Get the Bull Right Every Time!
Welcome to our 37th Annual Production Sale! Once again it is bull sale season and thank you for looking over our catalog. One of the most important things we have learned in the seedstock business is that our customers walk in the same shoes we do. We take care of our cows so that they may take care of us. Genetics make a huge impact on how they perform on the range, in the market place and their ability to return on our labor and investment. It is our goal to provide profitable genetics that are phenotypically attractive, sound, and easy to handle in both your herd and ours. Since we started breeding Red Angus seedstock cattle in 1976, we have made it our policy to “Get the Cow Right First!” and every effort is made to ensure every female on the ranch and every bull and replacement female we sell is fertile, functional and fault-free. We rely heavily on EPDs, pedigrees, phenotypes and common sense for each mating and do not hesitate to cull animals with disposition, soundness or fertility issues. The bulls in this catalog are a result of that selection and culling program. For the herd building traits considered in the RAAA HerdBuilder economic selection index, the average bull in this catalog ranks in the top 15% of entire Red Angus breed. While satisfying to see how they “measure up” against other Red Angus herds, it is no substitute for having cows that bring home good calves every year, breed back annually, have good feet and udders, and are easy to handle. For those that feed their cattle to finish or wish to add value to their calves to earn top dollar in the market place, Schuler Red Angus genetics are proven and recognized by cattle buyers, feeders and packers. Since 1991 we have collected ultrasound data on our seedstock and actual carcass data on our fed cattle. This program includes sire-identified cattle from our commercial herd, surplus seedstock, and AI progeny from a 1,000 head test herd in Kansas. Roughly 20% of all actual carcass records submitted to the RAAA for evaluation are from Schuler Red Angus. We typically see loads grade 98% or better for Choice and Prime with a recent load of heifers fed conventionally at a commercial lot turned in a whopping 40% Prime with 92.5% premium products! The selection index GridMaster, developed by the RAAA to compare feeding and carcass traits, ranks the average Schuler Red Composite bull in this offering at the top 10% and the average Red Angus bull at the top 15% over all other yearling Red Angus bulls. Our goal is to add value to our cattle at every level. In addition to genetics and soundness, disposition is a significant part of that value. We receive numerous, unsolicited comments on how our cattle handle from bull customers, bred heifer buyers, feeders, truck drivers and packers. All the cattle on the ranch are handled respectively, utilizing low-stress or more precisely what cattle handling expert Curt Pate terms “effective stockmanship” methods, making the need for corrective handling advertised by other seedstock producers to gentle the cattle unnecessary. We guarantee the disposition of the bulls for 30 days after delivery. Thank you for considering Schuler Red Angus and if you have questions about the bulls in this catalog or our program, please do not hesitate to call or email us at info1@schulerredangus.com. About the Catalog and Performance Data...
• Red Angus and Schuler Reds share a common base and their EPDs for performance and carcass traits can be directly compared. • Breed rank percentages are printed next to each EPD so you may quickly evaluate each bull’s predicted progeny performance relative to other non-parent Red Angus. • Calving Ease Direct (CED), Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), Heifer Pregnancy Rate (HPG) and Stayability (STAY) are presented as percent probabilities. Thus, a bull with an HPG EPD of 15 would be expected to have 5% greater positive observations (Pregnant daughters bred to calve as 2-year-olds) than a bull with a HPG EPD of 10. • The Red Angus Association of America updates EPDs on a weekly basis. The EPDs in this sale catalog were generated on 2/23/2019. The most up-to-date EPDs are available on-line at https://redangus.org/data-search-tools/. • Email us at info1@schulerredangus.com to receive a sortable spreadsheet with complete performance data on each lot.
Nuts and BOLTs... The prediction accuracy of the EPDs calculated by International Genetic Solutions (IGS) for the Red Angus Association (RAAA) recently took a leap forward with the adoption of the Biometric Open Language Tools (BOLT). This new National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) software maximizes the use of information for pedigree, phenotypic and genotypic data in the world’s largest beef cattle, multibreed data-base with nearly 17 million head. One of the most significant impacts of BOLT has been the ability to calculate EPDs for Calving Ease Direct (CED), Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) and Stayability (STAY) in a true multi-breed EPD model. For STAY, BOLT represents a significant improvement in the accuracy of the STAY EPD for our Schuler Red Composites. In our 2018 catalog these traits were still being calculated on a single-breed EPD model meaning that no measure or estimate was used to account for the non-Red Angus portion of the pedigree in our Schuler Red Composites. For lack of a better term, this was nuts! For years we have marveled at the fertility and longevity of the cows in our composite herd, so it comes as no surprise to us that the Schuler Red bulls are just as elite for STAY and HerdBuilder as their Red Angus herd mates in the multi-breed model.
IMPORTANT BASE CHANGE FOR CALVING EASE DIRECT: With the change to a multi-breed EPD model, Red Angus calving ease data was combined with other breeds. Given that Red Angus has less calving difficulty than most other breeds, the breed average or “base” was shifted from a CED EPD of 6 to a CED EPD of 12. This is important when you are buying bulls for use on virgin heifers. If you were previously comfortable with a CED EPD of 9 or 10 for a calving ease bull, you will now need a CED EPD of 15 or 16 to receive the same degree of calving ease.

