It is our pleasure to welcome you to our 18th annual production sale. In addition, we are celebrating 30 years of being in the seedstock business. It is hard to believe that a small start with a few head of replacement heifers has turned into a passion of breeding for cows that thrive in an unpampered environment three decades later. Of all the things that have changed since the start, one thing that has remained constant has been our commitment to breed for solid cows that do their job day in, day out. What this means for us is a cow that will calve unassisted, get her calf up and raise it until weaning without help from us. She needs to be a good mother, know where that calf is, and protect it from the elements and natural predators. She must breed back in a short time frame of 42 days or less, wean an acceptable calf and maintain an acceptable condition herself. She must have good foot and leg structure, be able to travel well and go make a living on her own. Udders must have good attachment, suspension and we appreciate a teat size that is similar to an index finger in size and a pinky finger in length. We strive for a 4.5 frame cow with an average mature weight around 1300 pounds. In our environment, this type of cow seems to be able to do well checking the boxes required of her. We don’t believe that an artificial environment with creep feeders and daily rations to the cowherd has any place in breeding cattle to thrive in range conditions. We also try to make these cows work in an environment that is as similar to a real-world commercial operation as possible. Naturally, we must handle these cows more than a commercial operation would with gathering birth data, AI and weaning information; however, we make these cows make a living outside and do their job on grass, mineral and water and have full confidence these bulls will sire offspring that will do the same for you.
The bulls offered this year are a result of planned matings to make phenomenal cows. We feel that if you have a strong maternal foundation, the performance of the calves will take care of itself. We love trouble-free females with intelligence, longevity and fertility that go out and take care of business. As you can see, we tend to like proven, older pedigrees that the guesswork has been taken out of most of the time. We try to breed the cows to like-type animals to create offspring, both heifers and bulls, that will produce with consistency either for our own herd or yours.
As always, we appreciate your support over the past 30 years and look forward to continuing to serve our great industry by providing hard-working genetics that will leave you with a cowherd to be proud of.
Sincerely,
Jim, Lynn and the Open A Crew

JIM & LYNN ARTHAUD FAMILY
Jim and Lynn started Open A in 1997 with the vision of building a legacy cowherd that will thrive in the northern Great Plains of the US. Grace is a Freshman at MSU, majoring in Ag Communications. She has stepped up the social media presence of Open A in the past year which has been a huge addition for the ranch. Hudson is going to school at South Heart High School and enjoys spending time chasing elk and deer on the ranch during hunting season.
TELLAN & KAYLA STEFFAN FAMILY
Tellan is the General Manager of Open A overseeing the business side of the operation. Kayla continues to help where she can with some of the paperwork and support of operations when needed when she isn’t chasing kids!
DEY & JEN OBRIGEWITCH FAMILY
Dey and Jen have been with Open A for a decade managing the Kramer Ranch portion of the ranch. They manage a commercial cowherd that also serves as our recipient cowherd for our embryo program. Their kids, Birch, Coll and Kate are often found helping in every aspect of the ranch and are much appreciated as well!
RYAN & KALLI SCHMELTZER FAMILY
Ryan and Kalli along with their kids, Grady and Hannah, continue to manage the registered cowherd on the State Line Ranch. They do a great job and we appreciate having them here.
JT SAUNDERS
JT joined the Open A team in the fall of 2025. He manages the commercial cowherd at Franks Creek Ranch north of Belfield and also oversees the feedlot, taking care of the development of bulls and replacement heifers. JT has quickly become a great addition to the crew, and we’re glad to have him on board at Open A!

Open A Allen 5826 is a calving ease Cadillac! He is the only Alap son in the sale and should be on everyone’s short list that is serious about making phenomenal females. Alap is a bull we used after getting strong recommendations as being a sire of great cows. His 12 year old dam continues to take her job seriously and will calve again this spring. We have 4 of her daughters working in the herd including E505 who has raised the lot 1 bull twice and F8351, the rockstar mother of Lot 27 in this sale. Recommended for heifers.

