The cows are bred to start calving by March 1st. We use cydr’s on the cows to synchronize them for a one time AI after which they are sorted for pasture and hauled to several summer pastures between ten and thirty miles from the ranch headquarters. We prefer to have the cows on their respective pasture management groups a couple weeks prior to breeding as hauling has been known to cause the cows to skip a cycle. It is crucial that we utilize top end herd bulls to clean up any repeat estrus cycles. The cows are restricted to a 60 day breeding window, any cows not pregnant after that are sold as open.
The bull calves are weaned mid to late October at which time they are vaccinated and treated for parasites. They are given a 30 day feed acclimation “warm up” prior to the on test sort on November first. The bull calves are weighed monthly and in some cases bimonthly.
The bulls are developed here at the ranch on a TMR ration consisting of alfalfa hay, grass hay, oat hay, and a grain mix of oats and barley. The ration is formulated as a bull development ration to promote muscle development and growth without fat deposition.
The bulls are given a complete breeding soundness exam (BSE) and trich tested prior to the sale. They will be identified by their left ear tattoo and a corresponding red ear tag and a yellow lot tag. They are available for viewing at any time during the feed test November first through March first and up to sale day. On sale day they are sorted for size and growth and penned for easy access for viewing.
We offer free delivery within 200 miles of Wood V bar X Ranch and will begin making deliveries around April 15th. We make every effort to accommodate the buyer and conditions at their ranch prior to delivery. In addition, we will assist in delivery to locations outside the surrounding states of Idaho.
Bulls will be fed free of charge until delivery. If first delivery attempt is unsuccessful, feed costs will begin accumulating at $3 per head per day. If requested, we will continue to feed the bulls at that rate up until May first. No free delivery on heifers unless accompanied by a bull purchase. Heifers will need to be picked up within 8 days of sale.
The bulls have been on a full vaccination regiment since birth and boosted at weaning and yearling with Bovishield Gold 5, Ultrabac 8, Pillguard Pinkeye, Ivermectin Injectable and Multi min.
The bulls will be penned for viewing the morning of the sale and will remain in their respective pens during the sale. The bulls do not go through the sale ring live. We will sell the bulls in catalog order. Any changes will be announced from the block.
To better identify the calving ease potential of the sale bulls, we have adapted a simple single digit scoring system 1 through 3, utilizing birth wt. (BW), calving ease direct (CED) and actual birth wt. using the top ranking for each and breaking that into 3 categories.
A 3 CE Score indicates 1% to 20% ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW less than 73 lbs.
A 2 CE Score indicates 21% to 50% ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW between 74-86 lbs.
A 1 CE Score indicates 51% or higher ranking for CED and BW EPD with actual BW over 87 lbs.
As the accuracy of the EPD can also change as the bull records progeny data, this will have an influence on the CED ranking. The bulls are DNA tested for Sire identification and GGP LD for genomic enhanced and improved accuracy of EPD’s. Another indicator of Birth wt. and calving ease is the breed make up of the cow or heifer as well as environment. By breeding high CED bulls for multiple generation to the cows and their resulting progeny, more accurate predictions of calving ease can be made. However this may have a negative affect as multiple generations are developed due to a decrease in pelvic area. It is a good idea to stay focused on CEM and select females with upper percentile rankings for CEM (Calving Ease Maternal).

The heifers are from our progressive breeding program, backed by generations of production records and genetic improvement. They are developed on a forage-based ration, are Bangs vaccinated, and will have received all pre-breeding vaccinations. The heifer’s are sorted for structural soundess and screened for disposition to ensure they meet the standards expected in a functional, productive cow herd.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW ........ Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
WW Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value)
YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
ADG Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)
MILK Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
ME ........ Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)
HPG Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)
CEM Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
STAY...... Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)
YG Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)
CW Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)
REA ....... Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.(Square Inches/High Value)
FAT ........ Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. (Inches/Low Value)

LEM STOCKYARD 2001 ET Sire to Lot 10

Lem Stockyard 2001 ET is an ABS stud sire that contributes extra growth with excellent calving ease and carass traits with exceptional phenotype.

LASO NO LIMITS G130L Sire to Lots 11, 12, 13

Laso No Limits G130L, we purchased semen on this bull in 2024, bred 17 cows, got 3 bulls and 10 heifers. It is too soon to tell how the heifers will be. But there is some real promise in his bulls. He shows great promise for multiple traits, including calving ease, stayability, marbling with above average growth in a very phenotypically correct and moderate structure.

SUTH PRIME PLUS 412L
Sire to Lots 25, 26, 43, 44
Suth Prime Plus 412L, I had noticed his sire with an incredible amount of marbling as well as good structure and maternal traits, so when we ran across 412L at Sutherland’s sale in 2024 he caught our attention. With a very progressive EPD profile and very stylish deep bodied phenotype, we decided we should buy him. A low Maintenance bull with top end ProS, marb, and stay.

Sire to Lot 14
Angelo Vanquish 2057, Vanquish brings with him a very unique pedigree. Going back to Glacier Red Angus one of the foundation herds of the breed. Super long body very correct foot and leg set with added thickness, and top it off with a dark red hair coat.

