Welcome from CK Bar Ranch
Amy and I would like to welcome you to our 25th Annual Bull Sale.
My association with the Simmental breed began 44 years ago as a 4-H project. What started as a youth project has grown into a lifelong passion to produce high-quality bulls for the commercial cattle industry. The bulls selling this year have excelled from birth all the way through sale time and represent years of breeding cattle that have gone to work for some of the top cattlemen in the industry and proven their worth.
The greatest proof of that success is the customers who return year after year to purchase bulls from our program—many of whom have been with us for more than 20 years.
We have always believed in quality over quantity, and this set of bulls reflects that philosophy. Every bull has earned his place in the sale based on performance, genotype, or both. Over the last five years we have worked hard to improve calving ease and marbling without sacrificing performance, and this offering represents a big step forward in that direction.
While there are several bulls that are designed to be strong terminal sires, the majority of this group offers the versatility to work in both terminal programs and operations that retain replacement females. These are the kind of bulls that can move a program forward.
These are truly exciting times for the cattle industry. The record prices we experienced this past year look to continue for the foreseeable future. I would also like to take a moment to thank the people who make this possible. Amy has been an incredible partner in this operation, and I truly don’t know how I would get everything done without her. From spending much of June living out of a horse trailer during AI season to sorting cattle, feeding, and keeping everything moving forward when I’m away, she is always willing to do whatever it takes.
I’m also grateful to my parents. My dad instilled in me the drive to work hard and gave me the opportunity to get started all those years ago, and I will always appreciate the support and encouragement that both Mom and Dad have given along the way. I’d also like to thank Amy’s parents for the opportunity to work within their operation, which has helped us continue to grow our own.

Here is a bull that really ties together what we are working hard to accomplish. From a phenotype standpoint he is very attractive with excellent bone and feet structure. He is very long bodied and easy fleshing. He is suitable for use on both cows and heifers and his daughters will make some awesome females. His grandam has done great things for our herd siring many super females and her last natural bull we retained for our own use. On top of all that this bulls disposition is outstanding.
This Patton son is extremely thick made end to end. He has been a standout since day 1. If you have followed us over the last 5 years its easy to see the impact that his maternal grandsire has made and he is passing his growth along to his daughters. 301 has a stacked pedigree on both sides and the predictability is real with this bull.

He is in the top 20% for REA and above average for MARB. If your program just needs a small shot of SimGenetics this bull will fit the bill.

Here is a must look at bull if your looking for a bull for both heifers and cows and yet still maintain some excellent growth. The K16 sired cattle are very moderate but pack a lot of red meat on in a very easy fleshing package. 339 is stout built while maintaining excellent foot structure.

A true sleep all night heifer bull, but without sacrificing performance. N157 combines two of the pillars of our herd, the 457 donor cow and 8522 on the maternal side. This bull has a bright future, and his young dam is really maturing into a cow that will have an impact on our herd.

“My name is Michael Nathe, and I operate a 300 head cow-calf pair operation in Northeast Montana. Winters are harsh, plenty of wind and sub-zero temperatures. The cattle we run here must be tough and sure footed. Steep hills and native grass are their habitat, and we pasture calve every cow except first calf heifers. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.
Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at six years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a rib-eye steak.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
