Sunflower Genetics 30th Annual Production Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the 30th Annual Sunflower Genetics Production Sale!

Hard to believe, I’ve typed this welcome letter 30 times or that we’ve been selling bulls since 1981. For over 45 years we’ve been building the genetic base you have the opportunity to select from today. Equally hard to believe is what started as a dream of some kid that wanted to raise better cattle, has grown into what it is today. Probably more mind boggling, the family that has grown along with the cattle. I don’t think either Mary or myself could have ever dreamed how blessed we’ve been to have the family we have alongside us in this lifelong endeavor.

“Incredible” is the best word to describe today’s cattle market. It’s rewarding to finally see quality cattle bring the value they deserve. With historically low cattle numbers, these market conditions are likely to remain favorable for several years. Simply put, quality pounds pay.

The bulls you invest in today will shape your calf crop for years, and those genetics matter more than ever. Bulls that add performance and carcass value, backed by strong maternal traits create long-term returns, especially in the replacement females you keep. At Sunflower Genetics and Sunflower Feeders, we see firsthand how balanced genetics perform both in the pasture and in the feedlot.

The idea that you must choose between performance and maternal ability simply isn’t true. A well-built cow herd can excel across all segments of the beef market. You don’t have to compromise. You can have it all.

Hands down, this is the most impressive group of genetics we have ever offered. The bulls are phenomenal, the females outstanding and we have a special offering of several of our donors. They are our future and today you can reap the results of 45 years of selection.

If you have any questions or comments, please call any of the Sunflower Family. We look forward to seeing you on March 20th!

ONE BRAND - ONE PHILOSOPHY

Sunflower Genetics works with several herds raising bulls and or embryo transfer calves. These herds have the same standards and philosophies as SFG. Calves that meet our criteria are delivered at weaning and developed within our program. These bulls have to pass the same strict standards, just as ours to earn their brand.

Consequently some of the bulls may not have Sunflower Genetics listed as the breeder.

FREE DELIVERY to KS, MO, AR, OK, NE & IA

We offer free delivery to KS, MO, AR, OK, NE & IA. Free delivery will start soon after the sale. In some cases, we may ask you to meet a truck in your area to minimize time the animals are in transit. If you need your purchases on a certain timeline, we will do our best to get them to you but cannot guarantee we can deliver them on a certain day.

Other states, we can get animals to you economically and guarantee it to not cost over $500 if we arrange shipping.

EXCLUSIVE BRED HEIFER OPTION

We extend to you an opportunity to buy an open yearling heifer at our sale in the spring and turn her into a guaranteed bred heifer in the fall. For an additional $600/heifer, we are willing to keep the heifer through the summer and provide breeding and development services.

Sunflower principles

In 1981 when we sold our very 1st bull my Dad, Maurice Gleason, who had been in sales his entire life laid out what would be our master plan over the years. He explained business would be long lasting if we followed 3 simple rules. After over 40 years we still use those 3 rules in every decision we make.

PROVIDE SOMETHING THE CUSTOMER NOT ONLY NEEDS BUT, WANTS TO BUY.

This one is simple. Everyone needs a bull but wants more. We like to sell bulls to cattlemen that want more from their cowherd. More calving ease, more growth, more carcass traits, more maternal, more longevity and more customer service. Fewer problems = more family time and more financial reward.

NO SURPRISES.

When we first started selling bulls, they were red and white. When the market demanded black bulls Dad stressed, if someone wanted a black bull, they wanted black calves. Ever since, we have worked to make homozygous black cattle. Same with the polled gene. Today most are homozygous black and homozygous polled. We have worked to breed like to like to provide consistency in our genetics. The best surprise is no surprise.

THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

The final but most important rule. We have been on both sides of this rule. It’s been said many times to treat customers the same you want to be treated. We feel we should treat you better. We believe very strongly in our genetics and love hearing great success stories. But we also want to hear if there are any issues that we can improve. Providing the best customer service is our goal. Our 4 year guarantee on feet and legs and semen, along with free delivery, care of cattle after the sale, our heifer breeding program, assistance in marketing your calves along with any other service we can help are all areas that we provide. We don’t want to just sell you a bull, we want to be a complete genetic source for years to come.

