Herd Health: Herd health is excellent. All cattle have been vaccinat-

ed and boosted with modified live IBR, BVD-PI, BRSV, Lepto 5, Vibrio, and 7 way. They have also been treated with dewormer. All cattle have tested negative for BVD-PI. All bulls have passed a BSE and semen evaluation and tested negative for Trichomoniasis using the PCR test. (see Trich explanation on page 5) Trucking: Bring your trailer to the sale and receive a $125 rebate per bull. All bulls will be Trich tested prior to the sale so health papers for interstate shipment can be written sale day! Delivery: We offer free delivery on bull purchases for the first 700 miles and free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S. FOR TOTAL BULL PURCHASES OVER $20,000. Delivery for purchases under $20,000 but over 700 miles will be at cost for only those miles over 700, prorated among bulls still on the load. Please provide a facility where we may unload, sort, and reload. If unable to, please make an arrangement with a neighbor, salebarn, etc. We make every effort to get your bulls as close as possible, usually right to your place. However, because some deliveries are made with a 53’ ground load or pot belly trailer, we may consolidate deliveries to one location in the general area. On some long distance deliveries, we may ask you to meet our truck to lessen the time animals are in transit. Please have other cattle near unloading area so bulls are not alone. All deliveries and injuries are at buyer’s risk unless the optional Bull Warranty, (see page 6), has been purchased. Selection Guide - Pasture Proven, Profit Driven Genetics Frame Score: Beginning with our sale in 2011, we no longer assign a numerical number to frame score. Frame score is the

least consistent of any objectively measured trait. It is highly variable due to facilities, equipment used, and the way the animal is standing at the time. We have circled animals around to be re-measured and can seldom duplicate a measurement. In addition, measurements can vary widely due to environmental differences. Our fall bulls have posted an adjusted yearling frame score average almost a whole frame score lower some years, than our Spring bulls, and yet mature to the same size. This is due to the slower rate of growth of the fall bulls while on the cow. We now report frame score as Moderate (Mod.), Moderate minus (Mod.-), or Moderate plus (Mod. +). Moderate is our most frequent observation and will correspond to around a frame score 5 mature size.

Bull Development: Shown on the cover are some Fall bulls making their way up one of our rough, rocky hills to the feed bunk. This is how we develop bulls into fit, athletic individuals capable of covering miles of rough country while servicing your cows.

Dam information: The bottom line of each catalog lot lists information about the bull’s dam. It includes the age of the dam,

as well as her mature weight and body condition score at weaning. We also provide that dam’s MPPA (most Probable Producing Ability) which compares the repeatability of that cow’s production as measured by her calves’ relative weaning weight in our program.

Percentile Rank: Use the line right under the EPD listing to see where a specific bull’s EPDs ranks vs bulls of his age, in the

Red Angus breed. For example, if a bull has 10% under his CED EPD - that means he ranks in the best 10% of the breed for Calving Ease Direct when compared to similar aged animals. This can be an excellent tool when you are unfamiliar with Red Angus EPDs.

Genomic Testing & EPD Accuracy: Every Red Angus bull in this sale has enhanced EPD accuracy due to genomic

testing, which is indicated by the “GGP” located in the catalog beneath each bull’s name and to the right of his registration number. For many traits, genomic testing provides the same amount of data as a bull’s first year’s natural service calf crop. This is especially valuable for carcass and reproductive traits where phenotypes are measured later in progeny’s life. Mushrush Red Angus invests in DNA testing so that our bull customers can make the best informed decisions possible. We know that genomic testing will move some bull’s EPDs up while moving others down - but they will all be more accurate (closer to the animal’s true genetic merit) because of genomic testing. Along with enhanced EPD accuracy, parental validation is another benefit of genomic testing. Unless otherwise indicated, all bulls in this sale are DNA verified to both sire and dam to the greatest extent possible.

ME Accuracies: Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement for RAAA, has assured us that the printed Maintenance Energy

EPD has been corrected utilizing all of our records from past years. As explained on page 8, the migration to BOLT processing system has left two EPDs to still be calculated using the former blending method. ME is one and it has been an ongoing issue for Mushrush Red Angus. While we are confident that the EPD has been correctly calculated, the accuracy reflected on the web site may still be erroneous.

Trichomoniasis Testing: The chance that you will infect your cow herd with Trich by purchasing a bull from any reputable seedstock provider is almost nonexistent. However, to combat this costly disease many states are ramping up testing requirements for animals entering from other states. Therefore we made the decision to perform a Trichomoniasis PCR test on every bull in the sale. This will assure that you can bring your trailer sale day and get your purchases home without testing delays. Sortable Spreadsheet: Refer to the sortable catalog data on our website www.MushrushRedAngus.com and this catalog for the most accurate and up to date information on our sale cattle.

