provides all of the comforts of a condo and is entirely turnkey, with no renovations required, which is highly unusual for a property at this square footage,” Feldman says. “And the location is incredible. Everything is at your fingertips as you walk out the door into the heart of Yorkville.”
Camrost Felcorp, the developer behind Yorkville Private Estates, opted for a creative and unique approach to conceive a living experience that offers the amenities and benefits that come with a condominium but at a more intimate, private scale.
Situated atop a 25-storey condominium building, Yorkville Private Estates’ suites include only 48 units across the top 14 storeys, with a private entrance and lobby distinct from the apartments underneath.
Yet, residents at Yorkville Private Estates still have access to the complete suite of amenities, including valet parking, a 24-hour concierge service, two exclusive elevators, a private gym and golf simulator, and use of an indoor pool and party room. “It’s really

STANDARDS FOR LUXURY WITHOUT LEVERAGING AN INTERNATIONAL LUXURY BRAND."
a home that was built by Torontonians for Torontonians, yet meets international standards for luxury without leveraging an international luxury brand,” says Christopher Castellano, vice-president of sales and marketing at Camrost Felcorp.
Beyond exquisite furnishings, luxury amenities and worldclass design, the sub-penthouse also offers something else strikingly unique within Toronto. The entire suite includes an exceptional art program curated by David Moos, founder of David Moos Art Advisory and formerly curator of modern and contemporary art at the Art Gallery of Ontario. “I saw it as an opportunity to bring important European artists to Toronto. Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is a leading European gallery, and I selected artists and specific works that I believe define the forefront of contemporary art today,” says Moos, referring to sourcing art that is rarely seen in Toronto.
The suite features major works from renowned artists such as Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, and Megan Rooney. “The idea was to present work that enhances the sub-penthouse in a thoughtful and aesthetic manner, but to also curate a museum-calibre presentation of works not normally available in Canada,” adds Moos.
This unparalleled sub-penthouse residence is an exercise in excellence across all elements of a property, in a way that’s not only uncommon but also decidedly unique within the Toronto real estate market. From the breathtaking views radiating across the city to the curated art program and furnishings, it’s an ideal Yorkville home in which to experience all that is on offer in Toronto.

ESTATE GRACE OF CLASSIC AN
This $28.88 million French provincial chateau exudes timeless elegance as it both fits in with and stands out in its upscale Toronto setting.
By Susan Kelly Photography by KiaNikan
This exquisite chateau poses something of a paradox. On the one hand, it is all spacious, sumptuous elegance, fitting right in with the other gated multimilliondollar estates in Toronto's toney Bridle Path neighbourhood. After all, discretion is required in this highly exclusive and sought-after area, past and present residents of which are said to include Drake, Céline Dion, Mick Jagger and the late Gordon Lightfoot.
On the other hand, while giving a nod to historic architecture found in provincial France, the mansion’s design has a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it a standout. “It’s a stunning property, inside and out,” says Barry Cohen, listing agent and President of Cohen Homes & Estates in Toronto, “a tribute to the genius of its builder, the legendary Joe Brennan.”
Brennan gained a reputation as a “custom design guru,” designing and building luxury

"WHEN YOU WALK UP THE GRAND SPIRAL STAIRCASE WITH ORNATE WROUGHT-IRON HANDRAIL, IT'S LIKE TRAVELING IN TIME; YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE IN AN HISTORIC EUROPEAN CASTLE."
homes and condominiums in the city and beyond for more than 35 years. In the 1990s, he put his inimitable signature on this chateau, which subsequently received tasteful updates to keep it modern and relevant. At more than 20,000 square feet, the mansion is truly palatial in size: there are eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, with a separate two-bedroom apartment above the garages.
The grandeur begins at the stone and wrought-iron entry gate, around which flourish mature trees and beautiful landscaping. Proceeding along a heated driveway and walkways, a gracefully arched double-door entry appears. Over it, the striking stone facade is complemented by a mansard roof with dormer windows and the period touch of ivy-clad turrets. The magnificent foyer assures a grand entrance, with a soaring beamed cathedral ceiling for an airy ambience. The focal point: an ornately carved marble fireplace, a 15th-century antique imported from France.
The main-level living areas lie off the foyer, each of impressive proportions and featuring high ceilings and fireplaces. They include a paneled library, whose French doors lead to the stone terrace, and living and family rooms, the latter with striking
paneled ceiling with inlaid walnut wood. Leaded windows, solid oak doors and intricate ceiling mouldings abound, touches that enhance the elegant chateau look.
“There are stunning ornate details in every room, including the dining room, which features a unique honeycomb-patterned ceiling and slate floors,” Cohen says. A fully-equipped gourmet kitchen is complete with a recessed paneled archway that leads to a service hall. Custom solid-wood-framed cabinetry and granite countertops are designed for both efficiency and visual warmth. The same goes for the richly burnished durable terracotta floor tiles, a look now very much in vogue. Original to the home and heated, they extend underfoot into the adjacent light-filled cozy rotunda breakfast room.
“The home’s most striking feature is a turret lined with softly textured stone walls,” Cohen notes. It serves a practical purpose as well, providing access to the upper levels. “When you walk up the grand spiral staircase with ornate wrought-iron handrail, it’s like traveling in time; you feel like you’re in an historic European castle.” Along the way, leaded-glass windows admit light, while overhead an impressive chandelier hangs from the dramatically

domed ceiling.
The spacious second-floor principal bedroom suite is entered through double doors. Serenity is assured with designer wall treatments, high ceilings and a gas fireplace with an elaborate stone mantle. French doors lead out to a balcony overlooking the rear gardens, as does the fabulous window-lined rotundashaped sitting room topped with a domed ceiling. Two elegantly appointed walk-in closets are at the residents’ disposal, as is a sumptuous six-piece ensuite bathroom, with heated marble flooring and tiles, and every luxury amenity.
A recreation area is found on the third and uppermost floor. “It includes a bar area, billiard room and indoor hockey rink, a nicely unexpected feature,” Cohen notes. Another recreation room, with a lounge area and exercise and media rooms, is
located in the lower level. There is also a large wine cellar that can hold more than 2,000 bottles, and a tasting room.
At 85 The Bridle Path, the home is in a prime location facing the lushly verdant Toronto Botanical Gardens. As well, the property features two acres of custom landscaping, with an abundance of mature trees and gardens. Among the many upscale outdoor-living amenities, the grounds include a spacious terrace, a swimming pool with a deluxe pool house, hot tub and professional-level sports court.
“The genius of this palatial estate’s design is that it offers so much expansive living space but is also a very warm and welcoming family home,” Cohen says. “Blending timeless French provincial architecture with modern updates and amenities, it truly does offer the epitome of luxury living.”
