he more the years go by, the faster they seem to pass. I always thought this was an odd statement that my Grandparents used to say. But it is true‌I don’t know where the time goes, and when you receive this January/February 2013 issue of the Nebraska Angus News, we will be entering 2013. Our 2012 Annual Meeting and banquet are complete and it was probably one of my most enjoyable banquets that we’ve had in some time. That’s not to say that others were bad, but what I am trying to say is that the 2012 banquet was just a lot of fun. Great celebration, profitable auctions for the directory pages and the Juniors semen auction, and wonderful awards. Thanks to all of the bidders & buyers in the auctions Arlen Sawyer was recognized as our 2012 Producer of the Year. His family pulled off the great surprise recognition for him as his children slipped in to the banquet without Arlen’s knowledge. Becky was in on the surprise and it was a wonderful celebration. We also presented two Pioneer Producers; Fred & Theresa Kraye of Kraye Angus of Mullen and Tim and Judy Stiefel from Four Winds Farms of Denton were presented with this recognition for 2012. You can read Arlen’s story on page 16. At the Annual Meeting we had new members elected to leadership roles. Randy Pettera from McCook moved into the Past President’s role, Clayton Glause of Fremont was elected President and Dru Uden from Franklin was elected Vice President. Newly elected directors include Dave Nichols of Chambers who will serve the North District, Brandon Meyer of Blue Hill was elected as South Director and Kory Ostrand was reelected for a second term in the

Central District. My sincere thanks to Randy Pettera (outgoing President and Les Hall (outgoing North Director) for their input to this organization over the last few years. You can read more about our educational afternoon sessions that featured American Angus Ass’n COO Bill Bowman and Jena Thompson, Ass’t Director of Public Relations for the American Angus Ass’n; in the NAA President Clayton Glause’s message on pages 8 & 9. Both Bill and Jena presented useful information to our membership regarding new programs such as Maternal Plus and GeneMax and marketing techniques for our members. Jena also rescued the slide show I had prepared on our yearlong events. It was Divine Guidance who prompted the arrangement of Jena being on our afternoon schedule that day. The slide show in itself was a great experience for me. I learned to use some new software programs that came on our association computer. More importantly I learned something about our Association which I had not realized until I worked on the slide show. One of the greatest strengths that our organization has is the friendship that our members have and the fact we all are “Angus Familyâ€?. We work together towards a common goal of raising the best beef animals in the world‌beef that will provide our consumers with a consistent, flavor filled eating experience. My goal is to have the slide show posted on our Facebook page, You Tube and linked to our website by the time you read this issue. And with that I will close. I
hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season filled with all the blessings of family, friends, & good health………and excellent food as well! First, it is an honor and privilege to be elected to serve as President of the Nebraska Angus Association. Most recently, I have served two years as Northeast Director, and last year as Vice President. I have been around Angus cattle all of my life as my father (Loy) began raising Registered Angus with my Grandfather in 1951. In the subsequent years, my parents raised a family of 13 children (7 boys & 6 girls) on the modest profits from a roadside vegetable stand and a herd of black Angus cows. Presently, I reside in Fremont with my wife (Amy) and our four children. While I am employed by Cargill-Provimi NA as a Beef Consultant, I also assist with the management of our registered Angus cattle operation at Palmer (Lazy Black Diamond Ranch) with three of my brothers (Kevin, Galen, Brian) and nephew (Morgan). Involvement at the home operation has continued to build my interest
in keeping pace with the Angus breed. Today’s technologies are tomorrow’s advancements. Thanks to all who were able to attend our Annual Meeting & Banquet. Our “Angus Seminar” was headlined by Bill Bowman, COO, American Angus Association and Jena Thompson, American Angus Association Assistant Director of Public Relations. Bill discussed Association updates, the benefits of enrolling in Maternal Plus, and how commercial cattlemen can utilize GeneMaxTM to further enhance their replacement selection process. Jena gave us a broad over-view of social media and discussed “Getting Started in Social Media and Why It Matters”. Thanks to Bill and Jena for contributing to our day’s educational session. Congratulations to Arlen Sawyer and his family for Producer of the Year honors and to Steifel’s and Kraye’s for Pioneer Producer honors. 