Dear Friends, We would like to welcome you to our first ever Public Auction of our bulls. We have sold them private treaty now for nearly a decade but feel its time for a change to make it more equitable for all of us. 2012 has been quite a dramatic year for the farmer and rancher with record high livestock and grain prices but to also have record high inputs as well. During these times it makes sense to trade off your old bull at the end of the breeding season and trade for a new one with minimal dollar difference. The genetics should be of great benefit to you as well. We are constantly striving to bring you only the top genetics from the most highly respected cow families in the nation. A little about the bulls: The bulls were fed at a new location this year. Oak Springs Ranch southeast of Onaga. They were developed on a high roughage ration and fed Amino gain for muscle development instead of fat. No silage was fed this year. They posted excellent gains this open winter. We feel this crop of bulls are in much better condition than in years past and have a more athletic presence about them. We hope they will have better longevity for the customer. Another thing we’ve done was DNA tested all the spring Angus bull crop with the Pfizer HD50K test for their respective traits and parentage. We feel it will greatly help sort the differences in the full brothers and tell more of a story than we’ve been able to know before. They will have complete profiles available on an update sheet ASAP. See our website for more information as well. ***Changes in the sale format this year*** Due to increased demand in several lots the past few years, we feel that public auction of the bulls is the fairest way to do business for both the buyer and seller. Therefore we will be auctioning the bulls this year in a “Choice of the pen format”. Bulls will be driven in by full brother groups or grouped in likewise categories and you’ll be given the opportunity to buy your choice or take them all. We will have a snappy sale. We have spared no expense in bringing you the finest set of bulls we’ve offered to date. Out of the spring Angus set there’s only 1 that’s not an ET calf. Angus highlights include a set of Final Answer full brothers that would make excellent heifer bulls. They exhibit enough power and growth to breed all your cows too. Two other groups of ET’s by Right Time and Density out of our Everelda Entense donor “1257” are really solid bulls that will keep you in business for the long haul. Ultrasound Measurements Explained
Fat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat. Ribeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable. %Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.5 to 4.0%. Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

Ultrasound Measurements Explained
Fat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat. Ribeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable. %Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.5 to 4.0%. Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $VALUE INDEXES Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. We have sold them private treaty now for nearly a decade but feel its time for a change to make it more equitable for all of us. 2012 has been quite a dramatic year for the farmer and rancher with record high livestock and grain prices but to also have record high inputs as well. During these times it makes sense to trade off your old bull at the end of the breeding season and trade for a new one with minimal dollar difference. The genetics should be of great benefit to you as well. We are constantly striving to bring you only the top genetics from the most highly respected cow families in the nation. A little about the bulls: The bulls were fed at a new location this year. Oak Springs Ranch southeast of Onaga. They were developed on a high roughage ration and fed Amino gain for muscle development instead of fat. No silage was fed this year. They posted excellent gains this open winter. We feel this crop of bulls are in much better condition than in years past and have a more athletic presence about them. We hope they will have better longevity for the customer. Another thing we’ve done was DNA tested all the spring Angus bull crop with the Pfizer HD50K test for their respective traits and parentage. We feel it will greatly help sort the differences in the full brothers and tell more of a story than we’ve been able to know before.