Genomic-Enhanced EPDs

At weaning time we gather tissue samples on every calf. That tissue sample is then sent in for genetic testing. Parentage conformation, color status, polled status, any genetic defeats, and genomically enhanced (GE) EPDs. GE EPDs help us provide you a more accurate, more predictable picture of what that bull is going to do for your cow herd. Understandably nothing replicates the real world when it comes to results but all of these steps help us to provide the most predictable genetics we can minimizing surprises.

“Using genomic-enhanced EPDs for selection of young breeding stock provides a level of precision and reliability that’s never been available to producers before.”

DOCILITY SCORES

New this year are docility scores on the bulls. It is noted in the footnotes. We have always stressed docility in our cattle. Selection pressure on docility begins on day 1. After we take weights, we put 2 or 3 bulls in a 12-foot alley way and walk them back and forth noting docility, feet scores and other factors that impact their value as bull. We also constantly make mental notes of docility every time we’re with the cattle. Scores range from 1 to 6. We eliminate 3 and over scores. Honestly, we rarely have a 3 or over.

1 (Docile) Calm, gentle, easy to handle and moves slowly.

2 (Restless) Calm in most situations but does get restless in stressful situations

3 (Nervous) Not puppy dog tame but manageable with some caution.

FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE

Knowing that the end product merit of our genetics are not only important from an economic standpoint but also from an industry longevity standpoint. Cattle must not only be profitable but provide a nutritious, healthy and enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. For years we have selected cattle that not only excel in the pasture but in the feedlot and on the rail.

We believe every breeder should feed their steers out and collect carcass data. As a supplier of genetics to the commercial cowherds, a breeder who doesn’t feed cattle is doing a disservice to his customers. We have fed our cull steers for many years with great success.

BULLS ARE DEVELOPED IN LARGE PENS

Striving to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat, is our main goal in developing bulls for our customers. We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Bulls are developed in pens that offer plenty of wide open space for the bulls to exercise. These pens are surrounded by high tensile electric fence.

Trust in our program and take advantage of our 45+ years and counting experience of making SimAngusTM Genetics. Through the years we have gained valuable knowledge about what purebred genetics complement one another. We have first hand witnessed the advantage of heterosis and the complementarity of the Angus and Simmental breeds.

What is Heterosis?

• Mating 2 different purebred parents

• A genetic improvement of both parents

• Has eliminated purebreds in the plant, poultry & swine industry because they work.

Why Simmental & Angus?

• Breeds complement one another while having different strengths

• Both breeds have potential to be homozygous black

• Achieve maximum heterosis while not sacrificing consistency

• Combine 2 of the industries most powerful breeds

Guide to Heterosis

“In my daily interactions with our current Top Dollar Angus Feeding partners, and in conversations with new feeders exploring our program, one key point consistently stands out: feedlot owners and managers emphasize the NEED for healthy cattle that grow quickly and efficiently while producing high-quality carcasses with superior carcass weights, yields and marbling.

Sunflower Genetics has always been, and remains, committed to meeting these market demands. They provide their customers with proven genetics to address our feeder customer’s needs while positioning Sunflower Genetics customers for future success.”

Nathan Smith nate@topdollarangus.com (620) 546-4839

What is Top Dollar Angus?

Genetic certification of superior Angus feeder cattle is an idea whose time has come. The U.S. feeder cattle market doesn’t always distinguish the best Angus calves from generic black or red-hided feeder cattle.

Top Dollar Angus is the first and only certification program for commercial feeder cattle focused exclusively on Angus and Red Angus-based cattle with top 25% growth and carcass traits.

Their Mission:

To help commercial cow-calf and registered seed stock producers, who’ve invested in top-end Angus and Red Angus genetics, capture more value from their calf crops.

How does this benefit SFG customers?