2012 has certainly dealt us a mixed hand - good cattle prices, but severe drought conditions. However you slice it, cattle producers have been innovative and resourceful in making decisions on how to combat the situation at hand. The current and future state of our economy is also a bit of concern to many and how it may impact our business. Regardless, demand for beef has been strong in overseas markets. With some help from Mother Nature, 2013 could potentially set us up for more record prices in the beef industry …..stay tuned! If you are not already a member of the Nebraska Angus Association, I encourage you to consider joining. Since I’ve last had a chance to correspond with you, we have had several meetings and the annual Certified Angus Beef Conference at the Greenbrier at West Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Once again, the CAB annual conference was an informative and invigorating event. The relationship between the personnel at CAB and the licensees is absolutely amazing. The licensees are an enthusiastic group of people that are proud to market our product. Congratulations to the Nebraskans that were recognized for their achievements in Supply Development at the Certified Angus Beef Conference. Nebraska dominated the awards in this area and are living proof that the highest quality cattle are raised in Nebraska and fed by the best feedlot operators. Kansas, and as would be expected it was a very well-run, successful and educational event as well. It’s always interesting to see how other breeders maximize their environments to raise Angus cattle. Our annual meeting in Louisville was another interesting event with several people running for the American Angus Association board of directors. I must commend several young (at least they seem that way to me) Nebraska breeders that were in attendance at the annual meeting this year, that haven’t participated before. Thanks for being interested in your American Angus Association and the process of choosing its leadership. The policies set forth by the board, ultimately have longterm effects on the way we do business, so please get involved and let your voice be heard. We’ve just returned from the annual meeting of the Nebraska Angus Association. Many, many thanks to Suzy Hebbert and the committee that chooses the “Producer of the Year” award winner. I was truly humbled and surprised to find that my kids, Adam and Jessica, had flown in to see the award presentation. Thank you all for the vote of confidence. his winter has been an exciting one for the Angus Juniors, we hosted a show in Kearney on December 2 and this show will hopefully become an annual event. It was a great success and everyone had a lot of fun. It was great to see so many from across the state, and enjoy some warm weather in December. The show was in conjunction with the Nebraska Angus Association meeting in Kearney and we thank the adult association for their support. They hosted our annual semen auction on Saturday night and it was a great success. Thanks to everyone who donated or bought semen for their support of the juniors. rlen Sawyer and his wife Becky are owners of A&B Cattle located seven miles south of Bassett in the north central Sandhills region of Nebraska. The Angus roots run deep in the Sawyer family. Arlen’s grandfather, Howard Washington Sawyer, purchased his first Angus cattle in 1917 and began raising registered Angus cattle in 1920. Arlen’s father, Richard James Sawyer, carried on the tradition of farming on the family homestead at Howard, South Dakota and raising Angus cattle until his death in 1990. Sawyer’s Angus was recognized as a Centennial Herd in 1980. In 1987 the entire Sawyer family celebrated the farm’s centennial. Arlen is a graduate of South Dakota State University and during his college years he was active in Block and Bridle Club, Rodeo Club, Little International and was a member of the SDSU 1974-1975 Livestock Judging Team coached by Dr. Dan Gee. After college graduation Arlen married Becky, who had grown up on an Angus farm near Cresco, Iowa. In December 1976, they decided to move to Bassett, Neb., where he accepted the position of manager of the 700 head registered cow herd at K Plus Angus Ranch. In 1982, Arlen and Becky purchased a small ranch in Rock County, Neb. In 1984, the Sawyers became associated with Premier Angus and Silver Plume Angus as they initiated the Profitmaker Bull program. A Premier cow herd was maintained by the Sawyers until the fall of 1990. From 1984 to 1990, Arlen and Becky purchased more ranch land in Rock County, Neb., and expanded their own cow herd. In the fall of 1990, Arlen and Becky established “A&B Cattle”
and have conducted 22 annual bull sales since that time. A&B Cattle was recognized as a Historic Angus herd in 1995, on the 75th anniversary of the Sawyer family continuously raising registered Angus cattle. Some of the first females Arlen and Becky purchased were from the original Sawyer Angus Farm herd. Arlen and Becky have two children, Jessica and Adam, who proudly make up the fourth generation of Sawyers in the Angus business. The A&B breeding program puts strong emphasis on calving ease, carcass quality, feed efficiency and feedlot performance. They have a rigorous selection program in the cow herd based upon production records, and try to closely mimic the efficiency of the area’s commercial cow herds on native Sandhills forages. A&B Cattle currently consists of 600 Angus registered and commercial cows. Over the years the Sawyers have taken advantage of many of the programs and services sponsored by the American Angus Association including Angus Source tags, the CAB Value Discovery program, the AIMS soft-

