The new schedule is: 1.Winter- December/January—(starting December 2013) advertising deadline November 10, 2013. 2. February 3. Spring- March/April 4.Summer- May/June/July 5.August/September 6.October/November. The advertising deadline will remain the 10th of the month prior to publication, example deadline for February issue is January 10, for the Spring– March/April issue deadline is February 10.

By Larry Corah, Vice President, Certified Angus Beef LLC Health has always been of critical importance in the cattle business, but the cost of poor health has been accentuated as prices have moved up. Even though more dollars are at risk, health is by no means improving, as noted in a recent issue of the Professional Cattle Consultant (PCC) newsletter: Feedlot death loss was higher the first four months of 2013 than 2012, and well above the average rate of 1.6% as reported in USDA’s recent NAHMS survey. With increased death loss comes the residual cost of more treatments and reduced performance (feedlot and carcass) for the surviving cattle. Starting in 1999, Certified Angus Beef LLC began studying the impact of cattle health on beef quality grade and the resulting dining experience. Working with researchers and information from the Iowa Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF), data analysis on nearly 7,000 cattle fed in 2002-2003 showed $170/head in lost revenue

KS Junior Angus Association Dear KJAA Members,

I hope you all have been enjoying summer and everything that goes with itvacations, lake trips and of course cattle shows. It is crazy to think that this letter will officially wrap up my junior Angus career. As I reflect on the activities in my life that have made me into the person I am today, undoubtedly the Angus association, both state and national, easily come to the top of the list. From learning speaking skills, teamwork and gaining initiative, the Angus program has prepared me to successfully move on to the next chapter in life. Most importantly though it has given me life long friends and contacts all over this country that I have already started utilizing. My advice to you as juniors is to take advantage of every single opportunity that you can. Sign up for the LEAD trips and step outside of your comfort zone. Don't forget to say 'thank you' to those people who help you along the way. I would like to first of all thank Anne for always being such a fabulous advisor. As long as I remember she has been an instrumental key to the Kansas Junior Angus Association and we would not be who we are today without her! The juniors also have a great support system from the adult association and our Regional Manager Matt Caldwell. The Auxiliary is also always ensuring that various opportunities are made available to the juniors through scholarships and programs. But mostly I want to thank my family for starting this lifestyle so many years ago. Flinton likes to remind me that we have him to thank for choosing showing over other things. So Flinton- kudos to you for that. Thank you to the juniors and the junior advisors for allowing me to serve the association that has given me so much. It has been a great year and I can't wait to see where the next generation of juniors take it! Hannah McCabe, KJAA President 2012-13

Kansas Angus Auxiliary The Auxiliary held its annual summer meeting on May 31st during the Kansas Preview. It is always good to catch up on the news about each others farm, ranch and family happenings. During the junior’s picnic and awards program, the Auxiliary presented the annual Kansas Angus Auxiliary Scholarship to Jackson Wingert. Good luck Jackson as your scholarship is being reviewed by the National Angus Auxiliary Scholarship Committee for consideration. The Auxiliary also presented awards to the junior members for their hard work this past year. This year’s Challenge Award was presented to Chelsea Figge and the Premier Exhibitor Award was presented to Luke Sankey. The Auxiliary supported the Kansas cook off teams at NJAS in Kansas by giving each team $50 to assist with expenses. Great job ! at NJAS! Have a great rest of the summer. Karen Santee, President

Meet Miss Kansas Angus

Johanna Lundgren is serving as the 2013 Miss Kansas Angus (MKA) . Johanna is the 17 year old daughter of David and Sandy Lundgren. Ottawa. The Lundgren family own and operate Eagles Wings Cattle Company. Since being crowned Miss Kansas Angus in January during the Kansas Angus Association Annual Banquet , Johanna has attended the Futurity Junior Show, the Preview Show, the District 1 and 2 meeting and the National Junior Angus Show in her role of MKA. When asked why she chose to participate in the MKA program, Johanna shared, “I have wanted to be Miss Kansas Angus since I was a little girl, so this is a dream come true for me. I wanted to become more involved in the Angus breed, and also be a mentor and role model to younger girls.” She added, “ I encourage juniors to take full advantage of all the opportunities that the KJAA, the NJAA, and other Angus organizations offer. Actually, pursue whatever opportunities are before you. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your name is—go after your dreams!” Johanna has been a member of the KJAA for eight years, during her membership she has severed as a district director and participated in state shows and educational contests. On the national level she has participated in the NJAA mentoring program, the Certified Angus Beef ® Cook-Off, teams sales, quiz bowl as well as public speaking, graphic design, photography, writing and poster contests.

Johanna states, “ I would encourage others to participate in the Miss Kansas Angus Program , because it is a different way to get involved and to promote Angus. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and something that I will always treasure. The Auxiliary has really made this a first class program, and the various sponsors have done a spectacular job with the awards. Many people have gone out of their way to make this a wonderful experience for me. For more information on the MKA program contact program chairman Anne Lampe, kansasangus@wbsnet.org.