“After years of feeding our steer calves we understand the added value that comes with quality genetics. By selecting bulls with the “Top Dollar” logo you unlock the ability to market your calf crop through the Top Dollar Angus program.”

Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes

Definition of Terms

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Color and Polled Status:

Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.

Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.

Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.

Rib-eye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.

Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.

Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.

Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) & Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR): Weight ratios compare an individual to the rest of his or her contemporary group at a given time. Ratios are expressed as a number with 100 being average. Any animal above 100 performed better than the average calf in their respective contemporary group. ET calves and twins do not ratio for WW or YW.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

Average Rankings for SFG Bulls

A Word on Selection Indexes

Simmental

TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus firstcalf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

What do I need to know before choosing the right index?

1. What kind of cow herd do I have/want?

2. How do I market my calves?

3. Do I retain my own replacement heifers?

4. What are my feed and labor resources?

5. Where do I want to take my cow herd/business?

Angus

$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size.

$M—Maternal Weaned Calf Value. Expressed in dollars per head. Predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves.

$B—Beef Value. Expressed in dollars per carcass. Use if retain ownership of calves through the feedlot phase and market them on a carcass grid.

$C—Comined Value. Expressed in dollars per head. Combines $M and $B. Use if keeping heifers and retaining ownership of cull heifers and male progeny through the feedlot phase and market on a quality based carcass merit grid.

What selection index is right for my cow herd?

To keep it simple if you sell your calves at weaning and retain your own replacement heifers use these two indexes. If you value reproductive efficiency, longevity, calving ease and keeping feed resources to a minimum take into account API and $M when selecting your next bull.

If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

Ratios Help tell the whole story

As you have probably noticed, we have not put our weaning and yearling weights in the catalog. Two very simple reasons for doing this:

First, raw weights don’t tell the whole story.

How they compare to the contemporary group is what matters. Using a basketball game as an analogy, just because a team scores 80 points doesn’t mean they always win. The formula for winning isn’t just about how many points your team can score, its much more complicated than that. At this point, the deciding factor is how many points the opposing team scored. Contemporary groups work the same way, by answering how a given animal compares to the average of his or her group. Ratios, not the actual weights are used to calculate the EPDs. EPDs themselves are even more important than ratios.

Secondly, environment has a huge influence on a calf’s actual weight.

We know nutrition can push weaning weights up by several hundred pounds. We also know in our operation weaning weights can vary as much as 100 pounds from pasture to pasture. Then to further complicate matters, embryo transplant calves out of donor females are at the mercy of their recipient dam’s ability to raise a calf. Finding the best calves by simply using weights makes it extremely difficult to determine an animals true genetic value. Ratios show how the calf compared to the group and the environment he was raised in.

In the American Simmental Association, our average animal is well above average in almost every EPD trait. In API which is the All Purpose Index, our average animal is in the top 25% of the entire breed. Likewise in TI, which is more of a terminal index, our average animal is in the top 15% of the breed.

Lot 1 exemplifies our selection to provide a balanced genetic package that can excel in every facet of beef production. He excels in almost every trait. Top 15% calving ease, top 10% for growth, top 35% for maternal, top 15% for marbling, top 20% rea and top 15% for API and yet top 4% for TI! His individual performance backs up his epds. 78# birth weight, 116 weaning ratio, 111 yearling ratio, 126 IMF ratio, and 111 REA ratio! What you can’t see on his performance is his cow family. His young dam is on the path of her dam and her dam and the list goes on. Matter fact, Lot 1’s dam is a full sister to SFG Headstart, a former high seller a few years ago to Ruby Cattle Company in Iowa. Our Commerce daughters are impressive as 1st calf heifers. They have picture perfect udders, are very easy fleshing and look like the kind of cows we all want.

We haven’t even discussed how most everyone will pick Lot 1 out as an impressive bull to look at in the pen. M4524 has the genetic package we drive miles to find and he’s right here at Sunflower Genetics. You truly can have it all with bulls like Lot 1!