About the Sale... To facilitate your evaluation and selection, the bulls will be penned next to the sale facility and sold in catalog order. A video of each bull will be displayed during the sale and no bulls will be run through a sale ring.
Bull Videos: A video of each bull is available for viewing prior to the sale on our website at schulerredangus.com. The bulls are videoed a month prior to the sale in an open pen along a four-wire fence eschewing from the typical background of windbreak or hay stacks commonly used in bull videos. We also prefer not to use straw in the video pen or in the viewing pens sale day so you that you may evaluate their movement and foot structure unencumbered.
Conference call bidding:
If you are unable to attend the sale or bid over the Internet, and wish to bid on animals personally we will have a conference call “bid line during the auction. To use this service follow these three steps: 1. Call or email us prior to the sale date to get the bid line number and receive a PIN number as well as a buyer number. 2. Call the conference number sale day anytime after 1pm MST and enter the PIN number. 3. You will now be able to place bids with our representative during the auction.

Our 2019 sale presents the first crop of Top Hand sons, and he’s delivered everything we projected including big powerful tops that will hold rain water. SCHULER DISCIPLINE 8506F Domain is a new sire that we introduced after his progeny – specifically his highly fertile daughters earned him one of the highest HerdBuilder values for Red Angus. Selling as Lot 2, Schuler Discipline 8506F shares Domains best 1% HerdBuilder status but “one-ups” the old man by adding best 1% ADG and best 1% GridMaster. He presses the scales down at each phase of the beef supply chain without getting out of bounds on calving ease, mature size or feed intake.

SCHULER LOGIC F607 Keys to sustained cow/calf profitability are increased stocking rate and reduced replacement rate. Schuler Logic F607 makes a strong case for both. His daughters will be moderate, easy keeping females that will stay one body condition score ahead of the rest of the herd. Then there’s his superior 7% ranking for Stayability which means those easy-fleshing daughters are going to stay around. If you want a herd sire that is moderate, soft flanked, and has a top like a board room table, then Logic just makes sense. 7

Regardless of when you market your calf crop, Wide-Spread works to get you a bigger paycheck. Just look at his breed ranks for WW, YW, ADG and Carcass Weight. We predicted these Oracle sons were going to dominate post-weaning traits, and they haven’t disappointed us. His performance is only superseded by outstanding phenotype which will beg order buyers to get their hands in the air when his calves come in the ring.

The participants in the bidding war that made this bull’s sire, Schuler Amped D303, the highest selling Schuler Red composite may still not have forgiven each other. Time and data, however, have proven they picked the right bull to pick on – earning a 22 CED to 115 YW spread and single-digit ranks for HerdBuilder and GridMaster. Versatile F721 mirrors his sire’s spread posting an even better 18 CED to 122 YW and comes with his dad’s deep rib and heart girth.

Schuler Prime 8409F is designed to change select carcasses to choice, and choice carcasses to Prime. If bred to breed-average Red Angus cows, their progeny would be in the top 10% of the breed for Marbling in one generation! Herd progress on quality traits will come quickly with this sire while giving up none on the superior cow traits that made Defender and Endurance famous. With a best 9% CED to a top 10% ADG spread and a mind-numbing 158 IMF ratio, Prime 8409F is custom-built for ranchers who feed their own calves or earn the repeat business of those who do.

It’s not common to see calving ease bulls deliver top 1% post-weaning gain, but that is the potential performance bred into F653. And he’s an equally good choice to lower your replacement rate, allowing you to cash crop more heifers; with single digit ranks for heifer pregnancy and stayability.

This bull’s sire, Rebel, sold for $5,500 in our 2011 sale to Simpson Ranch of Whitman, NE. The calves produced from the first semen collection foretold one of the greatest female producers and spread bulls of the last decade. Let’s just say he has earned his purchase price several times over as Rebel leads Accelerated Genetic red angus semen sales with nearly all sold to commercial ranchers. F650 upholds his namesake’s legacy flawlessly as he is a big-time spread bull that checked all the boxes in terms of individual ratios: 90 BW, 110 WW, 108 YW, 111 IMF and 111 REA and mirrors his sire’s performance across the board. You’ll want to keep every daughter!

