SHENA N D OAH ’S Shining starS Spring Production Sale
WELCOME FELLOW CATTLEMEN AND CATTLEWOMEN
Hello Everyone! It’s sale time!
Please join us Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 1:00 pm for our Spring production sale at the farm in Quicksburg, VA. The sale consists of stout, long yearling and yearling bulls, young cow-calf pairs, spring bred heifers and ready-to-breed heifers.
It’s a tremendous set of genetics that we’re proud to offer our valued customers and friends. These unique outcross genetics will not disappoint. The proof is in the pudding!
The females are high maternal, performance ladies, bred with purpose, bred with a vision. They’re the most correct, easy-keeping, good-natured, functional, trouble-free mamas that I know how to breed. They are bred for real cattlemen and cattlewomen…and they flat out get the job done! The females in this offering are from the heart of the herd. They’re our best.
And great females make great bulls! These bulls are athletes developed in Virginia range conditions. All passed a complete breeding soundness examination. They’re designed to efficiently convert grass to meat, thrive on fescue, travel rough country, and withstand the wide weather extremes of these mountains.
Many fads have come and gone, but we continue to breed profitable, proven, practical cattle that thrive in many environments.
We maintain original cow family genetics that got us where we are today. We don’t just focus on numbers. Cattle pay our bills. These are one-of-a-kind, outcross genetics you won’t find anywhere else. Our motto is “Home of the Keepin’ Kind” and the cattle in this offering are definitely keepers! We’re committed to sharing our top genetics. Buy with confidence.
Please visit our new website for the on-line catalog and videos and contact me with questions. We appreciate our customers who believe in our cattle and the program behind them.
A sincere thanks to those good-hearted, dedicated friends who help make this sale possible, with special thanks to Barry Armstrong for his help year-round.
Cattle will be available for viewing after 2:00 pm Friday, April 24th.
Stay safe and healthy friends!
Hope to see you soon! - Lisa

Celebrating 250 years of America AND 50 YEARS
OF
RAISING SIMMENTALS
This year, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of this great country in 1776!!!
And it’s amazing, that a crude cabin was built on this farm around 1735 and a log house in 1750, prior to the Revolutionary War and the founding of America!!!
Often I think of the settlers who cleared this land, for then it was called “The Forest”. I wonder how they survived? I wonder how the news spread of the start of the war? I wonder if they celebrated at the war’s end and how long it took to get the news? So many questions, and few answers.
Freedom has never been free. Someone, somewhere sacrificed tremendously so we can prosper today.
And, it’s hard to believe that in 1976, 50 years ago, this herd began. This is Shenandoah Valley Simmentals’ 50th anniversary and our 27th cattle auction!
In 50 years, not only have the cattle changed, but the world we live in too.
During the 1976 Bicentennial I was a teenager. The Bicentennial covered wagon train camped near our house in town. My parents met an older couple on the journey. They welcomed me to ride with them several days and nights. It was an experience of a lifetime! I remember well the slow pace and squeaking of the wagons, the smell of horse sweat, and the laughter and cheering of folks as we passed by; and at night…the camp fires, stories and beautiful starry skies. Everything was perfect, with kind, total strangers. Think how the world has changed.
Losing my mother and aunt recently changed my life dramatically too. There’s a big void…no more phone calls, no more late night emergency room visits, no more laughter or scolding when I didn’t do something exactly as they thought I should. Yes, they’re gone in body, but just like my father, uncle, and my ancestors, their spirits are here, guiding me every single day. Realizing what a treasure this farm is, I strive daily to make them proud, to be a good steward of the land and livestock, and to share its rich history with others.
I’m proud to be an American, a Virginian, and a farmer, and I’m proud of how I was raised. As a little girl, I dreamed. I dreamed big, worked hard, and chased my American dream. And, by the grace of God, I’m living that dream today.
To celebrate 50 years of raising Simmentals, we’re doing something special at our November 2026 sale. Check our new website for details prior to the Fall sale.
And, while you’re in the area, please visit our little country store, Forestville General Store, just around the corner, North on Senedo Rd., (Rt. 42 N).
My great grandfather and grandfather were store keepers. The family tradition continues. We’re open 6 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday and serve daily lunch specials. It’s the hub of this little community where friends share news, have fellowship, tell a few lies, grab a bite to eat, and pick up basic necessities. Mom and Pop stores used to dot this countryside. Now, they’re nearly extinct. Stop by. Buy local!

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units).
Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
UsingAPIandTI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit simmental.org.
