Gelbvieh Balancer

A note from the consignors…
Cattle have treated us very well for quite a while, and it appears we are still sending close to the same number of heifers to town with the steers, which allows us some confidence that the good times will continue for the forseeable future, especially if the economy gets stronger and more beef is consumed.

Breeding Guarantee: All bulls have been semen tested and will be fully guaranteed to be capable of settling healthy, sound and fertile cows of breeding age. Bulls selling for $5,000 or more will carry an additional guarantee against injury effecting breeding as declared by a licensed veterinarian; and not injured due to abuse or neglect. This guarantee is for the spring breeding period. The seller will give the purchaser of the bull credit at next year’s sale for one half of the purchase price, minus the salvage value. Seller of the bull must be notified immediately if injury occurs. If any other problems occur, the terms and conditions as stated by the breeding guarantee of the AGA (in the back of this catalog), will be in effect. Any guarantee is between the individual seller and the purchaser.
Online bidding: Contact Cody Frey at (641) 344-6112 or the sale barn at (641) 782-7025. To view only, the sale can be seen on www.dvauction.com. To be able to bid, click on submit and then contact Cody Frey or the sale barn three (3) days prior to the sale.

Delivery: Any bull bringing over $5000 will be delivered free of charge up to 200 miles. Bulls sold farther than 200 miles will be delivered to a midway point between buyer and seller, as soon as it is convenient for both parties.
Semen Interest Retained: The sellers are retaining a 50% semen interest in all the bulls in the sale. The buyer is getting full possession and 50% semen interest. If we choose to collect semen we will work with the new owner and schedule the collection around his schedule. We will rarely exercise this option, but with all the new DNA technology we may want to use some of these genetics in the future.

Welcome to our 17th Annual Bull and Female Sale!
We would like to welcome everyone to the 17th Annual Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh & Balancer Bull & Female Sale and the first Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa female Sale.
This year all of the bulls were tested at the Green Springs Bull Testing Center in Nevada, Missouri. We want to thank everyone at the Werner Feed Efficiency Testing Center for working with us over the past 16 years. Werner's were a great group to work with and are going to be missed after all those years.
Also new this year the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa (GBOI) are hosting a female sale which will start immediately following our bull sale. There will be an excellent set of bulls and females offered, and with all the different breeding programs represented between the two sales, there will be several different genetic lines to consider.
We want to thank Kent Abele and his crew at Green Springs for all they have done for us to get the bulls ready. Also thanks to Cody Frey and everyone associated with Creston Livestock Auction for all they do to help us get ready for our sale. Last but not least to Jane Adolph for putting the sale catalog together and putting up with the calls asking if she can do this or that for us. See you at the sale!
Remember to please bring your catalog with you to the Sale on March 20th!

About the EPDs: The bulls in the Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh & Balancer Sale have been tested and rated on all the major tests for breeding bulls; including ultra-sound for carcass, semen tested, scrotal measured, BVD tested and the new EPDs for weights, milk, carcass, etc. The new EPDs are more accurate through genetic testing, termed “Genomic Enhancement”. This is done by picking out genetic markers in blood samples for individual EPD traits and the degree they influence each trait. In the past EPDs have been calculated from many generations of weights and growth. The addition of genomic markers for each trait, combining the past accumulated records gives us the more accurate genomic enhanced EPDs.

Remembering our Friends…
Carl Reiste passed away this past October after struggling with a long illness. Carl who owned Rafter R Gelbvieh was one of the three original members of the sale. He could tell you the life history of every cow and bull he had just by looking at their ear tag. His passion for his cattle and The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh Sale will be greatly missed.
Roy Holste after struggling with cancer for several years passed away in April shortly after our sale last spring. Roy was one of the first members to join our sale and always brought a group of bulls to put in the sale that anyone would be proud of.
Both of these men are going to be missed by their families and all of the other people involved in our sale. Carl and Roy's families are going to continue raising cattle and putting bulls in our sale each year.

TLKG MONKEY was selected to be on the expo sale as an open heifer. After the decision was made to not have the sale in 2025, I was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be able to show her off, but also excited because I had one straw left that I had been waiting to use on the perfect female (more on that in the calf footnotes). Monkey is just a touch above a moderate framed female that is probably the most well-balanced animals from my 2024 calf crop. Maybe just a touch heavy fronted, but DEEP all the way through from front to back. Big hipped and big footed, Monkey has what it takes to be a GOOD cow in anybody’s herd. Broke to lead and HOMO BLACK AND HOMO POLLED.

I was once told by a respected producer that “The older I get, the more I like to use older genetics. If you try to hit a home run all the time, sometimes you will strike out swinging too hard. I just want that base hit every single at bat.” I kept that in mind when breeding Monkey. Crossing her with SAF CONNECTION didn’t just get a base hit, this was more of a double or triple. Just at 30 days old you can already see that wedge shape clean front and square butt that everyone is looking for. This would make for a great project for an older and younger sibling as a cow/calf pair this year, and this heifer would do great rolling right back in the ring as a breeding heifer next year. She will be broke to lead the day of the sale.
