Selling 174 Low PAP SimAngus & Angus Bulls

Improving the lives of our customers is our first and primary goal when breeding cattle. We address this goal by first focusing on our customer’s bottom line and their day to day lives. The largest expenses cattlemen incur are cow depreciation, winter feed and heifer development. We help diminish these expenses by breeding big bodied, easy fleshing cattle; and using heterosis to increase longevity, fertility and accelerate age of puberty! We also breed for traits such as calving ease, mothering ability and docility so our customers can enjoy their day to day lives without worrying about the cowherd!
Thank you for trusting our program, Jimmy & ShayLe Stewart

All bulls that fail to pass a breeding soundness exam due to infertility, feet or leg structure will be guaranteed for three years from the time of sale. The guarantee will be satisfied as a credit toward our next bull sale and not redeemable in cash. All bulls are sold as satisfactory breeders by our DVM. This guarantee does not cover any negligence, mismanagement, disease or act of God.
Example: First year 100% less salvage value, second year 67% less salvage value, and third year 33% less salvage value.
All claims against the guarantee must be examined by a Veterinarian and a detailed Vet certification must be provided by the purchaser to the seller at the time of the prognosis. We here at Big Country Genetics reserve the right to have a bull’s semen/fertility rechecked by one of our approved Veterinarians.
When ten bulls are purchased, a 10% discount will be applied. When 20 bulls are purchased, a 15% discount will be applied.
All the bulls were PAP tested at 5,700 feet of elevation by Dr. Alan Gotfredson with Flying A Animal Health out of Ten Sleep, Wyoming. The bulls averaged a PAP Score of 37.
All the bulls offered sell in their entirety with full possession and 100% of the semen rights. However, we retain the right to use bulls within our program.

Cow Energy Requirement (CER) is expressed as the difference in pounds of total digestible nutrients (TDN) required for a cow annually. A lower CER EPD indicates a genetic tendency for daughters that require less energy to support proper production, while a higher CER indicates that a bull’s daughters will have higher energy demands.
For example:
Bull A= 150 CER EPD / Bull B= -50 CER EPD
You would expect daughters from Bull B to require 200 less pounds of TDN per head per year than Bull A.
CER Breed Average: 97.1

All Purpose Index (API) is an index expressed in the dollars generated by a bull used in a system where replacement females are kept and a percentage of the calf crop is marketed terminally. This is the most well rounded way for most commercial cattlemen to utilize EPD’s without single trait selecting. If you are retaining ownership of your calves and marketing 100% of them terminally on the grid, then high Terminal Index (TI) bulls will generate you the most money.
For Example: If a bull breeds 30 cows per year for an average of 4 years, that’s 120 total cows exposed.
If Bull A is a $100 API and Bull B is a $150 API, over their lifetime, Bull B will generate $6,000 (120 cows exposed x $50 difference in API) more NET PROFIT than Bull A!

Bull Sale
There are a lot of terminal composite bulls available in today’s world, but it’s hard to find composite bulls that are bred with the maternal traits needed to be profitable. It is proven that hybrid cows breed up better, live longer and wean more than 20% more pounds per cow exposed when compared to straight bred cattle.
Our program focuses on producing low input, maternal cattle while allowing heterosis to add pounds at weaning. It is our goal to have balanced, hard working cattle that can perform within our environment without added supplementation and feed. We like moderate framed, easy fleshing females with a lot of eye appeal and balanced EPDs.

Genetics are a long term investment. Make sure you’re protected, and remember the bulls purchased today will still have ten year old daughters in your herd in 2042!

Spear W Ranch Commercial Bred Heifers
15 head of May calving bred heifers will be offered by the Spear W Ranch. These females were bred by the 2025 high selling Lot 1 bull, and by a 3/8 SimAngus $9,500 bull. These heifers were born and raised at 6,000 feet of elevation, and have been wintered on cornstalks with no supplements beyond some hay starting in March. Females will be sold in groups of five or more.

Commercial Bred Heifers
50 head of May calving, high elevation bred heifers will be offered by the Switchback Ranch. These heifers were exposed to bulls on the mountain from Mydland Angus (64%), Big Country Genetics (19%), Pine Coulee Angus (10%) and Reminisce Angus (6%). When on the mountain these females ran at elevations of from 5,000 to 9,000 feet! This offering will be a 50 head load lot with a five head sort. The winning bidder can choose to take any multiple of five up to the entire lot.

