KAA District 3 to host Program in Chanute
District 3 director Matt Perrier will host a meeting and program for KAA members, guests and anyone interested on April 16, 2013 in Chanute, Kan. The Dutch treat meal will begin at 5:30 pm at the Ambassador Steakhouse located in the historic Tioga Hotel, 12 E Main Street . The Kansas Angus Association is proud to sponsor 3 Commercial Angus Female Sales this spring in Ft. Scott on March 30, Junction City on March 3 and Holton on April 5. We are in search of high quality, young age pairs, fall bred cows, bred heifers and open heifers to offer at this sale. If you are interested in consigning cattle to this sale, please complete the attached entry form and mail to the address shown at the bottom of the form. Using this form, an information handout will be compiled on all consignments which will be available to buyers on sale day and will be mailed on request. We will also be advertising the sale consignments in farm publications throughout the sale area on Angus internet emails. In order to advertise your consignments and compile and sale list handout and mailer, we ask that you return the to the designated sale chairman by the date specified for each sale. Consignments will be taken up to the day before each sale
however the earlier we receive your entry form, the better we can generate interest in your cattle. Consign by: Ft Scott, Thursday March 21. Junction City, Thursday March 21 Holton, Wednesday, March 27. Please note specific rules as indicated for each sale. Consigners do not have to be KAA members and out-of sate cattle welcome. Consignment Criteria The sales welcomes spring pairs, bred cows and heifers to calve in late spring of 2013; bred cows and heifers to calve in the fall of 2013; and open heifers. To insure the quality of this special sale, we have made the following guidelines. Females must meet Certified Angus Beef ®live specifications: be predominately black hided (black white faces and/or “baldies” are accepted). Females must have typical beef-type conformation (no visible dairy influence); and be without long floppy ear and hump (no visible Brahman influence). Maximum age—No older than 8 years-old. Minimum consignment of five head. Cattle may be mouthed. Cattle will be sorted by sale committee for sale order. Ft. Scott and Holton: All females must be pregnancy checked (except open heifers) within 30 days of the sale. Pregnancy checking will be the responsibility of the consignor. An official health paper from the veterinarian must accompany cattle, complete with pregnancy check results within 30 days of the sale. Cattle may be pregnancy checked at the Ft Scott or Holton by request only, an must be indicated on registration form; regular sale barn fee will be charged for PT. Open females will sell guaranteed by the seller to be open. Junction City: All females will be preg checked and bled by JC Livestock veterinarian. Calving dates provided are guaranteed by seller, open heifers are guaranteed by seller and will be preg checked if there are concerns. ( applies to all 3 sales) Cattle should be at the sale facility by 1 pm the day prior to sale; if cattle are being preg checked by sale barn you should arrive by noon. Kansas Angus Association The President’ s Pen
I hope calving season is going well for everyone. These new calves are pretty exciting as they have been a long time coming. This calf crop will have long term affect when you consider retained heifers and sale bulls. That makes our breeding decisions very important not only for us but our neighbors and customers as well. We are very fortunate here in Kansas to have many Angus operations that are reputable and dependable sources of nationally known and trusted genetics to choose from without having to travel thousands of miles. Sale season is upon us and the mailbox has a new catalog nearly everyday. I'm sure I’m not the only one with the affliction of sale catalog addiction. On a different note we had a good annual meeting in Hutchinson with DNA info as one of the topics. I am sure this information will be very valuable to evaluate our current calf crop and help make breeding decisions in the future clearer but we are going to need to learn how to evaluate and use this new technology. Also we need to remember DNA testing is not a replacement for AHIR and carcass ultrasound evaluation but needs to be used as part of the whole process. It was great to see so many kids with good Angus cattle at the Futurity junior show, I was told the entries were up , that’s good news for our future. It seemed to me that there was a good mix of old and new exhibitors there. Congratulations to all the kids and their families for participating. Even with the late February snow, many of us are still struggling with the drought that is covering our state and much of the high plains region. Lets all please remember to pray for moisture.

It’s Here What’s here? Well in Kansas it’s bull sale season, mixed in with calving, chores that have been put aside until warmer weather and of course looking for the first signs of spring in the form of green grass. It’s the season when we all anxiously await the birth of each calf and the sale of each bull in hopes that the mating decisions, work and preparations of the previous year turn out just as we expected …..and it’s time to start all over again.

