Welcome to our 22nd Cranview Gelbvieh & Angus sale and thank you for taking the time to review this year’s offering. We appreciate your interest and confidence in our breeding program.
The current beef industry is in an optimistic position. Strong cattle prices, steady demand, and renewed confidence throughout the supply chain continue to reward disciplined management and sound genetics. Given the latest cow numbers report, we believe the future is bright for quite some time.
As you can see from the offering, we have increased the number of Angus bulls this year. It is our long-range plan to continue to build our Angus cow base and maintain our Gelbvieh/ Balancer cow herd. In building our Angus cow herd, we have selected a handful of Angus females to create real world functional cattle. Traits such as sound feet and udders, disposition, and fertility, are essential to long-term profitability for us and for our customers. While we value EPD’s and performance data, it is not the only tools we use for selection criteria. Even though our cattle have gone to many parts of the country and have performed very well, we try to balance these tools with what is practical in our conditions and then make cattle that will thrive in our environment.
This year’s set of bulls & heifers is our strongest and most uniform set that we have ever offered. They are created through ET, AI, and natural service sires. All sale animals have genomic enhanced EPD’s along with parent verification. This not only ensures the most up-to-date EPD’s, $values, and a guaranteed pedigree but also improves the accuracy for these animals.
We invite you to join us March 28th to view the cattle, ask questions, and enjoy fellowship with other cattle producers on our sale day in Rugby, ND. It is truly the best day of the year for us and my hope is to see and visit with most of you.
Sincerely,
Rob, Bill and Noah Arnold

GENOMIC-ENHANCED EPDs
The major benefits of genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) are risk reduction through improved accuracies, value of time to assess breeding stock at a younger age, increased rate of genetic progress, and getting data on economically important traits which are expensive or difficult to measure. Many of the bulls and females selling have GE EPDs and it is denoted to the right of the lot number using these symbols: or
BIRTH WEIGHT IN EMBRYO TRANSPLANT (ET) BULLS SELLING
The bulls selling as a result of ET all have GE EPDs listed in the sale book to increase the accuracy. ET calves do not have ratios for birth and performance weights, as they are raised by a recipient cow that will not give you the true accuracy for birth and performance as will the genetics. The birth weight in ET calves is completely irrelevant and has no indication as to the expected birth weights of their calves. Please use the EPDs for calving ease and birth weight to help with the selection of the bulls in the sale offering.
American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and Economic Indexes
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.
30-month Pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Docility (DOC): Is reported as a percentage, with higher numbers indicating a higher percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Scrotal Circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring.
Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Mature Weight (MWT): Body weight of cows adjusted to six years of age at body condition score 5. MWT is reported in pounds and is computed from a genetic model that leverages information from weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and mature weights of cows. Reported weights are adjusted for both age at observation and for body condition. Body weights of cows 2 to 12 years of age are utilized in the evaluation.
Cow Energy Requirement-Yearly (CERY): Mature body weight, lactation potential and birth weight are primary predictors of energy requirements. Mature Weight, Milk and Birth Weight EPD are utilized to inform prediction equations from beef cow nutrition research to estimate differences in energy requirement over a production year. The CERY EPD is reported in pounds of Total Digestable Nutrients (TDN) required for an age 6 cow.
Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Fat (CFAT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI): The genetic difference in pounds of expected average daily dry matter intake of progeny.
$GAIN: Reports the difference in expected marginal value of gain less the cost of feed to achieve that gain. Reported in dollars of marginal profit with more positive values representing increased efficiency and profit.
Maternal Profit Index (MPI): In this production scenario, Gelbvieh bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with surplus calves marketed at weaning, with replacement heifers retained from the calf crop. EPDs weighted in this index are Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM), Weaning Weight (WW), Milk (MILK), Mature Weight (MWT), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), Stayability (STAY), and Heifer Pregnancy (HP). Mature weight is the primary driver and represents the significant cost of maintenance energy requirement in the cow-calf sector. Weaning Weight and Milk (expressed in pounds of calf weaning weight) represent the principal revenue stream. Stayability helps account for differences in replacement costs in the system and the effect of heifer retention on revenue streams. This index should be used by commercial cattlemen whose production scenario includes the traditional marketing of calves at weaning and replacement retention from the herd.
Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™): Envisioned as a completely terminal index, FPI assumes all calves are marketed as finished beef carcasses priced on a value-based grid. Thus, it shouldn’t be used in production scenarios where replacements are kept from these matings. The new FPI formulation more precisely weights Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs) available for selection, including the key carcass traits of Carcass Weight (CW), Ribeye Area (REA), and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) that were not included in the original formulation. The new FPI also weights Fat Thickness (CFAT), post-weaning Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Calving Ease Direct (CED).
Carcass value determined by carcass weight, quality, and yield grade influencing traits accounts for approximately 75% of the index as principal revenue drivers. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) captures differences in expected costs to the terminal carcass endpoint.
Total Profit Index (TPI): Combining replacement female retention from the herd with carcass endpoint for marketed surplus heifers and all steers, TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. Because of the challenges faced by commercial cattlemen by the antagonisms in selection for this production scenario, TPI includes the largest and most diverse set of EPDs in the model, including carcass traits as the primary revenue drivers with cow Mature Weight (MWT), Stayability (STAY) and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) as cost drivers.
CRANVIEW TETON N70 • SELLS AS LOT 1
WOW! This is a herd bull opportunity. Grand Teton was my pick from the flush brothers at Lost River Livestock in 2022. I mated him to Firefly J11 (Cornhusker Red female) and it was a huge success. There are 6 females in our heifer pen from this same flush...check out her natural Balancer heifer, Lot 48, out of Rise Above. Not only does Teton Lot 1 look like a herd bull, but his EPDs are impecable...only 2 EPDs are lower than the 50 percentile which puts him in a class of his own. So, you have calving ease, performance, carcass, and maternal in one complete package. Who says you can’t have it all? Help yourself to an extremely good bull. He is a complete package! Will use this bull in our AI program.