Example of yearling bulls out breeding.
If you’ve ever bought a brand-new pickup, or any new vehicle for that matter, you probably received something like a “three year/36,000-mile warranty.” Automobiles have become so expensive that a warranty and insurance are a necessity when it comes to owning vehicles in today’s world. In the same way that the importance and cost of a new vehicle has risen dramatically in the last 50 years, so has the importance and cost of quality bulls.
Unfortunately, the longevity of today's beef genetics seems to have gone the wrong direction. I have heard this complaint time and time again as bulls are seeming to fall out of programs faster than ever before. We are combating this issue by selling every Big Country Genetics bull with a 3-Year Breeding Guarantee! This is similar to a dealership selling a vehicle with a warranty, but it also allows the commercial cowman to insure himself against potential losses without having to pay extra for that peace of mind. Our three-year breeding guarantee covers foot and soundness issues as well as semen quality, and truthfully it helps us just as much as it does you!
The way we develop and feed the bulls protects both ourselves and our customers from feet and structure issues and increases the longevity of our bulls. Therefore, when problems with feet do arise, we can often link the issue to a certain dam or sire, which allows us to make the necessary cuts to ensure the issues do not reappear.
The Guarantee:
All bulls that fail to pass a breeding soundness exam due to infertility, feet or leg structure will be guaranteed for three years from the time of sale. The guarantee will be satisfied as a credit toward our next bull sale and not redeemable in cash. All bulls are sold as satisfactory breeders by a DVM. This guarantee does not cover any negligence, mismanagement, disease, or act of God.
Example: First year credit 100% of purchase value less salvage, second year 67% of purchase value less salvage, and third year 33% of purchase value less salvage.
All claims against the guarantee must be examined by a veterinarian and a detailed vet certification must be provided by the purchaser to the seller at the time of the prognosis. We here at Big Country Genetics reserve the right to have a bull’s semen/fertility rechecked by one of our approved veterinarians.

Do you want to wean the biggest calves possible, or would you rather wean more pounds per acre? In other words, more total pounds of calves weaned? It’s common knowledge that as mature cow size increases the percentage of calf weaned gets smaller. We all have that one cow that is smaller than the rest of her herd mates and her calf always makes his way on the load, every single year!
Example:
If your 3,000 acre ranch runs 100 head of 1,400-pound cows (equating to a stocking rate of 46.67 pounds per acre) and those cows wean 45% of their body weight, you would wean a total of 63,000 pounds, or 21 pounds of calf per acre.

Versus: The same 3,000 acre ranch runs 116 head of 1,200-pound cows (equating to a stocking rate of 46.4 pounds per acre), weaning 50% of their body weight, therefore weaning a total of 69,600 pounds.
More head of smaller cows weaned 23.2 pounds per acre and the same ranch was paid on an additional 6,000 pounds of calves. Other considerations in the example include the fact that lighter calves bring more per pound and bigger cows require more pounds of feed to maintain their condition in the off-season.
With smaller mature cow size comes smaller carcass weights on the steers out of those cows. Therefore, I think it is every rancher's obligation to find the “ideal/optimum” cow size for their individual environment and resources available to them. However, for most standalone cattle operations that function on grass and hay, I believe the rewards of a smaller cow outweigh the rewards of their high-performance counterparts.

1)The US cow herd at its smallest since 1961; as of January, it shrank to a historic low of just 27.9 million head.
2)Moderate-framed cows wean 45–50% of their body weight, while larger cows (1,500 pounds and up) often drop below 40%.
3)Cows with a BCS of 5 to 6 at calving rebred within 60 days at a 90% success rate, compared to just 70% for cows with a BCS of 4 or lower.
4)Smaller to mid-sized cows often remain in the herd for ten to 12 years, while their larger counterparts start breaking down — whether from joint issues or metabolic strain — around 7–9 years.
5)Hot carcass weights hit a record high in 2024, surpassing 900 pounds — a full 36 pounds above the three-year average.
6)A 1,200-pound cow in good condition (BCS 5) typically requires 24 pounds of dry matter per day — roughly 2% of her body weight. A 1,600-pound cow’s daily intake jumps to 32 pounds. Over a 120-day winter feeding season, that equals an extra 960 pounds of hay per cow.
7)Larger-framed cows have lower rebreeding success in tough environments, leading to herd pregnancy rates as much as 10% lower than their moderate-framed counterparts.
8)Heterosis boosts weaning weights by 10%, and increases cow lifetime production by 23%.
9)Sires with strong maternal traits — like stayability and moderate mature size — can extend cow longevity by one to two years compared to high-growth sires.