Supplement Sheet: The Spring bulls were scanned for carcass merit on February 16, 2019 - which was too late for the

information to go into the EPD calculations for this catalog. A supplement sheet with updated carcass EPDs will be available online and at the registration table sale day. This sheet will also include any OUT cattle since the printing of the catalog. Please check our website frequently for the most current and up-to-date copy. 5

Selection Tools - Using EPDs After making a visual appraisal we highly recommend you use EPDs to determine which bulls best fit your production goals. It must be remembered that actual weights and measurements cannot be used to compare individuals across contemporary groups, let alone across herds. A contemporary group is simply a group of calves of same sex , similar age and identical management, e.g., calves that have had equal opportunity to perform. All actual weights, including birth weight, can be affected by environment, feed, age of dam, and even at what point they are taken. For that reason do not compare adjusted or actual weights between our Spring and Fall born bulls or cows.

Consider the following:

If we scanned our bulls at 18 months and published actual REA of impressive size. • Does this make these bulls genetically superior for Rib Eye Area? No! It is scientifically proven that cold weather prior to calving will increase birth weight. • Are these cattle genetically predisposed to higher birth weight? No! In the Flint Hills of Kansas, fall calves winter extremely hard. The grass is at its lowest protein (4%) and the weather can be very harsh. On the other hand, spring born calves hit their stride about the time green grass starts growing. They traditionally will have higher weaning weights when compared to the fall born calves using identical genetics. Consequently it is common for our Spring born calves to wean heavier than our fall born calves due to environment. • Does this mean our spring born bulls will sire calves with higher weaning weights than our Fall born bulls? No! For the reasons stated above, it would be misleading for us (or any seedstock provider) to promote individual animals using actual data. Comparisons made across contemporary groups using actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors.

To accurately compare across contemporary groups and across herds, EPDs are your best tools!!!!

A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which is ‘best’. EPDs are merely an estimate of each animal’s genetic merit for the traits represented. It is up to producers to determine which is the best fit for their operation. The EPD profile that works best for my herd and management situation may not necessarily be the best fit for your environment, herd composition, management style or marketing strategy. By correctly using EPDs we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. The key to using EPDs is knowing what you have, what you need, and making selections accordingly. Also remember that EPDs predict relative performance not actual performance. On average, calves from a high accuracy +90 YW EPD bull are expected to weigh 20 pounds more than calves from a high accuracy +70 pound YW EPD bull at one year of age. Whether they express this added weight depends on if the environment or management, including feed availability, allows them to.

If you would like to add coverage for injury or death of your bull, you may purchase the optional Mushrush Red Angus warranty. We would like to emphasize that this is not insurance (like that purchased through a broker), rather an additional service offered by Mushrush Red Angus. • Coverage is good for a period of 5 months following purchase. • Cost is 5% of the purchase price paid at settlement. • Details and limitations available at checkout. • In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards the purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage. Lions and Tigers and BOLT, oh my! Biometric Open Language Tools- the name alone is enough to bring fear to the eyes of the average cowboy, so just what is it? BOLT is a revolutionary state of the art software system that calculates EPD’s for the IGS Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation. It is a ‘single step’ system meaning that it simultaneously combines pedigree, performance, and genomic information into a single calculation. Prior to BOLT, each component was calculated separately then blended together for the final EPD. In cowman words, what does that mean? The RAAA along with 11 other breeds has a new and improved method for calculating EPDs to enhance the accuracy of selection decisions when utilizing EPDs and Indexes. So, that’s it, really nothing to fear at all, and improved EPD’s! There are a few points that the cattleman needs to remember when using EPDs calculated with BOLT. • The EPD’s are more reliable. The ‘single step’ process combined with the IGS database of 17 million animals creates a more accurate evaluation. • CED, CEM and Stayability EPD’s join the growth and carcass EPD’s in being directly comparable across all the IGS partner breeds. The most notable are Gelbveih and Simmental. • Base Change!!! The standardization with the IGS breeds resulted in a base change for some traits. Most notable is the change in CED which had a significant shift to a higher base. It also caused some reranking of animals due to the increased accuracy of BOLT. This means that last year’s top 10% CED of 10 is closer to a 15 or 16 CED with the BOLT system. For this reason, we encourage you to use the percentile rank listed in our catalog to avoid confusion. • The new BOLT system takes former outliers from both sides of the spectrum and ‘pushes’ them toward the center. It is a squeezing of the bell curve. This means that herds like Mushrush Red Angus that had a large number of animals in that outlier status - ranking in the top 1 – 5% for CED for example, will see a reduction in the number of animals reaching those percentiles. Make no mistake however, while the numbers might have changed these are the same ‘no worry’ calving ease genetics you are accustomed to. The chart below is an actual representation of our whole herd HB index. The orange line represents the old system and the blue line represents HB formulated using EPDs from BOLT. • EPD’s are recalculated weekly using all new data and records submitted to the database. The old system calculated EPD’s two times a year. You may now see a slightly different EPD profile on the website than the one in the catalog. This is due to the continued updating as information gets reported. • The other breeds all have their own EPDs that are not used by the Red Angus breed. In addition, the RAAA has some of its own too. These EPDs are not currently calculated by BOLT. They are Heifer Pregnancy and Maintenance Energy. These are still calculated using the blending method. You may see some issues with the accuracy of our ME EPD. While the EPD calculation has been corrected, the accuracies may still be at 0. Rest assured that the many years of mature cow weight and BCS have been incorporated into the printed ME EPD.