F1 Hybrids Express Maximum Heterosis

We have always felt true F1 hybrid bulls provided the most bang for your buck in terms of heterosis. Lot 2 is exactly what we strive to produce in our F1 program. We utilize our best purebred genetics to make bulls like M4233. An ET calf out of our 1206J donor. His EPDs are balanced from calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass. His sire LCDR Reserve is leaving extremely good uddered cows that have a real maternal look to them. An interesting note about M4533 is he is the #1 marbling offspring of LCDR Reserve by a wide margin. His balanced traits lead to a top 5% for API and his awesome carcass trait EPD gets him in the top 4% for TI. Lot 2 is another case of you can have it all in one package.

Docility: 1 SC: 39cm. Good bull who happens to be one of the youngest in the fall group. Interestingly, his dam is the donor dam of the 2 leadoff Angus bulls. Don’t discriminate against him because he’s younger than most of the fall bulls.

Docility: 1 SC: 39cm. Bedrock sired bull who’s easy fleshing and moderate. Somebody must be last today, but he already beat out a bunch of bulls that were born but got sorted into the steers. Just because they’re born as bulls doesn’t mean they deserve to be herd sires.

SUNFLOWER FEEDERS

The steers we’ve fed over the years have consistently performed at a high level, excelling in gain, efficiency, and carcass merit.

Because of this proven feedlot performance, we formed a separate entity to purchase calves sired by Sunflower Genetics bulls. Sunflower Feeders purchased several groups last fall that are currently on feed at Tiffany Cattle Company and will be marketed through US Premium. We plan to return feedlot and carcass data to producers to help guide future selection decisions, a win for everyone involved.

We also bid on additional groups we didn’t purchase, helping support stronger prices for producers. For calves that didn’t fit our target weights, we worked with other buyers to communicate genetics and health programs and help those calves earn premiums.

Ultimately, we want you to realize the maximum return on your genetic investment. Reach out to us with your marketing plan and let us help you take the next step.

Perfect Blend of Genetics Designed for Profit$

What a set of bulls. An impressive set of bulls that will be on everyone’s list sale day. Our goal is to provide our customers with bulls that keep calving ease in an acceptable range, add growth along with carcass merit and yet be maternal the daughters keep their herds moving in the right direction. These 5 bulls fit our plan to perfection. While there may be subtle differences, we’d love to buy calves out of all 5. Lot 40 is their dam’s natural calf. Born on a 1st calf heifer weighing only 77 pounds went on to wean off with a 109 ratio! But he kept going and attained a yearling ratio of 110. Even his scan data was good with a 108 ratio on IMF. What we love about L04 is she was flushed as a 12-month-old heifer, bred up AI with her contemporary group, weaned off a herd sire, bred back AI and has another bull calf on her for next year. Cow power! Just what every cow is expected to do. L04’s dam is now 11 years old and the dam of the next set of ET bulls. Her calves have averaged 106 at weaning and 105 at yearling.

Power Bulls backed by a time tested generator of a dam

We love older cows that have not only stood the test of time but have excelled through the years. C41 is a prime example of the production we want out of our cows. Raise value added bulls yet be maternal enough to do it for years. Now 11 years old, C41 is still raising good ones. Take a look at her daughter L04’s bulls in the previous lots. C41 has raised good ones for years including sons working for Diamond A in Illinois, Basore Cattle in Missouri, Copper Head Ranch in Oklahoma and several very astute cowboys in Kansas. Her daughters are equally impressive. Obviously, L04 the dam of Lots 40 to 44 and another daughter being the dam of Lot 4 today. These 3 bulls are sired by SFG The Preacher who was our high seller several years ago. Preacher calves are the soggiest, deepest bodied, easiest fleshing born. His daughters are making awesome cows with picture perfect udders.

Bull Development Program

Docility: 1. Twin to previous lot. Read the previous footnote. Buy them both and keep them together as most of the time they’re not far apart. Several times they’ve come through the chute back to back.

