Birth Weights - Food For Thought The Angus breed has done an excellent job in lowering birth wts. while maintaining good performance. However, I think there is an unjustified bias against Angus bulls with +3. and +4. birth wt. EPDs’ We have never pulled or helped a mature cow calve to our Diesel or Hammer Time bulls. While we don’t recommend you use these bulls on first calf heifers, there is no reason to be afraid to use these bulls on mature cows. They will be the best buys of the sale and will add thickness and pounds to your calf crop and leave you a great set of replacement females. We now have Acrossbreed EPDs. A zero birth wt. EPD Charolais bull would be comparable to a +8.5 birth wt. Angus, and a zero birth wt. EPD Hereford bull would be comparable to a +3.0 birth wt. Angus. So, a +4.0 Angus bull would be the equivalent to a -4.5 Charolais bull and a +1. hereford bull for birth wt. EPD. In other words, the lowest birth wt. Charolais bull you could ever find is comparable to the +4. Angus.
Sire of Lots 40-56
These Fall bulls have not been pushed hard at all. They were not creep-fed. They stayed on native pasture with only 2 lbs. of 20% range cubes per day until the first of October. Since then they have been on a high roughage ration of ground hay, sorghum silage, dried distillers and no more than 20% ground corn. They have been running in a large grass trap for maximum exercise and soundness. The weaning wts. on these Fall bulls always run 100-150 lbs. behind our Spring born bulls - because of the dry winter grass versus lush green grass for the Spring born bulls.