18-month-old Fall Bulls Weaning is a full year away from sale day, so we grow these fall-born bulls a little slower. They spent the summer months on GrowSafe bunks collecting feed efficiency data. Winter was spent in our rough, rocky bull development trap maturing them into hard-muscled fit bulls who know how to handle tough terrain and can travel. Being developed in a rock quarry a group of these Impact sons would be ideal to run in a large, rugged multi-sire pasture on a couple hundred heifers. The Accent son breaks the antagonisms by ranking in the easiest calving 16% and the fastest gaining 6% of Red Angus. E726 gained 21% faster, converted feed 19% more efficiently and if we consider the cost of his ration and the value of his gain he was 31% more profitable than the average of our fall bulls. His dam comes pretty close to being that elusive 1200 lb cow the industry says they want – she maintains herself in good BCS and still produces 5% better than the average of the herd.

Capturing Profit through improved Feed Efficiency For years we have been measuring differences in gain without any knowledge of what those extra pounds of gain cost. Yet cattle feeders have told us for years that feed conversion is one of their major profit drivers, and we know that significant differences exist for feed conversion - often within the same pen of cattle. Like Gain, Quality Grade, Carcass Weight and Yield Grade, Feed Conversion is a trait that influences the value of the feeder cattle our customers sell - because it has a significant impact on the profitability of those cattle once they hit the feedyard. According to geneticists, 65-70% of the genetic variation for feed intake is explained through finding those differences in gain. Simply said, most of the time - the animals that gain the most also eat the most. But what about those that defy the antagonisms? Just as there are low birthweight cattle that still excel in growth, observations of feed intake and gain find cattle that: • Eat 10% more but Gain 40% more - that’s efficient • Eat Average but gain 20% more - that’s efficient • Gain Average but eat 20% less - that’s efficient too • We also find those that eat 20% more and gain 20% less - which may be the most important use of feed intake data. So we set out to identify those genetics that convert feed most profitably. To begin that process, we invested in individual animal feed intake data, which measures the daily Dry Matter Intake (DMI) of individual animals over a prescribed feeding period. By evaluating DMI in conjunction with the Average Daily Gain data we’ve collected for decades now allows us to rank bulls for how efficiently they convert pounds of feed into pounds of finished animal. Realizing this data is new to many customers we wanted a simplified means through which to make this information available. Thus, we developed a feed efficiency star rating system. Here’s how it works and how to use it. The Mushrush Feed Efficiency Star Rating system goes beyond simply dividing daily Feed Intake by the number of pounds an animal gains each day. Instead, it looks at the value of that daily gain against the cost of the daily intake. The result helps identify individuals whose phenotypes predict offspring that will be more profitable to feed. Our “Star” grading system for feed efficiency should be interpreted as somewhat of a “Good, Better Best” system where the more stars, the greater the potential to sire calves with improved feed efficiency. You can interpret each bulls efficiency star data as follows: 5 Star Feed Efficiency = bulls expected to sire calves that are the Most Profitable to Feed from a cost of gain standpoint 1 Star Feed Efficiency = bulls expected to have the least potential to improve profitability through improved feed efficiency

Spring Yearling Red Angus Bulls Spring Bulls Feeding Spring Born bulls offered as yearlings is a delicate balance. We have to feed them hard enough to manifest differences in growth and carcass traits but not so much as to make bulls fat and unfit. As with the Fall born bulls, these Spring yearlings are allowed to roam in large traps, getting plenty of exercise to get into condition to handle large groups of females without falling apart. The bulls were scanned for carcass merit on February 16, 2019, too late for the information to go into the EPD calculations for this catalog. A supplement sheet with updated EPDs will be available online and at the sale. Scrotal was taken 2/12/2019 and is the actual measurement. It was not adjusted for age.