The Kansas Junior Angus Association raised $2150 in their annual semen auction thanks to the generous donors and bidders, part of the funds raised in the semen auction are earmarked for Ks State Fair junior Angus awards. Bryanna Hite, Valley Center claimed A.J. McCurry Memorial Supreme Champion Award buckle after first winning champion bred and owned heifer with HDCC Lady Y02 a January 2011 daughter of EXAR Pitt Boss 409.

Dalebanks Angus, Eureka consigned the top selling flush. The flush of Dalebanks Promptitude 9506 and the bull of the buyer’s choice sold to Tad Melton, Richmond, Va for $6000. A pregnancy of KAR Jilt of 850 of SCAR consigned by Snow Creek Angus Ranch, Valeda was the top selling pregnancy selling to Clifford Ball, Arkansas City for $2300. Barkman Angus, Hillsboro selected to top embryo consignment from Sankey’s 6N Ranch, Council Grove; four embryos from the mating of Sankey’s Gal 622 x Sankey’s Lazer 609 of 6N sold for $750 each.

Champions Selected at Kansas Angus Futurity Junior Show
Kansas junior Angus members led 106 entries at the 2013 Kansas Angus Futurity Junior Show, Jan. 27 in Hutchinson, Kan. Brian Stoller, Palisade, Neb., evaluated the 56 owned females, 30 bred-and-owned females, five bred-and-owned bulls, and 15 steers before naming champions. AVF Blackcap 9172 was named grand champion owned female after first winning junior calf champion. Kelsey Theis, Leavenworth, Kan., owns the February 2012 daughter of S A V Bismarck 5682. Craft Juanada 316-212 claimed reserve grand champion owned female honors. Cale Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan., owns the January 2012 daughter of SA V Brilliance 8077. She first won the reserve junior calf champion title. Bryanna Hite, Valley Center, Kan., led HDCC Lady Y02 to supreme champion and grand champion bred-and-owned female honors. The January 2011 daughter of EXAR Pit Boss 409 first won junior champion. AVF Sara 8961 won the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female title after being selected as senior calf champion. Taylor Goering, McPherson, Kan., owns the April 2012 son of Plainview Lutton E102. Reid Shipman, Manhattan, Kan., led Sandhill 9771 Black Knight to the reserve grand champion registered steer title. He is a January 2012 son of S A V Bismarck 9771. Justin Bartonek, Olmitz exhibited the champion commercial Angus steer and Luke Sankey, Andale was reserve. Galen & Lori Fink Named 2012 Honorary Member

Galen Fink and Lori Hagenbuch grew up on eastern Kansas farms. Through the example of their parents, they learned the importance of a strong work ethic and discipline in all aspects of life. Through their youth involvement, they understood the importance of sound decisions, business, and leadership. Each began to form these ideals similarly, but separately. The Fred and Doris Fink family was a hard-working farm family raising 2 children in rural Hiattville. A lifetime member of the American Angus Association since 1948 Fred passed his respect of the breed to his children. In his youth associations, Galen began to sharpen his focus on the Chester White hogs and black Angus Cattle his dad raised, successfully showing and judging at the county and state level. A highly active and awarded member of FFA and 4-H, Galen received high praise from his leaders for his moral character, dependability, and enthusiasm. Through these experiences, Galen began to appreciate the benefits of youth livestock activities, an appreciation that continues today. 140 miles to the North of the Fink Farm, another person was coming onto the scene, equally dedicated. Frank and June Hagenbuch had 4 children, all of whom became very involved in raising and showing the families’ Angus cattle. Family vacations began in Columbia, Missouri, at the National Junior Angus show where Lori and her sister, Lynn, showed Angus heifers. For the next 12 years, not a show was missed. Lori and her siblings began winning with their home-raised calves from genetics gathered from Fred Holder, Arlo Janssen and Faye Boller. Lori was excelling in the showring and became a distinguished 4-H'er outside the ring as well, being awarded the National Beef Project Award. Lori was a member of both the Kansas Junior Angus Association and Northeast Kansas Junior Angus Heifer club, serving as president, vice president, secretary-treasurer and reporter for both organizations. Galen and Lori's interest in the cattle industry continued separately for many years, with Galen attending North East Oklahoma A&M, participating in the livestock judging team; then to Kansas State University majoring in Animal Sciences & Industry. After graduation, Galen was hired as manager of the Beef Research Unit, then moved to manager of the Purebred Unit at K-State. It was while studying in animal sciences and industry at Kansas State University, that Lori would meet Galen, bringing two individuals of similar work ethic and drive together. Galen and Lori were married in 1975 and, after finishing her master's degree in reproductive physiology, Lori was hired by the Kansas Angus Association and continued to serve Kansas Angus breeders for 9 years as the first woman secretary field person. Through the late 70s and 80s, Galen and Lori worked hard, lived simply and saved what they could, never spending money on luxury items like soda pops and potato chips. They began with one cow in 1977, and in order to begin building from her, had to ‘think outside the box.’ Galen and Lori had no land of their own, but found a pasture to rent. From the start, every available dollar went back into the herd, even to the exclusion of buying land or equipment. Their reputation would be based on the mother cow with a strong belief that the cow herd would be the strength of their program. Their intent was to raise real beef cows with that ‘mother cow’ look and so began building their herd with this end in mind. Galen and Lori agreed that the ideal cow should be practical, functional, productive and structurally well-balanced, with the inherent and proven ability to breed, milk and produce pounds of beef.