This bull is one of the best bulls in the offering for many reasons...his muscle mass, his volume, his balance from front to back, how he carries himself, and his overall presence make him an easy choice for me. Excellent tenderness score on this bull and is in the top 1% for marbling. I see “Prime Beef” written all over his calves. He scores a 6 for tenderness. His dam is a Dam of Merit. SYDGEN EXCEED 3223
Woodhill Merit contributes outstanding carcass qualities. Most of his calves will all be in the top 1-5% for marbling. He scored extremely high for tenderness and seems to pass that along in his offspring. The Merit bull compliments the Gelbvieh genetics extremely well phenotypically.
WOODHILL MERIT F100-H224 • SIRE
CRANVIEW GUNNER N53
This might be the widest topped bull in the sale offering. The dam side of his pedigree goes all the way back to the great Farah cow that Eagle Pass created and propigated so well. We purchased her daughter (Tiara T003) in the National Sale and never regretted it for a single moment. The 935C cow is an extension to this lineage and she has been a very consistent producer (101 WW ratio on 9 calves). This bull along with Lot 13 calf are sired by the Gunner son we retained from our 2024 bulls. Perfermance & carcass are this bull’s strengths.
The Gunner cattle work well in our program. They add a tick more frame and length which compliments our cows. His carcass profile is 2nd to none in the purebred population which therefore improves most of the cattle he is mated to. Since Gunner 947G is a red Lone Star son, it is going to take us a bit to have homo black sons from this lineage. The L80 son is doing a great job moving us in that direction. The sons of L80 would be two generations black, so odds are very good you will get mostly black calves if bred to black cows.
One word would describe this bull…STUD! This is the stoutest bull in the offering! Appreciate the volume, the bone, and the performance this bull offers along with his carcass merit and you should have a sale topping set of steers.
Bull that ranks in the top 1% for Weaning weight and yearling weight. Ranks in the top 1% for Carcass weight and top 2% for $gain. This bull’s dam is recognized as a Dam of Distinction and has a WW ratio of 108 on 8 calves. Tenderness 6!