“We have been using semen from Mushrush bulls for 4 years and have had great results each year. We just calved our first big set of Mushrush sired home-raised heifers and are really pleased how they are doing in our herd. They have been the easiest fleshing heifers we’ve ever had and are tremendous mothers right from the start. They take excellent care of their calves and are very easy to work with. We also raise custom embryo calves for Mushrush Red Angus, along with 5 other ranches covering 3 breeds. The Mushrush calves are the best calves we raise from our perspective. By far they have the best disposition and are easy to work with, even as they mature. The Mushrush bull calves weigh right in with high growth bulls of other breeds but in a smaller frame and with more thickness thru out. The heifer calves show their easy fleshing ability carrying more condition with less feed than other embryo calves we raise. Sale Terms & Conditions Bidding: Each animal on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the highest bidder. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalog. Terms: Terms of the sale are cash unless prior credit arrangements have been made with the sellers. Purchasers Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Care will be provided by the seller free for 48 hours for those hauling their own. Trucking: Trucking will be provided at purchasers risk for free on bull purchases for the first 700 miles, nationwide for purchased over $20,000, or free care until May 1. See page 3 for details. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. Health: All cattle will have official health certificates to allow shipment anywhere in the U.S. Breeders guarantee: All bulls sold are guaranteed for fertility, structural soundness and disposition for a period of six months following the sale. Each bull has passed a breeding soundness exam including semen test. Any bull showing difficulties in one of these areas may, if in healthy condition, be returned to the site of the sale at buyers expense. The seller, at his option, may either refund the purchase price to the buyer or provide credit towards purchase of a replacement animal. All claims regarding breeding difficulties must be accompanied by a letter from a licensed veterinarian to that effect, such statement also indicating that the difficulty is not the result of injury or illness following the delivery. Buyers wishing for protection against injury or death of their bull/s may purchase the optional Bull Warranty (page 6). Liability: Every precaution will be taken for the safety and comfort of those who attend the auction. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk, and the owner, auctioneer, clerks, and other employees assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. Genetic Defects: We have examined all pedigrees and performed DNA testing on individuals or pedigrees deemed susceptible to possessing a known genetic defect. We fully guarantee all animals in this sale to be free of any genetic defect monitored by the Red Angus Association of American on the date of the sale. If the buyer can prove otherwise with a parent verified DNA test, we will replace the animal in question in accordance with our Breeders guarantee. â€œFor over a decade, Butterfield Trail Ranch in Dona Ana and Luna counties, New Mexico has relied on Mushrush genetics. Initially, our intent was to increase Angus traits in a Beefmaster herd. Under the desert conditions we face, calving ease was a primary issue. With Mushrush low birthweight bulls, we havenâ€™t pulled a calf since 2008. What was unexpected, though, was the relative heat tolerance of the reds over the blacks. In an incident where illegals drained a water storage (we are within sight of the Mexican Border), a group of heifers were cut off from water. Death loss occurred in several of the blacks, but the reds survived. It made firmer believers out of us! Our crossbred Red Angus herd has become our featured image. We like them and we appreciate greatly the partnership we now share with Joe, Connie, Daniel, and the Mushrush family. They are true cattle people.â€?

In Loving Memory Robert (Bob) Mushrush June 15, 1929 – May 1, 2018

Growing up in town, Bob dreamed of a life in livestock production. He attended Kansas State, majoring in Animal Husbandry. While there he served on the K-State livestock judging team under the oversight of the legendary Don Good. Highlights were his team being overall champion at the 1950 International Livestock Exposition in Chicago, and him being the high individual at the following National Western Stock Show in Denver. Following graduation and a short stint in the Air Force, Bob and Oma Lou returned to the Flint Hills to start a small commercial cow outfit from scratch. After the devastating drought of the late 50’s withered crops and grassland and with a new family to care for, Bob was forced to seek outside employment in town. He continued that until retirement in 1991. During that time Oma Lou kept up the day to day ranch activities until Joe and Connie returned from KSU in 1980. Shortly thereafter 10 registered Red Angus cows were added to the operation. This started the journey to where Mushrush Red Angus is today. Bob spent his retirement years enjoying his grandchildren and proudly admiring the herds of red cows grazing the green pastures of the Kansas Flinthills. On May 1st, Robert Mushrush, patriarch of Mushrush Red Angus, joined Oma Lou, his wife of 65 years in caring for the Lord’s herd. While he is missed greatly, we must put our selfishness aside and recognize that he has reached his ultimate goal of being where he wants to be with whom he wants to be.