In celebration of our 30th annual production sale, we wanted to do something special. After considerable thought and debate, a decision was made to offer our picks of the spring 2024 heifers. Last spring we selected 4 heifers that had the makings of being the future of Sunflower Genetics. They were flushed as 12-month-old heifers and we have an exciting set of ET calves all sired by our new herd sire, GW High Ground. They were then flushed a couple more times with some embryos going in last fall or frozen to be used this spring. The decision to sell them was not taken lightly as we’ve rarely ever sold our top end heifers.

We believe more marbling is better, but you need to have somewhere to put it and her 14.5” ribeye is what we mean. Her EPDs are the envy of many. Top calving ease, top 2% birth weight, good growth, good maternal, top 10% for Stay, top 10% Marbling & top 20% for REA. Those tabulations end with top 3% for API and top 10% for TI. But the number we get mesmerized by is her IMF score. 6.31 for a 128 ratio on IMF! No surprise when you research and find her dam has 6 calves that have averaged 104 at weaning, 105 as yearlings, 106 for IMF & 118 for REA. This cowboy kind of heifer will produce bulls that will be popular for every astute cattleman. M22 was flushed 3 times for a total of 24 good embryos.

This outcross heifer made the donor group because of several factors. 1st she has a different pedigree than many other females in our cow herd. 2nd her dam came to us as a former donor at Gardiner Angus where her calves had an average IMF ratio of 152! That’s in a herd that selects for extreme marbling. 3rd M25 is another well made, thick designed, correct sound female that will produce bulls that will add value to every calf. Take a look at her full brothers and think how many like them you’d like to produce. M25 was flushed 3 times for a total of 19 good embryos.

• GW High Ground was the #1 ranking bull out of a large, competitive contemporary group at both weaning and yearling, indexing 121 and 117 respectively.

• Hard to find combo of marbling and rib-eye, ranking in the top 1% and top 10% accordingly.

• Impressive width and dimensions front to rear, with chest width, true rib shape and masculinity.

• The young dam of High Ground is a cow to watch in the future. She is a prototypic GW cow. Sound, moderate, deep bodied with perfect udder shape.

• Outstanding combination of performance, genetic value, elite carcass EPDs and phenotype made High Ground the high selling pick of many at Gateway Simmental’s Lucky Cross bull sale in 2025.

Sells after the yearling heifers. Sold by the straw. Purchaser of each lot has the option to buy 10, 20 or 30 straws at the sale price.

fall Bred heifers

Back by popular demand! The bred heifer division was a hit at last years sale, so we decided to offer 11 maternal bred females. These heifers were bred as if we were to keep them in our herd. They were AI bred then exposed to a clean up bull, most were with SFG Unbound M449 who is a full sib to lot 130!

N39 somehow missed picture day. She’s a full sister to our 2025 high selling open heifer. Good EPDs all

Not sure why this CCR Bedrock heifer wasn’t pictured as she is very deserving. She weaned off with a 112 weaning ratio.

Longevity bred in as her dam was 15 years old last fall. N92’s dam has raised 14 calves that averaged 102 at weaning, 104 at yearling, 102 on IMF and 104 on REA! Cows that last longer and excel, produce more profit.

Slick haired Bonafide daughter out of a good older cow. It seems like I keep saying the same thing but N42’s dam has excelled for many years. We only keep a cow if she’s raising good ones.

Another Bonafide heifer out of a really good Blueprint cow. The dam of N43 is a prime example of an easy fleshing cow who does a good job. No surprise when you realize her dam W31 was here for a long time.

Check out the ratios on this Turning Point H008 bull out of daughter of Shadoe X068. We calved a full sister to N90 this spring. Going to be a top heifer in her group.

We purchased the Creation bull as he jumped through every hoop you ask a potential bull to go through, even feed efficiency. Just as important, N94’s dam has done the same here at Sunflower Genetics.

When I write about the heifers, I keep asking why is this heifer not in our replacements? N103’s dam is a donor for us and raised our high selling and leadoff Angus bulls last year. N103’s maternal sisters that calved this spring are incredible.