They decided theirs would be a total artificial insemination program using only high accuracy proven sires. By the mid-80s, the Finks had grown to about 20 cows. Purchasing 30 heifers from Montana’s Hyline Angus in 1987 completed the foundation. The week they were to purchase the heifers, however, the market dipped sharply and Galen and Lori were unable to find a lender. Fellow Kansas Angus member Bill New of New Haven Angus never doubted Galen and Lori’s ability to gain from their purchase and confidently lent them the money. With this boost of support, Galen and Lori knew to become successful in unstable times, staying innovative would be key. In 1988, they were the first to implant embryos in recipient herds. The embryo work made it possible for the Finks to expand their female base without the expense of more land. In 1990, 2 major events would forever change Galen and Lori's life. In July, Megan was born. To no-ones surprise, Megan didn't slow Galen and Lori down in their involvement and activities, she just had to learn to keep up. In the fall of that same year, they held a private-treaty production sale with 25 bulls. Galen and Lori decided that if they were ever to make it on their own, this was the opportune time. They decided to leave their respective jobs and devote full time to their operation. The first female production sales in the early 90s were very good — some of the highest averaging females sales of the Angus breed at that time — and would help the Finks make it through the cattle-cycle crash of the mid1990s. Although they were both focusing full time on their own operation, they continued to devote themselves to the outside activities that encompassed their industry. Galen served as the Kansas Angus Association president in 1993 and continued to judge state and national shows. Lori worked as a representative for American Breeders Service, was elected to the Kansas State Fair Board in 1995, and began her term as the Kansas Angus auxiliary president in 1997. Always looking to diversify, they did so into a whole new arena — delivering beef directly to the customer. In 1994, their Little Apple Brewing Company restaurant opened in Manhattan, and it has been a Kansas Beef Council and Certified Angus Beef brand award-winning restaurant ever since. Making this a reality took time and patience. Deservedly in 2011, Galen and Lori, along with co-owners Russ and Kelly Loub, accepted the award for the National Foodservice Beef Backer Award, for operations that go the extra mile in menuing and marketing beef. Megan continued to keep up with her parents’ busy life, and where some kids may become disinterested, it was only natural that it would instead fuel Megan's desire to become even more involved. Galen and Lori had already been very involved in the junior activities of the Kansas Junior Angus Association (KJAA), devoting their time and talents to the Angus youth of Kansas, now their daughter was about to burst onto the scene with as much energy and excitement as her parents. A member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) since the year she was born, Megan became a very active member in NJAA and the KJAA, serving on her state's board of directors. Megan's true gift is her work with younger members; and just as her parents have always done, Megan continues to encourage young people to become involved in youth Cont’d on page 8 associations. 7 ▪ March/April 2013 ▪ Kansas Angus News
Innovation in the livestock industry would become more important as the Finks carved their niche, often stating that they would not be where they are without their customers. Whatever their customers’ strategy, the Finks would help them sell — including feeder calf sales for customers, commercial female sales, and relationships with feedlots and alliances.

