Greetings This past year certainly elapsed in a hurry; it was a 2 edge sword around here. This year was on the dry side, but we did manage to get enough hay put together. Cattle and grain prices are in our favor, no doubt we need it though with input costs as they are. Never in my life time have the cattle future looked better. The cattle inventory worldwide is very low. I believe that anyone that has the desire to produce food for the world is in an excellent position to reap great rewards for their efforts. As I looked through the market reports I have noticed that a very large amount of the calves that were sold have sold for very good prices, but I also noticed that a lot of producers are selling lighter calves than they should and could be. Some may blame the drought, but I have witnessed a lot of small straight bred cattle that just need a shot of cross breeding. There is no doubt that by cross breeding you could add extra pay weight and dollars with no extra work or feed. I have been in the seedstock business for over 37 years and I have never seen more opportunity than now. Yet it is not easy to make ends meet. I strongly encourage you to take a look at using SimAngus genetics in your program. These cattle are in strong demand, they are easy to manage, they calve easy. They grow fast and weigh heavy at sale time. The replacement quality is excellent, these cattle work hard raise big calves and get pregnant with less opens then straight Angus cattle (I have years of data to prove it). The costs of feed is high and cross bred SimAngus cattle lead the way in feed efficiency, and feed conversion rates. The packers love them because they grade very well yet they maintain yield grade 2 & 3 carcasses, and hardly ever produce yield grade 4 cattle that get over fat and receive big discounts. They just do things right and produce a healthy excellent eating experience for our consumer. Don’t let the breed ads that you read tell you that cross breeding doesn’t pay that is false, and it will cost you pay weight, efficiency and dollars and cents. I call it false marketing with little proof of science. Our ranch runs our cattle out on the range and keeps them grazing for as long as we can. We calve cows twice a year starting in late January and then late August. We believe that by offering you older bulls to turn out, you will Service more cows and they will stay in excellent shape. Calving season is time consuming in the winter and spring. This past calving season went very well, very

little calving problems beside a few tangled up twins and 2 backward calves. The heifers rarely need help they just lay down and calve. It is about unheard of anymore to get a cow in the chute to get calves started. We put strong emphasis on good mothering ability and good uddered cows. If a cow’s udder becomes a problem she is culled, you and I don’t need extra chores. This fall we calved 160 cows and heifers out. We never seen a calf born, never had to bring a cow in. We only checked cows once a day to tag and weigh calves. Every cow has a calf and there are 4 extras in the barn, there were 38 2yr old heifers and every one calved on their own and they all have calves on them. There is a lot of talk and opinions on what is the best breed or breeds to use, there is no other breed that has spent more time, money, and energy to collect data at birth, weaning and in the feedlot and packing plants than the American Simmental Association has (not even Angus). The American Simmental Association has more data collected on heifer calving ease than any other breed. Not only on Simmental bulls but Angus and Red Angus alike. No other breed has spent or are currently collecting unbiased data that is collected by University calving teams. For the past several years the ASA have AI’d more cattle for research and unbiased data. These cattle are mass bred to heifers and cows alike, calved out by calving teams that the Montana State University directs. They’re comparing and collecting data on some of the Nation’s top Angus, Red Angus, and Simmental sires. The American Simmental Association lines up the cows and the bulls to be tested. Anyone can nominate a bull and most of the AI studs and seedstock producers are using this opportunity to collect solid unbiased data that will enhance the value of the cattle industry. If you have never used Sim-Angus in your program or haven’t used them in the past 5 years, come take a look, you will like what you see. RANCH LOCATION: The sale will be held at the ranch located south of Wibaux, Montana, go 4 1/2 miles south of the Wibaux County Fair Grounds on Highway #7, then turn left on Black Diamond Road (east) go 1 1/2 miles, then turn right (south) on Custer Trial Road, go 2 3/4 miles, sale location is on the left hand side of the road. As recommended by the American Angus and American Simmental Associations. Cattle will only be released from the sale after they have been settled for. In no instance, will any cattle be allowed to be loaded for shipping without full settlement. EPD’s listed in catalog are new Spring 2013 numbers, please note that EPD’s may change from time sale catalog is printed, until registration papers are transferred.

