Dear Cattle Producer, Welcome to our March 1st Bull Sale! It seems like just yesterday that we finished with our 2012 sale. We are excited to be offering 120 bulls this year. The selection of bulls ranges from purebred Simmentals to Angus bulls with black or red bulls in each group. I guess the world didn’t end in December and we didn’t fall off the fiscal cliff, so we will keep on improving and growing our cattle. The bulls are also doing very well in this climate change weather. The most important traits we work with are maternal calving ease, wean weight, and carcass. The actual data we are receiving on our feedlot calves is extremely valuable to our program. Since we feed and buy calves from our bulls and we see the value of our breeding program. This year we bought about 350 calves and have 350 of our own on feed. As the price of calves and feed is expensive, the end value of these calves is critical to making a profit feeding cattle. We put the carcass data for each herd sire in the comments and this is actual data from 2011 born calves. The following is a table of what each herd sire is doing and it shows us where we need to improve. The list is sorted by percent choice, then by yield grade. It is plain to see the choice cattle are usually more Angus influenced but please note what happens to yield grade on the calves at the bottom of the list. The last three bulls are our high growth, purebred bulls and they have outstanding yield grade numbers. As we evaluate these bulls it is interesting to see progress in our own breeding program. Our youngest herdsire of the group is right were we want him. Hills 44 Mag’s calves are 79% choice and 57% 1s and 2s. He also had three calves go CAB and this is from a purebred Simmental. One trait we have been working to improve is the tenderness gene represented by the shear force (SHR) EPD. Our herd sires are almost all above average for this EPD (you want a lower number.) I would also like to bring up maternal calving ease again. This is one trait where our cattle truly excel. While looking at our list of bulls for the sale, only two purebred bulls were below average and most are in the top 20% in the breed. While this is so important to look at when buying heifers, it also shows that this is a big part of our program and is bred into our cattle. If you are retaining heifers, this trait will improve your whole program by focusing on animals that are easy calving but not necessarily lighter in weight at calving or at weaning. We are feeding the bulls chopped hay and 8-10 lbs of a wheat-mid pellet from CHS. Some of the commercial bulls had to catch up from weaning but all of the bulls are doing well on this ration. It was a tougher year than 2012 but we are happy with how the bulls have developed. If you can’t make it to the sale, feel free to stop in to look at the bulls. We are very happy with his ultrasound data being so uniform. It will be interesting to see how this young herd sire develops and if he will live up to his outstanding EPDs. EPD TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS

Breed averages can be used as a benchmark to determine where an animal ranks within the breed as well as whether or not an animal’s offspring will be suitable for a given set of environmental conditions.

Calving Ease (CE): The average difference of unassisted births when used on heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pounds of birth weight. Used primarily as an indicator of calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pound at weaning. Does not account for variance in WW that are due to milk. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s progeny. Expressed in pounds at one year of age. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): The average ease of a bull’s first-calving daughters compared to daughters of a different sire. Milk (MILK): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned and reflect the avg. difference due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned. Account for avg. differences from both WW direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.

CARCASS EPDs

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimate average differences in carcass weight at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade (YG): In an effort to apply the same scale the industry uses in quantifying meat yield Percent Retail Cuts EPD is now expressed as an YG EPD. As with all EPDs, YG EPD is expressed as a deviation. Unlike its predecessor, however, negative values are desirable. To use it, keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are a 1/3 of a yield grade better (lower) than a 0.0 YG EPD bull. If bulls with a zero EPD for Yield Grade sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower). Marbling (MARB): The average difference in USDA Quality Grade in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. A numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. Ribeye Area (RIB): The average difference in ribeye area in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth in compared to another. Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids - our system (ASA system) was not developed to make valid comparisons among these goups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population. IMF