Galen and Lori were successfully growing their operation and in doing so, had outgrown their home base. The rented Keats home had served its purpose well. But even with all the ingenuity of the Finks, it was The way you do business today, doesn't becoming difficult to operate. They were implanting more than 1,000 embryos and selling 600 bulls a year, necessarily make you successful all out of a 40-acre rented base. It was time to relocate and purchase a home place of their own. tomorrow. In 2006, 30 miles to the north in Randolph, they found the location. They replaced fences, cleared the overgrown cedars and made major improvements from scratch. Galen Fink The new decade came with numerous awards and recognition for their years of work; and the innovations continued with the move to the new ranch location. Fink Beef Genetics became one of the first purebred breeders to video their bulls for auction. The reduced amount of help and reduced stress on the bulls was of such benefit that many other operations have since followed suit. Being the first to provide a 3-year guarantee on their bulls was further proof that the Finks would continue to align themselves to the needs of their customers. Fink Beef Genetics includes more than 1,000 acres of pasture and grass, with 300 head of beef cows. They implant 1,000 to 1,200 embryos per year into cooperator herds, and sell over 700 bulls from one of the largest embryo transplant programs in the United States. Working side by side, Galen, Lori, and Megan have grown Fink Beef Genetics to be ranked in the top 25 largest seed stock producers by the NCBA since 2004. In this month's letter I want to focus on networking. After spending a week at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association convention, networking is something you realize is critical to being successful. While this concept may sound difficult or for 'older' people, neither of these ideas are true. No matter what age you are, people are always watching what you do. From your attitude walking out of the show ring or the way you interact with your teammates in the CookOff competition, someone is noticing. Be sure that you give them a positive impression to take away. And that is all how networking starts, simply with a positive impression. A great way to start those impressions is to participate in the educational contests at NJAS. Be sure to start working on those skits and speeches now! Also, don't forget that the deadline has changed to May 15- it will be here before you know it! My challenge to new members it to enter at least one contest at NJAS, to those that have participated before try one more contest. Most contest entry deadlines are May 15– check you NJAA “green book” or www.njaa.info for specifics. JMB Angus Donates Pick of Spring Heifers for Fundraiser Ticket sales begin this spring, winner announced at Ks State Fair A great enjoyment of working with youth and the belief in the junior Angus program has led Joel and Mary Bunker, JMB Angus, Sharon Springs to donate the pick of their spring 2013 heifer calves to the KJAA to use as a fundraiser. KJAA members will begin selling tickets for this generous opportunity in May and continue through the random drawing for one lucky ticket holder during the Kansas Sate Fair 100th Anniversary Angus Show in Hutchinson on September 14. Tickets will be available for a donation of $10 each or 6 for $50, with the entire proceeds going to the KJAA. JMB Angus is located in western Kansas near the small town of Sharon Springs. The Bunker’s purchased their first registered Angus in 1990 from the Lamb Ranch in Russell Springs. Beginning with 10 bred heifers carrying the bloodlines of TC Walkon, RR Traveler and Bando 155 their herd now consists of 150 registered Angus cows. JMB Angus joined the Kansas Angus Association and the American Angus Association in 1990 and have used the AHIR program from the start. Mary says, “We have built our cow herd by using proven AI sires and some ET. We put great emphasis on maternal quality, disposition, calving ease, growth and carcass. We try to keep all of these traits in balance.” Besides ranching, Joel is employed by Animal Health International. Mary teaches Language Arts at Sharon Springs Middle School. Heifers in the group will be sired by Sitz Top Game, Sitz Upward, SydGyn CC&7, Kesslers Frontman, Final Answer and more. The group will offer exciting maternal packages as well as some show heifer prospects. Joel says, “ The heifers will be weaned a few weeks prior to the drawing which will be the optimum time for the winner to choose their heifer.” When asked what inspired them to make this donation. Mary shared, “ We feel that the KJAA teaches young people to be responsible leaders which will ensure the future if our industry. Joel and I have benefited from the help and enthusiasm of juniors , some have helped us prepare our cattle for the Ks Angus Futurity Sale and other shows and some have purchased show heifers from us. This is a way for us to support juniors and show our appreciation.” To support this fundraiser purchase tickets from KJAA members. Our Angus Family Willard I. Ericson, 90, of Prairie Village, formerly of Marquette, passed away
February 21, 2013. He was born October 29, 1922, the son of Willie and Amy (Hopp) Ericson in Marquette, KS. He was a farmer and rancher, serving as president of the Kansas Angus Association in 1970 and named a Kansas Angus Association honorary member in 2008. He was active in the community as a school board member as well as a Community Leader in 4-H Club. As a lifelong member of Elim Lutheran Church, he served on the church board and sang in the choir. Willard was united in marriage to Marjorie Grace Ferguson on April 5, 1946, in Marquette, KS. She passed away September 15, 2009. Willard is survived by: his daughter, Jill and husband Terry Oakleaf of Leawood; son, Shannon and wife Laura Ericson of Overland Park; grandchildren, Kelly and husband Jason Hayes, Jeff Oakleaf, Kevin and wife Sarah Oakleaf, Will Ericson, Elizabeth Ericson; and great-grandchildren: Parker Oakleaf, and Harrison and Carter Hayes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, son, Tim Ericson, brother, Lloyd Ericson, and sister, LaFern Olson. Kansas Angus Auxiliary This is the time of year we all find ourselves keeping a watchful eye on our cows who are nearing calving time, doctoring the ones who need a boost, warming ears on those born in frigid temperature while tending to other small details that find their way on our “to do” lists. With every step you can count on the cattleman’s wife, daughter and mother being there to give support and encouragement to the way of life we all love. As members of the Auxiliary we all share a common bond, the love of the Angus breed and also for the futures of the Angus youth. I’d like to encourage all the young women who have grown up in the Angus breed on the ranch and/or in the Junior program, to remain active and re-kindle friendships while supporting the Angus breed and the youth . Kansas Auxiliary dues are $10,you may also chose to join the National Auxiliary for an additional $10 and can be remitted to Lori Fink, treasurer. Ladies, I invite you to grab this opportunity to pay forward the support that the Auxiliaries gave you as a Kansas Angus Junior. The rewards are endless and unforgettable. On a closing note, thank you to everyone who donated items for the Scholarship Auction and for those who raised your hand/bid in support of the Kansas Juniors. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to McKenzie Flory for being awarded the Kenneth and Lorene Moore Scholarship.