THE TARGETING THE BRAND™ LOGO
The Certified Angus Beef ® Targeting the Brand™ logo is used to identify any registered Angus bull with a minmum marbling EPD (Marb) of +0.65 and an Angus Grid Value Index ($G) of +55 or higher. Sire-identified carcass data from more than 8,600 records in the American Angus Association database show these minimum thresholds for Marb and $G achieve an average of 50% CAB acceptance. While a sire’s genetic potential only accounts for a portion of marbling performance in a calf crop, these benchmarks provide commercial cattlemen a starting place to identify genetics that will go on to bring performance premiums on quality beef grids.
CranviewAngus Bulls
It’s always tricky trying to pick a lead-off bull, but this bull definitely has earned his stripes for our Angus bulls. Sired by one of the most sought after sires in the Angus breed right now...Shiefelbein Top Gun. This bull’s dam (Supermama 8022) was purchased in the Troy & Lorna Marshal Dispersion. The Top Gun calves are appreciated for their size, performance, foot correctness, carcass merit and docility. He ranks in the top 10% for functional longevity and he ranks in the top 3% for $Maternal. Top 25% for docility! This is our first larger group of Angus bulls and we have to earn our stripes too; so it’s hard to visualize how this calf would compare in bigger programs. I believe this calf has the overall visual presence and the genomic package that would push him to the top of many Angus programs. A complete package bull!
Top Gun is one of the most massively constructed bulls in a 6.5 frame and is an elite bull in the $C category. Top Gun offers the rare combination of elite HP, Claw, Angle, Marbling and REA. Initiatlly, semen was extremely hard to get so there aren’t alot of progeny yet, but the ones that are out there are creating a buzz and are highly sought after. I think you are just seeing a sample of what’s to come. We have more of these on the way for 2027.
Sired by the popular calving ease sire Boyd Justification. He is the friendliest bull in the entire offering…if the pen had auditions to play Norm in the sitcom “Cheers” this guy would win. He ranks in the top 35% for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight and Yearling weight with excellent foot scores. He ranks in the top 10% for SC which usually correlates to maternal females if you keep them. His $Maternal score puts him in the top 15% of the breed. Heifer bull!

Firefly N502 is as complete of a Balancer female as you can make them. We have sold many good females over the years and this one ranks with the best. She is a broody phenotypic standout that holds it all together in a beautiful feminine package. I would expect her to be a powerhouse with her WW in the top 1% and her YW in the top 10%. Her maternal Index puts her in the top 1% while her Total Profit & Feeder Profit Indexes are in the top 10%. It is getting harder & harder to find impactful females that fit the industry’s demands for phenotype and genotype. Here is a great opportunity with a very complete female! Check out the purebred maternal flush sisters, Lots 50-55, in this offering...they are consistent and they are good as well.
Lots 50 to 55: Selling choice on 3 of 6 Full ET Sisters
If you are looking for fresh PB genetics, these heifers should be in your wheelhouse. Their phenotypes is maybe a little different than their maternal Balancer sister, but they are consistent and good. Grand Teton K50 was our choice from the Lost River Livestock sale in 2022 and FireFly J11 (Cornhusker Red) was my pick from PHG female sale in the fall of 2021. J11’s genotype combined with the phenotype of Grand Teton produced an extremely exciting package. There isn’t much that seperates these flush sisters so we plan to sell choice on 3 of these 6 females.
Grand Teton has earned his stripes siring cattle that are easily appreciated for phenotype and EPD strength. He was our choice of the Pay Pal sons sold in the 2023 Lost River Livestock offering. Considering there are 19 traits or indexes that the AGA measures, this bull has 15 of them in the upper 50%. His daughters look like they are going to be easy keepers. The daughters have the genotype to make a positive improvement in any program.

A tremendous amount of opportunity with this PB heifer. Along with her physical presence, she already possesses a great carcass profile for a PB with extremely good performance numbers. It would be extremely easy to breed Balancer cattle that will read well or find a -2.5 BW bull that compliments her genotype and breed PB cattle that read well. Whichever way you decide, you can’t hardly mess this heifer up. In my opinion, this is the kind of heifer a young person can build a herd around regardless if its PB or Balancer.