ware management program, AHIR, and Maternal Plus. Their cow herd has been involved in DNA research testing conducted by the National Beef Cattle Consortium and Meat Animal Research Center for the past four years that includes research on identifying gene panels for growth and reproductive traits. Arlen is a member of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, and the Sandhill Cattlemen’s Association. He is a past president of the Nebraska Angus Association and the Area II Region of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association. He has served on the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic board of directors and on the Beef Advisory Council to the Black Hills Stock Show. He and his wife Becky have served as advisors to the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. Arlen proudly represents Nebraska on the American Angus Association board of directors where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Certified Angus Beef. He also serves on the Angus Genetics, Inc. board as well as the Breed Improvement and Industry Relations committees.

Nebraska. They have marketed cattle at the Nebraska Angus Association sales in Grand Island and Kearney, The Southwest Angus Association sales in McCook, The Heart of Nebraska Angus Association sales in Broken Bow, and they hosted the sales for The Sandhills Angus Association at their sale facility in Mullen. In 1991, Fred and Theresa held their own bull sale and it has been an annual event for the last 21 years. Fred has always enjoyed visiting with people in agriculture and he has been a good ambassador for the Angus breed. Fred was the president of the Nebraska Angus Association in 1987 and 1988. In 2001 Fred and Theresa had a complete dispersion of their cow herd, but couldn’t stay out of the cattle business for long and just one year later bought all of Max Hoffmeister’s cows. Although the day to day operations of the ranch have passed on to Fred and Theresa’s son John, his wife Julie and their grandson David, Fred and Theresa are still involved in the Angus business and help with and promote the annual bull sale.
red and Theresa Kraye were both born and raised in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills. Theresa was born on a ranch north of Mullen, while Fred started his life on the family ranch, south and west of Mullen. In 1953, in an effort to keep his cows separate from his dad’s Herefords, Fred bought his first Angus cows. Fred joined the American Angus Association in the 1950’s. Fred and Theresa were married in 1956 and they raised their family and made their living on the ranch with the cattle. Fred’s parents were still alive and the actual owners of the ranch. Fred has two sisters and the inheritance of the ranch was in question, so in 1967, Fred had a dispersal sale at the ranch of his cows and he and Theresa moved their family to town and bought a place of business. They and their children Frederick, Carol, John and Mike, operated Kraye Feed and Supply and had a diverse business that ranged from selling feed, building construction, doing repair work, selling New Holland equipment Tim & Judy Stiefel and trucking. name. Judy’s parents, John and Fran Tucker, purchased a farm in 1945. A new cement block building, built for a milking parlor, became home for the family. Fran born and raised a city girl, spent the summer living in this building with four teenagers and a five year old (Judy). Fran claimed the wind blew all summer long from all four directions at the same time. She christened the farm and everything attached to it Four Winds. In 1948, the Tuckers became interested in Angus cattle. They purchased some foundation females which became the beginning of Judy’s 4H projects. Judy had built a small herd of females by the time Tim and Judy were married in 1961. In February of 1964 after Tim served his country in the U.S. Army, they purchased half interest in the Tucker herd. The partnership ended a few years later with a dispersal. At the dispersion Tim and Judy bought the older foundation cows and at the same time, acquired the last of J. Hall Dillon’s cow herd at Long Pine, NE. These two groups of females were the basis of Four Winds Angus. Early success of Four Winds Angus began with the sire Evaboxa Jr. and Dillon’s Dora line of females. They maintained a herd of 75 – 100 registered Angus cows. Tim was president of the Nebraska Angus Association from 1973 – 1974 after years of serving on the board as a director. One of the main accomplishments during this time was getting the first full delegation to the National Angus convention in Chicago. All which was instrumental in securing a seat on the American Angus Association board for the state of Nebraska, a seat that is still held by a Nebraskan today. To promote Angus cattle Tim and Judy joined a number of Angus Associations within the state to exhibit and sell breeding stock. They participated in the Nebraska Angus Futurity, which Continued on page 33 . . ..