While the focus from the beginning has been on a solid trouble free female, we dialed in the focus in 2013 to a more moderate framed female with fleshing ability while maintaining excellent udders, feet and calving ease. We got much more selective on pedigrees allowed into the gene pool focusing on older, proven genetics with fleshing ability, good feet, udders and longevity.

Our culling program is simple.
If we have to help them do their job, they fail to breed, wean a calf or maintain themselves, nurse other cows, or prove they can’t mother a calf, they are gone. While we test some new genetics from time to time, our focus in genetic selection is mainly geared towards older genetics that have proven themselves repeatedly.

5925 has a unique peigree on his sires side. His Grandsire, Prince of Malpas was born in 1956 and is in many pedigrees steming from the Wye Plantation in Maryland. We purchased his sire out of the Spring Valley dispersal and have used him naturally the last couple years, he is still going strong as a coming 8 year old bull.

We truly believe that the youth in our rural, small-town communities are the future leaders that will shape the landscape of these same communities moving forward. We know and see firsthand how rural America is the heartbeat that keeps nations fed and economies strong. With a strong sense of responsibility to our local area, we are proud to support our local 4-H program through participation in the premium sale as well as hosting field days for Dickinson State University grazing management classes.

2026 marks the 17th year that Open A has collaborated with Home on the Range supporting their agriculture program that is the backbone of their rehabilitation program. We took the opportunity to come along side them with the start and development of their current foundation cowherd and have had the opportunity to incorporate an ongoing Embryo Transfer program on an annual basis. They utilize the opportunity to educate the kids on animal reproduction and genetics by putting our embryos into their commercial cows. They calve out and raise the calves until weaning when we purchase the calves back from them for our registered herd.
Home On The Range is a therapeutic and working cattle ranch for boys and girls, ages 12-19. It is located in western North Dakota near the small town of Sentinel Butte. The children live in a clean and wholesome environment and learn about the ranch and farm lifestyle. The children help haul square hay bales, feed the livestock, repair fences, move cattle to pastures on the ranch, and assist in the bovine embryo transfer and calving. The kids can go horseback riding and learn how to drive a team of mules. All of this ranch and working skills help the children when they are discharged from HOTR by teaching them responsibility, accountability, teamwork, leadership, completing a job, and reporting to their work supervisor.
The youth live at Home On The Range for 3-6 months. The children have experienced or witnessed trauma that most people can’t imagine. During that time period, they attend school (when it is in session), attend a Chapel service on a regular basis, participate in on-site and off-campus recreational activities, and engage in animal assisted or adventure therapy.
Home On The Range utilizes the natural resources of the land, buildings, and animals to teach the children about new life skills, how to develop positive and trusting relationship, and feel safe. Each of the therapeutic groups are “experiential” and hands-on therapy. The children don’t realize they are participating in therapy. They are learning to face life challenge’s and how to handle their behavior and emotions while in the presence of professional staff; thereby internalizing what they learn so they can handle different situations when they return to their homes or communities.
“Before I came to HOTR, I had no idea what a farm life was like. I never had been around a horse before so that was a big change. When HOTR decided to put me in horsemanship I was scared out of my mind. I am now a very skilled rider. Every single experience I made in the arena affected me positively. At HOTR we have different groups and I’ve been in every single horse group each slightly different. Sammy and I have a strong bond and he’s very special to me. I understand him and he understands me. He’s very gentle and super caring and usually I never struggle with him. He has taught me a lot.” - HOTR child
“There are lots of groups to help you grow, learn, recover and overcome traumas. Groups with the horses have helped me learn about forming relationships and have even showed me something about myself. There’s a group called Ending the Game that teaches you about all sorts of trafficking and coercion. I have gained better relationships with girls around me and have gotten more comfortable talking about hard things I went through.”
-
HOTR girl
Home On The Range relies on many generous donations and pledges to sustain therapeutic services, spiritual development, and recreational opportunities. Home On The Range’s goal is to help children by giving them healing, help, hope – to put them “back in the saddle.”
