Axtell Cattle Company - 2019 Sale Catalog by LivestockDirect

Annual Production Sale Monday, March 25, 2019 1:00 p.m. (MST) Sterling Livestock Commission Sterling, Colorado

Offering 71 Yearling Registered Red Angus Bulls 19 Registered Red Angus Heifers 50 Commercial Red Angus Heifers

www.axtellcattlecompany.com

WELCOME! We would like to welcome you to the annual Axtell Cattle Company bull and female sale. The bulls selling are basically the top half of our calf crop. We don’t keep them all and we seem to cut deeper every year. Please note that we will have an EPD update, as it takes nine days for the EPDS to change after data is received by Red Angus. I expect major upward changes in growth and carcass on a good portion of the bulls. This group of bulls is the best performing and looking set that we’ve ever offered. They went right to feed last fall, had very little sickness, and hit the ground running. We made major purchases of herd bulls two years ago so this is the first crop from those bulls and we couldn’t be more excited about them. We basically searched the continent and found three bulls that have a major impact on this sale and our program for years to come – Red SSS Knock Out 661D, ARO Endorsemen 665 and Calvo 64Z Julian 34C. We feel the quality will be much improved on the registered heifers. As a group, they are a very nice set. The commercial heifers will have two groups from long time customers and very good cattlemen. These heifers will be great assets to commercial herds in the area. As I write this, it is a cold and miserable day. We’ve had our share of cold weather in February and early March, but green grass is just around the corner. This group of calves fought drought, major hail storms, dust this winter, and now extreme cold. They are battle tested and ready to work. Be sure to check out videos of all the bulls and heifers online at DVAuction.com. Keep in mind that they will have matured another month from the date of the videos. We invite you to stop by anytime to see the bulls and heifers, our herd sires or cowherd. Just call ahead to set up a time and get directions. The sale offering will be available for viewing at the sale location on the afternoon of March 24th. We look forward to seeing you sale day, but if you are unable to attend and wish to bid just contact us, the sale representatives, or preregister on DVAuction.com or CattleUSA.com a couple days prior to the sale. You are able to bid live on DVAuction or leave proxy bids on lots you may be interested in. I have used proxy bids before and it works well – you just input a maximum bid you’d be willing to pay and the computer will bid for you up to that amount. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you in the buying process. We love to talk about cattle and would be glad to visit with you anytime. Also be sure to follow our facebook page and website for more details. Hope to see you March 25th! The Axtell Family Brian, Jamie Jo and Clay

Knock Out was purchased from the famous SSS Red Angus in Canada. We loved his depth of body, muscle and type, but what really sold us was his dam. We bred him to every type of cow we had just to see where he clicked. He seems to click on all cows. Short cows, you get smaller frame with tons of muscle and depth, big cows, we got all kinds of length and growth. He is very easy going and we feel his calves have taken us farther, more quickly than any sire we’ve used.

This is the last natural calf crop for Red Knight as he was lost to injury. He probably packed as much weight and muscle on a small frame as any bull we’ve ever used. He makes them dark red, always adds natural thickness and depth of body and is out of a top cow.

This is the last calf crop from a legend in our herd. “George” was an easy going bull that left his mark here. He left a bunch of daughters that will carry on his legacy. He was good calving ease, could compete with any of our bulls for growth and threw long bodied calves. He ranks in the top 5% of the Breed for HB.

665 was purchased from Arrowsmith Red Angus in Nebraska. He is long bodied, great footed and has added performance. We love the length of spine on his calves and the added performance. His bull calves averaged a 104.5 ratio for yearling weight. I expect his performance numbers to increase.

This is the first calf crop from 34C. He was our pick of the bulls at the 2017 Calvo Sale. He is very closely related to Julian 56A but with a little more growth. He showed good calving ease and muscle with his first calf crop. We have high hopes for this bull.

6249 is the replacement to his sire, Red Knight 86A. He is very similar to his sire, with possibly a touch more length of body. There are only two sons in the sale, but both are stout bulls. He will be used more heavily in the future.

511 has been one of our heifer bulls. He’s very clean made and should make outstanding daughters. His dam was a feminine cow with a perfect udder. We kept him to carry on his dams genetics.