They did not know if it was old age or the wisdom that comes with age and experience. The cattle were put on shares with Todd and Kristen Eggerling of Bluestem Valley Farms and in 2007 the Eggerlings purchased the herd. Judy is still active in showing her Percheron draft horses and Tim goes along as the pooper scooper. Tim and Judy have always been good stewards of the land and hope Angus Breeders of tomorrow continue in their footsteps so Angus cattle will always have good grazing and remain the choice of cattlemen. “Amen”
Auxiliary Awards Distinguished Woman of the Year American Angus Auxiliary charter member Bette Votaw recognized in Louisville, Ky.
I
n 2012, the American Angus Auxiliary celebrated 60 years of preparing young women for the future, educating consumers about the beef industry, and supporting junior activities. It’s a legacy built by countless volunteers dedicated to the Angus breed. And it was only appropriate for Auxiliary charter member Bette Votaw, Welfleet, Neb., to be recognized as the 2012 Distinguished Woman of the Year.Votaw was honored Sunday, Nov. 11 during the 60th Annual American Angus Auxiliary Breakfast in Louisville, Ky. As Auxiliary advisor Barbara Ettredge, Pilot Point, Texas, began her speech describing the award recipient, all eyes turned to Bette. While Ettredge transported the audience back in time, sharing Bette’s devotion to the Auxiliary, tears began to flow down Bette and her daughters, Kathy and Kerri Ann’s faces. One can only imagine the memories Bette recalled as she was reminded of the moment that changed her life forever. It was 1952. Bette and her husband, Eli, were stepping through the doors of the Chicago International Livestock Show; strolling past the rich black, beautiful Angus cattle, Bette transformed from city girl to ranch wife. It was then that Bette realized she wanted the Angus way of life for her family. The Chicago International was also where Bette met a small group of energetic women who asked her to join the American Angus Auxiliary. Without hesitation, Bette agreed and became a guiding light with her quiet, steady demeanor and wisdom, which kept the Auxiliary on the right path for decades. Bette served as an Auxiliary officer for three years before resign-
ing due to her mother’s health. Ten years later, in 1993, Bette returned to lead the organization. During her presidency, she, along with Angus enthusiasts from across the country, entertained international visitors during the World Angus Forum in Rapid City, S.D. Since that time, Bette has served as chairman and member of several Auxiliary committees. Our Angus Family: Obituary Eli B. Votaw, Jr (Buss) Eli B. Votaw, Jr (Buss) age 94 years of Wellfleet, Nebraska died on October 30, 2012 at Lincoln. He was born on October 13, 1918 at the ranch his father had homesteaded in 1884. He was the eighth child born to Eli B. Votaw and Clara Grace Swink Votaw of rural Wellfleet, Nebraska. In 1937, The Angus Journal had an article about an eighteen year old Nebraska boy that had traveled to Iowa and purchased “the very best heifer of the auction”. This was the beginning of Eli building his nationally recognized registered Angus herd. Eli was enlisted during WWII in the Horse Cavalry at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Eli was later transferred to 7th Corp Headquarters in Omaha, where he was a Master Sergeant in the Military Police. Following his honorable discharge in 1943, Eli purchased his first piece of ground. On April 10th, 1950 he married Bette Marie Petersen of North Platte, NE. Together they diligently worked to build the historic E Bar V Angus Ranch. In 1975, Eli was elected to the American Angus Board of Directors. While serving his two terms on the Board, he was instrumental in establishing the internationally recognized Certified Angus Beef Program. For 30 years, E Bar V participated in a work study program with the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. Eli was very influential in many young men and women’s personal lives and agriculture careers. In addition to his ranch work, he served on the Community Center School Board, and for more than 20 years Eli served on the ad-