If last year your comfort level for “heifer bulls” was a CED EPD of 9 or 10 - this year that needs to be a 15 or 16 this year to be getting the same degree of calving ease.
SCHULER INTREPID-8537F
BROWN BLW INTREPID C5963

With the change to a multi-breed EPD model, Red Angus calving ease data was combined with other breeds. Not surprisingly, Red Angus was easier calving than most other breeds, so the breed average or “base” shifted from a CED EPD of 6 to a CED EPD of 12. This is especially important to remember when you are buying bulls for use on virgin heifers.

Due to his outcross genetics and superior phenotype we tried to buy Brown Intrepid when he sold in 2017 but ran second to a group that included Genex. Lots 15 & 16 both show the length of body, strong tops and deep quarters that we saw in their sire. These Intrepid sons would be unrelated to the daughters of most Schuler sires you may now have in the herd.

F605’s dam is backed by two of the greatest female producers from the Schuler program, both of which found homes at major AI studs. His dam is a daughter of the 246 HerdBuilder, Rebel. She weaned her first calf 10% heavier than her 2-yr-old classmates. Her Grandam is a 101 MPPA daughter of the ABS sire, Schuler Envy who after 12 years of genetic trend still earns a 217 HerdBuilder Index thanks in large part to the longevity and productivity of his daughters.

Three half-brothers by calving ease legend and cow herd builder, Schuler Rebel 0029X sell as lots 27-29. No surprise they average over 220 HerdBuilder due to Rebel’s well-earned reputation for fertile and functional daughters. Leading these brothers off, 8474F (Lot 27) presents exceptional pay weight and gain predictions for a calving ease bull.

Everyone has a different definition of a “sleep all night heifer bull”, but we bet F682’s 20 CED and -5 lb BW EPDs will fit for most folks but where he does break the paradigm is that his ADG, YW, CW and REA are all in the best 1/3 of the breed – proving you can have your cake and eat it too!

SCHULER AMPLIFY 6206D, the sire of Lots 42-44, was the lead-off bull in our 2017 sale - which is not to be taken likely as that sale also included two other prolific sires, Top Hand and Amped. Amplify was purchased by our good friend, Frank Wedel and together we collected him and put him into our progeny testing program. That summer, after an ample supply of semen was collected for Wedel Beef Genetics, ourselves and the progeny test, we had the misfortune of losing Amplify to a broken leg. The Amplify sire group is the largest in this sale, and their performance and type has certainly verified both Frank’s judgment in selecting him and ours for making him our lead-off bull two years ago.

We are not surprised that these Endurance daughters are showing up at the front of the herd. The 2-yr-old dam of 8404F delivered a 109 WW ratio on her first attempt. Of course she is out of a 104 MPPA daughter of Marbling legend Brown Commitment. We have gone back and used Commitment in recent years thanks to his combination of high accuracy top 1% marbling and 10% STAY.

Lots 59 & 60 would make an excellent pair of half-brothers to turn out on a set of mature cows to increase post-weaning gain and carcass value. One could expect excellent breed up on their daughters given they both flirt with top 10% heifer pregnancy rate.

Obviously cows have to be bred to fit their environment/resource base and their progeny have to produce desirable consumer beef. However, genetic antagonisms between traits and other management factors result in mismatches that occur between optimum cow fitness and optimum carcass fitness. Fortunately the knowledge base that can be used to manage some of these mismatches has grown in recent years. Given time, effort, and commitment, a rancher can develop an action plan to produce not a perfect fit, but a profitable compromise between “cow goals” and “carcass goals”. –1999, Jim Gosey, UNL Beef Cattle Specialist Emeritus

It’s hard to believe the oldest Rebel daughters turn 7 this spring; this bull’s dam is from that crop. Stayability predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters staying productive in the herd past the age of 6. Rebel’s daughters hit that milestone last year and now his STAY EPD has climbed to top 1%

This Oracle son is a 3/4 brother to the good bull that sells as Lot 83, and like him, F728 had a tremendous IMF scan and combines a sire and maternal grandsire that excel for marbling. They both predict to make significant improvement in quality grade.

This bull should be an exceptional value for a set of mature cows. He’s bested his contemporaries at pay weight, gain, and ultrasound scan and has two of the highest ranks for heifer pregnancy and stayability in the entire offering.

