A&B Cattle 23rd Annual BULL SALE Thursday ~ April 4, 2013 ~ 1:00 p.m. at the ranch south of Bassett, Nebr. Sale Location: Sale Facility at the ranch headquarters seven miles south of Bassett, Nebraska on U.S. Hwy. 183 Accommodations: Rodeway Inn, Ainsworth, NE 402/387-1050 Bassett Lodge, Bassett, NE 402/684-3379 Super 8 Motel, Ainsworth, NE 402/387-0700 Herd Health: The bulls have been vaccinated with Express 5 and Vision Somnus at branding, and Express 5 PHM, Vision Somnus and Vetrimec Pour-On at weaning, and have been tested and are ready for interstate shipment. Semen Evaluation: All bulls will be officially semen tested by Dr. Chris Finney of the Ainsworth Veterinary Clinic. This test includes semen analysis for vigor, concentrations, morphology and percentage lives as well as examination for physical defects such as abnormal testicles and warts. Scrotal circumferences were taken at this time. Any unsatisfactory bulls are eliminated from the sale offering. Scrotal measurements available sale day. Free Delivery: Arlen Sawyer will make delivery arrangements and will assist with the care of the bulls prior to delivery. Inspection of the Bulls: Bulls may be viewed at A&B Cattle, the Arlen and Becky Sawyer ranch headquarters, seven miles south of Bassett, Nebr. on Hwy. 183 at your convenience. Lot Numbers: Lot numbers on the bulls correspond with the numbers in the catalog. Most bulls also carry their herd tags. Performance Information: All printed EPDs in this catalog are the current 2013 EPDs as of Feb. 14, 2013. The top 10% of the bulls have genomic profiles which are incorporated in their updated EPDs available on the website or sale day. Ultrasound data, scrotal measurements and updated EPDs available sale day or prior to the sale on the website. Liabilities: All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk, and the owner and his agents assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. Terms: These cattle sell under the suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which briefly state: Terms of the sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The auctioneer will settle all disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Each animal will be at purchaser's risk as soon as sold. Guarantee: All bulls of breeding age are guaranteed as breeders. If the animal proves a non-breeder, a satisfactory exchange will be made, or credit will be given in the next sale. Nebraska Sandhills Rancher Leads CAB Board in 2012 A full-time, professional cattleman provides the critical connection between the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) brand, its 30,000 producer-members of the American Angus Association and their thousands of customers. Arlen Sawyer, chairman of the Certified Angus Beef board of directors for 2012, fills that bill. With wife Becky, he owns the seedstock Angus ranch A & B Cattle near Bassett, Neb.; daughter Jessica in Billings, Mont., and son Adam in Roswell, N.M., are involved as well. “I’m lucky enough to make a living in the cattle business and live in an area where raising beef cattle is the major industry, where people take so much care and pride in what they raise,” says Sawyer. “I take that appreciation to board members and staff at CAB who may not have that luxury.” The third-generation Angus producer moved to the Bassett area from South Dakota the year after marrying in 1975. “Growing up in a seedstock operation and then living here in the Sandhills for thirty-some-odd years makes us very aware of the nuts and bolts of the core cattle business,” he says. Demand for Angus cattle was not as strong in those early days. “Back in the ’70s and early ’80s there was a movement in the beef industry that we had only to be concerned about putting edible protein forward, and we had to do that in an efficient manner,” Sawyer recalls. Arlen Sawyer Aware of CAB since its inception in 1978, Sawyer credits the brand now with stimulating more demand for Angus cattle over the years since then. “I think there’s a definite role for beef: it is a matter of taste, it is a matter of a quality eating experience. If we can’t provide that, then we have to compete on a price basis with other proteins and that makes it difficult.” He also credits CAB’s carcass specifications and monitoring system for “making sure that quality eating experience is never at risk.” Meanwhile, the market rewards high-quality cattle. That fact plus strong competition bodes well for CAB supplies. Sawyer says Angus breeders are the most competitive there are: “That forces you to produce a better product.” Aside from raising seedstock, Sawyer made it a point to become familiar with all sectors of the production chain. “Several customers have retained ownership, and we have fed out some of our own steers as a means to collect data for feedback.” He notes that documentation of feedlot and packinghouse performance helps everyone when trying to breed for specific traits. Sawyer’s solid production background is a great asset to CAB. “Arlen does a nice job of keeping our focus squarely on the mission that has guided us since 1978,” says company president John Stika. “In an industry that constantly throws new things at us, we just make sure everything we do adds value to registered Angus cattle.” One of the highlights since being appointed chairman in December 2011, Sawyer says, was attending the grand opening of the CAB Education & Culinary center in Wooster, Ohio, in May 2012. “It became evident to me that this is a big step in making sure the chefs and preparers are involved in bringing out the value and the taste of this Angus beef.” Encompassing all the links that make up today’s production chain, CAB shares a common goal with its chairman, who confronts each day with a positive attitude and a simple solution: “The only option is to get better.”

Recorded on 10/31/12 - the on-test weight recorded before the bulls went on feed test on our ranch. A high roughage ration consisting of ground hay and wet distillers by-product was fed to the bulls to insure an adequate gain of about 3.25 lbs. per day while staying in good, athletic condition. Adjusted weaning weights are based on this weight. (2/14 WT.) Actual Wt. Recorded on 2/14/13 - the off-test weight. Adjusted yearling weights are based on this weight. (GAIN) Average Daily Gain - a computation of the average daily gain established by the bulls during the 105 day feed test. (ADJ. HIP) Adjusted Yearling Hip Height - a measure in inches taken at the hip at a given time and can be adjusted to a common age of 365 days. This figure can be translated into a frame score. An adjusted hip height of 48.8 inches = Frame Score 5; 51.0 inches = Frame Score 6; and 53.0 = Frame Score 7. $Values - are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment. ($W)eaning - the expected average difference in future progeny performance based on four primary economic impact areas: birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk, and mature cow size compared to the progeny of other sires. ($F)eedlot - the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning performance compared to progeny of other sires. ($B)eef - the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of feedlot and grid values. (WWR) Dam’s Nursing Ratio - provided on dams as a measure of their calves average weaning weight ratios. Those dams with a tattoo number in their name in the 0000 series were first calf heifers when that bull was born.
