apply for the sixth annual Beef Leaders Institute (BLI). Held June 17 to 20, the program brings 20 Angus producers together in Saint Joseph, Mo., for a series of informative sessions. “We are thrilled to offer this experience to our younger Association members each year,” says Shelia Stannard, director of activities and events. “It’s a fun way for participants to learn about all segments of the beef business, while meeting fellow breeders from across the country.” Funded through the Angus Foundation, BLI is designed for Association members 25 to 45 years old to provide insight into the beef industry, while enhancing their knowledge of the Association and strengthening leadership skillsDuring the three-day event, BLI
participants are able to tour a beef harvesting and packing facility, retailer, fabricator, feedlots and other industry segments, including the Association. The Association provides transportation, lodging, meals and materials during BLI. Attendees will be responsible for round-trip transportation between their home and either Kansas City or Saint Joseph, Mo. The KAA sends weekly news and information via our Kansas Angus E-Update; you can join our e-list by sending an email to ksangus-eupdate-subscribe@wbsnet.org. This KAA has published the Kansas Angus News (KAN) for over 60 years; our full color magazine style newsletter averages 24 pages per issue and is published seven times a year. The KAN features sale advertisements, industry information, show result photos, entry forms and more as well a page in each issue for junior members. Subscriptions to the KAN are free or you can read it online at www.kansasangus.org. The annual Kansas Angus Directory is a great reference material. The 132 page booklet features a complete listing of current KAA members along with contact and herd information. Advertisements from many Kansas Angus breeders and industry partners highlight the states programs, seedstock and genetics. Three Commercial Angus & Angus-Influence Female Sales Planned for Spring In Fort Scott Junction City and Holton
The Kansas Angus Association (KAA) is excited to announce that a new sale will be added to the existing sales sponsored for commercial Angus and Angus-influenced females . The new sale will be held in Holton. sale will again this year be held at JC Livestock Sales, Junction City and in Fort Scott). The KAA currently seeking consignments of commercial Angus and Angusinfluenced young age cows, pairs, bred heifers, and open heifers for both spring sales. Females must be consigned in minimum five head lots, with all females being seven years of age or younger. To qualify for these special sales, the females must meet Certified Angus Beef ® live specifications: be predominately black hided; black white faces and /or “baldies” will be accepted; have typical beef-type conformation (no visible dairy influence); and be without long floppy ear and hump (no visible Brahman influence). The sales welcome bred cows and heifers; fall pairs, and open heifers. Angus seedstock producers are encouraged to help inform their commercial bull customers of this sale as an option for producers to market source verified Angus replacement females. Hello fellow Angus enthusiasts. I'm sure during the next year you will come to realize that I am not at all qualified to lead this fine organization. I ask that you bear with me and perhaps we can learn something together. We all gain from exchanging ideas both new and old. Our successes have come from tried and true methods from the past and incorporating new and different visions for the future. To quickly introduce myself, I don't come from a traditional multi generation family. My family has always been involved with stocker and feedlot cattle, which might explain why I may have different views and appreciation for Angus cattle in all aspects of our beef industry. We certainly live in a different world than just a few years ago. If I hear about fiscal cliffs, gun control regulations, and Obamacare one more time I think I'll get sick. As Angus breeders we have something to hold on to that has stood the test of time and holds great hope for the future. What a heritage from the past, which we can pass on to future generations. As many of us are calving its a particularly good time to appreciate the fact that we have Angus calves being born to good Angus cows. What a blessing. Remember, not all of our friends and neighbors have that luxury. Some very good cattlemen still haven't figured out that they don't need to dread calving season if they would only switch to good Kansas Angus bulls. Keep spreading the message. The drought seems to have a strangle hold on our business from high feed prices to parched rangeland and empty stock ponds, Rest assured it will get wet again someday and when it does the need for good Angus genetics will be in demand like never before. As people on the national tour witnessed this past Fall Kansas is well positioned to help fill those needs. Lets all remember to pray for moisture not only for us but our neighbors as well.

Notes & News from Anne Thank You and Welcome In January, during our annual meeting we said farewell to some of our state leadership and welcomed new members to the KAA board. We thank Tim Benton for serving as our 2012 president and look forward to his continued leadership and he finishes his tenure on the board of directors as past president. We welcome Craig Rucker as the 2013 president and anticipate his sense of humor and practical experience as he leads the KAA this year. Ron Hinrichsen joins the executive officers as vice president. Shane Prill and Rusty Williams completed terms on the board; their commitment to our organization is appreciated. Elected to serve on the board as directors for three year terms were John McCurry, district 6; Grant Gardiner, district 8 and Clint Woodrow, purebred at large. The Kansas Angus Auxiliary also inducted new officers in January. Karen Santee, Langdon will serve as president following the outstanding dedication of president Varee McCabe. The KAA leadership is ready to lead and is enthusiastic about our breed, industry and association. See the complete list of officers & directors on the right side if this page.