ULTRASOUND Please Note: The spring born bulls will be ultrasounded and data will be available sale day, or as soon as available.

Feeding arrangements and delivery For bulls selling for $2,000 or more, we will offer free keep of your bull until the first of April. At that time we will semen test and give your bulls a breeding exam and deliver them free of charge up to 500 miles. For bulls that sell for less than $2,000 we will feed them and have them semen tested for $150 due on sale day. We will help in delivery arrangements. The bulls will be delivered to your ranch or in some cases when there are multiple owners of cattle on the truck and there is a need to unload and sort cattle, we may ask that you meet us at a central location that is convenient to both parties. For cattle selling over 500 miles away, we may have to hire a trucking firm to help with delivery, if so, we will guarantee delivery cost not to exceed $300 per bull. In most cases, we will deliver them ourselves, but occasionally we will put the bull on a commercial truck that is reputable and conscientious. For purchases of cattle a long distance away, we ask that you be flexible on delivery dates in case we have the opportunity to send your bull your direction earlier than April 1st. When purchasing a bull from Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we take responsibility in delivering a healthy, breeding bull. We will take responsibility of injury or death loss while the bull is on our ranch. Responsibility of your bull purchase begins when he reaches your ranch or delivery point. We guarantee buyer satisfaction. If you have any problems with your bulls ability to breed and settle cows, let us know so we can make it right. We suggest that you insure your bull against death or injury. We cannot guarantee them against an act of God or sickness that develops while he is in your control. We do guarantee our cattle to be healthy sale day.

HEALTH AND VACCINATIONS: The Bulls were vaccinated at branding with Pyramid 4, with Presponse and Vision 7 with Somnus, and again at weaning, they were poured with Ivermectin on September 3 and again in December. They were tested free of BVD and to be best of our knowledge are free from all genetic defects.

This bull offers the best. He is very stout and well made. A moderate framed powerhouse, very hard to pick apart. Good enough to be used in a seed stock program. If cattle that are very smooth and 3 dimensional are what you like, here is a true outcross to look at. Very deep bodied, thick made, strong topped, big butted and very docile. I feel he is one of the best to sell anywhere.

This Clicker son is very long with eye appeal. He hit a home run with a 836 205 weight for a 111 ratio. If you are looking for a bull that has a high producing dam that is bred to be maternal and loaded with a carcass valued pedigree, here he is. There is a lot of production wrapped around his dam as she weaned 3 calves for an average weight of 746 and a ratio of 108. It takes a solid cow to raise a top bull and this cow qualities.

This bull is out of a very solid cow line. His dam has produced 5 calves for an average birth weight of 88 pounds to ratio 101 and her weaning ratio is 107 on the 5 calves. This guy weaned at 813 to ratio 108. His coming 2 year old sister is our favorite bred heifer. Use him to add length and maybe a little more frame. He should definitely sire cow power and excellent uddered females.

A real brute, I don't think you could pack more power and volume in a bull. This bull has a full brother walking in the pastures of Cobb Brothers in Washington. He was a lead off sale topper 2 years ago. He is a twin to 3Z, Lot 19. He also made this top pen of Sims-Angus bulls. When it comes to his Sire BDV Festus 149S, there has never been another Sims-Angus bull that we have ever used that consistently matches the power and easy keeping ways that he does. 149S topped our sale in 2007. We used him AI and liked what we got, so we bought him back and used him as a top herd sire. His dam, likewise, writes her own story as one of our finest. Here is a Clicker calf out of a moderate sided cow that is very maternal, she has produced a couple of sale toppers in past sales, one went to Jager Farms in Nebraska. What a bull! I don't know if you could breed a bull with more thickness and depth than this guy. He has what it takes to be top class. Very deep, wide and loaded with volume. This bull is very stout. He is deep, big volumed and loaded with muscle. His dam has one of our best fall heifer calves on her now. This guy will sire more power then he shows on paper. He was not totally weaned off early but we found out that he got in with another set of cows, leaving his dam to about dry up before we discovered the problem. So from then on I don't think she milked well but this year she is proving to be one of the top producers.