The American Angus Auxiliary and Kansas Angus Auxiliary offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Applicants must first qualify on the state level prior to entering the national competition with one male and one female applicant from each state eligible for national competition. The Kansas Angus Association is proud to sponsor 3 Commercial Angus Female Sales this spring in Ft. Scott , Holton and Junction City We are in search of high quality, young age pairs, fall bred cows , bred heifers and open heifers to offer at this sale. If you are interested in consigning cattle to this sale, please complete the attached entry form and mail to the address shown at the bottom of the form. Using this form, an information handout will be compiled on all consignments which will be available to buyers on sale day and will be mailed on request. We will also be advertising the sale consignments in farm publications throughout the sale area on Angus internet emails. In order to advertise your consignments and compile and sale list handout and mailer, we ask that you return the to the designated sale chairman bu the date specified for each sale. Consignments will be taken up to the day before each sale however the earlier we receive your entry form, the better we can generate interest in your cattle. Consign by: Ft Scott , Thursday March 21. Junction City, Thursday March 21 Holton, Wednesday, March 27. PLEASE note specific rules as indicated for each sale. Consigners do not have to be KAA members and out-of sate cattle welcome. Consignment Criteria The sale welcomes spring pairs ,bred cows and heifers to calve in late spring of 2013; bred cows and heifers to calve in the fall of 2013; and open heifers. To insure the quality of this special sale, we have made the following guidelines. 1. Females must meet Certified Angus Beef ®live specifications: be predominately black hided (black white faces and/or “baldies” are accepted). 2. Females must have typical beef-type conformation (no visible dairy influence); and be without long floppy ear and hump (no visible Brahman influence). 3. Maximum age—No older than 8 years-old. Minimum consignment of five head. Cattle may be mouthed. Cattle will be sorted by sale committee for sale order. 4. Ft. Scott and Holton: All females must be pregnancy checked (except open heifers) within 30 days of the sale. Pregnancy checking will be the responsibility of the consignor. An official health paper from the veterinarian must accompany cattle, complete with pregnancy check results within 30 days of the sale. Cattle may be pregnancy checked at the Ft Scott or Holton by request only, an must be indicated on registration form; regular sale barn fee will be charged for PT. Open females will sell guaranteed by the seller to be open. Junction City: All females will be preg checked and bled by JC Livestock veterinarian. 5. Calving dates provided are guaranteed by seller, open heifers are guaranteed by seller and will be preg checked if there are concerns.( applies to all 3 sales) 6. Cattle should be at the sale facility by 1 pm the day prior to sale ;if cattle are being preg checked by sale barn you should arrive by noon. Please contact designated sale chairman or hosting sale barn for specific arrival time deadlines. Selling Fees Ft. Scott and Holton: Cost will be regular sale barn fees & expense plus a 1% commission for the Kansas Angus Association to cover special sale advertising and promotion. There will also be a per head charge for “No Sale” animals, which will include sale barn no-sale charge plus $5 to go the KAA. Junction City: Regular sale barn fees and expense plus KAA commission of $5 per head or $6 pair, to cover advertising and promotion. No sale fee is $10 per head ( $5 for JC/$5 for KAA) .Contact sale chair or barn for specific sale barn fees.