KLA Members Elect Rancher, Cattle Feeder As Officers A Marion County rancher and a Gray County cattle feeder have been elected by members of the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) to serve as officers of the organization over the next year. Mark Harms, a seedstock producer from Lincolnville, became KLA president during the group’s annual meeting November 30 in Wichita. The new president elect of the 5,500-member organization is Ingalls cattle feeder Jeff Sternberger. Harms and his wife, Kim, own and operate Harms Plainview Ranch. They raise registered Angus, Red Angus and Charolais cattle. The ranch utilizes leased grass in Marion and surrounding counties. Dryland farm acreage is used primarily for feed production. Harms and Sternberger Harms Plainview Ranch has grown to involve four cooperator herds in Kansas to help supply the business with breeding stock. The Nebraska native’s leadership resume is lengthy. Harms has served as chairman of both the KLA Purebred and Stockgrowers Councils, chaired the KLA Policy & Resolutions Committee for three terms, spent several years on the KLA Executive Committee and represented Marion County on the KLA Board of Directors. He is a member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Policy Division Board of Directors. He previously served on the NCBA Federation Division Board of Directors and is a past member of the industry’s Joint Advertising Committee. Harms is a founding member of U.S. Premium Beef (USPB). He was chairman of the USPB Board of Directors Nominating Committee for the first six years the company was in business. Harms Plainview Ranch is a qualified seedstock supplier for USPB. The Harmses belong to the Kansas Angus Association (KAA), Kansas Charolais Association and the Kansas Red Angus Association. Harms is a past KAA director. Locally, Harms is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He has served on the church’s board of education and as vice chairman of the congregation. He is a past director of Marion County Farm Bureau. Harms graduated with honors from Kansas State University in 1990. His degree is in animal sciences and industry. The Harmses have three children. Daughter Taylor is a freshman at K-State. Sons Cade and Payton are in eighth and seventh grade, respectively. Sternberger is the president and manager of Midwest Feeders at Ingalls. He is part of a group that bought the feedyard in 1992. Since then, Midwest Feeders has added ownership interests in CRI Feeders at Guymon, OK; Brookover Cattle Company LLC of Scott City; and Waurika Farms LLC, with ranching operations in Oklahoma and South Dakota. Independent from his part in Midwest Feeders, Sternberger and his wife, Colleen, own a wheat and stocker cattle operation in Oklahoma and a cow-calf/ stocker business in Mississippi KLA is a trade organization representing the state’s livestock business on legislative, regulatory and industry issues at both the state and federal levels. The association’s work is funded through voluntary dues dollars paid by its members.

Kansas Angus Auxiliary As I prepare to write this article for the KAN I find myself reflecting on the years since 1996 when my husband, Barry and I made the decision to become Angus breeders. Like so many other people who love the country life, we find ourselves working OFF the farm so we may live ON the farm. We call our humble abode “Silver Lake Angus”. Our daughters, Megin and Kyleigh were raised as members of the KJAA and NJAA. It was here they developed their skills and became passionate about the Angus breed. Both girls were state and national auxiliary scholarship recipients and because of the support of the Auxiliaries they were able to continue their college educations. The year 2013 finds me serving the Kansas Auxiliary as President. I see this as my opportunity to pay forward the support and leadership to others that has been given to my family and I. The Auxiliary meets twice a year, in January at the Futurity and then in June during the Kansas Preview Show. I would like to invite all women to take a break from the show barn, the farm/ranch and meet other women who share the same interest in Angus. This is going to be a great year supporting our Kansas Juniors on the local and national levels. Thank you Chelsea Figge, Miss Kansas Angus 2012, for doing a great job of representing the Auxiliary at sales and other Angus events this past year. Speaking of royalty…congratulations to Esther McCabe, Miss American Angus! We are excited to see what the future holds for you and we will be here supporting you.

Applicants must first qualify on the state level prior to entering the national competition with one male and one female applicant from each state eligible for national competition. Minutes The Kansas Angus Auxiliary Meeting was called to order by President Varee McCabe on June 1, 2012, 4:30 pm; KJAA preview Show, Hutchinson, Ks. Mrs. McCabe also read correspondence. Each member in attendance introduced themselves. The President asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting that were printed in the Kansas Angus News. A correction was noted in the January 2012 minutes: Gardiner Angus Ranch has donated the 2012 American Angus Auxiliary Endowment Heifer that will sell in June during the All American Breeders Futurity in Louisville. Lori Fink presented the Treasurer's report to the Auxiliary; she also reminded members to pay their dues. Karen Santee filled in for the Reporter's Report and asked that anyone who will attend the Auxiliary Breakfast in Louisville, KY to bring back any mementos for the scrapbook. Chelsey Figge shared her Miss Kansas Angus scrapbook as of now. Ways and Means Committee Report: Mary McCurry reported that there were still platters for sale at $30 each. Mary will serve as the Ks chairman for the American Angus Aux breakfast in Louisville. Discussion was held on decorations and favors. Lori noted that we could spend $15 to $20 each on favors. Discussion included a bracelet for women guests and lesser priced Ks product for men; we will need about 200 favors. KS Angus members and breeders will be asked to help sponsor the breakfast favors and decorations, Mary will work on an invitation to sponsor. Lynne Hinrichsen presented the Scholarship report. For the American Angus Auxiliary Lynne Hinrichsen reported that her term for the Region Three Director will be over in the coming year. Old Business: Anne Lampe reported on the Auxiliary Breakfast in Louisville, KY during November 2012. The Nomination Committee presented the 2013-2014 Kansas Angus Auxiliary Officer Slate. The Officer Slate consists of: President Karen Santee, Vice President Jackie Ottensmeier, Secretary Megin O’Brien, Treasure Lori Fink, and Reporter/Historian Beverly Figge. The Officer Slate was approved by a unanimous ballot.. Melissa Cozzitorto was appointed as a scholarship committee member by Varee McCabe. A hospitality chair is needed to fill the vacancy. There was a motion to adjourn the meeting, it was seconded and carried. (approval pending on Jan 26, 2013) Submitted by Jackie Ottensmeier.
Angus Scholarships
The Angus Foundation offers general scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in higher education. Eligible Angus youth meeting the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2013 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the 2013 NJAS in Kansas City, Mo. Applications will be available online beginning Dec. 1, 2012.