We are proud of the Rebel sons in this offering. We understand some customers have purposefully loaded their herds with the Rebel bloodline, but for those who haven’t...we’d put this batch of Rebels up against any we’ve ever sold! This super calving ease bull with exceptional cow herd building traits has one of the highest marbling scans in the entire sale.

If you haven’t got one of the many 200+ HerdBuilder bulls that sold in the first 100 lots don’t fret - Here’s are 10 more just on these two pages, and they include several top 1 and 2% HerdBuilders. And, if you are still needing to breed heifers, you’re in luck too. The majority of those strong HerdBuilders have calving ease direct (CED) EPDs that rank in the easiest calving 20% of the breed.

If you want replacement females that are built to last, consider F733. He was raised by one of the most experienced dams on the ranch. At 13, R197 is still competing for her grazing privileges, and besting many females young enough to be her daughter and/or granddaughter.

SCHULER RED COMPOSITES Schuler Red Composites have been bred and selected to be solid red, uniform in type and no larger in mature size than our purebred Red Angus. After more than two decades of development, our Schuler Reds have met our goals of allowing our customers to harvest heterosis and breed complements while maintaining the convenience traits of Red Angus. Schuler Red Nomenclature:
You will notice the numbers 71, 62, 53 or 44 in the name of Schuler Red Composite bulls in this catalog; these numbers specify the approximate proportion (in eights) of British vs. Continental blood. The first number represents the eights of British influence and the second number represents Continental influence.
Why crossbreed? Heterosis, or hybrid vigor obtained through
crossbreeding results in increased fertility & cow longevity. But, most importantly…improved profitability! Just three generations of straight breeding will result in an 87% loss of hybrid vigor for reproduction and production traits. Economically relevant traits of conception, survival and fitness are hit the hardest because they are lowly heritable and respond slowly to selection pressure. The US Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) reports an increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed of 8.5% by simply raising crossbred calves from straight bred cows over purebred commercial calves. Maternal heterosis is the additional gain expected by comparing crossbred cows to straight bred cows raising crossbred calves. USMARC reports maternal heterosis will gain another 14.8% in cow efficiency, totaling the effects of individual and maternal heterosis at a 23.3% increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. While some of that gain can be attributed to higher milk production, it is largely the result of cow longevity and vigor.
Schuler Red Composite Herd at Horsecamp
Why use composite bulls?
“User Friendly” - Composites like Schuler Reds are the simplest way to obtain the beneficial heterosis and breed complements available through crossbreeding. Schuler Reds eliminate the need to maintain multiple breeds of bulls and numerous breeding pastures for rotational mating systems. Uniform Calf Crops - Use of Schuler Reds will result in less biological variation across the resultant calf crop than rotational systems utilizing two or more parent breeds. Target calf value - Straight Angus cow herds can easily identify Schuler Red bulls that will result in 1/4, or 1/8th continental influence to benefit postweaning gain and yield grade while maintaining “Angus” marbling. Depending on their target market, Hybrid Baldy or SimAngus/Balancer herds can select Schuler Red bulls that will maintain 50:50 British:Continental influence or select Schuler Red 71’s to raise the percentage of Angus.
“Given the powerful sire selection tools found in National Sire Evaluation programs there are certainly individual purebred commercial programs that are as productive as crossbred commercial programs because in low stress environments the advantages of hybrid vigor in that circumstance are small enough that purebreds can successfully compete. Thus, it would only take one drought year to blow the purebred commercial approach out of the water should it be used on an industry-wide basis.” - Jim Gosey, UNL Beef Cattle Specialist Emeritus Schuler Reds - While our Schuler Red cattle were developed as a maternal composite to capture heterosis and breed complements, they will improve muscling and yield grade quickly as the average Rib Eye Area EPD of this offering ranks in the top 1% compared to the entire Red Angus breed. 35
SCHULER RED COMPOSITES Lot 126
SCHULER RED 62 BOUNTY-F156 If you desire to improve yield grade and REA while adding heterosis to your cow herd, AND don’t want to lose elite Red Angus marbling - study these half-brothers by 18 Karat that sell as Lots 126 & 127. NOTE: While the Schuler Red EPDs are directly comparable to our Red Angus bulls’, the percentile ranks printed are compared to other composite cattle. Bounty’s REA EPD would be well above the top 1% for Red Angus while his .61 Marbling would still compare with the top Marbling Red Angus bulls in this sale. Bet his progeny would be pretty fun to feed.