Here is a bull out of a high capacity cow that seems to always maintain her condition. She has a real good udder and seems to always raise a top notch calf. Where do we go from here. The Simmental breed has stepped up to the challenge the past few years and has jumped through many of the hoops that at one time were stumbling blocks and pit falls for the breed. It wasnít very long ago that the word Simmental was associated with hard calving, hard keeping, rat tailed elephants of unpredictable colors, cattle that get sick in the feedlots With the help and focus of aggressive cattle breeders that had a vision along with our ASA staff. We changed many of those perceptions and realities. Today the Simmental breed has positioned itself to be the number one choice of the continental breeds. Why the change of attitude among commercial cattlemen, feeders and packers? The reason is, we have changed. The breed has changed and today we have cattle that are very prediciatable in calving ease, color, polled traits and still we maintained excellent growth and improved our overall mature size and increased the efficiency and profit ability of the Simmental breed, but at the same time I am concerned some breeders are forgetting the past and are putting more birth weight and mature size and frame back into their genetics. I don’t want to go back there again and I don’t feel that you do either. Today the buzz word is CARCASS. How do we fit into the beef industries picture? Very well as a whole, but we need to keep improving our cattle in each and every generation. Today our industry has very little margin for error. We as producers of food have very tight margins for profit and still the perception of the vast majority of the world’s population is food is to high priced, they donít understand or care what it takes. All they want is to be fed economically. So how do we improve and keep up with technology and the fast paced demands that the world presents and still stay profitable? It seems like it was just yesterday that ultrasound came into the picture, some felt it was gospel, some feel it is not very accurate and some don’t care. Some feel that we lost our efficiency in our cow herds due to high selection of carcass traits. Some claim they have all the answers, sometimes I wonder if anyone knows. Now along comes genomic testing, the test where a little blood, hair, or DNA can tell us ancestry, color, horned or polled, genetic defects, and now they claim they can separate the good and bad for carcass quality, feed efficiency, disposition, and so much more. Back in 1974 I was a senior in high school, I was active in 4-H and FFA, and I knew that cows and Ag was what I wanted to do. I didn’t have any idea or clue that 35 years later the world would be revolving at the fast pace that it is today. Heck, we didn’t even have computers or cell phones. Do I enjoy my choice of life? Yes I do. Am I over whelmed at what it cost to do business? At times. Will I use the technology available to build a better product? I will. But, how do we and our customers analyze all the data that is available today? How do we leave enough money in the bank to pay our bills? All good questions, all hard to answer. What I do know is we still need to produce a product that will support our families and the people in Ag. QUICK GUIDE TO ASA EPDs AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST IN BULLS: You will notice that we are selling 3/4 interest and full possession in all bulls in this offering. This means we are retaining a 1/4 revenue sharing semen interest in all the bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Begger’s Diamond V Ranch to 1/4 of the revenues of any semen sold. It means the bull is in your control and possession unless otherwise stated or for a mutually agreed upon handling of the bull for promotional purposes. You get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch retained semen interest remains even if the bull, or any interest in the bull, is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest if the bull is ever sold. Any semen you choose to collect as an ‘insurance policy’ on your bull for your own in herd use, is 100% yours. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased. Unless a mutual agreement is reached for these expenses prior to promotion and semen collection,. Cost incurred in collecting semen for Begger’s Diamond V Ranch within herd use will be the responsibility of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch. Any semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the new owner of the possession interest in the bull. If you the buyer decides that you would like to own 100% of the semen rights, simply add 25% of the bulls purchase price to your settlement. This will entitle you to 100% of the bull’s future semen sales. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will still retain the right to collect 200 units of semen for within herd use at our expense.

Testicle Measurements: The scrotal circumference of each bull was tape-measured on December 15, 2012. The scrotal measurements were adjusted to yearling, and sometimes will vary one way or another as actual yearlings. Suggested Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls: We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better, over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls. Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season. Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.