Sire to Lots 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 42

We selected VGW Cavalry 203 from the 2023 VGW Vic Westphal Red Angus spring sale. He was featured as lot 3; his EPD profile was what we were in search of as a source of maternal, marbling, and calving ease. Both of his grand sires are well-known sources for Carcass quality and sustainability, contributing to his high

Sire to Lots 2, 3, 4, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24

SUTH Propulsion 126K is another calving-ease bull purchased in 2023 from Sutherlin Farms Red Angus bull sale. Powerfully made meat wagon that ranked in the top 1% of the breed for Herd Builder Index and had one of the highest Stayability EPD’s in the sale. He scanned a 4.25 IMF, which Ratioed 172.

We purchased 609G in the 2020 Fritz Red Angus production sale, from Brady, Montana. Another bull selected for calving ease, high stayability, maternal and carcass traits. We bred him to replacement heifers that year, were impressed with his offspring. He is very correct on his feet and legs, has good body length, appears to hold his flesh very well, has an excellent disposition and is easy to be around. His sire Bieber Deep End B597 is a popular high accuracy, growth stud ranking in the top 9% for ProS and top 5% or better for GM, WW, YW, ADG, HPG, Marb, CW and REA. His dam Fritz Joanie 043 was a 10-year-old cow when she produced 609G, has weaned three more calves since then and still records a 363-day calving interval on 13 calves, with average ratios of BW 98, WW 105, YW 104, IMF 146, BF 103, REA 97, and records a 104 MPPA. We continue to use 609 on mature cows and he has not disappointed us, improving his growth and maternal traits with more accuracy and maintaining 18, top 6% CED. At 7 years old he still has excellent foot and leg structure.

LASO DORY JIBA Z141B

We selected Red River from Lautenschlager and Sons Red Angus in their 2021 Red bull rendezvous. As thick of a Red Angus bull as I have seen anywhere. He scanned an impressive 6.13 IMF ratio 108, 13.59 REA ratio100, at 1206 lb. An upper end growth bull without a huge frame he fills all of the spaces with muscle. A flushmate sister sold at the 2020 Bet on Red sale for $16,000. Knowing he was not a caving ease bull we put him on 2-year old heifers and had very good success calving. We have since noticed he makes a tremendous combination with our Simmental cross cows. Let’s not overlook the maternal power in this sire as well. The Dory Jiba Cow line goes back to Leachman breeding from the early days when they produced tremendous herd Bulls. The dam is well balanced with a deep rib and capacity, very well formed udder with excellent feet and legs. woodvbarxranch.com • 208.290.7782 • haywoodcattle@gmail.com

5L GENUINE 99-85Y
5L Genuine 2008-236L, We selected this Genuine son out of over 200 bulls at 5L at their 2024 spring sale. I don’t know if you could hang anymore meat on his frame. He is very square cornered with a good wide base, excellent thickness and depth with incredible fleshing ability on a moderate frame. He scanned an amazing 5.19 IMF and ratioed 106 WW, 106 YW, 119 IMF, and records 8 epds in the top 18% or better.

This small group of later calved bulls, are out of some really nice first calf heifers that did not get cataloged for the 2025 bull sale. They were wintered as their own contemporary group and pastured separate from any other cattle last summer. We co-mingled them with the other herd bulls as they were gathered around the first of August. They spent the rest of the summer and fall in the bull pasture until late November as the feed started getting short. They’ve been developed on a grass silage ration and bull developer pellet. The bulls remained in good condition through out the summer strictly on native grass. They were semen tested in late may last Spring as a selection criteria to ensure future potential breeders and will have past another breeding soundness exam as well as a trich test prior to sale day. With the value of replacement heifers in today’s market it is paramount that we ensure the best possible potential to get each and every one of them pregnant. It is a proven fact that an age advantaged bull will settle more females, then a younger bull. Don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of this Age Advantage!

Lot 1, 4065, With 11 traits in the top 18%, 7 of those in the top 10 % of the breed, this bull could easily make herd sire status. Top calving ease combined with top maternal fertility and marbling trait.

Lot 2, 4068, Phenotypically correct, this bull ranks high for profitability, carcass merit and growth with moderate calving ease. With the popularity of today’s producer owned beef marketing programs and operations this, is the type of bull that will add value to that product.

Lot 3, 4064, Profitability and sustainability. 7 traits in the top 17% with 5 in the top 5%. He ranks in the top 4% of the breed for Pro S, calving ease, and birth wt., and an amazing top 1% marbling, ranking him top 5% for gridmaster. Keep his heifers and feed his steers!!

Lot 4, 4004, Another very profitable calving ease bull with high maternal traits in his daughters.

Each Bull has a blood sample collected at weaning time, which is sent to the DNA lab for evaluation. Markers on each individual trait for each bull are identified which in turn are entered into the red angus data base and will add to the accuracy of each individual EPD for each animal. The result, (Genomic enhanced EPDs) increases the bulls EPD accuracies to the point as if they had sired a calf crop. The lab also does a parentage test which identifies the sire and dam precisely. Any potential genetic defects are also ruled out.

The Yearling bull we’re weaned in late September early October. They were then turned out on grass hay regrowth, and rotated through several fields until November 15th. They were fed a grass hay TMR ration with a bull developer pellet for a slow steady gain. It is important to remember that these bulls we’re born from late February thru early April.
We believe the bulls hold up better and will have a longer productive life if we develop them slower over a longer period of time. They will be just a little over a year old by sale day and we will continue to feed and care for them after the sale until delivery sometime in April. These bulls are not fat but remain very athletic in good condition and will continue to grow and develop as they breed cows through the summer.