SCHULER RED 62 BOUNTY HUNTER-F157 In addition to improving REA and Yield Grade, Bounty Hunter should be an excellent cow herd builder. Not only does he have top 17% or better ranks for heifer pregnancy rate, maternal calving ease and stayability, he also has the power of heterosis on his side to increase lifetime productivity of the cowherd. In addition, F157’s moderate frame suggests you can get all of the above without increasing mature cow size. And then there’s his highly producctive dam, a 9-yr-old 42S daughter that is a veteran of the composite herd and has earned a 107 MPPA. 36

The Yukon cattle have made some of our best composites due to Yukon’s unique combination of muscle, lean-yield and cow herd traits. Look at the balanced tabulation these half-brothers have for heifer pregnancy rate, maternal calving ease, stayability, yield grade and carcass weight. Never mind the heterosis bonus you’ll receive if used on purebred Red Angus cows.

The sire of Lot 140 is a candidate for the best Yukon son we’ve produced, selling to Aaron Rasmussen of Hay Springs, NE in our 2017 sale. This Yukon grandson comes with an exceptional carcass evaluation - 11% or better for carcass weight, yield grade, marbling and rib eye area. Like the Yukon brothers before him he predicts to improve heifer breedup and lengthen the cowherd’s productive lifespan.

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth. Research Confirmation Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.
Rancher Trusted While market research validates the price advantage of Red Angus heifers, ranchers have tested and trusted her worth on the range for years. Red Angus females are desirable as replacement heifers because they mature into productive mother cows that reward producers with extra dollars in their pockets on sale day.
The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.
Red Angus cows have gained ranchers’ trust as a complete package through fertility, eshing ability, good disposition, longevity and excellent overall production. They produce feeder calves that earn premiums in the yard and on the rail through docility, feed efciency, conversion and carcass merit.
They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.
Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring protability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. ■
Independent research studying five years of Superior Livestock Auction data confirms the value of Red Angus replacement females. Red Angus Stockyard List or locate quality Red Angus replacement females at stockyard.redangus.org. Over 20,000 head of cattle are sold each year through the Red Angus Stockyard. FeMail An electronic tool to help locate or market ranchtested replacements. Market your open heifers, bred heifers or cows, or cow-calf pairs. FeMails are designed for offerings of 25 head of more to complement listings on the Red Angus Stockyard.

Schuler R&D leads to Prime results.
Congratulations to CJ Blew and family on a great year of high AI Schuler genetics run deep in these heifers produced by Blew Partnerconception rates and outstanding harvest data results contributing to ship, in Pretty Prairie, KS. Their aggressive use of AI, disciplined use of the product trait accuracies of our herd sires. The 2016 harvest data EPDs and evaluation of data collected from large commercial contemon Blew’s commercial progeny sired by Rebel and one load graded an porary groups has resulted in some of the most genetically advanced amazing 44.4% PRIME and 100% Choice+! commercial replacements available. Blew’s offer top quality replacement heifers for purchase every year.
Schuler Red Angus has been collecting carcass data since 1991, but in recent years we’ve forged relationships to gain accuracy faster on the young sires we put back into our program. For the past three breeding seasons we’ve participated in a structured progeny test program where the young sires we sample, and that will ultimately produce bulls for our customers, are tested against high accuracy reference sires. Last spring over 800 cows were inseminated and calving ease, weight gain, reproductive and carcass data will be collected in large contemporary groups and used in the International Genetic Solutions national cattle evaluation.
We invite our customers to brand our sale barn on the day of the sale. Come enjoy the sale day, and leave your mark! Guarantee:
All the bulls in this sale have been semen tested and evaluated for soundness. They are guaranteed to be breeders for the first season, but we do not insure them against death or injury If your bull unfortunately gets injured, please call us and we will try to find a suitable replacement as quickly as possible. Insurance will be available sale day if you desire further risk protection.
Genetic Defects:
No cattle in this sale are known carriers for any lethal genetic defects and any animals containing a known lethal genetic defect carrier in their two-generation pedigree (without an intervening tested free animal) have been tested free by a Red Angus Association approved laboratory for said genetic defect and have met the Red Angus Association’s requirements for registration. Refund of the animal’s purchase price or replacement with an animal of equivalent value within one year of the sale date will be considered satisfactory settlement in the case of incorrect genetic defect information provided at the time of the sale.
Health:
The cattle were vaccinated with Alpha CD at birth and Alpha-7/MB-1 and InForce 3 were administered at branding. At weaning they received Bovi-Shield Gold 5 One-Shot and an ivermectrin. After weaning, they received an ivermectrin and vaccinated with Bovi-Shield Gold 5 and Ultrabac 7. At yearling, the bulls were vaccinated with Bovi-Shield Gold 5 and poured with an ivermectrin. Every bull in the sale has passed a complete breeding soundness evaluation by Trail Animal Clinic.