Check out our online catalog, lot videos and sale broadcast at DVAuction.com

Commercial heifers This year we are offering groups of commercial replacement heifers for our customers out of our genetics. These heifers are owned and raised by the two consignors and have been bangs vaccinated and are ready to breed. These heifers come from some of the top commercial herds in Northeast Colorado. Each group of heifers will come into the ring and the buyer has the option of taking 5 head up to the whole lot. We believe this is a solid group of red females that will make their new owners proud. The commercial heifers will START the sale at 1:00 P.M. so be ready for these outstanding females

Lot A: Steve and Matt Kalous – Brush, CO (970) 768-2451 Steve and Matt are offering 20 head of replacement heifers. These heifers are born in January and February and are out of a high performance cattle herd. They will have extra size and weight and will make top cows. They are sired by Axtell Nebula 9704 #1294157, our top selling bull in 2010, who is still going strong, Axtell Emperor 4229 #1703367 our second high selling bull of all time and Axtell Dominator 5830 #3478145 the third high selling bull in 2016. They buy the good ones and it is evident in the quality of their cattle. If you want to tie into top genetics, look at these girls. I would call this group one of the best sets of cattle to sell in the state this spring.

Lot B: Travis Vallin – Watkins, CO (303) 877-1211 Travis is offering 30 head of replacement heifers. These are the replacements that he had picked for his fine herd. These are straight Red Angus heifers and are out of Axtell and Arrowsmith Bulls – Registration #’s 1398108, 1517361, 1703367, 3478145. These cattle will be in the right condition to breed and are backed by an outstanding cow herd. They are mostly March born heifers and are out of an impressive cow herd with a combination of performance and maternal genetics. Please note that NO DELIVERY will be available on commercial heifers.

Pictured are last year’s consignment by Steve and Matt Kalous. For this year’s consignments, check out videos on DVAuction.com

We lead off the sale with a great herd bull prospect. He is very long, deep and wide. A very powerful bull that blends performance with a very moderate birthweight. His dam is a proven producer that has excellent mothering traits. This bull is rare in that he’s in the top of the breed for Milk and Stayability. Two traits that don’t typically go together.

A real powerhouse. Extremely long bodied, wide and correct. He’s a bull out of one of our best young cows that was a top performer at weaning and has done even better since, ranking #1 for YW. If you are breeding for performance, there may not be a better bull than this one, but you will still get a bull that has top cows all through the pedigree. A top all around bull!

This was my favorite calf all summer, we’ve not had a calf exhibit as much muscle as this one at an early age. It’s very unusual to get this much pure beef in a 71 lb. birthweight, but here he is. If you want to moderate frame and add serious thickness, here’s your bull.

I think this bull does a lot right and his dam is a maternal sister to our Axtell Dominator 1925 bull that we used for many years. Here is a bull that started small, grew well to weaning and is backed by a great cow family. If you are wanting cows that are moderate framed tanks and have the “OCC Look”, this is the bull. I think his calves will stay fat in poor conditions and they have the capacity and thickness to do well in any environment.

The numbers say this bull covers all the bases extremely well. My eye tells me the same thing, but they also tell me that this bull will moderate frame while increasing depth of body, muscle, calving ease and eye appeal. Both his dam and grand dam are outstanding cows. He is definitely a prospect for any registered herd looking for a moderate heifer bull with true thickness.

A dark red, long bodied bull with good depth of body and backed by a top maternal cow family. He will add pay weight and make excellent daughters as well. We are very pleased with the Endorsemen 665 calves, they definitely add length, growth and scrotal. The genomic data on his calves all increased on Stayability as well. This is Clay’s bull and he should be proud! This bull gets better every day, as do all of the Knock Out sons. He is a calving ease bull, but so much more. He is extremely clean made, very long bodied and has a lot of meat in him. His dam has arguably the best udder in the herd and that says something as we put a tremendous amount of pressure on udder quality. I would not be a bit surprised if this turns out to be the best bull in the sale.

Lot 26, another top bull that could just as easily led off the sale as being Lot 26. He is long as are all 665 sons. He has good depth of rib and packs on the pounds. His dam is very easy fleshing and has a typical, perfect udder of our Syringa cow family. He could possibly be used on heifers, but I would personally wait a year and see how he does on the cows. He had a 107 IMF & 107 REA Ratio. Basically every measureable trait was well above average on this bull.

This bull may be the easiest calving in the sale, ranking in the top 1% of the breed for both BW and CED. His dam always calves right at the start of calving, usually 10 days early. He will be a short gestation, sleep all night calving ease bull, but he also has something to him. She produced our $8,500 co-high selling bull in 2017 to Three Bridges Land & Cattle and has more top bulls than I can count. A small headed heifer bull that is built for calving ease. He is long and smooth and had a 40.5 SC, pretty unusual to get that kind of scrotal on a heifer bull. Genomic data increased this bull to the top 1% for HB and STAY. It makes sense, with all the good cows in his pedigree.

