Welcome Welcome and thank you for your time and interest. We face both challenges and opportunities in the future of the cattle business. Regardless of good times or bad times, studies show that you can maximize your profits with superior genetics. Our goal is to provide our customers with “performance” cattle, backed by data.The averages of our sale bulls this year are: BW 82 #, Adj WW 636# no creep, post weaning gain 4.8#/day, Adj YW 1304, Adj IMF 3.83,ADj BF 0.29,Adj REA 14.7. We will have some moderate low birth weight 5.5 frame score bulls and the big 6.5 frame score “power” bulls. Color and scrotal data will be available on sale day. Every GCCR bull is bred and selected for maternal traits so that you can use them to raise daughters if you desire.The GCCR sale bulls average 25 in their milk EPD while combined Purebred and Hybrid Simmental breed average is 22.5. More data in the form of Genetic Trends is available for you to evaluate on page 4 . Our cow herd is enrolled in the Simmental “Total Herd Enrollment” cow productivity program, so that we can better evaluate our cows and continually work for improvement. GCCR cows have to survive and perform in the real world environment. New this year, is that we are offering 20 head of commercial females in groups of 5.This gives you a chance to use the GCCR genetics to start building for those future opportunities. A very big event in our lives is that we had a new granddaughter in the past year -- Bella Marie born June 11. Some of the most fun we have is when our grandkids, Grant and Olivia, help us “go check cows”. We enjoy seeing all of you who keep coming back and look forward to meeting new people on sale day. We invite all of you to a fun day with our family on Friday, March 15.

Olivia loves the cows and likes to go “check cows” with Grandpa. Eric and Tori are busy with their Optometry practice that has offices in Grant, Ogallala, and Imperial. Eric has been helping with the cattle and wrote the footnotes on the bulls.
Our son Dr. Adam and our grandson Grant who is 14 now. Adam is a Supervisory Public Health Veterinarian working for the USDA out of eastern NE. Visit with him about what he sees in all the packing plants that he inspects. Adam also has a private Chiropractic and Equine medicine veterinary practice. Adam and Grant help with the cattle when they can.

Bulls received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were developed on a Purina program for gain and longevity, not high fat/gain ration. They were developed in a large lot.

Cattle Viewing Bulls will be at the Auction Market on Thursday, March 14, the heifers will come in early Friday, March 15 or come by and visit at home before the sale.

Heifer Development
Wintering/Delivery GCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30th. We will work out a schedule for delivery beginning in April. Please let the clerks at the Sale know the day of the Sale if you are taking the bulls or if you want us to deliver, It works best if you can take the heifers Sale day or soon after. We bring the bulls and heifers home immediately after the Sale so that we are taking care of them. The bulls are moved to a large lot and fed a ration to harden them for breeding but keep them in good condition.
Final Data: Actual weights will be taken shortly before the sale and a breeding soundness exam and fertility test will be done by Dr. Lex Thompson. Genetic testing and color testing will be done in February so that it will be ready by the 1st of March.
Volume discount is based on gross sale purchases. When your purchases total $12,000 and you have bought 2 or more head we will give you a 5% discount on your total.

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purpose of EPD calculation. In order to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so this summer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base. The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the new average. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD.The base number will just be different for each trait. It will actually make it easier to compare animals across breeds. health statement It is our desire that bulls and females purchased from GENGENBACH CATTLE will have a long and productive life. With that goal in mind we have implemented the following protocol: All sale animals are ear notch tested for BVD and to this date no positive animals have been detected. All breeding females receive a pre breeding vaccination with a modified live BVD vaccine to help prevent BVD persistently infected calves. At preg check cows are given killed vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR, Vibrio and Lepto. Calves receive vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR, Pasteurella and Clostridium in the spring and at pre weaning and weaning. Cattle are dewormed in the fall with Dectomax injectable and treated for lice and grubs at that time also. Sale bulls and heifers will be poured with Dectomax prior to sale. Disposition Quiet cattle with good disposition are a No. 1 requirement around here. Notice that the bloodlines we bring in are high in docility. Then we cull strictly and eliminate any animal at any stage if they are nervous or difficult to handle. Calves are socialized from an early age and handled in a quiet and easy manner. And don’t let anybody tell you that a cow has to be aggressive to be a good mother, most of our cows are gentle but will also be very protective of a newborn. Now studies have come out citing increased pregnancy rates with docile cattle. We have been seeing the studies showing that quiet, calm cattle gain better and more efficiently in the feedlots. Thus there is an economic payoff to docility along with the pleasure and increased safety of working with easy cattle.

SCHURRTOP 2063 J751 We have purchased the top selling or 2nd high selling bull at Schurrs spring sale for the last 5 years. It is hard to change when something is working so well. The Schurrs have been in the Angus business since Angus were made. Schurr cattle have competed in real world feedlot/carcass contests in several states and always seem to place 1st or 2nd. Our experience has been that the Schurr bulls calve easily. Their calves grow and excel in the feedlot. The females have been working for us as well being easy to work with and having ample milk.

With feed costs high, in today’s cattle feeding environment, you need an animal that will perform efficiently and hang a carcass that will generate premiums above “average” cattle. We have been feeding Gengenbach Cattle Co calves for the last six years and they have proven that they can do both. The gains are well above the yard average and the conversions are as well. We have been marketing these cattle through the US Premium Beef grid in the spring and early summer. This grid works well for cattle that grade choice and dress above the plant average as do the Gengenbach cattle. The disposition of the cattle is excellent which makes everyones’ job easier. QUICK GUIDE to ASA EPDs and $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