Here is another bull deriving from OCC Genetics on the cow side. He will only be a year old by sale day, but has a moderate frame and excellent depth of rib and is a stout heifer bull. Picture below

Lot 67 is a thick made bull with a lot of depth. He is one to keep daughters out of. His dam is a top cow in type, structure and udder quality. She produced a previous high seller to Shuman Red Angus in Oregon.

This bull is a long bodied bull that should work on heifers. He has grown out very well and will have a little more growth than many heifer bulls. He will be the last Emperor bull to ever sell. He was a bull that did a lot of things very well and really had no drawbacks. They have been very popular sire groups over the years.

We close out the bulls with a 57 lbs. BW extreme heifer bull. He’s in the top 1% for CED and BW and is built that way as well. His dam and grand dam are extreme low BW cows and are both very short gestation, typically calving a week prior to our expected calving date. Use for calving ease and fertility!

Red Angus Heifers We will be bringing the heifers into the ring in groups of two. You will have the option of purchasing one heifer or both, your choice. The heifers in the offering are right out of the replacement pen including a few from the very top. They are not big, fat heifers. They are raised right along with our other heifers and should mature into 1,000 lb. bred heifers. They will grow well once they hit green grass. We feel that over feeding young heifers is detrimental to their potential milking ability and structure. We’ve included some of our top growth heifers and some of the more moderate heifers in an attempt to have something for different tastes in cattle.

Lot 85 is a long bodied heifer with good growth and a top cow behind her. She produced a good herd bull to long-time customer Pete Pyatt in last year’s sale. This heifer is in the top of the breed for HerdBuilder, HPG and STAY. She will be a good addition to a herd.

This heifer is similar to Lot 85 in pedigree, type and dam. They would be a good pair. The Emperor x Cody combination has worked for years for us. She will make a nice cow.

This low BW heifer had above average performance as well and is the last Emperor calf to ever sell. An Emperor heifer backed up by Forster Gold and Glacier Logan should make a good cow.

Scamp’s make good cows. This heifer should as well. She has good depth of body as does her dam. Her numbers are very balanced across the board.

This moderate framed heifer will be very low maintenance and her dam is a very good overall cow. The great grand dam, 503 is one of the better Red Angus cows I’ve ever seen. This girl should make a nice, smaller cow.

Lot 90 is out of a beautiful cow, she is very deep bodied, easy fleshing and just a really nice cow. This heifer will be a smaller framed heifer and if she ends up like her mother, she will be a good one.

Axtell Blockanna 845-149 Dam of Lot 90

Our Program We purchased our first Registered Red Angus cow in 1993 and started in the Red Angus business in 1997. We started small with purchases from well known herds and over the years we’ve been able to increase our herd through additional purchases at Boot Jack, Milk Creek Reds, Beckton and others. All of the cattle we have bought in the last five years have went back to a base of Boot Jack, Beckton, Buffalo Creek and Beeby genetics. We have used A.I.; however, our bread and butter has been buying the best bulls we can find and using them in natural service. We are also using more home raised sires in our program. We feel that our herd bulls are as good or better than most A.I. bulls in the industry. Using our home raised bulls is something that has really helped us improve our cow herd. We take a lot of pride in udder quality and mothering ability and knowing the dam of our herd sire is important to us so that we don’t bring in any unwanted traits through the cow side. Our program is focused on convenience traits. We strive for a cow herd that has sound feet, excellent udders and good fleshing ability. We live in short grass country where large pampered cattle will not work. We have found that moderate framed, easy doing cattle are the way to go here. Excessive growth EPD cattle are typically gone very quickly due to our limited feed resources. We breed for the middle and feel that if our EPD’s indicate that we are near the breed average in most traits, then we are doing something right. You will not see many sires used here that are trait leaders at any one trait, yet they will be very competitive at most traits. You will notice a strong Boot Jack influence in our herd. We really like the maternal side of the Boot Jack cattle and feel that the infusion of Beckton genetics have complimented them well. The dam’s and most of the sires of these bulls are available to be seen at any time. Calving ease is also a focus of our program. We have had very few calving problems in our herd. For more information on our program, please don’t hesitate to contact us or check out our website at

SPECIAL THANKS to the crew at Sterling Livestock Commission. It is a pleasure working with you!

A huge THANK YOU to Brian’s parents, Vaughn and Joyce Axtell for everything you do for Axtell Cattle Company! Our thoughts go out to all of our fellow cattlemen who are braving tough weather conditions this winter. We are hopeful for spring!
